Gold Cup 2023: Panama beat USA in THRILLER shootout to reach final; to face Mexico on Sunday

An earthquake of 6.6 magnitude struck in the Gulf of Darien near the border of Panama and Colombia late on Wednesday night, May 24, at 10:05 pm local time, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Quoting the USGS, Reuters reported that the tremors were felt in both countries.&nbsp;

<h2>A second earthquake strikes</h2>

Nine minutes after the first earthquake hit the region, another temblor with&nbsp; 4.9 magnitude on the Richter Scale struck the same location. The USGS reported about the aftershocks of the second earthquake.

Several follow-up quakes measuring less than 4 in magnitude have been reported since last night.&nbsp;

As reported by the USGS, the epicentre of the earthquake was around 40 kilometres (25 miles) off the coast of Panama's eastern town of Puerto Obaldia and both quakes struck at a depth of 10km (6.21 miles).&nbsp;

<h2>No immediate reports of damages</h2>

The National Civil Protection Agency of Panama, Sinaproc said no immediate damage to properties was reported, and that they are still monitoring the situation. Officials from the Columbian metropolis of Medellin also said the earthquake did not cause any damage. However, social media users have reported about the earthquake stating it triggered strong shaking on both sides of the border.

The quakes tremors were felt on both sides of the border. As reported by the officials of Panama, it was one of the strongest earthquakes recorded in the area in recent years.

The last recorded strongest earthquake in Panama was in the year 1962 when an earthquake of magnitude 7.4 on the Richter scale hit the region.

Sinaproc reported that the tremors were felt in the capital city of Panama and its neighbouring region of West Panama. The Caribbean region of Guna Yala also felt the strong tremors of the quake.

<h2>No possibility of a tsunami&nbsp;</h2>

Authorities in Colombia and the United States have ruled out the possibility of a tsunami, with the US Tsunami Warning System specifically stating that there was no tsunami warning as of the moment.&nbsp;

However, the court said that no matter how many changes happen in reality, for now, gay marriages lack "conventional and constitutional recognition."

It added that the family code is objectively and reasonably justified in the general interests of giving precedence to those unions capable of establishing families, giving continuity to humans and society.

As per AFP, the Catholic Church which opposes same-sex couples holds a strong influence in Panama.

Currently, Costa Rica remains the only Central American country to recognise same-sex marriages.

'Largest repatriation in history': Netherlands returns over 300 ancient artifacts to Panama

A desperate cry for assistance was made on social media by a presidential candidate in Panama after his helicopter crashed into the country's jungle.&nbsp;

The video was recorded by Dimitri Flores, an independent candidate running in the 2024 elections, from the scene of the crash in a mountainous region in western Panama.

Mr. Flores was one of the six passengers on board.&nbsp;Although, everyone in the helicopter&nbsp;has&nbsp;been rescued, some of them have&nbsp;sustained fractures.&nbsp;

As reported by the BBC, Mr. Flores provided a rough location of the crash site and said that several were injured.&nbsp;

In the footage, Mr. Flores can be heard saying, "We had an accident here, brother, here at 4,500ft (1,400m) in the highlands," as he points to the helicopter's wreckage hidden behind dense bushes.

Under the new legislation,&nbsp;Panamanians may use crypto assets as means of payment for any civil or commercial operation not prohibited by law in the country.

Panama&nbsp;is on the European Union's list of tax havens, and Romain Dromard, chief executive officer at financial investment advisory firm K&amp;B Family Office, said the crypto bill would not help it appear more transparent.

"Panama&nbsp;was already in a bad position and these payment methods skip the due diligence processes that international organizations are asking&nbsp;Panama&nbsp;to embrace," he said.

The bill, which now passes to President Laurentino Cortizo to be signed, was approved in the assembly with 38 votes in favor, two abstentions and no votes against.

Belisario Castillo Saenz, chief executive officer of tokenisation firm Feänor Corp, argued that crypto assets could help the unbanked, given that internet penetration is high in&nbsp;Panama&nbsp;but only one in four people have bank accounts.

Still, K&amp;B's Dromard said the role banks will play under the new rules is unclear and forecast that it will take years for traditional institutions to use the assets.

In addition, small and medium businesses would not be able to switch to such highly volatile assets, he argued.

Indian drone firm Garuda Aerospace is working on fulfilling orders from foreign customers for 8,000 drones that serve purposes including agriculture (pesticide spraying), industrial inspection, and mapping.

Besides these drones that will have to be delivered to clients across the UAE, Malaysia, and Panama, the company is working on fulfilling orders with Indian government-run and private entities.

WION&nbsp;spoke to Agnishwar Jayaprakash, the Founder and CEO of Garuda Aerospace, to understand how the company is scaling up capacity to meet the demand.&nbsp;

Garuda’s drones recently completed mapping of over 1000 villages for Survey of India - Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh as part of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swamitva scheme, which aims to provide digital records of land ownership. When queried about the pace at which this was done and the scale of operation, Agnishwar explained that a single drone was able to map five villages (each measuring up to 3 sq km) in a day and that they had deployed a sizable fleet to map 1000 villages in a month. Their work involved not just aerial mapping, but also providing the final output of processed map data.&nbsp;

Their work for clients in India includes services such as pipeline inspection for Indian Oil Corporation Limited, the National Highways Authority of India Surveillance Project (to monitor highway construction) and catering to the mapping and topographical survey needs of energy companies like Reliance, Adani, Vedanta, and Tata projects, among others.&nbsp;

On the steep target of having to deliver 8,000 drones to foreign clients by March 2022, Agnishwar said that the company has ramped up manufacturing capacity by opening two new facilities. "Earlier, we could churn out up to 30 drones per day from our lone Chennai facility, but with the new units in Gurgaon and Hosur, we can produce up to a total of 100-150 drones a day. We had the opportunity to invest and expand this way owing to the new orders and encouraging revenue, " he added.&nbsp;

According to Agnishwar, selling agriculture and mapping drones to foreign countries would mean that Garuda would have to setup an assembly facility and provide support services in the respective countries, as well. "They will give us the land and manpower support. We’ll send a small team, parts, tools, and equipment to supervise and provide training.

While he does admit that delivery of all 8,000 drones by March 2022 is an aggressive target, he hopes to enable delivery of a significant portion of the order within the deadline.&nbsp;

The findings have been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS).

Scientists believe the South American and Caribbean tectonic plates collided around 15 million years ago, causing volcanic activity that eventually formed a thin strip of land linking the Americas and separating the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

The forging of the Americas resulted in a mass migration of animals, while the separation of the two oceans transformed the world’s climate and prompted the development of new species.

According to David Bekaert, a postdoctoral scholar in marine chemistry and geochemistry at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, the Cocos tectonic plate is diving down and pushing oceanic crust under the continental crust of North America.

"Different sources of geological material typically have different compositions, so we can track the contribution from different regions of the mantle," Bekaert said.

The subduction of the Cocos plate under North America has the capacity to cause large earthquakes, including the 2017 Chiapas quake, a magnitude-8.1 that killed dozens.

"We found that in particular places of Central America, namely western Panama and behind the volcanic arc in Costa Rica, we have some exotic signatures [of geochemistry] that really resemble what you have in the Galápagos Islands," Bekaert said.&nbsp;

"Just beneath Panama, there is a hole, a window through the slab, that allows for the influx of this mantle component," he added.

Elieser Rodriguez emerges blackened from the thick smoke of burning pyres slowly transforming the limbs of mangroves into charcoal -- a livelihood much maligned by environmental and climate campaigners in Panama.&nbsp;

He says he has no other choice for a living.&nbsp;

"This is the daily survival of my family, of my children, of my wife," Rodriguez told AFP in El Espave, a town about 80 kilometers (50 miles) southwest of Panama City with a mangrove forest as its backyard.

"I am 30 years old and have been working at this from 16, 15. It does not bring me wealth... this is a means of survival."

About 200 families in El Espave, on the banks of the Bahia de Chame, a large bay, work in the production of mangrove charcoal, which they sell to pizzerias and restaurants.

Panama, according to its environment ministry, boasts more than 437,000 acres (177,000 hectares) of mangrove, of which 35 percent, including around Chame bay, is protected.

Harvesting the mangroves is prohibited, but for the residents of El Espave, making coal from the tree is an ancient tradition, a way of life, and their only source of income.

Rodriguez's grandfather and great-grandfather did the same work in the days before the electric saws and boat engines used today.

"If they close this place, what are we going to do? How are we going to live? How are we going to eat?" asked Dario Hidalgo, 42, whose job is to build the coal-making "ovens."

"And the children who are growing up, what will become of them? What will they do? I think that if there is nothing they will turn to crime, to easy money," he told AFP.

Carbon sinks

The community and the government are keen to find a solution to this age-old conflict between conservation and survival.

According to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), mangroves protect coastlines from erosion and extreme weather events, improve water quality by filtering, and serve as nurseries for many marine creatures.

They also help fight climate change -- sequestering as much as 22.8 million tons of carbon each year in their leaves, trunks, roots and the soil.

They can contain more carbon per square meter than tropical rainforests, according to UNEP.&nbsp;

Panama's mangroves, according to the environment ministry, hold some 52 million tons.

But if degraded or lost, mangroves become sources of carbon dioxide and contribute to global warming -- which threatens their survival in turn, particularly through sea level rise.

At El Espave, the sea enters the bay gently, forming narrow passageways to the coast.&nbsp;

Via these water routes, Rodriguez and his colleagues go out by boat every morning, travelling some 15 minutes to areas where the mangrove trunks grow thick. They fell them with machetes and electric saws.

One of the men, Israel Gonzalez, 46, says the thinner plants are not touched, to preserve the ecosystem.

"When we cut here, we always leave two, three or four trees for the seed to fall and continue to reproduce," he explained.

The community was also working on building a mangrove nursery, he said, to plant new seedlings and expand the forest they depend on so much.&nbsp;

According to UNEP, over a quarter of the world's original mangrove cover has already disappeared.

Environment ministry official Jose Julio Casas said authorities were examining ways to work with the community "so that they can use the resource in a responsible way."

Coal or jobs

Currently engaged in an activity that is technically illegal, they "have to comply with a series of requirements because if they are going to use it, they themselves must help in the process of protecting and conserving the ecosystem," Casas told AFP.

At El Espave, charcoal production happens near the port, in an area dotted with pyramid-shaped pyres smoldering like small volcanos.

Each "oven" smolders for about four days before being doused with water. Once cooled down, the soil is removed to reveal the coal underneath.

Each pyre yields about 120 bags of coal that can collectively be sold for about $500 -- an estimated $150 profit per "oven."

Besides its contribution to health-threatening air-pollution, coal burning is also one of the major sources of planet-warming greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere.

"We are waiting for them (the government) to tell us how we can continue to produce charcoal, or that they bring us job proposals," Batista.

"When we cut here, we always leave two, three or four trees for the seed to fall and continue to reproduce," he explained. The agreement followed a meeting in the town of Meteti, in southern&nbsp;Panama, attended by Colombian vice president and foreign minister Marta Lucia Ramirez and Panamanian foreign minister Erika Mouynes, in addition to other ministers and senior security officials.

Another Panamanian delegation will travel to&nbsp;Colombia&nbsp;Monday "to determine a number, a quota of migrants" who can "be received in a safe and orderly manner by the Panamanian side," Mouynes said.

Both captains were released from detention and were believed to have left Indonesia with the rest of the crew Friday despite their sentences.

In January, the tankers were spotted off Kalimantan, Indonesia's section of Borneo island, and were later seized after the crew failed to respond to radio calls.
