US & South Korea perform military drills near demilitarised zone

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has accused the U.S. of forming a NATO-like military bloc in the region, warning of dire consequences. He vowed to expand and modernize North Korea’s nuclear arsenal in response to growing alliances between the U.S., South Korea, and Japan.

Kim Jong Un warns US over military bloc plans in Asia

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un criticised trilateral military cooperation among the United States, Japan and South Korea for raising tensions in the region and vowed countermeasures, including the further development of nuclear forces.
Kim said US deployments of nuclear strategic assets, war exercises, and military cooperation with Japan and South Korea were inviting a military imbalance in the region and raising a grave challenge to the security environment, state media KCNA reported on Sunday.

"The DPRK does not want unnecessary tension of the regional situation but will take sustained countermeasures to ensure the regional military balance," Kim said during a visit to the defence ministry on Saturday to commemorate the founding day of its Army.
DPRK stands for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, North Korea's official name.
US President Donald Trump, after a meeting on Friday with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, said he would have relations with North Korea, as they expressed concern over its nuclear program.
But during the visit, Kim "clarified once again the unshakable policy of more highly developing the nuclear forces," according to the report.

On Russia's war with Ukraine, Kim said: "The army and people of the DPRK will invariably support and encourage the just cause of the Russian army and people to defend their sovereignty, security and territorial integrity in keeping with the spirit of the treaty on the comprehensive strategic partnership between the DPRK and Russia."
Last month, South Korea said it suspected North Korea of preparing to send more troops to Russia, in addition to about 11,000 soldiers who had been dispatched for the three-year-long war.
In a separate commentary released later on Sunday, North Korea's KCNA again criticised South Korea's military activity with the United States this year and warned that aggressive actions would be met by undesired consequences.
"Anyone could easily guess how we would take the fact that they carried out war exercises that were more intense than ever before at a time when diplomacy schedules were being cancelled due to political turmoil," KCNA said.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un criticises US-Japan-South Korea cooperation, vows countermeasures

North Korea has released a revised map that omits South Korea's territory, instead using a term that signifies a significant policy shift: viewing the South as a distinct and adversarial nation, Eurasia Review reported.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledged last year to amend the constitution to declare South Korea the &ldquo;primary and immutable enemy,&rdquo; abandoning the established notion of the South being a partner in reconciliation and reunification. Kim added that he no longer saw South Koreans as the same ethnic people. The new map&nbsp;further reinforces the North Korean leader&rsquo;s break from the long-held goal of unification.
However, due to a lack of any official report or announcement in this respect, it remains unclear whether North Korea has formally amended its constitution.

A recently surfaced map from North Korea suggests a significant shift in the country's stance towards South Korea. The map, dated April 2024, refers to South Korea as 'Hanguk', implying recognition of it as a separate nation.&nbsp;
This marks a departure from North Korea's previous terminology, 'Namjoson', which implied South Korea was part of a unified Korea. The change comes after Kim Jong-un's announcement in 2023, indicating a potential shift in North Korea's reunification policy.&nbsp;

As per reports, an image purportedly showing the new map was posted on the social media app RedNote (Xiaohongshu). The reports further add that the map was sourced from a North Korean map publisher.
The new map also leaves South Korean territory blank, in contrast to the 2012 and 2018 editions, which included details of administrative divisions for the South.
Previous versions of the map included notable geographical details about South Korea, such as its southernmost and easternmost points, as well as the dimensions of the Korean Peninsula. However, these details have been completely removed from the latest version of the map.

<h2>Rubio calls North Korea and Iran 'rogue states'</h2>
Recently, Rubio in a radio interview called North Korea and Iran "rogue states you have to deal with" when making foreign policy decisions.
The foreign ministry spokesman rejected Rubio's "nonsense" remarks, which "thoughtlessly tarnish the image of a sovereign state as a grave political provocation".
Rubio's comments were "nothing new" and "it would be more surprising if he had said (a) good word about the DPRK", he added.
Senior analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification, Hong Min, according to news agency AFP said that Pyongyang's statement was issued by someone who holds a significant position and coming from such a level, it carries weight.

"The statement interestingly is a mixed signal," said Hong.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed that Pyongyang's nuclear programme would continue "indefinitely", state media reported Wednesday, days after new US President Donald Trump said he would make renewed diplomatic overtures to the reclusive leader.
Kim recently visited a nuclear-material production facility, Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency said, where Kim warned of an "inevitable" confrontation with hostile nations and said 2025 would be a "crucial year" for bolstering North Korea's nuclear forces.
"It is our firm political and military stand and invariable noble task and duty to develop the state's nuclear counteraction posture indefinitely," Kim said, according to KCNA.

The report, and Kim's nuclear factory visit, follow Pyongyang's test-firing on Saturday of sea-to-surface strategic guided cruise missiles, its first weapons test since Trump returned to the White House on January 20.
In response, an official with the US National Security Council said Trump would pursue "the complete denuclearisation of North Korea, just as he did in his first term", according to a report from the South Korean Yonhap news agency.&nbsp;

"On the other hand, Washington's working-level officials are now making clear that they focused on negotiating with the ultimate goal of achieving complete denuclearisation," he said.&nbsp;

North Korea has carried out its first weapons test since the inauguration of US President Donald Trump on 20 January. The test involved what Pyongyang described as "strategic" cruise missiles, a term often associated with nuclear-capable weaponry. The move comes as North Korea criticised joint military exercises conducted by the United States and South Korea.

However, the Joint Chiefs of Staff did not provide details of what follow-up measures North Korea is considering.&nbsp;

The capture of two North Korean soldiers by Ukrainian forces marks a significant moment in Russia&rsquo;s war against Ukraine. Their testimonies have been crucial in confirming details about these troops and Pyongyang that were previously only assumptions.
<h2>Russia's effort to hide North Korean soldiers</h2>
Russia has gone to great lengths to disguise the presence of 12,000 North Korean troops sent by North Korea to support its war on Ukraine. To maintain secrecy, the North Koreans were given Russian uniforms, weapons, and falsified military documents.

They were even assigned Russian names, and most of them were 'born' in the Siberian republic of Tuva, where the population has Asian features. These troops were integrated into Russian marine and assault corps units and sent to the frontlines.
<h2>Pretence falls apart</h2>
This deception unravelled last week when Ukrainian forces captured two North Korean soldiers on the battlefield. Both were injured and later transported to Kyiv, where Ukraine&rsquo;s intelligence agency, the SBU, interrogated them with assistance from South Korea&rsquo;s national intelligence service.

One of the captured soldiers, identified as 25-year-old Sergeant Lee Jong Nam from Pyongyang, joined the North Korean army in 2016. He served in a sniper reconnaissance platoon within the fifth battalion of the Democratic People&rsquo;s Republic of Korea (DPRK). His first combat assignment in Ukraine took place on 8 January, during which he sustained a jaw injury.
Footage of the second soldier, whose identity remains unknown, was shared by President Volodymyr Zelensky. From his hospital bed, the soldier said that he was lying in the open for several days after being wounded in the leg. He said that the name on his Russian military ID was fabricated, saying, &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t remember it. It wasn&rsquo;t mine.&rdquo; He also thought he was participating in a training exercise.
<h2>Raised 'in an information vacuum'</h2>
Zelensky criticised Moscow for exploiting these soldiers, describing them as being raised in &ldquo;an information vacuum&rdquo; and used by Russia solely to prolong and escalate its war against Ukraine. The timing of their capture is significant, as Kyiv faces growing challenges, including Russia&rsquo;s advances in the east and uncertainty over potential changes in US foreign policy.

South Korean military says North Korea has launched multiple short-range ballistic missiles towards the sea off the country's east coast. Watch in for more details!

North Korea fired several ballistic missiles into the sea: Seoul military

North Korea Fires Short-range Ballistic Missiles

North Korea fired several short-range ballistic missiles into the sea Tuesday, according to Seoul's military, in what experts said could be a message to US President-elect Donald Trump's incoming administration.
The launch comes as Japan's foreign minister Takeshi Iwaya visits South Korea for a series of meetings with top officials, with the Asian neighbours seeking to boost bilateral ties before Trump returns to office next week.
"The South Korean military detected several short-range ballistic missiles fired into the East Sea," Seoul's military said, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan.
It said the launch took place around 09:30 am local time (0030 GMT) near North Korea's Ganggye area, with the missiles flying 250 kilometres (155 miles) before landing in the sea.
"The intelligence authorities of South Korea and the US have detected and monitored North Korea's missile launch preparations in advance, and immediately detected and tracked them at the time of launch," the military said.
It said it was maintaining "full readiness" and sharing information with the United States and Japan while "strengthening surveillance and alertness" for more launches.
Seoul's acting President Choi Sang-mok slammed the launch, saying it violated UN Security Council resolutions.
"Seoul will respond more strongly to North Korea's provocations based on its strong security posture and alliance with the US," he said.
Experts said the latest launch on Tuesday could be intended as a message to the incoming Trump administration.
"It could be aimed at the US," said Yang Moo-jin, president of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul.
"It may indicate an intention to put pressure ahead of the Trump administration's second term."
Ahn Chan-il, a defector-turned-researcher who runs the World Institute for North Korea Studies, told AFP "it appears to be an intention to assert presence ahead of the Trump administration".
He said it could also be aimed at "destabilising South Korea during Seoul's own period of turmoil", as suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol faces an impeachment trial that begins Tuesday in the Constitutional Court after a failed martial law bid last month.
<h2>Second test this year&nbsp;</h2>
The Tuesday launch is Pyongyang's second this year, after it fired last week what it said was a new hypersonic missile system aimed at deterring the country's rivals in the Pacific.
The location of the test site was undisclosed but images released by North Korean state media KCNA showed leader Kim Jong Un observing last week's launch with his teenage daughter Ju Ae.
Kim said the missile flew 1,500 kilometres (930 miles) -- beyond the 1,100-kilometre (680-mile) figure given by South Korea's military -- and travelled at 12 times the speed of sound before landing in the ocean.
KCNA cited the use of a "new compound of carbon fibre" in the missile's engine, which experts warned could allow Pyongyang to hit further targets with technology to which only the United States, Russia and China currently have access.
The launch also used a "new comprehensive and effective method" for its flight and guidance control system, KCNA said.
Last week's alleged hypersonic missile launch came as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was visiting South Korea.&nbsp;
While in Seoul, Blinken said Russia was increasing cooperation with Pyongyang, adding they were working ever more closely on advanced space technology.
<h2>US warnings&nbsp;</h2>
Blinken also voiced renewed concern that Russia, a veto-wielding UN Security Council member, would formally accept North Korea as a nuclear state in a blow to global consensus that Pyongyang must end its programme.
In late October, North Korea test-fired what it said was its most advanced and powerful solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). Days later, it fired a salvo of short-range ballistic missiles.
In response, South Korea fired a ballistic missile into the sea in a show of force.
US and South Korean intelligence also believe that North Korea late last year sent thousands of troops to fight against Ukraine and has already suffered hundreds of casualties.
But neither North Korea nor Russia has officially confirmed that Pyongyang's forces are fighting for Moscow.

North Korea fires short-range ballistic missiles into sea

North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine have been ordered by Pyongyang to take their own lives rather than get captured, according to a South Korean lawmaker who was briefed by the country's spy agency on Monday (Jan 13).
"Memos found on deceased soldiers indicate that the North Korean authorities pressured them to commit suicide or self-detonate before capture," lawmaker Lee Seong-kweun claimed in comments to reporters, citing information from the National Intelligence Service.
Over 300 North Korean soldiers have lost their lives and 2,700 were injured while fighting Russia's war against Ukraine.
"The deployment of North Korean troops to Russia has reportedly expanded to include the Kursk region, with estimates suggesting that casualties among North Korean forces have surpassed 3,000," Lee said after&nbsp;a briefing from Seoul's National Intelligence Service.
This includes "approximately 300 deaths and 2,700 injuries," Lee said.
Out of these, some of the soldiers were granted "amnesty" or expressed willingness to join North Korea's ruling Workers' Party, he added.
One soldier, who was facing imminent capture, cried out "General Kim Jong Un" before attempting to blow himself up with a grenade, said Lee.
The analysis carried out by NIS unveiled that the soldiers from North Korea displayed a "lack of understanding of modern warfare," and Russia is using them in a manner which is leading to their "high number of casualties," said the lawmaker.

North Korean leader Kim Jon Un released a statement on Tuesday (Jan 7) saying that the new hypersonic missile launched this week can deter all rivals in the Pacific region, according to state media reports.
"The hypersonic missile system will reliably contain any rivals in the Pacific region that can affect the security of our state," Kim, who oversaw the launch, said in comments carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Tuesday.
North Korea's latest missile launch has raised concerns among experts, who warn that the use of a "new compound of carbon fibre" in the missile's engine could significantly extend its range.&nbsp;
The launch, as per KCNA, also used a "new comprehensive and effective method" for its flight and guidance control system.
The North Korean leader also said that the missile launched on Monday achieved impressive milestones by flying 1,500 kilometres (930 miles), surpassing the 1,100-kilometre estimate provided by South Korea's military.&nbsp;
Additionally, the missile travelled at an astonishing 12 times the speed of sound before landing in the ocean.
"This is clearly a plan and effort for self-defence, not an offensive plan and action," Kim said.
He said that the missile's performance could "not be ignored worldwide", saying it was able to "deal a serious military strike to a rival while effectively breaking any dense defensive barrier".
"The development of the defence capabilities of the DPRK aiming to be a military power will be further accelerated," Kim said.
<h2>Blinken condemns North Korea&rsquo;s actions &nbsp;</h2>
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was visiting South Korea at the time, strongly criticised the missile test. Calling it "yet another violation of multiple Security Council resolutions," Blinken emphasised the Biden administration&rsquo;s willingness to engage with North Korea without preconditions, despite repeated provocations.
Blinken highlighted the importance of trilateral collaboration between the US, South Korea, and Japan, noting that joint efforts have strengthened real-time information sharing and enhanced collective defence. The missile launch, he said, serves as a stark reminder of the need for such cooperation.

North Korea conducts ballistic missile test amid Blinken’s visit to South Korea

In a significant boost to its naval power, North Korea revealed its latest warship which is equipped with advanced missile technology.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was seen inspecting the new destroyer at a facility as per the images released by state media, according to the Telegraph report.
The analysts, according to the report, believe that the warship was at the Nampho Dockyard, located on the west coast of the country.
The initial images of the incomplete warship indicate that it will have a beam of around 50 feet and an overall length of approximately 330 feet. At over 3,600 tonnes, it will represent a substantial expansion of North Korea's naval capabilities, overshadowing its current largest vessel, a 1,360-tonne frigate.
The naval warship is &ldquo;likely a destroyer and the largest warship ever constructed in the DPRK [Democratic People&rsquo;s Republic of Korea]&rdquo;, Joseph Dempsey, an analyst at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, told Seoul-based NK News.
&ldquo;Weapons-wise, the large aperture immediately forward of the bridge would imply [plans to install a] possible vertical launching system&rdquo; for missiles.
This comes as North Korea and Russia are strengthening ties following a security pact in the year 2024.
Since Russia&rsquo;s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Pyongyang and Moscow have frequently professed their military, political, and cultural ties.&nbsp;
In June this year, when Putin visited North Korea, the two nations signed a landmark defence pact. The pact came into effect in December and obligates them to provide military support in case the other is invaded.

North Korean troops deployed in Russia&rsquo;s Kursk region, fighting Ukraine have been facing severe losses since the day they began to help Russian forces in its war with Ukraine. US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby stressed that the troops sent by North Korea, are killing themselves rather than risking capture.&nbsp;
Emphasising that the North Korean generals see their soldiers as "expendable", Kirby said that more than 1,000 North Korean soldiers had been killed or wounded in the last week.&nbsp;
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky estimated that almost 3,000 Pyongyang soldiers have been killed or injured so far.&nbsp;

A &ldquo;human wave&rdquo; of North Korean soldiers fighting on Russia's side in the Ukraine war are being sent to their deaths in &ldquo;hopeless&rdquo; attacks by generals who saw them as "expendable", he said.&nbsp;

"We also have reports of North Korean soldiers taking their own lives rather than surrendering to Ukrainian forces," he said, adding that the soldiers are taking such actions likely out of fear of reprisal against their families in North Korea in case they are captured.&nbsp;
