‘American Factory’ is a thought-provoking documentary about a culture clash at a manufacturing plant in Ohio.

Announcing the same, Barack posted on Instagram and wrote, "Oscar nominations came out today and I'm glad to see 'American Factory's' nod for Best Documentary. I like this film for its nuanced, honest portrayal of the way a changing global economy plays out in real lives. It offers a window into people as they actually are and it's the kind of story we don't see often enough. This is exactly what Michelle and I hope to achieve through Higher Ground."

Filmmakers Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts are hoping the Oscar nomination for their documentary "For Sama" will remind people of the plight of Syrians affected by the country's nearly nine-year-old civil war.

"For Sama" was nominated in the best documentary field on Monday after getting four British BAFTA nods and a prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

"About three years ago I was in that place where I didn't know if I would be alive or not and now I'm under all the light, just trying to tell the story," al-Kateab told Reuters in London on Tuesday.

"I hope this is a big opportunity to shine a brighter light on the things that sadly continue to happen in Idlib and I also hope that the people of Syria will receive some hope from the success of 'For Sama'," she said.

The film is al-Kateab's love letter to her daughter Sama. Narrated by al-Kateab, it was crafted out of more than 500 hours of footage she filmed over five years, starting as an 18-year-old student in Aleppo witnessing the start of the uprising.

The documentary chronicles events in al-Kateab's personal life - falling in love with her friend, doctor Hamza, their wedding, and the birth of Sama - while the conflict rages around them.

She started filming on a mobile phone and gradually moved onto more professional equipment, while occasionally reporting for British television from Aleppo.

The film includes life at her husband's hospital - the only one left in the city - and families such as hers who chose to stay in the besieged city.

Al-Kateab, then pregnant with her second daughter, Taima, and her family were eventually forced to leave Syria for Turkey and later London, where she joined forces with Watts to turn the hundreds of hours of video into a film.

The first edit was too hard-hitting, the filmmakers said, and needed toning down.

"It was a big responsibility to tell the world that this is still happening and we can't let that happen again and again and again. Unfortunately, as we're speaking now, this is still happening," al-Kateab said.

The Academy Awards will be handed out on Feb. 9 in Hollywood. If al-Kateab has her way, now 4-year-old Sama will be there with her to share her story.

"She's very tall now, she speaks a lot. She is normal like any other child... I hope she will be with me in the trip to Hollywood," she said

This is why we think Sam Mendes' '1917' is front runner for Oscars Best Film

"Some men just want the fight,” a Captain in the British army tells Lance Corporal Schofield (George MacKay) halfway into this week’s big release ‘1917’. It’s a line that well establishes the futility of war, which serves as the looming backdrop of Sam Mendes’ latest film.&nbsp;

Based on a brief anecdote that Mendes heard from his grandfather, the war-drama is haunting, heartbreaking yet the most compelling piece of cinema that one has seen in recent times. It makes you weep silently, it makes you take in the visual extravaganza that cinematographer Roger Deakins provides and makes you root for two uncanny heroes who are on a mission that seems impossible due to the times they are in.&nbsp;

At the onset, the story seems basic. Its April 1917, three years into the first world war, Lance Corporal Blake(Dean Charles Chapman) and his friend Schofield are assigned by their commanding officer (Colin Firth) to deliver a cautionary message to another battalion of the British army to retract its 1600 strong army from a attacking the enemy- the Germans- as it is a trap that will lead to absolute catastrophe. Blake is chosen to deliver the message as his elder brother is a part of that battalion. Schofield is chosen by Blake as they are friends.&nbsp;

While the task at hand seems easy but the two young soldiers have to cross German-occupied French towns, save themselves from being ambushed by the enemy and put themselves to test both physically and emotionally- just to deliver the message before dawn breaks because that's when the battalion is set to attack.&nbsp;

War films never make for an easy watch. After a point, the mayhem that's spilling out on screen can seem a bit too much to take in. But Mendes, who serves as the screenplay writer along with Krysty Wilson-Cairns &nbsp;(they’ve been nominated in the best screenplay category at the Oscars) narrates a story that is engaging, heartbreaking and gives you goosebumps all at the same time. There are so many moments in the film that stay with you- the one where the two show compassion to a German soldier in the middle of their mission, or when Schofield explains why he hates going back home and doesn’t look forward to it, or when Captain Smith casually cautions the young soldiers that how war serves as an obsession to some men.&nbsp;

Calling his casting distracting, Fox said that inclusion of actor Nabhaan Rizwaan as a Sikh soldier was not appropriate to the film's surrounding. The actor said 'forcing diversity on people' is 'institutionally racist'.&nbsp;

Oscars 2020: Elton John, Cynthia Erivo, Billie Eilish to perform on the awards night

If there's one film that I would personally recommend that you must watch this Oscar season, then it would be a film called 'Honeyland'.

Mainly because almost nobody else is going to suggest it to you! It's a documentary set in North Macedonia. (Documentary? no... and where in God's name is North Macedonia??)

But I have my reasons.

First, in our extremely low-attention span times, you would be glad to know that the film is only 85 minutes long. One way or the other you won't regret it much.&nbsp;

Next, it's about honey. Hard to find people who hate it. If you do, please stop reading right now.

And last but definitely not the least, it's the first time in history that a film is nominated for a Best Documentary Feature Award, as well as, the Best International Feature Award.

'Honeyland' is a film that breaks barriers in terms of what even constitutes a movie. In technical terms, it is nominated in both the non-fiction and fiction categories of the awards.

In simple terms, a documentary is being nominated for a Best Film Award too. Now that's a rarity for any awards ceremony, leave alone the Oscars.

Flashback.

In 2004, Michael Moore’s documentary film "Fahrenheit 9/11" beat 18 other movies to win the coveted Palme d'Or - the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

And that was only the second documentary in history to do so at Cannes. The first one being 'The Silent World'. Co-directed by Jacques Cousteau and Louis Malle, it won the Palme d'Or in 1956.

Moore's documentary was a no-show at the Oscars though.

Not even slightly because it wasn't good enough, but because Moore decided to go in for a pay-per-view televising of the film. So that shut the film out from even the Best Documentary nomination.

Cut to now.

So all that means, you would be watching something very unique - brag alert here - its title might sound simple and straightforward. But that's only a decoy, even the story behind the making of it is fascinating.&nbsp;

Picture this:

A couple of Russian Documentary filmmakers, shooting in the remote countryside of North Macedonia. The plan is to shoot a short environmental documentary about a river. They don't know the local language which is not even the national language of this newly formed country that declared its independence in 1991.

And accidentally they discover beehives and the woman who tends to them. They didn’t speak Turkish -&nbsp;the preferred language of the film’s main subjects.

They would sleep in tents in the Protagonist's backyard for 3-4 days together. And that went on for over 3 years which means hundreds of hours of footage.

The filmmakers then spent nearly 4 months watching what they have shot after which they crunched into less than an hour and a half.

The visuals should tell you the story all by themselves. Honeyland started off with a bang at the awards circuit, winning at the Sundance Film Festival. And the rest as they all always say is history.

Following Golden Globes, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is all set to adopt a greener menu this year.&nbsp; 
 
According to media reports, Academy has announced that it will be offering entirely plant-based menus at Oscar Nominees Luncheon and then in the Dolby Theatre lobbies prior to the 92nd Academy Awards on February 9.&nbsp; 
 
For the post-ceremony Governors Ball, the menu will comprise 70 per cent plant-based, and 30 per cent vegetarian, fish and meat dishes and the food will be sustainably farmed and responsibly sourced. 
 
According to the statement of the organisation, "The Academy is an organisation of storytellers from around the world, and we owe our global membership a commitment to supporting the planet, for the past decade, the Academy has been committed to reducing its carbon footprint. For the past seven years, the Oscars show has had a zero-carbon imprint. We continue to expand our sustainability plan with the ultimate goal of becoming carbon neutral." 
 
Earlier this month, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association also served plant-based food at the Golden Globes.&nbsp; 
 
The menu was changed to king oyster mushroom "scallops" with wild mushroom risotto and vegetable from the original Chilean sea bass dish.&nbsp; 
 
A `vegan opera dome` by pastry chef Thomas Henzi by pastry chef Thomas Henzi was served as dessert. 
Interestingly 'Joker' star Joaquin Phoenix suggested to the Globes go vegan after which the WME announced that the menu at its pre-Oscar party will be plant-based.

For the unversed, the author of horror classics ‘Misery’ and ‘Pet Sematary’ Stephen King had said that he never considers diversity in matters of art and only quality. To quote him, he tweeted, “As a writer, I am allowed to nominate in just 3 categories: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Screenplay. For me, the diversity issue--as it applies to individual actors and directors, anyway--did not come up. That said, I would never consider diversity in matters of art. Only quality. It seems to me that to do otherwise would be wrong.”

He went on to say, “But that would be the case in a perfect world, one where the game isn’t rigged in favor of the white folks.”&nbsp;

He mentioned how ‘Little Women’ had no mention in the Oscars 2020 nominations list and said that the film’s snub blame could be placed on the demographics of the academy’s voting body, which is still predominantly white and male. He said, “Creative excellence comes from every walk, color, creed, gender and sexual orientation, and it’s made richer and bolder and more exciting by diversity, but it’s defined by being excellent. Judging anyone’s work by any other standard is insulting and — worse — it undermines those hard-won moments when excellence from a diverse source is rewarded (against, it seems, all the odds) by leaving such recognition vulnerable to being dismissed as politically correct.”

“We don’t live in that perfect world, and this year’s less-than-diverse Academy Awards nominations once more prove it. Maybe someday we will. I can dream, can’t I? After all, I make stuff up for a living,” he concluded in his argument.&nbsp;

World War One movie '1917' is nominated for ten Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director for Sam Mendes. So far this season, Mendes - who won an Oscar in 2000 for 'American Beauty' - has picked up prizes including a Golden Globe for Best Director - Motion Picture and Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film at the Directors Guild Awards.

Speaking at the DGAs Mendes said he's been 'thrilled' with the reaction to his movie: 'It's a big, ambitious film, it doesn't have big movie stars in the leads. And its war, it is a war that is over 100 years old. Inspired by Mendes' grandfather's experiences on the frontlines of World War One, Mendes co-wrote the piece with screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Wilson-Cairns, who is nominated along with Mendes for Best Original Screenplay, said working on the movie was a dream come true, and part of the research took her to the battlefields in France:

''I was always fascinated by the two world wars I was a weird nerdy kid …I went and read first-hand accounts … I went to France I walked the route the boys would talk in the film.''

Made to look as if it is one continuous shot, the drama, set during a single day in April 1917, aims to tell the story in real-time - which meant super-long and detailed takes for the cast.

''We didn't have the option to say well, that part of the takes really good if we did a cutaway here we could use it you know if one of our takes .. if one went down you know like even 20 seconds before the end the shot you had to go all the way back to the front and start again,' cinematographer Roger Deakins explained.

Oscar-winner Deakins, who is nominated for Best Cinematographer, said there were high fives on set when Mendes was happy with a take.

Before they got to set a lot of prep was needed in advance for cast and crew, Chapman and MacKay rehearsed every scene on location for months.

'Well it's unlike any other job that we have ever done before .. that it's extraordinary the amount of rehearsal time, we rehearsed for 6 months,' said MacKay, explaining having everyone together for months before shooting a drama film is something he has never experienced before.

Meanwhile when they were on set it proved a dirty experience. 'There were times like in no mans land for continuity we'd have to literally sit in the mud ..just to get the mud exact,' Chapman told Reuters.

The 92nd Academy Awards are due to take place in Los Angeles on February 9, 2020.
