North Korean soldier captured by Ukraine dies from injuries, claims South Korea's spy agency

South Korea's spy agency said on Friday (December 27, 2024) it had confirmed that a North Korean soldier sent to Russia's war against Ukraine had been captured by Ukrainian forces.
Pyongyang has deployed thousands of troops to reinforce Russian troops, including in the Kursk border region where Ukraine mounted a shock border incursion in August.

"Through real-time information sharing with an allied country's intelligence agency, it has been confirmed that one injured North Korean soldier has been captured," South Korea's National Intelligence Service said in a statement.
The soldier was captured by the Ukrainian army, an intelligence source told AFP, adding that the location where he was seized was unknown.
The first confirmation of the capture of a North Korean soldier came days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Monday that nearly 3,000 North Korean soldiers had been "killed or wounded" so far.

Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) also said Monday that more than 1,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed or wounded.
The JCS had also said that Pyongyang is reportedly "preparing for the rotation or additional deployment of soldiers" and supplying "240mm rocket launchers and 170mm self-propelled artillery" to the Russian army.
Seoul's military believes that North Korea was seeking to modernise its conventional warfare capabilities through combat experience gained in the Russia-Ukraine war.
North Korean state media said Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a New Year's message to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying "the bilateral ties between our two countries have been elevated after our talks in June in Pyongyang".
A landmark defence pact went into effect in December after the two sides exchanged ratification documents.
Putin hailed the deal in June as a "breakthrough document".

Injured North Korean soldier fighting for Russia captured by Ukrainian forces: Report

Washington, United States
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Japan’s National Police Agency have said that a North Korean hacking group, TraderTraitor, stole cryptocurrency worth $308 million from Japan-based exchange DMM Bitcoin earlier this year in May.
TraderTraitor, known to be a part of Lazarus Group, targets multiple employees from the same organisation at the same time. The infamous Lazarus Group is allegedly linked to Pyongyang authorities and has been accused of hacking into Sony Pictures for mocking North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the film The Interview.

“The theft of cryptocurrency worth $308 million US dollars from the Japan-based cryptocurrency company DMM by North Korean cyber actors,” the FBI stated in a statement on Monday (Dec 23).
The North Korean cyber actors facilitated a “targeted social engineering” operation in which they pretended to be LinkedIn recruiters and contacted an employee at a Japan-based enterprise cryptocurrency wallet software company Ginco in late March.
They then sent a malicious code under the guise of a pre-employment test on a GitHub page, which allowed hackers to gain access to their system and impersonate the employee.

In late May, the hackers manipulated a legitimate transaction request by a DMM employee. According to the FBI, the attack led to losses of 4,502.9 BTC, worth $308 million, which were transferred to TraderTraitor-controlled wallets.
“The FBI, National Police Agency of Japan, and other U.S. government and international partners will continue to expose and combat North Korea’s use of illicit activities—including cybercrime and cryptocurrency theft—to generate revenue for the regime,” the FBI added in its statement.
According to a 2020 US military report, North Korea’s cyber-warfare agency, Bureau 121, has over 6,000 members operating from several countries. The program can be tracked back to at least the mid-1990s.

Kyiv, Ukraine
Ukraine's military agency on Monday (Dec 16) claimed that around 30 North Korean troops were killed or wounded in Russia's Kursk border region. This comes as the first reported casualties since Kyiv announced that Pyongyang has sent 10,000 troops to Russia to help in its war with Ukraine.
Pentagon and Ukraine have claimed that North Korean soldiers have been deployed to help Russia in its war with Ukraine.
The North Korean units were involved in assaults on the weekend near three villages, according to Ukraine’s defence intelligence service.
They added that three North Korean soldiers went missing during clashes near the villages of Pleskhovo, Vorozhba, and Martynovka close to the border.
Meanwhile, earlier, a Ukrainian frontline drone unit posted a video on Sunday, showing the bodies of more than 20 North Korean soldiers lined up in an icy field. However, the quality of the video was not good enough to verify their identity, reported CNN.

Putin sends African lion and rare animals to Pyongyang zoo as a ‘gift to the Korean people’

South Korean police confirmed Thursday (Nov 21) that a cybercriminal group from the North was behind a multimillion-dollar cryptocurrency heist in 2019. In November of that year, cybercriminals targeted South Korean crypto exchange Upbit and stole Ethereum tokens worth some US$50 million.

It is the first time that North Korea's role has been confirmed. In total, 342,000 tokens were stolen and now their worth is estimated to be over a billion dollars.

Following the attack, South Korea's cyber terror division launched an investigation that ran for years and has now revealed that Lazarus Group and Andariel threat groups related to the North carried out the theft. South Korean police tracked the perpetrators by identifying the cybercriminals' IP addresses and the movement of the virtual assets in collaboration with the FBI, according to authorities.

Earlier in October, law enforcement agencies in South Korea were able to recover tokens worth $470,000 from the cybercriminals by working in tandem with the Swiss authorities, as the stolen currency was stored in the banks of the European country.

Concerns are mounting regarding North Korean cryptocurrency theft as more cases have been unearthed by investigators over the recent years. In 2022, the country’s groups were blamed for the theft of some $620 million worth of ethereum.

According to a report by the United Nations released in March, cryptocurrency theft accounted for half of North Korea’s total revenue. Most of the stolen funds go into funding the Pyongyang’s missile and nuclear programme, as per reports.

North Korean leader - Kim Jong Un has ordered the mass production of suicide drones. Why is North Korea ramping up the production of "Suicide drones"?

Kim Jong Un Orders Mass Production of Suicide Drones

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered the test and "mass production" of suicide drones claiming that the introduction of such drones around the world requires an urgent update of military theory, state media outlet Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

The agency released still photographs showing Kim with the drones and quoted him saying that the competition to use such suicide drones is increasing around the world.

This would not be the first time that North Korea will be launching a test for suicide drones.

Pyongyang first unveiled these drones in August, with experts saying the capability may be attributed to the country's budding alliance with Russia.

The nuclear-armed country has ratified a landmark defence pact with Moscow and is accused of deploying thousands of troops to Russia to support its war in Ukraine, prompting South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to warn about the potential transfer of sensitive Russian military technology to North Korea.

Kim on Thursday oversaw the tests of drones designed to hit both land and sea targets, produced by North Korea's Unmanned Aerial Technology Complex, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

"He underscored the need to build a serial production system as early as possible and go into full-scale mass production," KCNA added.

The unmanned drones are designed to carry explosives and be deliberately crashed into enemy targets, effectively acting as guided missiles.

Thursday's test saw the drones "precisely" hit targets after flying along predetermined paths, KCNA reported.

"The suicide attack drones to be used within different striking ranges are to perform a mission to precisely attack any enemy targets on the ground and in the sea," the agency said.

Kim said the drones were an "easy to use... component of striking power" due to their relatively low production cost and expansive range of applications, according to KCNA.

He said the North had "recently attached importance" to developing unmanned hardware systems and to integrating them with the country's overall military strategy.

Kim Jong Un orders 'mass production' of suicide drones: Report

US top diplomat Antony Blinken warned Wednesday (Nov 13) that the deployment of North Korean troops alongside Russian forces on the Ukrainian border demanded a "firm response," during talks with top EU and NATO officials.

The secretary of state was in Brussels to confer with Washington's allies on ramping up support for Kyiv before Donald Trump reclaims the White House – potentially jeopardising future aid.

Addressing reporters alongside NATO chief Mark Rutte, Blinken said they had discussed the entry of Pyongyang's forces "into the battle, and now, quite literally, in combat – which demands and will get a firm response."

The US State Department confirmed Tuesday that thousands of North Korean troops have begun "engaging in combat operations" alongside Russian forces in the Kursk region, near the border with Ukraine.

Blinken called it "a profound and incredibly dangerous development", without specifying what form a US response might take.

Rutte meanwhile stressed the crucial role played by China in helping Russia's "war effort", as well as by Iranian weapons deliveries -- paid for with Russian funds that were, in turn, helping Tehran to "destabilize the Middle East".

Blinken's trip came as Trump's election victory, coupled with a political crisis in Germany, heightens fears about the future of assistance for Ukraine at a key point in the fight against Russia's invasion.

The secretary of state told reporters President Joe Biden was "committed to making sure that every dollar we have at our disposal will be pushed out the door between now and January 20," when Trump takes office.

But he also reiterated the call for Washington's allies to step up.

"We're counting on European partners and others to strongly support Ukraine's mobilization," Blinken said – calling for more artillery, more air defences, more munitions as well as training for Kyiv's forces.

Blinken took part in a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, NATO's decision-making body, before talks with Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga, who urged allies to "speed up all critical decisions."

"Ukraine's defence cannot be put on hold," Sybiga warned.

The secretary of state also held talks with the European Union's top diplomat Josep Borrell and his successor Kaja Kallas, a Russia hawk who is to take over a few weeks from now.

At her confirmation hearing on Tuesday, Kallas said the bloc must support Ukraine "for as long as it takes, and with as much military, financial and humanitarian help as needed."

Trump has in the past voiced admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin and scoffed at the $175 billion the United States has committed for Ukraine since the start of the war in 2022.

US media have reported Trump's pick for secretary of state may be Senator Marco Rubio – who has argued Washington should show "pragmatism" in its support as the war hits a "stalemate".

The Biden administration has made clear it plans in its remaining weeks to push through the more than $9 billion of remaining funding appropriated by Congress for weapons and other security assistance to Ukraine.

But despite Kyiv's pleas, it seems unlikely Washington will lift its veto on Ukraine's use of long-range missiles to strike deep into Russian territory – and Blinken did not tackle the issue in Brussels.

"Basically it was to do more of the same but more aggressively" for the remainder of Biden's term, was how one NATO diplomat summed up the US goals, as laid out by Blinken.

Trump in his first term aggressively pushed Europe to step up defence spending and questioned the fairness of the NATO transatlantic alliance – robustly defended by Biden.

"Whatever approach the US leadership takes towards Ukraine, Europe will have to step up, and we will have to take the lead in supporting Ukraine's defence efforts and macro-financial stability," said Olena Prokopenko of the German Marshall Fund of the United States.

US vows 'firm' response to North Korea for deploying troops in Ukraine

North Korea has been accused of GPS jamming attacks that have disrupted several ships in dozens of civilian aircraft in South Korea on Friday and Saturday. Watch in for more details!

South Korea Asks North Korea To End 'Illegal' Provocations

The South Korean military said that North Korea disrupted GPS signals in border areas for the second consecutive day on Saturday (Nov 9), affecting an unspecified number of flights and vessel operations.

The South Korean military said that North Korea disrupted GPS signals in border areas for the second consecutive day on Saturday (Nov 9), affecting an unspecified number of flights and vessel operations. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said that North Korean operations to manipulate GPS signals were detected from around the western border city of Kaesong and the nearby city of Haeju on Friday and Saturday, adding that the activities disrupted dozens of civilian aircraft and several vessels. The JCS urged Pyongyang to immediately halt the latest provocation and warned it would be held accountable for its actions. The increased risk in South Korean airspace Citing an analyst, a report by the news agency Associated Press on Saturday said that North Korea's GPS signal disruptions and balloon campaigns highlighted the vulnerability of South Korea’s Incheon International Airport. The analyst said, "No major aviation incidents have resulted to date, but GPS interference can endanger commercial airlines flying in poor visibility, and it is a violation of international conventions on navigational safety." The analyst pointed out that trash balloons sent by North Korea earlier this year halted the airport’s runway operations 12 different times for a total of 265 minutes. Meanwhile, aviation experts have said that Pyongyang's trash balloon campaign, missile launches and the emergence of GPS "spoofing" have increased risks in South Korean airspace. While warning aircraft and vessels near western border areas, South Korea did not specify how North Korea was interfering with GPS signals or detail the extent of disruptions.
