Initiated talks to bring change in country: KCR after meeting Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik

BJP president Amit Shah on Wednesday made light of the opposition '<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/opinion-stumbling-mahagathbandhan-158102">mahagathbandhan</a>' (grand alliance), calling it an illusion and expressed confidence that the BJP will retain power after the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Speaking at the Republic Summit here, Shah also said he was sure that the Shiv Sena will be with the BJP in the next Lok Sabha elections. Talks are on (with them), he added.

"The reality of the opposition 'mahagathbandhan' is different. It (the opposition alliance) doesn't exist and is a 'bhranti' (illusion)," Shah said.
"The mahagathbandhan does not exist anywhere. We have fought against all of them in 2014 and defeated them to form the government. They are all regional leaders, they can't help each other," the BJP president said.

Shah said the BJP will gain in West Bengal, North-East and Odisha in 2019.

"The issues of elections are: in five years how have we ensured national security and defeated corruption. We have provided toilets in eight crore homes and electricity in 2.5 crore homes," Shah said.

"Not only for the BJP, but it is also necessary for the country that a strong govt comes to power," the BJP president said.

The election results in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh were definitely not favourable for BJP, but it is not right to link them with the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, he said.

State polls can't be linked to Lok Sabha poll results as both elections are fought on separate issues, Shah said.

"It is our duty to work for the people and convince them, but if the mandate is against us we accept that too," he said. "I am not against analysis, but the elections are fought on different issues. The issues on the ground are different," he added.

"In 2014, BJP had government in six states, now we have it in 16 states. So tell me who will win the 2019 elections," the BJP president said.

"We accept the people's mandate (in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh). We will introspect on the poll results," he said.

The BJP chief said it does not matter who is pitted against Narendra Modi in the 2019 polls (as prime ministerial aspirant). "We are going ahead on the basis of our strengh and not on the basis of someone's weakness," he added.

Opposition 'mahagathbandhan' an illusion; BJP will win in 2019: Amit Shah

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday said a total of 5602 farmers have been affected, 37 houses damaged so far due to the cyclonic storm 'Phethai.'

Addressing the media here, Naidu said, "17 Mandals are affected in East Godavari district, in which 5602 farmers are affected, 37 houses are damaged, 28 partially damaged, and 2179 hectares of paddy fields and 30 hectares of horticulture have been damaged."

However, Naidu said electricity supply has been restored in 14 mandals, while 187 rehabilitation camps have been set up.

"32,000 people have been provided food. Mobile connectivity has been restored. East Godavari and Krishna administration brought the situation under control within hours," he added.

Talking about the preparedness of the state administration, Naidu said hourly bulletins were issued to create awareness, assisted by the Andhra Pradesh Weather Forecasting and Early Warning Research Centre (AWARE), with the help of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Elaborating upon the measures that the state took in order to minimise the damage of the cyclone, the chief minister asserted that the teams were prepared for any eventuality and mock drill too was held.

"On December 7, we identified it and, assessed that it will turn into a cyclone. However, Pethai played hide and seek, and its intensity weakened too. The mangrove forests in the region also reduced the effect. We had prepared teams to face any eventuality and also conducted mock drills," said Naidu.

Lauding the efforts of the officials and workers who were involved in restoration and clearance work the chief minister added, "Our collectors and district level departments worked very hard and efficiently. At Kakinada, they worked within minutes and within half an hour of landfall, everything was cleared. We managed power failures, used generators within minutes of power failure. We established multipurpose cyclone shelters. Midday meal system was used for providing food to the victims."

Naidu, who conducted an aerial survey of the areas affected by the cyclone in East Godavari district earlier today, also informed that as many as 51 IAS officers have worked in the rescue-restoration operations.

As per Naidu, a cyclone plays on the psyche of people and in order to counter that, a lot of manpower was provided including the deployment of National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, and other such agencies.

"During Hudhud cyclone, we had prepared a blue book, it was used during Titli cyclone. The blue book of Titli was fully used this time," he said.Cyclone Phethai hit Katrenikona town of Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district on December 17.

Odisha evacuates 11,600 people as Cyclone Phethai makes landfall in Andhra Pradesh

The Centre has assured that it would release the assistance for damage inflicted by cyclone 'Titli' and subsequent flood and landslides in 17 districts of the state, chief minister Naveen Patnaik said Saturday.

The assurance was given by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh when Patnaik spoke to him over the phone Saturday.

"The Union Home Minister has assured Chief Minister to release the assistance immediately," a release issued by the Chief Minister's Office said.

On December 13, Patnaik, in a letter to Singh, had demanded the immediate release of central assistance for the devastation caused by the cyclone to Odisha.

Patnaik said "Titli", which lashed Odisha in October 2018 and caused the subsequent flood and landslides, had severely affected a vast population of about 60.31 lakh in 128 blocks spread over 17 districts.

The state government had earlier submitted a memorandum to the Centre seeking the assistance of Rs 2,023.13 crore against total requirement of Rs 2,779.32 crore for relief and restoration work.

Patnaik had also written a letter to the prime minister on October 18 requesting for release of an interim assistance of Rs 1,000 crore pending the final decision of the High-Level Committee headed by Rajnath Singh on the memorandum which was initially submitted by the state government in October.

Meanwhile, the inter-ministerial central team has already made an on-the-spot assessment of the damage during the first week of November 2018.

The state urgently required assistance from National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) as an amount of Rs 1,689.13 crore was released for relief and restoration work exhausting the entire amount available in State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).&nbsp;

'Titli' cyclone assistance to Odisha soon: Naveen Patnaik

India's chief coach Harendra Singh Thursday blamed poor umpiring for his <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/hockey-world-cup-2018-india-crash-out-after-losing-to-netherlands-in-quarter-final-183831">team's early ouster</a> from the ongoing men's hockey World Cup.&nbsp;

He said the International Hockey Federation (FIH) needs to seriously address the issue as his side has been on the receiving end of poor on-field decisions twice this year.&nbsp;

Aiming to rewrite history after a hiatus of 43 years, India lost 1-2 to the Netherlands in the fourth and last quarterfinal, crashing out in front of a packed Kalinga Stadium.&nbsp;

Harendra said it's high time the FIH reviews the performance of umpires.&nbsp;

"I would like to tender my apologies. We haven't given what we had to. I am not going to stop today. If they (umpires) don't want to improve, we will continue to face these type of results," he said at the post-match press conference.&nbsp;

"Can anyone define Amit Rohidas's 10-min yellow card? What about this gentleman (pointing at Manpreet Singh), when he was pushed from behind? Why not a yellow card there? We have lost two major tournaments (Asian Games) this year because of umpiring.&nbsp;

"Two times we got a card when we hadn't done anything. But when it happened against us, they (umpires) said nothing. They need to improve. We have lost two major tournaments," he added.&nbsp;

The India coach, however, said he will not lodge any protest and accept the result.&nbsp;

"99.8 percent the referral goes in favour of players. The outcome of a protest has never been good in my career. We accept this gracefully. We want neutral umpiring. I except both teams to be treated equally. One wrong decision can ruin your preparation of 4-6 years," he said.&nbsp;

India captain Manpreet Singh too was utterly disappointed with the outcome and said there is no point in lodging a protest now.&nbsp;

"What is the use? We lost. We are out of the tournament," he said.&nbsp;

"The team had put in all the effort, but it didn't happen. I am happy that all boys gave their 100 per cent and were not short on confidence."
Harendra said it was an equal contest but missed chances hurt India badly.&nbsp;

"We had a couple of open chances. We missed, so did Holland. That was because both teams were playing high-tempo game. Sometimes your position is not there, or your stick is not there (in the right place). The way the boys fought without the goalkeeper, in front of you I want to salute my players."&nbsp;

"We played well in patches but I will give 7 out of 10 on temperament to my team."&nbsp;

Criticising the on-field umpires, Harendra further said he didn't think the penalty corner from which Netherlands scored their winner, was right.&nbsp;

"The penalty corner which they got, I don't agree with it," he said.
Netherlands coach Max Caldas, however, disagreed with his Indian counterpart and said it is not wise to blame the umpires after a defeat.&nbsp;

"The team with most chances wins the game. We won the game. That's the bottom line. In the end, the umpires didn't play the game. We never discuss umpires after a game, we talk about our own performance," he said.&nbsp;

"We review games, not umpires. We review our own performance. It happened with us at the Champions Trophy when the call went against us and we had a draw against India. Umpires do their job. It's a very fast-paced game," Caldas added.&nbsp;

The Dutch captain Billy Bakker too agreed with his coach on the umpiring issue.&nbsp;

"I think we are pretty happy with the officials. In the end, India were asking for a penalty corner. It doesn't matter if they had the referral.&nbsp;

Sometimes in sports things don't go like you want. Something you have to deal with it," he said.&nbsp;

India's chief coach Harendra Singh Thursday blamed poor umpiring for his team's early ouster from the ongoing men's hockey World Cup. He said the International Hockey Federation (FIH) needs to seriously address the issue as his side has been on the receiving end of poor on-field decisions twice this year.

Aiming to rewrite history after a hiatus of 43 years, India lost 1-2 to the Netherlands in the fourth and last quarterfinal, crashing out in front of a packed Kalinga Stadium. Harendra said it's high time the FIH reviews the performance of umpires. "I would like to tender my apologies. We haven't given what we had to. I am not going to stop today. If they (umpires) don't want to improve, we will continue to face these type of results," he said at the post-match press conference. "Can anyone define Amit Rohidas's 10-min yellow card? What about this gentleman (pointing at Manpreet Singh), when he was pushed from behind? Why not a yellow card there? We have lost two major tournaments (Asian Games) this year because of umpiring. "Two times we got a card when we hadn't done anything. But when it happened against us, they (umpires) said nothing. They need to improve. We have lost two major tournaments," he added. The India coach, however, said he will not lodge any protest and accept the result. "99.8 percent the referral goes in favour of players. The outcome of a protest has never been good in my career. Hockey World Cup: Belgium defeat Germany, to face England in semis

France eked out a narrow 1-0 win over debutants China in the second cross-over match to advance to the quarterfinals of the men's hockey World Cup here on Monday.&nbsp;

The lone goal of the match came in the 36th minute from the stick of Timothee Clement.

France might be the lowest ranked team in the tournament at 20, but they had already shown the world that rankings hardly have any significance by stunning Olympic champions Argentina 5-3 in the pool stages.

France will face two-time defending champions and world number 1 Australia in the second quarterfinal on Wednesday.

The Frenchmen started on a bright note against world number 17 China and took the early initiative by earning four back-to-back penalty corners as early as in the second minute but wasted all the opportunities.

China made a subdued start to the game and allowed France to dominate the possession, relying mostly on their counter-attacking ability to stun their opponents.

In the 19th minute, a selfish play from Charles Masson denied France a great opportunity. After cutting inside the box from the right flank, Masson, instead of passing the ball to his teammate, went for glory and hit straight at the body of Chinese goalie Caiyu Wang from a tight angle.

China came close to scoring in the 21st minute but E Wenhui missed from close range after Ao Suozhu controlled a long ball over the French defence and made his way into the circle showcasing 3D skills.

Two minutes from half-time, France were unlucky as Etienne Tynevez's deflection from a Jean-Baptiste Forgues pass hit the crossbar.

In the never next move, the Chinese goalkeeper once again came to his side's rescue by keeping out Blaise Rogeau's reverse hit from the top of the box as the Frenchmen failed to break the 'Great Wall of China' in the opening two quarters.

China came out with more purpose after halftime and came tantalisingly close to breaking the deadlock in the 33rd minute but a sliding E Wenhui's deflection from Zixiang Guo pass was parried away by an alert France goalie Arthur Thieffry.

France finally broke the resolute Chinese defence in the 36th minute through Clement.

The move was started by Viktor Lockwood, who got to the baseline with a blazing run down the left flank and cut back to Maximilien Branicki in the centre.

Branicki unleashed a fierce reverse stick at the far post which was deflected by Clement into the net.

A minute later, China secured their first penalty corner of the match but failed to capitalise on it.

The third quarter witnessed three penalty corners -- one to France and two to China.

In a desperate need for a goal to take the match into a shoot-out, China pressed hard and earned two penalty corners in succession minutes away from full time but the French goalkeeper Thieffry was upto to the task on both occasions to keep a clean slate and ensure a last eight berth for his side.&nbsp;

Teacher said my jokes are more dangerous: Abhijit Iyer-Mitra after getting bail

Team India would look to seal a direct quarter-final berth with a win against Canada in their final Pool C match of the men's hockey World Cup on Saturday.&nbsp;

World number 5 India are currently leading Pool C with four points from two games ahead of Olympic silver medallist Belgium&nbsp;on account of a better goal difference.

India thrashed South Africa 5-0 and drew 2-2 against Belgium in their earlier matches, while Canada lost 1-2 against the Red Lions before eking out a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Africans.

While India are placed at an advantageous position at present, the pool is still wide open. The hosts would not want to leave anything on chance and they would seek a comprehensive win on Saturday to cement their place atop the pool and directly qualify for the last eight round.

The second and third-placed teams from the pool will play cross-over matches against number 2 and 3 teams of other pools to decide the remaining last four quarterfinal places.

Going by records and form, India are hands down favourites to come out victorious against Canada.

But as we have witnessed on Thursday with world number 20 France upsetting Olympic champions Argentina in a Pool A encounter, anything can happen in modern world hockey.

Besides the better rankings, India enjoy a superior head-to-head record against Canada. Since 2013, India and Canada have played five matches against India with the hosts having won three, lost one and drawn one.

But it would be easier said than done as the Canadians have improved tremendously over the years, especially their defence, which was visible in their first game against Belgium.

The onus would be on India's lethal forward line comprising Mandeep Singh, Simranjeet Singh, Akashdeep Singh and Lalit Upadhyay to take responsibility.

The Indian midfield, led by skipper Manpreet Singh, has so far produced a decent show, while the defence need to be more agile and cautious, especially considering the fact that the backline is infamous for crumbling under pressure towards the end.

Conceding late goals has been India's perennial problem and it once again came to hurt the hosts when their defence, consisting of Birendra Lakra, Surender Kumar, Harmanpreet Singh, broke down under pressure to concede a goal four minutes from the final hooter and gift Belgium a draw in their last match.

Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh too does not look the same under the bar after returning to the side following an injury lay-off.

Canada have given India problems in the past, the most recent being in last year's Hockey World League semi-finals in London where they defeated India 3-2 to finish fifth.

If that was not enough, in the 2016 Rio Olympics too, India were held to a 2-2 draw by the Canadians.

But India's chief coach Harendra Singh was not in a mood to dwell in the past and said those experiences will only act as a catalyst to do better on Saturday.

"Past failures are experiences. These experiences we will try to make use the present. The present is the match against Canada. The match will decide the fate of our pool. I am not thinking about what happened in Hockey World League Semi-Final or Rio Olympics," Harendra said.

While insisting that Canada will rely on counter-attacks, the coach said India can't divert from its strength - that is attacking hockey.

"They will not give space. They wait, wait and wait to get opportunities and that will be their plan. But we have to play to our strength," Harendra said.

"You can't go and defend. You can't be on the backfoot. We have to play attacking hockey. The players have adopted attacking hockey when they were teenagers. It's in our culture. You can make minor adjustments, but not change the mindset," he added.

In the first match of Pool C on Saturday, Belgium will take on South Africa.

Belgium defeated Canada 2-1 in the first match of <a href="http://www.wionews.com/hockey-world-cup">Men's Hockey World Cup 2018</a> on Wednesday.

The Olympic silver medallist Belgium's created the pressure in the first quarter itself through a fine field strike by Felix Denayer in the third minute of the game.

In the second quarter, they did not only saved a penalty corner but also scored again, extending the lead to 2-0.

In the 12th minute, captain Thomas Briels found the back of the net again for Belgium but the goal was disallowed after Canada went for the referral, claiming the ball hit his hand before rolling on to the goal.&nbsp;

Belgium cruise past Canada 2-1 in hockey World Cup opener

Not amongst the favourites to lift the trophy, South Africa players have paid from their own pockets to just be a part of the men's <a href="http://www.wionews.com/hockey-world-cup">hockey World Cup</a> beginning here on Wednesday.&nbsp;

World number 15 South Africa coach Mark Hopkins said the biggest hurdle for the growth of the game in South Africa is "funding".&nbsp;

"We are coming into the World Cup with players needing to pay from their own pocket. They paid to be part of the camps. Our challenge is to get the funding in place. We are lucky to have a few sponsors but the sponsorships we have don't really cover the budget of the World Cup.&nbsp;

Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha is all geared up for the grand opening ceremony of Hockey World Cup 2018. The opening ceremony will carry a central message of "oneness".

With glitz and glamour, Hockey World Cup 2018 begins

Senior party leader and Union minister Jual Oram Tuesday said Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will be the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate in Odisha.

He was speaking to reporters here after former Odisha-cadre IAS officer Aparajita Sarangi joined the saffron party in the presence of party president Amit Shah in Delhi Tuesday.&nbsp;

The announcement came amid rumours in the political circle that the BJP would project Sarangi as its chief ministerial candidate for the state assembly elections next year.

“Dharmendra Pradhan will be the chief ministerial candidate of the BJP in Odisha. We will fight the forthcoming Assembly and Lok Sabha elections under his leadership. Our aim is to unseat Naveen Patnaik from power and put an end to the rule of the non-Odia bureaucrats in the state,” Oram said.

Asked about Sarangi’s joining the BJP, the Union tribal affairs minister said she has joined the party as a primary member.&nbsp;

On speculations of the resignation of two senior party leaders – Rourkela MLA Dilip Ray and party’s national executive member Bijay Mohapatra – from the BJP, Oram said it will be a “major loss” for the party if they quit.&nbsp;

However, the BJP will try its best to compensate the loss if it happens, he added. Ray had recently hinted at his resignation from the party as he alleged the central government had not taken steps for the development of Rourkela city.

“I do not think Ray will quit the party on the issue of development, rather due to political reasons,” Oram said.

With a large number of farmers marching to Bhubaneswar to stage a demonstration here Monday, the Odisha government stopped them Sunday midway at various places, triggering criticism from the opposition Congress and BJP.

The farmers, who are on 'padayatra' demanding "price, prestige and pension", were stopped by the police at various places to foil their protest, alleged Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS) convenor Akshya Kumar.

As the farmers marched to the state capital from Cuttack and Khurda, the administration clamped prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code at Hansapal and Tamando to stall the protest, said a leader of the NNKS, which is spearheading the agitation.

He alleged the farmers have been held up at various places like Keonjhar, Balugaon, Jatasinghpur and Jajpur since October 29.

Accusing the state government of trying to suppress the farmers' voice, Kumar and other NNKS leaders said the action is being taken also against the people for criticising the government.

Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police Anup Kumar Sahu said necessary arrangements have been made to prevent any untoward incident during farmers' demonstration in the state capital.

Around 25 platoons of police, each having around 30 personnel, have been deployed to prevent law and order problems, he said, adding special attention is being given to ensure smooth traffic movement, especially on the national highways near the capital city.

While senior Congress leader and former MP Pradip Majhi led a 'padyatra' from Khurda, NNKS convener Akshya Kumar and former Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda joined the peasants' march from Cuttack.

The state government has shown little concern for the farmers despite their repeated demands, Majhi said, adding if the government fails to fulfil their demands by tomorrow, the state capital will be put under seize.

The NNKS has been demanding minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 5,000 per quintal for paddy and a monthly pension of Rs 5,000 for the youths and Rs 1,500 for the elderly, said Kumar.

Panda slammed the state government for trying to "throttle" the voice of farmers.

Thousands of farmers from across the state are staging a peaceful agitation but the way the administration is trying to obstruct them is not justified, he said.

The BJP also hit out at the Odisha government for failing to address the grievances of the farmers in the state.

BJP state unit vice-president Samir Mohanty said his party supports the farmers' peaceful agitation.

The Union government has taken several measures to double the farmers' income in the country, but due to wrong policies of the Odisha government, the farmers have been deprived of the benefits of the Centre's various schemes, Mohanty claimed.

Dismissing the allegations, BJD spokesperson Sameer Dash claimed that the farmers across the country are facing problems.

Odisha government stops farmers marching to Bhubaneswar, draws flak

The BJP has alleged that the BJD government has neglected the farm sector forcing many farmers to commit suicide in Odisha.

The government is not supporting farmers by providing easy finance and for that reason they take loans from private money lenders at very high rate of interest, BJP state unit chief Basant Panda told reporters here Friday.

"Many farmers who faced crop failure were unable to repay loans and faced huge debt burden forcing them to commit suicide," the BJP leader said.

The government has also "failed" to make available inputs like nutrients, seeds and irrigation facilities to the farmers, he said adding that the farmers are also denied the Minimum Support Price (MSP) fixed by the Centre for their produces.

Showing a list of farmers who allegedly committed suicide, he urged the state government to grant compensation to the kin of the deceased peasants at the earliest.

He also demanded interest-free loan to farmers saying similar facility was being extended to the peasants in several BJP ruled states.

He also alleged that illegal practices were being adopted by the millers during paddy procurement and the state government remained a silent spectator.

"The state is actually being ruled by a coterie on the third floor (chief ministers office in the secretariat) and the millers are influencing officials to exploit the farmers," the BJP leader alleged.

Panda also alleged that the state government had declared drought in some pockets of nine districts without undertaking field visits.

Dismissing Panda's allegations, BJD leader Arun Sahoo said Odisha had bagged the national 'Krishi Karman Award' four times and the packages given to farmers in the state were much better than other states.&nbsp;

Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said that oil marketing companies (OMC) have taken a slew of measures to assist the people affected by cyclone Titli and the subsequent floods in Odisha.

The OMCs deployed all the resources at their command and ensured uninterrupted supply of petroleum products in the areas affected by floods, the Union Minister said in a letter to Odisha Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister S N Patro on Monday.

Pradhan said the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and public sector oil marketing companies had immediately taken stock of the damage due to the cyclone and the floods in Odisha. "I myself visited the flood-affected areas in Ganjam and Gajapati districts," he said.

Patro in a letter had urged the Union Petroleum minister to provide LPG cylinders free of cost to beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjawala Yojana (PMUY) in calamity-hit Gajapati, Ganjam and Rayagada districts.

"The OMCs will make arrangements for providing cylinders in lieu of lost cylinders during flood," Pradhan said.

For BPL families, the OMCs will charge a nominal Rs 200 per cylinder, while the manufacturing cost of Rs 1,200 will be charged per cylinder from APL families, he said.

The Union minister said that the OMCs will organise special camps for LPG customers for suppling documents on priority basis to people who have lost their documents.

Similar assistance had been provided by his ministry in collaboration with OMCs in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Jammu and Kashmir during floods in those states and the local people had widely appreciated these measures, he said.

Patro, in his letter to Pradhan, had stated that people in Gajapati, Ganjam and Rayagada were the "worst sufferers" and unable to pay the subsidised rate for the cylinders.

"I would request you to waive off the subsidised cost of the domestic LPG cylinders and supply the same free of cost, which will help in ameliorating the sufferings of the poor beneficiaries in the three districts," the letter read.

OMC measures to help cyclone-affected people in Odisha: Union Petroleum Minister

With diesel becoming costlier than petrol in Odisha, the ruling Biju Janata Dal and the opposition Congress Sunday blamed the "faulty" policy of the central government for the rise in the price of diesel.

A litre of diesel cost 12 paise more than that of petrol in Bhubaneswar on Sunday with diesel being sold at Rs 80.69 per litre while petrol cost 80.57 per litre.

Utkal Petroleum Dealers Association general secretary Sanjay Lath said that this was the first time that the price of diesel surpassed that of petrol in Odisha.

Lath said while other states have different VAT rates for petrol and diesel, Odisha charges a uniform 26 per cent VAT on both.

He claimed that there has been a decline in the sale of diesel in Odisha because of the high prices of the fuel.

Odisha Finance Minister S B Behera said, "This imbalance is mostly due to a faulty policy of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre ... There could be a tactical understanding between the central government and oil marketing companies."

Behera feared that the prices of essential commodities will also go up because of the increase in diesel price.

Senior Congress leader Arya Gyanendra said, "There is an inefficient government at the Centre which failed to regulate fuel price, particularly diesel ..."

BJP state general secretary Prithviraj Harichandan said, "Finance minister (Behera) should be judicious while making a statement on an important issue. Everybody in the country knows the reason behind the rise in the prices of fuel. While 13 states have reduced VAT on the fuel, Odisha government is yet taking a decision in this regard."

Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who is from Odisha, Sunday again asked the state government to reduce the rate of the VAT to give relief to people.

Odisha Byabasai Mahasangha secretary Sudhakar Panda too feared that the price of essential commodities in the state will go up due to the high rate of diesel.

There could be a tactical understanding between the central government and oil marketing companies." Behera feared that the prices of essential commodities will also go up because of the increase in diesel price. Senior Congress leader Arya Gyanendra said, "There is an inefficient government at the Centre which failed to regulate fuel price, particularly diesel ..." BJP state general secretary Prithviraj Harichandan said, "Finance minister (Behera) should be judicious while making a statement on an important issue. Everybody in the country knows the reason behind the rise in the prices of fuel. While 13 states have reduced VAT on the fuel, Odisha government is yet taking a decision in this regard." Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who is from Odisha, Sunday again asked the state government to reduce the rate of the VAT to give relief to people. Odisha Byabasai Mahasangha secretary Sudhakar Panda too feared that the price of essential commodities in the state will go up due to the high rate of diesel.

Odisha to pay up to Rs 1.02 lakh for cyclone-damaged houses

The death toll in Cyclone Titli and subsequent floods has mounted to 57, including 10 children, while loss suffered due to the calamity has been pegged at over Rs 2,200 crore, the Odisha government said Wednesday.

The government, earlier in the day, had confirmed 52 deaths due to the calamity that ravaged many parts of the state, mainly the southern region, last week.

Ten people were missing following landslides in Gajapati district and a clearer picture would emerge once information about them is obtained, Chief Secretary A P Padhi said here, after a review meeting with officials.

The state government has information of about 57 deaths from various affected areas so far, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) B P Sethi said.

He added the casualties mainly resulted from incidents like landslides, wall collapses and drowning.

While 39 deaths were reported from "worst-affected Gajapati district", 12 casualties were reported from Ganjam district and two from Kandhamal district, Sethi said.

Four persons -- one each from Cuttack, Angul, Keonjhar and Nayagarh districts -- were killed during the disaster, he said.

The dead included 10 children and 19 women, said an official.

"As per preliminary assessment, the loss suffered in different sectors, including infrastructure and agriculture, was estimated at around Rs 2,200 crore. It will take a day or two to get a full report on the total loss incurred due to the disaster," Sethi said.

Noting that restoration and relief work was in progress across the state, the chief secretary said, "95 per cent of the damaged roads have been repaired."

"Almost all thoroughfares have been repaired and power and drinking water supply restored in the urban areas. In rural areas, work is still in progress to bring back normalcy," Padhi added.

He said medical teams were visiting the affected areas and no major health issue has cropped anywhere until now.

The relief material has reached all panchayat areas for distribution among the affected people, Padhi added.

A senior government official said restoration and relief operations were being carried out by using the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

The state will approach the Centre for necessary assistance after "exact assessment" of the damages, he said.
