Sean Dyche's Everton -- winless in 11 straight league games -- are 16th on 25 points, five points above the drop zone.

United were coming off successive league losses, to Fulham and Manchester City, that had ended an unbeaten run of four league wins.

"It was important. We had one bad result against Fulham in this calendar year," Ten Hag said. "We had to put this right and keep the pressure on the teams above us. There are many games to play. Now we are back. We will keep pressure on them and see what happens."

Liverpool have nothing but respect for their title rivals Manchester City, manager Juergen Klopp said on Friday as he played down the debate over Trent Alexander-Arnold's comments before this weekend's top of the table clash.

In an interview with FourFourTwo, the Liverpool defender said that trophies meant more to Liverpool than for City because of the financial situation at both clubs.

Everton were docked points with immediate effect in November after being found to have breached profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) relating to losses.

"An independent Appeal Board has concluded that the sanction for Everton FC's breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs), for the period ending Season 2021/22, will be an immediate six-point deduction," the Premier League said in a statement.

The original points deduction meant Everton dropped from 14th in the standings into the relegation zone with four points. The club filed an appeal against the initial deduction, which they labelled "wholly disproportionate and unjust".

"Everton can confirm an Appeal Board has concluded that the points deduction imposed by an independent Premier League Commission in November be reduced from 10 points to six points, with immediate effect," a club statement said.

The reduction means Everton move up to 15th in the standings with 25 points, five points above the relegation zone.

Phil Foden's ninth league goal of the season proved enough for champions City to overcome Bournemouth although it was not the usual slick display by Pep Guardiola's side.

Spending by English Premier League clubs fell by 715 million pounds ($912.27 million) in the January window compared with a year ago to the lowest level in three years, according to an analysis by Deloitte's Sports Business Group.

Top-flight clubs in England collectively spent about 100 million pounds this January, a drop of around 88% from the same time last year, the analysis said.

Deloitte attributed the fall to clubs taking a more prudent approach after spending heavily in the close season and to concerns over potential sanctions for failing to comply with the league's profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

PSR was introduced in 2013 to level the playing field and prevent clubs with rich ownership groups spending vast sums on players. It means clubs are permitted to lose a maximum of 105 million pounds over a three-year period.

Everton were deducted 10 points earlier this season for breaking PSR limits -- their appeal hearing began on Wednesday - and were charged last month, along with Nottingham Forest, for another breach.

Serial champions Manchester City have also been charged with numerous breaches of finance rules since being bought by the Abu Dhabi-based City Football Group in 2008. No verdict has yet been reached in that case.

The 100 million pounds spent in the January window, which closed on Thursday, is the lowest since the league spent a combined 70 million pounds on transfers in the COVID-restricted window of January 2021, the report said.

Tottenham Hotspur made the biggest signing of the window, bringing in 21-year-old Romania defender Radu Dragusin from Italian side Genoa for 25 million pounds.

Despite the sharp dip, clubs still spent 2.5 billion pounds across the two transfer windows this season, making 2023-24 the second-highest season on record after last season.

"After record breaking spending in the last three transfer windows, Premier League clubs' spending this January has been subdued," said Tim Bridge, lead partner in Deloitte's Sports Business Group.

"The more prudent approach is likely driven by the high level of spend invested during the summer window but may also have been influenced by a heightened awareness of the Premier League's financial regulations and the potential repercussions of non-compliance."

Spending in Europe's other top leagues, however, rose 80% to 455 million Euros ($495.54 million) from the 255 million euros last year, Deloitte said, with France's Ligue 1 spending the most at 190 million euros.

Both clubs have now been referred to the chair of the Judicial Panel, the Premier League said, who will appoint an independent commissions to determine the appropriate sanction.

According to the Premier League's Financial Fair Play regulations, clubs are permitted to lose a maximum of 105 million pounds ($133.63 million) over a three-year period.

"No arrests have been made at this time and enquiries are ongoing."

The deal, which will also see Ratcliffe's INEOS group take over management of the club's soccer operations, ends more than a year of uncertainty after majority owners, the Glazer family, said in November 2022 they were looking at strategic options.

The Glazers have come under heavy criticism from fans for presiding over a decline in the club's performance since former manager Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 following a period of unprecedented success.

"As a local boy and a lifelong supporter of the club, I am very pleased that we have been able to agree a deal with the Manchester United Board that delegates us management responsibility of the football operations of the club," Ratcliffe, 71, said in a statement.

"Whilst the commercial success of the club has ensured there have always been available funds to win trophies at the highest level, this potential has not been fully unlocked in recent times.

"We will bring the global knowledge, expertise and talent from the wider INEOS Sport group to help drive further improvement at the Club, while also providing funds intended to enable future investment into Old Trafford."

Luton captain Tom Lockyer has been discharged from hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest during a Premier League match, the club announced on Thursday.

Lockyer collapsed in the second half of Saturday's match at Bournemouth and the game was subsequently abandoned.

The 29-year-old has had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator fitted -- a small device used to treat people with dangerously abnormal heart rhythms.

"We are thankful to report that our captain Tom Lockyer has now begun a period of rehabilitation from the comfort of his own home after he was discharged from hospital on Wednesday," Luton said in statement.

"This encouraging news follows a successful procedure that took place on Tuesday whereby Tom had an ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator) device fitted to prevent a repeat of Saturday's incident."

The Wales defender had surgery to correct an atrial fibrillation after collapsing during Luton's Championship play-off final win against Coventry in late May.

The club said in their statement that tests had revealed the issue was "different from the atrial fibrillation".

Lockyer returned to action for the start of the new season and had made 15 appearances in all competitions before Saturday's abandoned match.

The Premier League board has decided to replay the match in full, but no date for the fixture has yet been agreed.

Christian Eriksen was fitted with an ICD after he collapsed during Denmark's European Championship game against Finland in June 2021.

Ten Hag backed the stand taken by United.

Mauricio Pochettino believes Premier League leaders Tottenham are genuine title contenders as he braces himself for a return to his former club as Chelsea boss on Monday.

Pochettino made his name as one of the world's leading managers during his five years in charge of Spurs between 2014 and 2019.

He led the club to their first Champions League final and four consecutive top-four finishes in the Premier League.

However, the Argentine was not able to end Spurs' trophy drought that stretches back to 2008.

Current Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is off to the best start of any new manager in the Premier League after taking 26 from a possible 30 points in his first 10 games.

Spurs have not won the English top flight since 1961, but Pochettino said they have to be taken seriously as contenders.

"Ange and the coaching staff, they are doing a fantastic job and then of course very good players, very good team," said Pochettino. "You can feel they can be a contender.

"Of course it's early in the season but they are showing the quality to be contenders."

It remains to be seen what kind of reception awaits Pochettino at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs had struggled badly in the time between his surprise sacking four years ago and the arrival of Postecoglou.

But his decision to return to the Premier League at a London rival has not gone down well with some sections of the Spurs support.

"The most important thing is people know that we cannot forget all that we lived together, amazing memories there," he said.

Everton have been sold to 777 Partners, the struggling Premier League club said on Friday, with the U.S. private equity firm taking over from Farhad Moshiri in a deal reports said was worth more than 550 million pounds ($685 million).

The Miami-based investment fund said it had signed an agreement with British-Iranian billionaire Moshiri to acquire his 94.1% stake in the club. The deal is expected to be closed by the end of the year, a club statement said.

"We are truly humbled by the opportunity to become part of the Everton family as custodians of the club, and consider it a privilege to be able to build on its proud heritage and values," said Josh Wander, founder and managing partner of 777 Partners.

The firm 777 Partners has a number of clubs in its portfolio, including Italian side Genoa and Belgian team Standard Liege, while they also have stakes in LaLiga club Sevilla and Australian A-League side Melbourne Victory.

Moshiri, a former Arsenal shareholder, first bought a 49.9% stake in Everton in 2016. By January 2022, he had increased his stake to 94.1% with a 100 million pounds capital injection.

But despite investing nearly 750 million euros ($799.65 million) in transfers to build the squad since Moshiri's arrival, Everton have slipped out of the top half of the table to fight relegation battles in recent seasons.

Everton's most recent figures showed a fifth straight year of losses -- 44.7 million pounds for the 2021-22 season -- with their total loss over that period amounting to over 430 million pounds.

Under Premier League rules, teams can make a maximum loss of 105 million pounds over three years, although special allowances were made for the COVID-19 pandemic. 
Everton are also in the midst of an investigation into alleged breaches of Premier League financial fair play rules, but chairman Bill Kenwright said in April they were confident the Merseyside club were compliant of all financial rules.

The club is set to go before an independent commission next month over the alleged breaches.

They have also invested in building a new stadium on Bramley Moore-Dock in Liverpool's Vauxhall area, with Moshiri saying it would cost 760 million pounds.

Everton's statement said the investment from 777 Partners would strengthen the club's balance sheet and guarantee "full funding" of the stadium.

"We are committed to partnering with the local community over the long term, working on important projects such as the development of Bramley-Moore Dock as a world-class stadium venue," Wander added.

Everton narrowly avoided relegation from the top flight in each of the last two seasons and are currently 18th in the standings without a win in four games this season.

"It is through my lengthy discussions with 777 that I believe they are the best partners to take our great club forward, with all the benefits of their multi-club investment model," Moshiri said. "Today is an important next step in the successful development of Everton and I look forward to closely following as our Club goes from strength to strength."

Chelsea won their first competitive match under Coach Mauricio Pochettino with a 3-0 home victory over Premier League new boys Luton Town on Friday thanks to two goals by Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson's first strike for the Londoners.

Sterling received the ball from wing back Malo Gusto, cut in from the right and weaved his way through Luton's defence before shooting low into the far corner in the 17th minute for one of his best goals in a Chelsea shirt.

The duo combined again in the 68th when Gusto ran onto a pass from British record transfer signing Moises Caicedo, looking composed on his first start for Chelsea, and the Frenchman crossed for a simple finish by Sterling.

Seven minutes later, the England winger turned provider as he crossed for Jackson and the Senegal striker stretched out a boot to score his first Chelsea goal since signing from Villarreal in June.

It was the big-spending Blues' first win of the season after an opening day 1-1 draw against Liverpool and last Sunday's 3-1 defeat at West Ham United and only their second win in 15 Premier League games including last season's dreadful run.

Luton, playing just their second top-division game in 31 years - after opening with a 4-1 defeat at Brighton &amp; Hove Albion - and with a side assembled largely from players out of the lower divisions, spurned a chance to level on the hour.

Ryan Giles had the goal at his mercy but Gusto half-blocked his shot and keeper Robert Sanchez reached for the looping ball.

The home fans responded enthusiastically as Chelsea recorded their first home league win since March 4 and Pochettino lived up to his promise to get the Blues playing attractive football after the struggles of last season under Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, both of whom were fired.

Sterling has flourished under the Argentine having struggled to find consistent form for much of the time since his move from Manchester City in July last year.

"I had a conversation with the gaffer earlier last week and we've gone through the role and I know exactly what he needs from me and it's as simple as that," Sterling said. "I came in a difficult period, that's all finished," he added. "I think the most important thing, I've had a look at myself and I'm a person who always tries to analyse what I've been doing, what I've done wrong, what I can change."

In a less spectacular way, Friday's win was also significant for the way Caicedo slotted into the anchor role in Chelsea's midfield, allowing Enzo Fernandez and Conor Gallagher to venture further forward and stretch Luton who were outclassed.
