<p>Rishi Sunak seems all set to become the next British prime minister with the former finance minister gaining the support of several top leaders in the Conservative Party. Sunak’s bid was further strengthened on Sunday as former PM Boris Johnson ruled himself out of the leadership race.</p>

However, the former Prime Minister decided to never launch his campaign stating that it was “simply not the right thing to do” and “not the right time”.</p>

<p>While 60 Conservative Party leaders publicly stated their support for Johnson to return to office, he claimed that he had the backing of 102 – enough to secure the mandate in the race.</p>

Voting begins in Britain's prime minister contest, Truss wins cabinet backing

In a month from now, the United Kingdom will have its next Prime Minister. The final two contenders former chancellor Rishi Sunak and UK foreign secretary Liz Truss have clashed on a host of issues but it seems that Liz Truss who's a Tory favorite has now gained support of her fellow competitors who are now out of the Tory leadership race. In the latest, Truss managed to receive the backing of a lawmaker she narrowly defeated.

<p>As another candidate was eliminated to leave three contenders in the race to become the United Kingdom's new prime minister, former finance minister Rishi Sunak again topped the latest vote.</p>

<p>With longshot candidate Kemi Badenoch trailing on 59 and therefore eliminated from the contest, Sunak garnered 118 votes.</p>

<p>In the second place was former defence minister Penny Mordaunt on 92 followed by Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on 86.</p>

<p>The UK will either get its third female leader or its first British Asian prime minister as a result of the vote.</p>

<p>Britain's de facto deputy prime minister David Lidington also resigned from the government ahead of Boris Johnson being appointed prime minister.</p>

<p>"I wrote to @BorisJohnson yesterday to congratulate him on his election, to wish him well &amp; to say I've decided that after 20 yrs on the front bench it's the right moment to move on," Lidington said on Twitter.</p>

<p>He joins the Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond, international development secretary Rory Stewart and justice minister David Gauke in resigning from the cabinet.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Britain's defence secretary Penny Mordaunt too resigned. Mordaunt said she will not serve in new Prime Minister Boris Johnson's team of senior ministers.</p>

<p>"I'm heading to the backbenches from where the PM will have my full support," Mordaunt, a Brexit supporter who backed Johnson's opponent Jeremy Hunt in the leadership race, said on Twitter. She had also been serving as Women and Equalities minister.</p>
