Arsenal earned their first win under new coach <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-arteta-aims-to-solve-ozil-issue-as-chelsea-clash-looms-270702">Mikel Arteta</a> by comprehensively overpowering a stale Manchester United side 2-0 in the Premier League on Wednesday with goals from Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis.

Club record signing Pepe put Arsenal ahead in the 10th minute of their third game under their former player by lashing into the net after good work down the left flank from Sead Kolasinac.

Pepe later hit the post in a dominant first-half display from Arsenal before defender Sokratis deservedly doubled their lead in the 42nd minute by pouncing on some hesitant defending from the visitors following a corner.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-arsenal-boss-arteta-gives-playmaker-ozil-benefit-of-the-doubt-270933">Arsenal</a> comfortably saw out their advantage to record a first league win in five games which took them up to 10th in the standings on 27 points after 21 games.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side remain fifth on 31 points after missing out on the chance to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea, who drew 1-1 at Brighton &amp; Hove Albion earlier in the day and are five points above United.

"I think it was great. We were great in the first half and showed a maturity in the second," said Arsenal defender David Luiz.

"Mikel Arteta is a great coach, he was a great player. I think he can improve every player. Our season started very bad but things can change."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-manchester-united-up-to-fifth-with-2-0-win-at-burnley-270810">United</a> were searching for a third consecutive win but were out-fought by Arsenal and rarely looked capable of staging a revival, even after Mason Greenwood and Andreas Pereira came on and injected some energy into their attack.

UNITED 'NOT GOOD ENOUGH

"They played with high intensity, aggression and passed the ball way better than us," said United defender Harry Maguire.

"The second goal was disappointing, we are conceding far too many from set plays. We need to do the basics. And to lose the second gave us too much to do in the second half. We huffed and puffed but it wasn't good enough."

Once considered the Premier League's showpiece fixture when the clubs routinely battled for the title but, United and Arsenal now find themselves caught up in a topsy-turvy campaign.

United were without <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/pogba-set-to-return-for-manchester-uniteds-trip-to-arsenal-270927">Paul Pogba</a> after the France international hurt his ankle and also missed the services of midfielder Scott McTominay.

His replacement, Nemanja Matic, was sluggish in his passing and frequently beaten by Arsenal's Lucas Torreira, although Pepe was the home side's chief creator.

The Gunners also looked far more assured in defence than they have all season and were quick to snuff out United's attackers whenever they advanced towards their area.

"We have started again, I think we have a lot of space to improve," added goalscorer Sokratis.

"The second half we didn't play like the first but I think every game we are getting better. The fun is back."

Premier League: Arsenal dominate Manchester United in first win for Arteta

Manchester United could be forced to recruit midfielders during the January transfer window with the injured Paul&nbsp;Pogba&nbsp;and Scott McTominay set for lengthy spells on the sidelines, manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/solskjaer-says-smiles-back-on-manchester-united-faces-ahead-of-derby-266672">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a> said on Wednesday.

Pogba&nbsp;is set to undergo surgery to treat an ankle problem that will rule the Frenchman out of action for around a month, while McTominay is out for longer with knee ligament damage sustained in last week's win over Newcastle United.

Pogba, who has been linked frequently with a potential move away from United, spent over two months sidelined with an injury to his left ankle and has only made eight appearances for his club in all competitions.

"We've had scans, it's nothing major but it's something that has to be sorted and dealt with within a time frame," Solskjaer told a news conference after United's 2-0 defeat at Arsenal, which&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/pogba-set-to-return-for-manchester-uniteds-trip-to-arsenal-270927">Pogba</a>&nbsp;played no part in.

"He's been advised to do it as soon as possible. We've been without him all season, it's a big blow.

"Scott will be out for a few months. He's been magnificent and we just hope that Paul can come back within a month or so... We've been suffering a little bit, especially in midfield and we've got to cope with it."

Solskjaer said the absence of the two influential midfielders would play a part in the club's decision-making process on whether to sign reinforcements this month.

"We've got loads of games and important games. But still, it's got to be right and that's the big point here," the Norwegian manager added.

"If it's available and if it's possible we'll do something, definitely. We're looking at one or two (potential signings)."

Pogba's future at United remains the subject of much transfer speculation, especially since recent comments from his agent Mino Raiola criticising the club.

"Now&nbsp;Pogba's problem is Manchester (United)," <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-ac-milan-offer-ibrahimovic-six-month-deal-reports-263650">Raiola</a> told sources.

"It's a club out of touch with reality, without a sports project. I would no longer take anyone there. They would even ruin (Diego) Maradona, Pele and (Paolo) Maldini. Paul needs a club and a squad, one like Juventus was before."

Manchester United considering January reinforcements with Pogba, McTominay injured

Beaten <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-spurs-draw-2-2-at-norwich-amid-var-controversy-270812">Tottenham Hotspur</a> suffered a double injury blow in the 1-0 defeat at Southampton on Wednesday with Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele both forced off at St Mary's.

While the result was bad, the biggest worry for Tottenham manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-its-a-crime-mourinho-rages-against-festive-fixture-pile-up-270511">Jose Mourinho</a> was the sight of top scorer Kane pulling up with a left hamstring injury deep into the second half after stretching to score a goal that was ruled out for offside.

Kane, scorer of 11 Premier League goals this season, went straight down the tunnel, leaving Tottenham with scant striking options as Son Heung-min was serving the final match of his three-game ban for a red card in the defeat by Chelsea.

He was later seen leaving the stadium using crutches.

Asked about the injuries, Mourinho said: "Tanguy Ndombele, I don't know. I imagine this is (his) 10th injury of the season. They stop him to play. It doesn't give him continuity," he said.

"<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/harry-kane-says-englands-defeat-to-czech-republic-is-a-wakeup-call-255480">Harry Kane</a> plays every minute, he plays all the time. It might be big, it might be small. For sure he will be out.

"It is negative, hamstring is always negative. Is it a tear, is it a small thing, is it a contraction? At this moment I cannot say."

Kane has suffered several lengthy injury lay-offs in the last few seasons. Last season he missed a month after damaging ankle ligaments and then suffered a similar injury in April which kept him out until the Champions League final.

A third defeat in Mourinho's nine Premier League games in charge at Spurs further undermined the resurgence his arrival produced and left Tottenham in sixth spot, six points behind fourth-placed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-improving-saints-stun-chelsea-with-2-0-win-at-stamford-bridge-270505">Chelsea</a> who drew with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-arsenal-slump-to-first-home-defeat-by-brighton-266535">Brighton and Hove Albion</a> earlier.

Mourinho said raiding the transfer market was not the answer though, now that the mid-season window is open.

"Come on, we need time to work. We need what we are not having. We need to focus on what we have," he said. "We are not looking to be the kings of the market. We are going to work.

"We see the bad result today which is the continuity of the last year. For 12 months, it has been very difficult to get results away from home.

"The work is not about buying, it is about working with the players on the pitch. It is something that is very difficult for us because we have no time to do it."

Premier League: Tottenham suffer Kane injury blow

Manchester City manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-pep-guardiola-looking-forward-to-fifth-season-with-manchester-city-269875">Pep Guardiola</a> declared the VAR video review system a "big mess" on Sunday after a weekend which saw a series of controversial decisions from the system.

VAR was introduced in the Premier League for the first time this season and there is no sign of the controversies dying down nor of fans warming to the use of the technology.

"Every weekend is a big mess. In other games, it was a big mess. Hopefully next season, it can do better," said Guardiola after City's 2-0 win over Sheffield United on Sunday.

It was one of several games which saw a goal overruled for the most marginal of offside calls, after VAR's geometrical lines had been used to deliver a time-consuming verdict.

The Yorkshire side looked to have grabbed the lead through Lys Mousett in the 28th minute but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review found the slimmest of margins for offside.

Moments after the incident, both sets of supporters expressed their opposition to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-spurs-draw-2-2-at-norwich-amid-var-controversy-270812">VAR</a> in a loud, united chant, while United fans also adopted the 'It's not football any more' anthem that has become a familiar refrain at various games.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/sheffield-united-end-arsenals-unbeaten-run-with-impressive-home-win-257463">United</a> manager Chris Wilder noted Norwich City forward Teemu Pukki had a similar goal ruled out for a fractional offside decision in their 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Saturday and said there had been "eight or nine" incidents over the weekend.

"There's no conclusivie evidence, blurred lines and angles. There needs to be a more clear way of defining it," he said.

Asked about the City fans joining in with the visitors in expressing strong opposition to VAR, Wilder said he was not surprised.

"Up and down the country, all the people at Norwich, a four-letter word about VAR, these are proper football people," he said.

Asked whether the system needed to be reformed or fully scrapped, Wilder said: "Its not my decision, it has to improve. Yet again, it's the first question, eight or nine goals knocked off.

"Where there's so much debate on every goal, it will be analysed yet again. I just don't think it's been refined enough to make a difference."

He was also upset about <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-citys-title-bid-fades-after-stunning-loss-against-wolves-270681">City</a>'s first goal where referee Chris Kavanagh appeared to obstruct United defenders before Kevin De Bruyne found Sergio Aguero for the opener.

"I've been to see the referee and he has been honest about it. We make mistakes and I believe he made one too," said Wilder.

"We talk about the new rule where if the referee touches the ball then he has to blow up. So surely if he is in the way and hinders us, then he makes a sensible decision.

"If he made the sensible decision then I don't think anyone in the ground would have said anything about it."

Premier League: VAR is a 'big mess', says Guardiola after more controversies

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-improving-saints-stun-chelsea-with-2-0-win-at-stamford-bridge-270505">Chelsea</a> produced a stunning late comeback to beat Arsenal 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday, consigning Mikel Arteta to defeat on his home debut as coach of the north London side.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave the hosts the lead in the 13th minute but Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno's howler handed Jorginho an equaliser on a plate after 83 minutes.

Four minutes later, Tammy Abraham settled a bad-tempered London derby when he turned in the box and drilled through the hapless Leno's legs.

Arsenal, 12th, started with great intensity, forcing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-chelseas-frank-lampard-savours-win-over-old-mentor-jose-mourinho-269624">Frank Lampard</a>'s tired-looking Chelsea back, until Aubameyang broke the deadlock after 13 minutes with an acrobatic header.

Lampard brought on Jorginho after 34 minutes and changed from a 3-4-3 formation to 4-3-3, as he did on Boxing Day against Southampton, and it helped the visitors find a foothold at a fired-up Emirates Stadium.

Fourth-place Chelsea, who lost five of their previous seven league games, had the better of the second half and when Leno blundered they quickly turned the screw to leave Arteta still hunting for his first win, following a draw at Bournemouth.

After <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-aubameyang-goal-earns-artetas-arsenal-draw-at-bournemouth-270498">Aubameyang</a>'s opener, Alexandre Lacazette came close to adding a second but N'Golo Kante made a vital interception in front of goal.

The hosts showed more spark than in recent weeks but could not capitalise and Jorginho's presence helped Chelsea turn the game around after the break.

"I give credit to the boys, credit to Jorginho," said Chelsea striker Abraham. "In the first 30 minutes they dominated the ball... then this man (Jorginho) comes on and it's a whole different ball game. Him coming on lifted us as a team."

Abraham saw one effort blocked and another saved by Leno in the second half, while Arsenal substitute Joe Willock fired narrowly wide.

Arsenal complained when Jorginho, already booked, brought down Lucas Torreira, but referee Craig Pawson did not issue a second yellow card.

Then with the clock ticking down Leno missed his punch as he tried to reach Mason Mount's free kick, allowing Jorginho a simple tap-in at the far post.

Abraham and Willian broke at lightning pace and combined for the English striker to net the second against a shell-shocked Arsenal, his 12th league goal of the campaign.

For the first time since 1959, Arsenal suffered a fourth consecutive home defeat, across all competitions.

"I'm really disappointed with the result and the way we conceded the goals and the timing of it as well," said <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-arteta-aims-to-solve-ozil-issue-as-chelsea-clash-looms-270702">Arteta</a>.

Premier League: I'm really disappointed with the result: Arteta

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-citys-title-bid-fades-after-stunning-loss-against-wolves-270681">Manchester City</a> got back to winning ways on Sunday with Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne on target in the second half as Pep Guardiola's side beat Sheffield United 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium in a Premier League game which saw yet more VAR controversy.

It was another impressive performance from Chris Wilder's promoted side, who were unbeaten away in the league, but in the end third-placed City's sharpness in front of goal was decisive as Guardiola picked up his milestone 100th Premier League win.

His century was achieved in 134 games, a Premier League record that bettered <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-its-a-crime-mourinho-rages-against-festive-fixture-pile-up-270511">Jose Mourinho</a>'s 100 in 142 games.

United began strongly and looked to have grabbed the lead through Lys Mousett in the 28th minute but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review found the slimmest offside margin.

Moments later both sets of supporters expressed their opposition to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-spurs-draw-2-2-at-norwich-amid-var-controversy-270812">VAR system</a> in a loud, united chant.

"Yet again we had another goal disallowed by VAR, that's about eight or nine over the weekend, this is not a situation helping the game with the small margins," said Wilder.

"But I will leave that for everyone else to talk about because I have said too much about it."

Third-placed City, beaten 3-2 by Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday and now still 14 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool, finally went ahead in the 52nd minute through Aguero, who blasted the ball home after being slipped in by De Bruyne.

The United players argued furiously that the ball had struck referee Chris Kavanagh during the build-up and a drop ball should have been called but after a brief review the goal stood.

The images suggested Kavanagh merely obstructed a United player rather than made contact with the ball but Wilder said commonsense should have been used.

"We talk about the new rule where if the referee touches the ball then he has to blow up, so surely if he is in the way and hinders us then he makes a sensible decision," said Wilder, whose side are eighth on 29 points after 20 games.

"If he made the sensible decision then I don't think anyone in the ground would have said anything about it."

City wrapped up the win, which leaves them a point behind second-placed Leicester City who have 42, in the 82nd, when De Bruyne drove home after a swift counter-attack by Riyad Mahrez.

"Today I realised, why Sheffield are in the position they are in the table and didn’t lose one game away," said <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/i-have-to-earn-new-contract-pep-guardiola-269437">Guardiola</a>.

"We had problems (but) in the second half we were much better and in these type of games if the first 'goal' was not offside it would have been very difficult. Fortunately, we could score two goals and win."

Manchester City got back to winning ways on Sunday with Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne on target in the second half as Pep Guardiola's side beat Sheffield United 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium in a Premier League game which saw yet more VAR controversy.

United began strongly and looked to have grabbed the lead through Lys Mousett in the 28th minute but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review found the slimmest offside margin. Moments later both sets of supporters expressed their opposition to the VAR system in a loud, united chant. "Yet again we had another goal disallowed by VAR, that's about eight or nine over the weekend, this is not a situation helping the game with the small margins," said Wilder. "But I will leave that for everyone else to talk about because I have said too much about it." Third-placed City, beaten 3-2 by Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday and now still 14 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool, finally went ahead in the 52nd minute through Aguero, who blasted the ball home after being slipped in by De Bruyne. "If he made the sensible decision then I don't think anyone in the ground would have said anything about it." City wrapped up the win, which leaves them a point behind second-placed Leicester City who have 42, in the 82nd, when De Bruyne drove home after a swift counter-attack by Riyad Mahrez. "Today I realised, why Sheffield are in the position they are in the table and didn’t lose one game away," said Guardiola. "We had problems (but) in the second half we were much better and in these type of games if the first 'goal' was not offside it would have been very difficult. Fortunately, we could score two goals and win."

Premier League: Man City defeats Sheffield United but VAR questioned again

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-citys-title-bid-fades-after-stunning-loss-against-wolves-270681">Wolverhampton Wanderers</a> captain Conor Coady hit out at what he called the Premier League's ridiculous use of VAR after his side were on the receiving end of two controversial decisions in their 1-0 defeat to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-mane-the-main-man-as-liverpool-close-on-champions-league-knockouts-264551">Sadio Mane</a>’s winner late in the first half had initially been disallowed by referee Anthony Taylor for handball by Adam Lallana in the build-up, only for a lengthy VAR intervention to overturn the decision and award the goal.

Wolves were then denied an equaliser two minutes later as Jonny Otto was deemed marginally offside by the video assistant before squaring to Pedro Neto, who fired into the bottom corner.

A seething Coady, who came through the Liverpool academy, called for better communication between the authorities, officials and players as the VAR technology is implemented in England’s top flight.

"We feel massively hard done by. I can't get my head around it. It’s ridiculous,” Coady told Sky Sports.

"For me it (VAR) is not working. Some people are saying it gets the right decision but we're the players on the pitch and it doesn't feel right to me. Anthony Taylor is a great fellow to speak to, but I ask a question and I don't get an answer.”

Coady explained that his side’s main grievance was not from the decision reached over <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpools-hunger-for-titles-like-an-addiction-lallana-269291">Lallana</a>’s control, but because they felt the ball had been handled earlier in the move by Virgil van Dijk, whose long pass to Lallana led to the goal.

"It is horrible for me, it is tough to take,” he said.

"We thought Van Dijk handballed it, but the referee tells me Van Dijk is too far away. He played the pass. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/mourinho-confirms-tottenham-appeal-against-wrong-red-for-son-269877">VAR is affecting the game</a>. No-one has asked us (players) about it.

"It is still confusing, I can't get my head around it, you don't get answers on the pitch."

Wolves were also affected by VAR in their 3-2 come-from-behind win over Manchester City on Friday.

A review awarded City a penalty - ruling that Leander Dendoncker trod on the foot of winger Riyad Mahrez - but Wolves keeper Rui Patricio saved Raheem Sterling's spot kick.

However, VAR spotted an encroachment in the area by Coady who had cleared the loose ball and the penalty had to be retaken. Again, Patricio saved from Sterling but this time the England winger drove home the rebound to put City in front.

"It is so tough to take, it has happened twice to us in the last two games against probably the best two sides in the world," Coady added after Sunday's defeat at Anfield.

"In the second half we controlled the game and nullified <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-relentless-liverpool-have-no-time-for-reflection-270699">Liverpool</a> to hardly anything; but it is so disappointing that we are stood here talking about VAR rather than the game and the way Wolves played."

Premier League: Wolves skipper Coady fumes at 'ridiculous' VAR decisions

A controversial <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-mane-the-main-man-as-liverpool-close-on-champions-league-knockouts-264551">Sadio Mane</a> goal was enough for Premier League leaders Liverpool to secure a nervy 1-0 victory over <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-citys-title-bid-fades-after-stunning-loss-against-wolves-270681">Wolverhampton Wanderers</a> and open up a 13-point cushion over their nearest challengers on Sunday.

Mane, in his 150th game for the club, netted three minutes before the break only for Adam Lallana to be penalised for handball in the build-up. However, a lengthy VAR review deemed the ball hit the midfielder's shoulder and the goal stood.

Victory means Liverpool have become only the third team to go unbeaten in 50 consecutive home games in the English top flight, while they also closed out 2019 unbeaten at Anfield in all competitions for the fifth time in their history.

Liverpool have 55 points from 19 games, while Wolves are seventh in the table five points behind Chelsea in fourth.

Wolves, who had lost 15 of their previous 17 league visits to Anfield, made four changes from the side that stunned Manchester City 3-2 less than 48 hours previously.

They were the better side for large parts of the contest and might have taken something from the game had Joao Moutinho and Romain Saiss not blasted over presentable opportunities late on.

Liverpool, sporting gold <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-end-sensational-year-as-roberto-firminos-extra-time-goal-seals-club-world-cup-269525">World Champions</a> badges on their shirts after their Club World Cup triumph, were rarely at their brilliant best but showed once again that they appear to have the mettle to claim a first domestic league title in 30 years.

The only goal of the game caused a flurry of controversy.

Referee Anthony Taylor had blown for handball as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpools-hunger-for-titles-like-an-addiction-lallana-269291">Lallana</a> brought down Virgil van Dijk’s long ball before Mane swept in a half-volley. A lengthy VAR stoppage ensued before the decision was overturned much to the fury of the Wolves players and bench.

The visitors were then left seething when denied an immediate riposte after Pedro Neto’s effort was disallowed – again following a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/var-system-has-made-four-errors-in-premier-league-referees-chief-249386">VAR review</a> – following the most marginal of offside decisions against Jonny Otto.

Wolves coach Nuno Espirito Santo was booked in the aftermath after protesting with fourth official Mike Dean, but following the match he refused to be drawn into a discussion on VAR.

"These decisions are being taken by a referee miles away and he doesn't have the feel for the game," he said.

"What we don't want is (what happened), to come to Anfield, Liverpool, a fantastic team, fantastic fans, fantastic stadium and we are left celebrating a non-goal.

"We had to manage our players. We played 45 hours ago, the way the players coped, a lot of them played 90 minutes in both, it's amazing and it tells you a lot about their character."

A controversial Sadio Mane goal was enough for Premier League leaders Liverpool to secure a nervy 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers and open up a 13-point cushion over their nearest challengers on Sunday.

Premier League: Controversial Mane goal gets Liverpool past battling Wolves

Tottenham Hotspur coach Jose Mourinho has lashed out at the Premier League's congested fixture list over the Christmas period which means his side have to travel to face Norwich City two days after beating Brighton &amp; Hove Albion 2-1 on Thursday.

Spurs were without <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/mourinho-confirms-tottenham-appeal-against-wrong-red-for-son-269877">suspended forward Son Heung-min</a> and will be without the South Korean against Norwich in addition to Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks who picked up fifth yellow cards of the season against Brighton.

Tottenham visits Southampton on January&nbsp;1 for a fourth Premier League game in 11 days.

"It's a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpools-klopp-says-hectic-christmas-schedule-is-a-crime-270337">crime</a> that they are playing again on the 28th, it's against every rule of physiology and biology," Mourinho told a news conference after his side overcame Brighton thanks to second-half strikes from Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

"It's against every rule, but that's how it is and now we have three players suspended, it's completely unfair."

The Portuguese was echoing criticism of the schedule made by Liverpool coach Juergen Klopp, who said there was no reason why teams only had two days to rest between games.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-leicester-break-club-record-with-4-1-win-at-villa-267125">Leicester City</a> manager Brendan Rodgers described the calendar as "nonsense".

Brighton coach Graham Potter joined Mourinho in complaining about the impact of the games on players but said he understood that the number of fixtures over the holiday period boosted the Premier League's global appeal.

"It's very difficult in terms of selecting players, scientists who know about recovery would say it's not good but it's the Premier League, the schedule and we have to adapt," Potter said.

"It's a tricky one, on one hand, the league gives clubs lots of resources to cope with the demands. I understand it's good for the league having all these matches over Christmas but it's a different thing in terms of the performances of players."

The Premier League is introducing a winter break later this season to bring England into line with Europe's other major leagues, so each team will enjoy a free weekend in February.

But Potter said one week without games would not compensate for the extra strain during the festive period.

"The break is okay but it's not the main issue, which is that you play on December&nbsp;26 and then December&nbsp;28 and the impact that has on players," he added.

Premier League: It's a crime - Jose Mourinho rages against festive fixture pile-up

Goals from Michael Obafemi and Nathan Redmond earned Southampton a surprise 2-0 win at <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-chelseas-antonio-rudiger-wants-swift-action-against-alleged-racist-abusers-269639">Chelsea</a> in the Premier League on Thursday.

Obafemi broke the deadlock with his first goal of the season, bursting inside from the right and curling into the top corner after a tight opening half-hour.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-chelseas-frank-lampard-savours-win-over-old-mentor-jose-mourinho-269624">Frank Lampard</a> changed his side's formation from 3-4-3 to 4-2-3-1 at the break and nearly earned an instant dividend as substitute Mason Mount set up Tammy Abraham, who flashed a shot into the side netting.

Saints winger Redmond was denied by Kepa Arrizabalaga on the break but coolly finished for the visitors' second after an impressive team move to silence Stamford Bridge.

The hosts struggled to break down Southampton's tight defence, and Ralph Hasenhuttl's side rises to 14th, three points clear of the relegation zone, building on last weekend's win over <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/aston-villa-beat-liverpools-kids-to-reach-league-cup-semis-268863">Aston Villa</a>.

Premier League: Improving Saints stun Chelsea with 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge

Anthony Martial scored twice as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-united-must-focus-on-rashford-martial-dont-need-haaland-berbatov-269072">Manchester United</a> hit back in emphatic fashion from a rocky start against a benevolent <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/steve-bruce-replaces-rafa-benitezas-newcastle-united-head-coach-236628">Newcastle United</a> to open their Christmas programme with a 4-1 victory at Old Trafford on Thursday.

After a 2-0 loss at Watford last weekend, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-united-will-reinforce-squad-in-january-says-ole-gunnar-solskjaer-256463">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a> had demanded a response from his players but a yellow card for Scott McTominay after 24 seconds and going behind to Matty Longstaff's 17th-minute goal was not what he had in mind.

It was all smiles later though as Newcastle folded and Martial, Mason Greenwood and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-rashford-can-be-as-good-as-cristiano-ronaldo-says-solskjaer-267421">Marcus Rashford</a> all struck before halftime before Martial scored again early in the second half as United moved back to seventh, four points off the top four.

United have now won 21 Premier League games on Boxing Day for a win percentage of 81 per cent&nbsp;more than any other club.

With midfielder <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-uniteds-pogba-out-until-december-with-ankle-injury-258456">Paul Pogba</a> also coming on after halftime, only his second appearance since September because of injury, United will hope to end an up-and-down year with a flourish with a trip to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/burnley-fan-13-investigated-for-alleged-racist-gesture-towards-son-267397">Burnley</a> looming on the horizon on Saturday.

It was Longstaff who scored the winner in the reverse fixture at St James' Park this season, but any sense of dread for the Old Trafford faithful soon diminished as United sparked into life to play some flowing football.

Six minutes after Longstaff's goal, United were level with Martial's shot squeezing in at the near post when Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka should really have kept it out.

Newcastle offered United another gift as they tried to play out from the back but merely gave the ball to 18-year-old Greenwood who thumped a left-footed cracker in off the crossbar.

It was Greenwood's ninth goal of the season in all competitions and his emergence as a genuine goal threat has lifted the weight of expectation off the shoulders of Rashford who made it 15 for the season when he rose to head home Aaron Wan-Bissaka's inviting cross before halftime.

Newcastle's slipshod defending reached its nadir in the 51st minute when Sean Longstaff's careless back pass was pounced upon by Martial who Dubravka with ease.

"It'll be a very tough game," Lallana added. "I'm sure Bobby and Alisson will give us some inside info into them. "We watched them the other day. They were dynamic, aggressive, physical, and we will have to recover quickly."

Liverpool's hunger for titles like 'an addiction': Lallana

Raheem Sterling's second-half double ensured <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-not-on-par-with-european-elite-says-guardiola-267118">City</a> warded off a shock to win 3-1 at League One Oxford, while United ended fourth-tier Colchester United's fairytale run with a 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

Leicester set up a semi-final meeting with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/aston-villa-beat-liverpools-kids-to-reach-league-cup-semis-268863">Aston Villa</a> after the Foxes survived a second-half fightback from <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-everton-sack-manager-silva-after-merseyside-derby-humbling-266568">Everton</a> to secure their place in the last four 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park.

City have won this competition for the past two seasons with Pep Guardiola's only defeat in the League Cup coming to United three years ago.

Guardiola's men will have a chance to avenge their 2-1 Premier League defeat to the Red Devils earlier this month when the sides clash over two legs in January.

"You always want to win trophies. We've got a nice little draw coming up, it'll be exciting times," said United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. "We've shown before we can do well against City."

City made eight changes for the trip to Oxford, but still named a strong side and went ahead through Joao Cancelo's first goal for the English champions midway through the first half.

However, Oxford went toe-to-toe with their illustrious visitors all night and levelled through Matty Taylor a minute into the second half.

Oxford even had more attempts on target than City but did not have the predatory instincts of Sterling on their side as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-sterling-dropped-by-england-after-training-ground-disturbance-261542">England</a> international twice tapped home from close range to spare City's blushes.

"It was a tight game with the wind making things difficult but we did well," said Guardiola, who was accompanied by assistant Mikel Arteta despite speculation suggesting he is set to be announced as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-arsenal-slump-to-first-home-defeat-by-brighton-266535">Arsenal</a>'s new manager.

"We suffered a lot in the second half. At 2-1 they play long balls with throw-ins, corners and we struggled but it's okay."

United patience pays off&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/europa-league-manchester-united-thrash-az-basaksehir-dump-moenchengladbach-out-of-europa-league-268032">Manchester United</a> had to be patient before seeing off Colchester, who had beaten Tottenham and Crystal Palace to make the last eight.

Marcus Rashford was guilty of missing a host of chances in a goalless first half.

However,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-rashford-double-as-united-spoil-mourinhos-return-266316">England forward</a> made amends six minutes into the second period with a calm finish to register a career-best 14th goal of the season.

Rashford was also the creator of United's other two goals as Ryan Jackson turned a cross into his own net before Anthony Martial stretched to convert at the back post.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-leicester-break-club-record-with-4-1-win-at-villa-267125">Leicester</a>'s brilliant season continued as they held their nerve from the spot after blowing a comfortable lead at Everton.

The Foxes travel to City in the Premier League on Saturday, but Brendan Rodgers still named a near full-strength side and was rewarded when James Maddison and Jonny Evans struck in five first half minutes to give the visitors a 2-0 half-time lead.

But <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/everton-investigate-homophobic-chants-at-chelsea-fans-267115">Everton</a> are made of sterner stuff under caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson.

Ben Davies gave the Toffees hope 20 minutes from time and a sensational long-range strike from Leighton Baines sent the game to penalties.

Maddison then saw his spot-kick saved to start the shootout, but Kasper&nbsp;Schmeichel was Leicester's hero with saves from Cenk Tosun and Baines before Jamie Vardy scored the decisive penalty.
