Peruvian President Pedro Castillo’s sister-in-law sent to jail over corruption charges, inner circle on target

In an unsuccessful attempt to detain Yenifer Paredes, President Pedro Castillo's sister-in-law, for alleged corruption and money laundering, Peruvian police and public prosecution officers conducted a raid on the presidential palace in Lima on Tuesday.

The prosecutor's office sought a "raid" of the "residential sector of the government palace," the Court of Justice stated in a statement, prompting the unusual police operation.

The search for Paredes, who now appears to be on the run from justice, lasted nearly four hours until the agents gave up and left the presidential mansion.

Paredes, 26, resides in the presidential residence within the Government Palace along with Castillo and his family.

A mayor from Castillo's home province of Chota, Jose Nenil Medina, and businesspeople Hugo and Angie Espino were detained as part of simultaneous judicial operations in different parts of the capital for allegedly participating in the same corruption network.

The 10 day first detention of individuals concerned was approved by the court.

Midway through July, Paredes had already been called to appear before a commission of the Peruvian Congress and provide testimony to the public prosecutor's office.

President Castillo is the subject of five active investigations by the public prosecutor's office. He is also under investigation for possible corruption.

Castillo described the operation as "an illegal raid" that was a part of a plot to have him removed from office in a message that was televised late on Tuesday.

"Today, the Government Palace and the Presidential House have once again been violated with an illegal raid endorsed by a judge, coincidentally when a request is being made for my disqualification for five years to take away from the Peruvian people their legitimate government," said Castillo, a 52-year-old former teacher and trade unionist.

Earlier on Tuesday, a legislative investigation recommended disqualifying and legally punishing Castillo due to his alleged consideration of a plan to grant access to the sea for landlocked Bolivia through Peru, a claim he disputes.

In July, Castillo finished his first year in office. He has so far been the subject of two impeachment procedures in Congress, and surveys show that the public disapproves of him by a margin of 74%.

The fourth member of the presidential entourage under investigation for possible wrongdoing is Paredes.

Castillo's former presidential secretary, a nephew who worked as an adviser, a former transportation minister, both of whom are wanted by the law, and other members of his tight circle are also up for prosecution.

Peru, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of cocaine, has been negotiating a deal with the United States for “non-lethal” assistance in intercepting planes carrying illicit drugs. Peru’s anti-drug chief on Wednesday (July 14) said the country wants to reach an agreement with the US as soon as possible to assist it to combat the use of planes to smuggle cocaine at a time when coca planting has been expanding. The US discontinued its support to Peru when the Peruvian Air Force shot down a jet after mistaking it for one belonging to drug traffickers, killing two American citizens, Reuters reported.

Ricardo Soberon, head of the national anti-drug organization DEVIDA in a conference stated that the efforts to destroy coca farms, the plants used to make cocaine, have been hampered by rising global demand for the drug. Soberon further said that “the concept of shared responsibility’ needs to be reviewed.

The Peruvian authorities have said that the forest fire near the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu is finally under control after firefighters working in the area for around three days. There were concerns that the fire can be harmful to one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites, but the firefighters were able to contain it. According to official sources, the fire ended up destroying around 100 acres of land and the culture ministry believes that it was sparked by farmers who had been clearing land.

A network of passageways under over 3,000-year-old temple in the Peruvian Andes seems to have been found by archaeologists, media reports said. The temple, which is called Chavin de Huantar, is located in the north-central Andes. It was once a religious and administrative centre for people living in the region.

The discovery of the passageways was made earlier in May. It has features, which seemed to have been built earlier than the labyrinthine galleries of the temple, as per John Rick, archaeologist, Stanford University. He was also involved in the excavation.

Thousands of students on Friday thronged streets of Lima, capital of Peru on Friday (May 13) to protest against law that aims to remove comprehensive sex education in schools.

Organisers of the protests said that university groups, sex education activists, feminist collectives and other people were part of the rallies. These rallies were also held in other major cities in the country.

Sex Education is a topic of hot debate across the world. Conservative opinion states that such education 'unnecessarily' exposes teenagers to sexual topics while supporters of sex education say that if teenagers get to know about their own bodies through a formalised curriculum, they will be in a much better position to maintain a good sexual health.

The Associated Press quoted a medical student Wendy Yanac who supported demonstrators calling for Peru President Pedro Castillo to veto changes in the law that would do away with sex education in school.

On Friday, protesters expressed their opposition to another bill. If passed, this bill would roll back 2015 reforms that created Sunedu (National Supervisory Authority for Higher Education), an institution to supervise college education.

The new bill provides for representation to universities on the Sunedu. Critics say such a step would weaken the independent nature of the institution.

Woman who was pronounced dead by a hospital in Peru after a fatal car crash stunned mourners at her funeral after she knocked on her coffin. Rosa Isabel Cespedes Callaca’s funeral service was being carried out in Peru’s Lambayque city and as her relatives lifted her coffin on their shoulders they heard a knock, they immediately lowered it. On opening the coffin, they found her alive.

“She opened her eyes and was sweating. I immediately went to my office and called the police," Juan Segundo Cajo, the cemetery caretaker was quoted by Mirror.

With the hope to save her, Callaca’s family rushed her to Referential Hospital Ferrenafe where the medics put her on life-support as they saw she had weak signs of life. Sadly, she was pronounced dead again a few hours later.

"We want to know why my niece reacted when we were taking her to be buried. We have the videos in which she pushes and touches the coffin,” her aunt told local media.

'Dead' woman knocks on her coffin, shocks mourners

Peru's government will present a bill to allow for chemical castration as a penalty for raping a minor, Cabinet members told reporters on Wednesday, following national outrage over the rape of a 3-year-old girl.

"We consider that this measure will be an additional penalty for those who commit rape," said Justice Minister Felix Chero.

He said the government hopes those who rape minors will serve prison time and be chemically castrated at the end of their sentences.

The move comes after a 48-year-old man was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of raping the 3-year-old girl, who had to undergo surgery after the ordeal.

President Pedro Castillo, a socially conservative former schoolteacher, has been supportive of the bill, saying people who rape minors need to be punished in an exemplary fashion.

"We hope that congress will back (the bill)," Castillo said earlier this week.
