The meteorological phenomenon known as ‘shelf cloud’, as the name suggests is a formation of large shelf-like clouds which, according to an Australian weather app, Weatherzone, form either at the forefront of a thunderstorm or along the boundary of a cold front.&nbsp;

Shelf clouds typically appear as a broad arc across the sky and are characterised by a swirling mass of clouds. Additionally, while the edge of the cloud is typically well-defined it can also sometimes appear to be rotating horizontally.

<h2>What does this cloud formation indicate?</h2>

Despite their rather intimidating appearance, shelf clouds are not an indication of tornadoes or severe storms but are rather produced by thunderstorms and preceded by a rush of dry and cold air ahead of the cloud.&nbsp;

The cloud formation is also said to be an indication of important weather changes, especially during the thunderstorms’ approach and in some cases also brings heavy rain, lightning and large hail.&nbsp;

Therefore, while you can admire the appearance of the cloud formation from afar, it is best to seek shelter before it gets too close.&nbsp;

Shelf clouds form when cold and dense air is pushed by the wind into a warmer air mass. The rush of cold air often occurs in a thunderstorm’s downdraught, when the cold air rushes towards the ground and spreads out to create a gust front, as per Weatherzone.&nbsp;

This also comes as North Indian states are grappling with heavy rains over the last couple of days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), on Tuesday also issued a ‘red alert’ for Uttarakhand and neighbouring Uttar Pradesh as parts of the two states may witness heavy to very heavy rainfall.&nbsp;

Torrential rains wreak havoc in north

In the last two days, the northern Indian states of&nbsp;Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana have&nbsp;received extremely heavy monsoon rainfall which had led to the loss of lives, the breaking of bridges, damage to highways and other infrastructure. 
 
According to the India Meteorological Department, till the end of June, there was a 10 per cent deficiency in rainfall, However, in the past week, monsoon surged over the west coast and regions of northern India received two&nbsp;per cent excess rainfall on July 9.

<h2>How much rainfall did North India receive?</h2>

Northwest India was battered by 59 per cent excess rainfall; central India received four&nbsp;per cent excess rainfall, peninsular India remained 23 per cent&nbsp;deficient and 17 per cent deficiency was recorded over east and northeast India, stated the weather office. 
 
Several places in Haryana and Punjab received record rainfall between Saturday and Sunday - Chandigarh at 32 cm; Ambala at 22 cm; Delhi at 15 cm; Nangal at 28 cm; and Ropar at 27 cm – which caused severe flooding. Himachal Pradesh’s Bhuntar region recorded a 10 cm rainfall and Mandi received eight&nbsp;cm rain until 8:30 am on Sunday.

“The Chandigarh observatory was set up in 2009 and prior to that, the figures were taken from the Chandigarh airforce observatory itself. Even the airforce observatory has seen maximum notches going up to 286.0 mm but not as much as the current figures,” stated a senior official of the MET department, while speaking to Indian Express. 
 
Overall, Himachal Pradesh recorded 103.8 mm of rainfall from Saturday to Sunday compared to eight&nbsp;mm, which it normally records, resulting in&nbsp;1,193 per cent of excess rainfall. Meanwhile, Punjab received 57.5 mm of rainfall compared to the normal of 4.6 mm rainfall, which again made it 1,151 per cent of excess rain for the day.

<h2>Why such a sudden surge in monsoon rainfall?</h2>

As per the&nbsp;India Meteorological Department, an interaction between the monsoon trough and a western disturbance has led to heavy rainfall. 
 
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, speaking to Hindustan Times, said, “The interaction is causing heavy to very heavy rainfall over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, north Punjab and Haryana, Uttarakhand. As forecast by us that there will be good rainfall in July, we have covered the rainfall deficit now. In the past nine days, rainfall was 24 per cent&nbsp;excess for the period in July. Rainfall will gradually reduce over these states from tomorrow onwards." 
 
“This happens because of large-scale systems. We had good monsoon circulation, and at the same time, a western disturbance was passing over the region. So, we had strong westerly winds, along with moist easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, resulting in the convergence of these two types of winds over northwest India,” he said, as reported by Indian Express.

Mohapatra said that Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand witnessed maximum intensity of rainfall on Sunday and Jammu and Kashmir faced it on Saturday. “The systems are moving slowly, which is why we saw heavy rainfall in parts of northwest India on Sunday. On Monday, this activity is likely to reduce,” he stated. 
 
Talking about the heavy rainfall spells which broke records in a few parts, Mohapatra stated that the phenomenon is not unusual because heavy and extremely heavy rain is expected during the monsoon.

<h2>Heavy downpour – an impact of climate change?</h2>

Ministry of Earth Sciences' former secretary, M Rajeevan, said the heavy rains which crumbled parts of northern India can be seen as an important impact of climate change. 
 
“Recent heavy rains &amp; flash floods remind us of one of the important impacts of climate change on monsoons. It rains fewer hours, but when it rains, it rains very heavily. Our forewarning systems &amp; mitigation should further improve. This can happen anywhere,” he tweeted. 
 
“Recent Himachal Pradesh floods remind us of the 2013 Uttarakhand floods with similar synoptic conditions. An active monsoon with strong low-level easterlies bringing plenty of moisture, supported by upper-level divergence due to an eastward-moving trough. These are predictable,” stated the former secretary, while speaking to Hindustan Times. 
 
Explaining the impact of climate change, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Roxy Mathew Koll said, "In a changing climate, we see that hilly areas and surroundings - whether it's the Himalayan foothills or the Western Ghats - are particularly susceptible to heavy rains and landslides. Due to global warming, there's extra moisture, and the hills stop this moisture flow and lift it, which comes down as heavy rains. Some of the regions over India where extreme rains have increased are such places where the rains happen due to orographic lifting.”

In a span of 24 hours, Delhi recorded a remarkable 153 mm of rainfall, the highest for a single day in July since 1982.

Over the weekend, heavy rain persisted in Delhi and its adjacent National Capital Region (NCR), leading to waterlogging and power outages in various parts of Gurugram.

A 58-year-old woman lost her life in Delhi when the ceiling of her apartment collapsed on her, while four individuals lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Rajasthan.

In Uttar Pradesh state's Muzaffarnagar, about 128 km from New Delhi, a woman and her six-year-old daughter were killed early on Sunday morning when their house collapsed due to the heavy rain.

In Himachal Pradesh's Shimla, three members of a family lost their lives in a similar incident.

In Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, two Army soldiers tragically died after being swept away in flash floods yesterday.

The IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in over nine districts of Rajasthan, namely Rajsamand, Jalore, Pali, Ajmer, Alwar, Banswara, Bharatpur, Bhilwara, Bundi, Chittorgarh, Dausa, Dhaulpur, Jaipur, and Kota.

Due to the relentless rain and landslides, the annual Amarnath pilgrimage in Jammu and Kashmir has been suspended for the third consecutive day.

A section of the Srinagar-Jammu Highway has suffered a collapse, leaving around 3,000 vehicles stranded.

North India may shiver in another intense cold wave from Saturday as temperatures are set to dip -4 degrees Celsius, according to the predictions of a weather expert on Thursday.&nbsp; Founder of Live Weather of India, an online weather platform, Navdeep Dahiya warned that the cold wave will peak at its ‘extreme’ between January 16 and 18, as he tweeted, “Never seen temperature ensemble going this low in a prediction model so far in my career.”

Dahiya said, "Don't know how to put this up but upcoming spell of cold wave in India look really extreme during January 14-19 with peak on 16-18th... Freezing -4°c to +2°c in plains, Wow!"

He further warned, "January 2023 can be historically coldest - maybe for the 21st century so far?"

This winter, India’s north and north-western parts have been facing dense fog and bone-chilling winters, with temperatures dipping to 1.9 degrees Celsius as recorded at Safdarjung weather station of New Delhi this week.

However, the national capital got some respite after a minimum temperature was recorded at 9.3 degrees Celsius in Safdarjung.

The BJP is not the cause for your well-being, increased standard of living or economic development, it is the Dravidian parties," Babu said, adding that, despite all this, the North Indian Community has always been voting for the BJP out of some fascination.&nbsp;

Interestingly,&nbsp;DMK and AIADMK have been in power in Tamil Nadu since 1967, following the defeat of the then Congress government.

The MLAs and Chief Minister are common representatives, irrespective of whether some people voted for them or not. It is in that spirit that we are working for you," he added.&nbsp;

He further goes on to say that the North Indian Community vote bank did not cast their votes for DMK in Assembly and Parliamentary polls that took place in years 2014, 2016, 2019 and 2021. He claims that the DMK hardly got any votes in the region where North Indians lived in large numbers, despite the party having worked for the community.&nbsp;

In the 2021 Assembly polls, he said that in the areas where North Indians lived, DMK secured only 50 votes, whereas the BJP secured 300-350 votes.
