Japan not sure if North Korea successfully put military spy satellite into orbit

North Korea conducted a rocket launch believed to be carrying a satellite, South Korea and Japan said, in what would be Pyongyang's third attempt to place a satellite in orbit this year. South Korea's military said the rocket was believed to be carrying a spy satellite and was launched toward the south.

North Korea has notified Japan that it plans to launch a rocket satellite into space between Wednesday (Nov 22) to Friday (Dec 1) in the direction of the Yellow Sea and East China Sea, said Japan's coast guard.

The latest development comes despite South Korea issuing a warning to Pyongyang to immediately halt its preparations to fire a spy satellite into space which would be Pyongyang's third attempt this year.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida instructed government ministries and agencies to fully prepare for a possible North Korean launch, said Tokyo's Kyodo news agency citing the PM's office.

Earlier this month, Seoul's spy agency said that Pyongyang was in its definitive phase of preparations for another effort to launch its spy satellite.

"We sternly warn North Korea to... immediately suspend the current preparations to launch a military spy satellite," Kang Ho-pil, chief director of operations at the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Monday.

"If North Korea goes ahead with the launch of a military reconnaissance satellite despite our warning, our military will take necessary measures to guarantee the lives and safety of the people."

In a coordinated effort to combat North Korean cyber activities, the United States, South Korea, and Japan have agreed to establish a high-level consultative group. These activities have been identified as a significant source of funding for North Korea's illicit weapons programmes, as reported by South Korea's presidential office, reported Reuters news agency.

Last week, Anne Neuberger, the US deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, engaged in discussions with her counterparts from South Korea and Japan in Washington.

Thousands of North Korean IT workers in US sent money home for ballistic missile programme

Israeli soldiers have reportedly found North Korea-made artillery from Hamas militants, indicating Pyongyang’s involvement in the illegal supply of weapons to militant groups as a way to fund its nuclear weapons programme.

Although the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) is yet to make an official statement, AP news agency reported that Israeli forces seized an F-7 rocket-propelled grenade—a shoulder-fired weapon that fighters typically use against armoured vehicles—from the battlefield.

The report further states the weapon was first used when Hamas militants launched an unprecedented attack on October 7.

The confirmation first came from South Korean officials on Tuesday (Oct 17) who based their assertions on a military analysis of media photos and video of the Hamas attacks.

The officials identified the terrorists using F-7 rocket-propelled grenade launchers, which they claimed is another name for North Korea’s RPG-7 launcher.

“Hamas is believed to be directly or indirectly linked to North Korea in various areas, such as the weapons trade, tactical guidance and training,” a senior member of the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, who did not want to be named, told reporters at a special press briefing in Seoul, reported the Yonhap news agency.

The official further claimed that North Korean-made 122mm multiple rocket launchers and artillery shells were also found on the Israel-Gaza border.

“There is a possibility that North Korea could use Hamas' attack methods [in the event of] a surprise invasion of South Korea," he said.

Moreover, Hamas has previously released many propaganda videos and photos showing its fighters with North Korea’s Bulsae guided anti-tank missile, reports AP news agency.

North Korea accuses US of inciting tension with 'nuclear supremacy'

Lavrov to visit North Korea: Concerns over diplomatic exchanges between Russia, North Korea

US already has security alliances with Japan and South Korea

Russian ships linked to military transport networks have collected cargo from North Korea and delivered it to an apparent Russian military port on multiple occasions over the past two months, The Washington Post said in a report on Monday (Oct 16) citing satellite images. This is the clearest evidence so far that North Korea might be helping Moscow's war effort.

As per the report, the two ships had no record of running this route between the two countries (North Korea and Russia) until August. At that time, US intelligence assessments suggested that Russia was looking to get North Korean weaponry to replenish its dwindling supplies for the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Satellite images provided by the London-based Royal United Services Institute showed that two ships - the Angara and the Maria - have been plying the route between the North Korean port of Rajin and a secure port facility in Russia's Dunai, making at least five round trips beginning mid-August through last Saturday.

As per RUSI analysts and US officials, the images showed ships linked to the Russian military logistics network which strongly suggested that these commercial vessels were carrying military equipment.

“This will have a very serious effect on the trajectory of the war," Jack Watling from the RUSI said, adding that North Korea has the ability to manufacture a lot of ammunition and the country also has significant stockpiles.

The Washington Post reported that around the time the shipments began, munition pits were rapidly expanded at an ammunition depot near the Ukrainian border.

Citing data from Marine Traffic, a ship-tracking site, the report said the two vessels went dark shortly before they began operating on this route by turning off the signal of their automatic identification system. This allowed the vessels to hide their position as they transited between ports.

The images showed two vessels making multiple trips between Dunai and Rajin, picking up and delivering cargo at each location.

Last Friday, the White House said that North Korea delivered over 1,000 containers of military equipment and munitions to Russia in recent weeks for use in Ukraine.

"We condemn the DPRK (North Korea's official name) for providing Russia with this military equipment, which will be used to attack Ukrainian cities, kill Ukrainian civilians, and further Russia's illegitimate war," White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters

"We will continue to monitor for any additional DPRK arms shipments to Russia," he added.

The White House official also said that the expanding military partnership between North Korea and Russia including any technology transfers from Moscow to Pyongyang undermined regional stability and the global non-proliferation regime.

"We condemn the DPRK (North Korea's official name) for providing Russia with this military equipment, which will be used to attack Ukrainian cities, kill Ukrainian civilians, and further Russia's illegitimate war," White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters "We will continue to monitor for any additional DPRK arms shipments to Russia," he added. The White House official also said that the expanding military partnership between North Korea and Russia including any technology transfers from Moscow to Pyongyang undermined regional stability and the global non-proliferation regime. North Korea slams US aircraft carrier visit to South Korean port, calls it 'undisguised provocation'

Train traffic between North Korea and Russia has spiked dramatically following a recent summit between Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin, indicating a "likely" transfer of arms, according to a new report by Washington-based analysts Beyond Parallel.

High-resolution satellite imagery reveals at least 70 freight cars at North Korea's border Tumangang Rail Facility, the group said Friday, a number described as "unprecedented" even when compared to pre-Covid levels.

No more than 20 cars had been seen in the railyard over the previous five years, the report said.

The flurry of activity "likely indicates North Korea's supply of arms and munitions to Russia", the report concludes, while adding that tarps covering the shipping containers made it impossible to "conclusively identify" their contents.

The analysis comes a day after CBS News cited an unnamed US official as saying North Korea had begun transferring artillery to Russia for use in its war in Ukraine.

Last month's face-to-face meeting between Putin and Kim sparked widespread concern among Kyiv's allies over the possibility of a potential arms deal.

North Korea, which the US has previously accused of supplying shells to Russia's Wagner Group, is a mass producer of conventional weaponry and is known to be sitting on large stocks of Soviet-era war material -- albeit in unknown condition.

Russia has ramped up production of shells this year to a forecast 2.5 million, but analysts have suggested that could fall short of its needs on the battlefield. Moscow's forces are firing about 60,000 rounds per day, according to Ukrainian figures.

After Kim-Putin meet, train traffic between North Korea and Russia spikes

Satellite images reportedly show a dramatic surge in rail traffic along the North Korea-Russia border.

Has North Korea begun sending arms to Russia?

In a move to defy the United States North Korea has adopted a constitutional amendment to bolster and expand its nuclear force.

Kim Jong-Un pledges to accelerate production of nuclear arsenal

North Korea has made nuclear weapons status part of its constitution, state media reported on Thursday (Sep 28) quoting Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un. At a meeting of the State People's Assembly that was held Tuesday and Wednesday, Kim said that North Korea's nuclear force-building policy has been made permanent as the basic law of the state, which no one is allowed to flout.

"This is a historic event that provided a powerful political lever for remarkably strengthening the national defence capabilities," he added. The supreme leader urged officials to "further promote solidarity with the nations standing against the US and the West's strategy for hegemony," denouncing trilateral cooperation between the US, South Korea, and Japan as the "Asian-version NATO." "This is just the worst actual threat, not threatening rhetoric or an imaginary entity," he said. A record number of weapons tests this year This year, North Korea carried out a record number of weapons tests, and now Kim has pledged to accelerate production of nuclear weapons to deter what he called US "provocations." According to a report by the news agency AFP on Thursday, Pyongyang might conduct its first nuclear test since 2017. It has conducted six in all since 2006. Last week, Kim came back from Russia during which he and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to boost military cooperation. Officials from the US and South Korea expressed concerns that Pyongyang could be seeking technological help for its nuclear and missile programmes while Moscow tries to acquire ammunition from the North to supplement its dwindling stocks for its offensive in Ukraine. At UNGA, Pyongyang's dig at Seoul, Washington On Tuesday, North Korea's United Nations (UN) envoy Kim Song addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) where he blamed the United States and South Korea for creating the situation in which Pyongyang "is urgently required to further accelerate the build-up of self-defence capabilities." “The Reckless Act of the US and its foreign forces are exerting irreversibly destructive impact on the regional, political, military situation and security structure as they drive the situation of the Korean Peninsula into actual armed conflict. Given the prevailing circumstances, the DPRK is urgently required to further accelerate the build-up of self-defence capabilities to defend itself impregnably," Song said. “Owing to the reckless and continued hysteria of nuclear showdown on the part of the United States and its foreign forces, The year 2023 has been recorded as an extremely dangerous year, that the military security situation in and around the Korean Peninsula was a threat even closer to the brink of a nuclear war,” he added. The US soldier Travis King who crossed the border from South Korea to North Korea in July has now been freed by Pyongyang. The National Security advisor Jake Sullivan said in a statement that the US officials have secured the return of King from North Korea.

US soldier Travis King released by North Korea with help of Sweden & China

US Army Private Travis King has returned to a US military facility in Texas following his expulsion from North Korea, reported CNN. After his daring crossing of the heavily fortified border two months ago, King arrived at Kelly Field on a US military flight on Thursday (Sept 28).

Television broadcasts show a group of people deboarding an aircraft at the base. It is anticipated that King will undergo a medical evaluation at the Brooke Army Medical Center, located within Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. Notably, this medical centre was the facility where basketball star Brittney Griner received treatment in December following her release from Russian detention, a development that followed a prisoner exchange with Russia and ended her ten-month incarceration.

The US government has announced that upon his return, King will undergo an initial assessment followed by a reintegration process aimed at reuniting him with his family.

How did he enter North Korea?

At the age of 23, King made a dash into North Korea from South Korea on July 18 this year while participating in a civilian tour near the heavily fortified border, leading to his immediate arrest by North Korean authorities.

It remains unclear whether King will face disciplinary action from the US Army, which has handled his case with caution. Thus far, the Army has refrained from labelling him as a deserter, despite his unauthorised border crossing while on active duty.

North Korea, on the other hand, appears to have treated King's case as one of illegal immigration. North Korea's KCNA state news agency reported that King had informed Pyongyang that he entered North Korea illegally due to disillusionment with the unequal aspects of US society.

The Swedish government, acting as the representative of US interests in North Korea, facilitated King's return from North Korea and transported him to China.

The US State Department confirmed that the US Ambassador to Beijing, Nicholas Burns, met with King in Dandong, a city bordering North Korea. From there, King travelled to Shenyang, China, and then to Osan Air Force Base in South Korea before making his journey back to the United States.

King enlisted in the US Army in January 2021 and faced two allegations of assault during his time in South Korea. Court documents indicate that he pleaded guilty to one instance of assault and damaging public property, related to an incident involving the destruction of a police car during a profanity-laden confrontation with Koreans. Further disciplinary actions awaited him upon his return to the United States.

In July, King had completed his military detention and was awaiting US military transport to rejoin his home unit in the United States at the airport. Instead, he chose to leave the airport and participate in a tour of the border region, ultimately crossing into North Korea despite attempts by South Korean and US guards to stop him.
