A Pakistani Christian woman, Asia Bibi, who had spent eight years on death row in a Pakistan prison over blasphemy charges has left the country, her lawyer, Saif Ul Malook 
confirmed to Reuters on Wednesday.

"I have inquired within available channels, and according to them she has left for Canada," Bibi's lawyer, Saif Ul Malook told Reuters.

Asia Bibi was in protective custody in Pakistan after her acquittal last October by the country's Supreme Court. She was on death row since 2010. Bibi was charged for Blasphemy over the incident that took place in 2009. Her daughters are believed to have already fled to Canada, reports said.

Attorney General Mansoor Ali Khan responded that no actionable evidence was found against anyone.

The judge reprimanded the defence ministry for its failure to take action and ordered it to investigate the army officers in four weeks and file a reply.

The order by the court came after the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) submitted its report in the court on February 9 and also sought its help to further probe the matter.

In its report, the FIA highlighted several reasons due to which the investigation could not reach a logical conclusion.

It said that "no army officer gave any statement of handing over money to any private person directly."

The court in its 2012 judgment said that former army chief Gen Aslam Baig and former ISI chief Lt-Gen Asad Durrani were also involved in the case. 
Earlier, Durrani in one of his affidavits submitted in the apex court accepted that money was given to a group of politician to influence elections in 1990.

"How did you have the audacity to term the court's decision regarding hike in school fee 'a draconian judgment'. Your letters to parents are in contempt of court," Justice Ahsan told the private school authorities.

Justice Gulzar added, "What kind of things do you write? We should close your schools and can even nationalise them. We can ask the government to handle the administrative affairs of your schools."

The letter pertained to the apex court's decision ordering a 20 per cent decrease in the fee charged by the private schools, Express News reported.

The December 13, 2018 order was applicable to private schools charging over Rs 5,000 per month. It also restricted them to a maximum 8 per cent increase per year with the permission of a regulator. The apex court also directed administrations to return half the fee charged for summer vacations or adjust the amount, it added.

The private school's counsel clarified that the administration did not intent to disrespect the court.&nbsp;

"We apologise to the court. No such thing will happen again."

Justice Gulzar responded, "You can submit a written apology and we will take a look. We will get an audit done to check whether you have black or white money."

The Netherlands last year granted Malook a temporary stay, but Voordewind said Malook will "unfortunately lose his asylum status in the Netherlands."

The allegations against Bibi date back to 2009, when Muslim women accused her of blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammed, a charge punishable by death under the colonial-era legislation.

Her case drew the attention of international rights groups and swiftly became the most high-profile in the country.

If the court refuses to allow the appeal, it will remove the last legal hurdle facing Bibi, who is a prime target in conservative Muslim-majority Pakistan and remains in protective custody.

Meanwhile, the Dutch ambassador to Pakistan is to return to Islamabad next month after receiving a death threat last year, reportedly from Islamists angry over anti-Islam tweets by far-right politician Geert Wilders, Dutch media reported earlier Saturday.

Ardi Stoios-Braken "will fly back to Islamabad in early February," the daily tabloid Algemeen Dagblad said.

She was on leave in the Netherlands in late October last year when she received word "that a letter arrived at the embassy from Pakistani authorities."

"The letter spoke of a 'specific threat' and was related to the Mohammed cartoon contest which had already been cancelled months before," the paper said.

Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok said in November that Stoios-Braken, a veteran diplomat, faced "threats" in Pakistan, apparently over "blasphemous depictions" by Wilders on Twitter.

Wilders in August called off a planned Prophet Mohammed cartoon competition that stirred anger in Pakistan.

Pakistan's interior ministry in October wrote a secret memo on plans to "target" the Dutch ambassador by the hardline Islamist Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan party (TLP), media from both countries reported at the time.

Asia Bibi's lawyer returns to Pakistan to 'hopefully assist client for last time'

This is a story of Pakistan's Khadija Siddiqui, a 24-year-old law student who was brutally stabbed 23 times in Lahore on May 3, 2016, by Shah Hussain, a fellow student from the university.

Khadija's battle for justice was finally honoured by the Pakistan Supreme Court on Wednesday, January 23. The Court sentenced the guilty to prison.

Back in 2016, Khadija was just 21, waiting to take on the world. Little did she know on that fateful summer afternoon, three days before her law exam, that she would suffer an attack that would scar her face and life forever.&nbsp;

Siddiqui shared her story with WION, stating that her determination and will to fight brought her justice and the confidence with which she faces the world fearlessly. &nbsp;

"It was around 2 pm. I, along with my driver had gone to pick my sister from school in our car. Everything was pre-meditated. He had parked his bike and was waiting for me to appear," she said.

Hussain attacked her as she was about to get into the backseat of her car.&nbsp;

"He kept stabbing me like a mad man and no one came forward to help," she explained adding that it was her driver who managed to fight Hussain and save the sisters.

"I had refused to continue being friends with him in the university when I sensed there was something that was not right about him," Siddiqui told WION.&nbsp;

Khadija believes Hussain's male ego was wounded and drove him to commit the heinous crime. For four months she fought death.

"I had 200 stitches. 50 in the neck alone. I could barely open my mouth to eat", she told as he fought back tears.

Her body was scarred but her soul was not willing to give up just yet. Khadija wanted to live to fight for justice.

"It was a tough decision we had to make, the decision to pursue justice", she said.&nbsp;

Her family was aware they were up against the son of a famous lawyer but they never gave up hope, their decision to fight the battle for justice never faltered.

"He is the son of a lawyer and the legal fraternity was out there to protect him with all their might and that was the biggest hurdle," she noted.

"They thought they could use their power and authority to suppress my cause. Being a law student myself I just could not let that happen".

The course of judgement was a long and an extremely difficult one. Hussain's father had vowed to use everything in his power to stop his son from being jailed. Though the judicial magistrate had sentenced Hussain to seven-year imprisonment in July 2017, he was later acquitted by the Lahore High Court.

There were numerous threats. Khadija had to suffer sexual harassment and face many hurdles during the legal process.

The guilty had left no stone unturned to scare the family into submission. However, instead of feeling threatened, the family became more determined to shatter the arrogance of those guilty and ensure justice prevailed.

"Women who have suffered similar fate have come up to me and thanked me for not giving up. They said unlike them, I should not give up, that I should be an example they failed to be due to lack of support," she shared.&nbsp;

"Women are not weak. Just that we have been conditioned to believe otherwise. I was fighting to help Pakistani women get rid of this psyche," Khadija noted.

The Pakistan Supreme Court finally ruled in her favour. The Court accepted Khadija's appeal to overturn the acquittal and declared the Lahore High Court's verdict null and void. Hussain was taken into custody from outside Pakistan Supreme Court.

Khadija clearly remembers the moment the judgement was pronounced and describes it as 'overwhelming'. She was aware of the significance of the case, how the ruling would go down in history and how she had to win the case for the sake of all the women who looked up to her.

"I could not jeopardise the future of justice for women in the country. I felt it was my responsibility to keep fighting till I won."

"This victory is not mine alone. It is a victory for every woman out there," she emphasised.

With the nightmare behind her now, Khadija wishes to continue studying law so that she can be well equipped to take up cases of human rights violation in future. She wishes to practice criminal law and fight cases of violence committed against women.

"Do not suffer in silence" is Khadija's parting message to all women. She called out women to raise their voice against the injustices they suffer. "Stop victim shaming," she pleaded.

"The truth you will emerge as victorious. It took me three years but I did win finally," she concluded.

Pakistan's Supreme Court Thursday ordered the government led by Prime Minister Imran Khan to lift the travel ban imposed on opposition leader Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and the Sindh Chief Minister, and asked the country's anti-corruption body to probe their involvement in Rs 35 billion 'fake accounts case'.

As many as 172 suspects were placed on the Exit Control List (ECL) on the recommendations of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed by the apex court.

A person cannot fly abroad if his name is placed on the ECL.

The Supreme Court, in a detailed judgement, ordered the government to remove the names of opposition Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah from the ECL.

It, however, referred the report and material collected by the JIT in the Rs 35 billion 'fake accounts case' to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Dawn news reported.

The JIT probe focused on "32 fake accounts" which were allegedly used to give massive financial benefits to former president Asif Ali Zardari, his sister Faryal Talpur and several others.

"Removing of the names will not prevent (the) NAB to probe and in case sufficient material is found connecting these individuals with cognisable offences, it will not be precluded from making an appropriate request to the federal government to place their names on (the) ECL again or take any appropriate action provided by law," according to the judgement authored by Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan.

The apex court in its earlier instructions asked the government to delete names of Bilawal and Shah from the ECL but the Cabinet waited for the detailed judgment.

After the judgement, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said the government will decide whether it should implement the court orders or file a review petition.

Justice Ahsan was part of the three-judge bench that last year took a suo-motu cognisance after it emerged that several big names were involved in money laundering through fake accounts.

Currently, a Karachi court is hearing the case against Zardari and Talpur for alleged money laundering.

Pakistan SC asks Imran Khan government to lift travel ban on opposition leaders

Describing Pakistan's rapidly growing population as a "ticking timebomb", the Supreme Court Tuesday urged religious scholars, the civil society and the government to back population control measures, including a two children per family norm, in the Muslim-majority country.

A three-member bench led by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar made the observations during a hearing in a case related to population control in Pakistan, now the world's fifth most populous.

In its order, the Supreme Court urged religious scholars, the civil society and the government to take steps to promote population control in the country.

The bench referred to the increasing population as a "ticking timebomb", the Express Tribune reported.

"The increasing population is a burden on the country's resources. It is about the future of the next generation. It would be unfortunate if the population is not controlled. Two children per home will help to control the population. There is a need for a campaign on the matter," the apex court was quoted as saying by the report.

"The entire nation needs to stand together to control the population," the chief justice said.

According to the 2017 census, Pakistan's population was approximately 207,774,520, making it the world's fifth most populous nation only behind China, India, the United States and Indonesia.

In July, the Supreme Court took suo motu action on increase in population. The chief justice, on the occasion, remarked that there is dire need to formulate a uniform and effective policy to curb Pakistan's population growth.

On Monday, the apex court came down hard on Health Secretary Captain (Rtd) Zahid Saeed after he admitted that the department could not devise and implement effective measures to control population growth, Duniya News reported.

An angry Chief Justice Nisar remarked, "how could surveys be done while sitting in offices?"

Subsequently, the court ordered him to submit a progress report to the court every three months.

The secretary informed the court that a plan has been devised to control the population growth rate which has to be brought down to 1.5 per cent by 2025.&nbsp;

The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has also voiced its concern at the rapid increase of population in the country, calling it a looming disaster.

In a recent press statement, the PMA said the birth of 15,000 babies in Pakistan on the 1st day of 2019 was alarming.

The PMA thinks that it is a distressing situation as at the moment as 60 per cent of the national population stands below the age of 25 years; 25 million children are not going to school and 90 per cent the population is not being provided with clean drinking water. Malnutrition is another big issue and food scarcity is a big problem, the association said.

The PMA said it believes that the unchecked rise in the population is a looming disaster, and concrete steps should be taken to implement family planning and make people-friendly economic policies to overcome these difficulties and save the coming generations.

The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has also voiced its concern at the rapid increase of population in the country, calling it a looming disaster. In a recent press statement, the PMA said the birth of 15,000 babies in Pakistan on the 1st day of 2019 was alarming. The PMA thinks that it is a distressing situation as at the moment as 60 per cent of the national population stands below the age of 25 years; 25 million children are not going to school and 90 per cent the population is not being provided with clean drinking water. Malnutrition is another big issue and food scarcity is a big problem, the association said. The PMA said it believes that the unchecked rise in the population is a looming disaster, and concrete steps should be taken to implement family planning and make people-friendly economic policies to overcome these difficulties and save the coming generations. Upholding the lower court's decision, the Supreme Court bench threw out the NAB's request to revoke the Sharifs' bails, observing that the anti-corruption watchdog had failed to provide the "grounds for cancellation of bail".&nbsp;

The IHC did not exceed its authority in granting bail to the convicts of the Avenfield case, Geo TV quoted the bench as observing.&nbsp;

Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, who will be sworn in as the country's next chief justice later this month, stated that the IHC decision was temporary and the apex court would not interfere with the decision.&nbsp;

"The person [Nawaz Sharif] is in prison and there is no allegation about the misuse of bail. We have a Constitution to follow and we will make sure justice prevails. There will be a fair trial in every case," Justice Khosa remarked.

Responding to the apex court verdict, Maryam Nawaz, daughter of Sharif, said she was thankful to Allah Almighty.&nbsp;

She, however, said that true relief and happiness would be when her father came back home from jail.

The former premier has been a serving seven-year imprisonment at Kot Lakhpat prison after being declared guilty of corruption in Al-Azizia case.

Sharif has already filed an appeal in the Islamabad High Court against the sentence.

"I am thankful to Allah Almighty for today's decision. The fact is that not for a moment was I concerned about myself. Insha'Allah true relief &amp; happiness would be when my father comes back home. Reacting to the top court's decision, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry took to Twitter and hailed the decision saying Sharif is still is in prison and hence the decision will not have any effect on the present state of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar has said that the country's Supreme Court will not allow Indian shows to be aired on Pakistani TV channels. The court has stated that the shows damage the country's culture.&nbsp;

Nisar's remarks came after a three-member apex court bench heard an appeal filed by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) against the High Court's decision to ban the broadcast of Indian content on TV channels in the country, reported Dawn.&nbsp;

The Pemra had imposed a blanket ban on all Indian content in October 2016 after relations between the two countries soured following a terrorist attack on Indian military base camp in Uri, Jammu, and Kashmir. &nbsp;Around the same time, India too put a ban on Pakistani shows that were aired on Zee's Zindagi channel and MNS put a ban on Pakistani actors working in Bollywood.&nbsp;

However, in July 2017, the Lahore high court had lifted the ban, terming it null and void. In October 2018, the Supreme Court of Pakistan restored the ban setting aside the Lahore HC order.&nbsp;

Pemra counselor Zafar Iqbal Kalanauri told the Supreme Court that foreign content was banned on court orders before a High Court issued a stay. 
However the chairman of Pemra, Saleem Baig said that 65 percent of the content shown on a channel called Filmazia was foreign and that the number at times goes up to 80 percent. At this, the Chief Justice remarked: "We will not allow Indian content to be aired on (Pakistani) channels."

When he was told 'Filmazia was not a news channel but was an entertainment channel and that it did not do any propaganda", the Chief Justice countered the Pemra counsel and said, "It is, however, damaging our culture."

The court, however, is yet to announce its judgment as the counsel of Pakistan Broadcast Association was not present at the court on Wednesday. The hearing will now take place in February first week.

A two-member bench headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar expressed anger over the placement of the suspects' names on the ECL and summoned "the minister responsible" for the move to court.

Justice Nisar summoned State Minister for Interior Shehryar Afridi in the court and asked why the cabinet discussed the JIT report when it was still sub-judice. 
The court was hearing a suo motu case on a delay in a 2015 probe into fake bank accounts allegedly used to launder billions of rupees.

Several bigwigs, including Zardari, his sister Faryal Talpur, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and several other top politicians, businessmen and bureaucrats are in the list.

"Review this decision, take it back before the cabinet,"&nbsp;the chief justice said.

He also directed the minister to submit the names of those on ECL in the court and adjourned hearing until January 7.&nbsp;

The chief justice expressed displeasure over name of Sindh chief minister in no-fly list and asked the attorney general how the government banned the chief minister of second biggest province from leaving the country.

Speaking to the attorney general, Justice Nisar said: "You placed the name of the chief minister of the second largest province on the ECL. Tomorrow, you will place the name of National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) chairman on the ECL and tell him to continue working."

"Maybe we should place four ministers' names on the ECL so that there is a balance," the chief justice suggested.

The court expressed anger at the discussion on the JIT report in media when the court has yet to give its ruling over the report.

The bench also asked Zardari's defence counsel, Farook H Naek, to continue representing his client though his name was in JIT report.

Naek had requested the court to allow him to recuse from the case.

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Thursday ordered Prime Minister Imran Khan's sister Aleema Khanum to pay a hefty Rs 2,940 crores in taxes and fine within a week in the foreign assets case.

A three-judge bench, while hearing a case against 44 politically exposed individuals who possess properties in the UAE, remarked that failure on Khanum's part to honour the court orders will result in confiscation of her properties.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) told the court that a fine and tax worth Rs 2,940 crores has been imposed on Khanum, who has been identified as ostensible owner (benamidar) of a property.

Khanum, who was present with her lawyer in the court, said that she had bought the property in 2008 against US $370,000 and that she had sold it in 2017 .

The FBR in previous hearings submitted properties and tax details of Khanum.

Khanum told the court that she had raised 50 per cent of the amount required by taking a loan.

According to Khanum's written testimony submitted to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), she owned properties in East UAE. The properties were created through the earnings of businesses owned abroad.

"I sold my properties and the FBR was notified about this development in advance," Khanum said in her written testimony.

During the hearing, the FIA submitted a summary regarding foreign properties in court.

According to the summary, 96 more Pakistanis have been identified for having properties abroad. The total number of Pakistanis with properties abroad is now 2,154.

Out of these, 1,208 people own properties in the UAE.

Taking suo motu notice of the matter, the apex court had observed that it appeared the money siphoned off abroad without payment of taxes through illegal channels represented either ill-gotten gains or kickbacks from public contracts.

"Such money creates gross disproportion, inequality and disparity in society, which warps economic activity and growth, and constitutes plunder and theft of national wealth," it had said.

In an earlier order, the court had also observed that it was common knowledge for years that a large number of Pakistani citizens were maintaining their bank accounts in other countries without disclosing these to the authorities competent under the laws of Pakistan or paying taxes on the same in accordance with the law.&nbsp;

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar and comprising Justices Ijazul Ahsan and Faisal Arbab was dismayed at the report submitted by the water commission in the mineral water suo motu case, the Express Tribune reported.

Citing the report, the paper said some companies lacked qualified and trained staff for water testing while some of the bottling and beverages plants did not have relevant environmental approval.

The report found two companies to be using water from Indus river and canals while the concentration of minerals mentioned on the water bottle was inaccurate.

"After reviewing the commission's report, I want to shut down the mineral water companies," the chief justice said. "The companies who have been stealing water will have to pay compensation."

Chief Justice Nisar said if the mineral water companies did not improve their system, the apex court will have no choice but to shut them down.

"Nobody will die of thirst if mineral water companies are shut," he said.

"The commission report states that the companies lack water testing system," Justice Ahsan noted.

Asiya was convicted and sentenced to death in 2010 for allegedly insulting Islam during an argument with three Muslim women.

The Pakistan government, however, decided to take action against miscreants involved in vandalism, torture and arson during the demonstrations, leading to a crackdown on rioters across the country.

On Monday, around 1,800 people were arrested by law enforcement agencies. Pakistan's Interior Ministry had said that the demonstrators were booked under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).

Khan had sought the court's attention towards the large-scale encroachment, unchecked and unplanned construction in Bani Gala, massive denuding due to massive tree felling and pollution of the Rawal Lake due to sewage.

During the hearing, the full bench headed by Justice Nisar said Prime Minister Khan should be the first person to take steps towards regularisation of his property in order for others to follow his example, the Express Tribune reported.

The premier's counsel, Babar Awan, replied they will cooperate with the CDA to resolve this issue.

Justice Nisar asked how they were planning to cooperate and what documents are they planning to take to the development authority.

A report by Survey of Pakistan regarding encroachment in Bani Gala was submitted during the hearing on Monday, to which Justice Nisar remarked that whoever illegally constructed buildings in the area will be subject to a fine.

The apex court on October 1 observed that it is the job of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led (PTI) government of Khan to regularise all properties located in the Bani Gala area, including his private residence.
