The victory lifts United up to seventh and within three points of Chelsea in fourth, while fifth could now even be good enough to qualify for the Champions League next season pending Manchester City's appeal again a two-season ban from European competition.

Fernandes was unable to make much of an impact from open play in his second United appearance since a £47 million ($62 million) move from Sporting Lisbon.

However, the Portuguese international is a huge threat from set-pieces and nearly caught Caballero out with a free-kick that crashed back off the post.

Moments later, Fernandes provided his first assist for the Red Devils with a corner which Maguire powered home.

Lampard had seen enough from Batshuayi and handed Olivier Giroud a rare appearance off the bench for the final quarter.

The England striker was at his very best, strutting around the frontline and terrifying the Spurs defence but Solskjaer will also be delighted with a hugely improved performance from oft-criticised Brazilian midfielder Fred.

The opener was scored when Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez came off second best in a tussle with Jesse Lingard and the ball fell to Rashford, who confidently unleashed a low drive which rattled in off the post.

Rashford went close again with an 18th-minute free kick which curled past Paulo Gazzaniga’s right-hand post.

Cutting in from the left, Rashford jinked past Aurier, burst into the box and was tripped by Moussa Sissoko, earning a penalty which he took and, from a short run-up, slotted home.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains confident that goalkeeper David de Gea will commit his future to the club despite entering the final year of his contract.

United hoped the Spanish international would sign a new deal before the season began, but are still waiting for De Gea to put pen to paper.

As it stands, the 28-year-old would be free to speak to any European clubs from January 1 and leave next summer on a free transfer.

United have reportedly offered a deal worth around £290,000-a-week ($363,000) to make De Gea the joint highest earner still at the club, alongside Paul Pogba, but still short of the £400,000-a-week Alexis Sanchez was earning at Old Trafford prior to his loan move to Inter Milan.

"I've obviously not been involved in all the discussions, but I'm pretty confident we'll get this sorted," said the Norwegian.

"There is a big shift and difference between the teams,” said Solskjaer.

"Chelsea outran us quite a lot in April, three games ago, now we've outrun them, so that's a good shift for us.

"But it's not just about fitness, fitness is important but a young team you expect loads of energy but we also have quality."

Solskjaer also expects Brazilian midfielder Fred, signed for £52 million last summer, to have a greater impact with United this season despite an underwhelming first year in English football, particularly with the United defence reinforced by the presence of £80 million centre-back Harry Maguire.
