Yes, NASA seems to be doing such a thing. It has awarded USD 14.1 million to Nokia to deploy 4G cellular network on Moon.

Think about it, if you go to the Moon and in case you lose network, you can call it 'out of the world problem' instead of first/second world one. This seemingly sad tip may bring in a lot of social media cred!

But right now the set up of 4G cellular network on the Moon appears to be for scientific and research purposes.

"The system could support lunar surface communications at greater distances, increased speeds and provide more reliability than current standards," NASA noted in its contract award announcement.

The grant given to Nokia is part of USD 370 million worth of contracts signed under NASA`s "Tipping Point" selections, meant to advance research and development for space exploration.

According to United Press International, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine in a live broadcast said that the space agency must quickly develop new technologies for living and working on the moon if it wants to realise its goal to have astronauts working at a lunar base by 2028.

"We need power systems that can last a long time on the surface of the moon, and we need habitation capability on the surface," Bridenstine said.

Nokia`s research arm, Bell Labs, provided more details in a Twitter thread. The company intends for the network to support wireless operation of lunar rovers and navigation, as well as streaming video.

"Working with our partners at @Int_Machines, this groundbreaking network will be the critical communications fabric for data transmission applications, including the control of lunar rovers, real-time navigation over lunar geography and streaming of high definition video," Bell Labs said in a tweet.

This is not Nokia`s first attempt to launch an LTE network on the moon. It was planned to do this in 2018 in collaboration with PTScientists, a German space company, and Vodafone UK to launch an LTE network at the site of the Apollo 17 landing, but the mission never got off the ground.

The Finnish company Nokia has created an automatic detection system that uses a thermal camera and real-time&nbsp;video analytics to detect whether or not a person has the novel coronavirus.

Telecoms operators Orange Belgium announced on&nbsp;on Friday that it has selected&nbsp;Nokia&nbsp;to renew its networks and roll out 5G instead on Huawei.

When it comes to budget phones, the market is crowded. There are so many options to choose from and this makes it difficult to pick a phone that aligns well with our needs. And now joining the crowd is a new contender - the Nokia 5.3&nbsp;

I got my hands on the new phone and put it to different tests. I will share with you what’s good and what’s bad in HMD's latest Android smartphone, so that you can make an informed buying decision.

Design

I will begin with the design. Like many other Nokia phones from HMD, the Nokia 5.3 is aesthetically designed. The phone has a nice build quality. The gradient design and the circular camera module at the back are likely to draw your attention.

The scratch-resistant back is another highlight of the phone. It hasn’t got even a single scratch in around 15 days that I have spent with it.

Though it’s made of polycarbonate, it has a metallic finish, and that adds to the overall appeal of the phone. Most importantly, it's slim and pretty lightweight, which makes it easy to handle and operate, even for long hours. And a dedicated button gives users faster access to Google Assistant.

I have the Cyan colour with me, but it comes in two more colours - Charcoal and Sand. Overall, the design is nice.

Display

Next comes the display.

The slim bezels and a waterdrop notch add to the overall look of the phone.

The 6.5-inch display with the HD+ resolution is pleasing to the eyes, but note that it’s not the best screen resolution that you would get in this price range. There are sharper displays available on phones in the mid-range category.

I am fine with the display’s brightness, but some of you may find it a little dull.

The absence of 90Hz refresh rate is what I can’t ignore - something which competitors have started to offer on budget phones. Understand that a higher refresh rate results in a smoother and more fluid display experience. I wonder, why HMD decided to not include it.

All in all, the display is of acceptable quality if not the best in class.

Camera

Next comes the camera, something that’s really important for me in a phone. I can still compromise here and there on the design front, but not with the camera.

It has four camera lenses (13 MP + 2 MP + 5 MP + 2 MP) with a flash at the back and an 8 MP camera at the front. But how well does this quad-camera setup fare?

In daylight, and for that matter, even in room-light environments, the camera generates decently bright results, but they lack sharpness and detailing. The Macro mode is a disappointment in most of the conditions.

In Night mode, it captures a good amount of light, but the results are grainy.

Talking about the front camera, it’s satisfactory in daylight, but in low-light, it’s a letdown.

Overall, for me, the cameras of the Nokia 5.3 are below-average performers.

I must admit that the phone got along with me quite well. Mostly, I was doing usual things on the phone - calling, messaging, watching videos, browsing and managing social networks. It was smooth to multitask. The phone neither slowed down nor it had heating issues. I am not very impressed with its speaker; it’s fairly loud, but the audio quality is underwhelming.

The 4000 mAh battery is one of its strongest pillars. It easily lasts for a day, and if the usage isn’t heavy, it can survive for around half-a-day more.

The software is what could make it desirable for some people. The phone runs stock Android 10, meaning no bloatware, a clean interface, and regular software and security updates. The company also promises that it will be upgraded to Android 11.

Also, the Nokia 5.3 comes with a pair of earphones, which is usually not bundled with budget phones.

The dual-SIM phone comes in two variants - 64 GB storage with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB storage with 6 GB of RAM. The former is priced at INR 13,999, while the latter costs INR 15,499.

Verdict

Now comes the most important question - should you buy it? I would say, if the camera isn’t your priority, you can go for it, but if you’re looking for a complete package at INR 15,000, you should give this phone a miss.

On the financial front, Nokia has been leaking money since the Alcatel-Lucent acquisition, also, due to poor investments in products. Ericsson, on the other hand, has been turning more profitable. Huawei is dominating despite security concerns but Nokia is losing its way.

It is eerily similar to how its cellphone business collapsed. In 2007, the global mobile phone sales crossed the $1 billion mark for the first time. Nokia had sold one out of two mobile phones that year that means half a billion mobile phones!

The Nokia 1100 had become the world's largest selling mobile phone with over 1.2 billion units sold since its launch in 2003. Forbes asked the perfect question when it made Nokia its cover story for one of the issues: Nokia - 1 billion customers: Can anyone catch the cellphone king?

When I first got my hands on the Nokia 5310, I couldn’t wait to unbox it. With a plethora of Nokia mobile phones still lying around my house, it’s safe to say that prior to 2007 they were a huge hit in my household. From form factor to being packed with extra features, Nokia was way ahead of its time back then. The overall design language of the 2020 Nokia 5310 turned back the time and brought back many memories. From a design standpoint, the Nokia 5310 is faultless. I got the black variant with the red side panels that include the music buttons and I was sold.&nbsp;

Today, society lives on its smartphones more than ever. Whether we’re lying down in bed, commuting to our offices or just lost in a city that isn’t ours, smartphones come in handy in more ways than one. From HMD Global’s standpoint, releasing feature phones in a market like India makes sense. First, the feature phone market is still a large part of the mobile phone industry in India. Second, tapping into that nostalgia helps consumers make an instant connection. Third, according to a CMR report released last week, mobile audio is more important to the consumer than cameras. Fourth, a lot of people are still buying their first ever mobile phone and don’t want to spend a whole lot of dough.&nbsp;

With all this in mind, let’s bring it back to the choices Nokia has made in 2020. The Nokia 5310 comes with a 2.4-inch QVGA display, 8MB RAM, 16MB internal storage (expandable to 32GB via microSD card), a 1,200mAh battery, a VGA camera, dual-front speakers and the most-loved feature, the FM radio.&nbsp;

The camera could have been slightly better and maybe a sharper display, but beyond that, you can’t really fault HMD. With a device this side and a price point palatable for most of the population, there really was not a lot of wriggle room for HMD. There’s also the removable battery that we all miss and the small form factor we certainly loved.&nbsp;

Where you can fault HMD is in the choice of connectivity. In a world of WhatsApp, Facebook and YouTube, the least Nokia could have included is 3G, let alone 4G - the standard offering in 2020. Furthermore, unlike Reliance’s Jio Phone 2, there is no Wi-Fi functionality.&nbsp;

With limited capabilities on the Nokia 5310, one struggles to find a reason to think this feature phone will fly off the shelves (virtual, these days, brought to us by the coronavirus pandemic).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Industry analysts will also wrestle with the mere existence of the Nokia 5310. It’s a refurbished device from 2007. It isn’t particularly new or earth-shattering. The competition will easily take it out with feature phones that have beefier specs and cheaper price points.&nbsp;

Still, the omissions made by HMD Global don’t sync up with today’s consumer demands. Shopkeepers across the country (whenever they finally open up) will be struggling to find reasons to pitch this to the influx of customers into their stories.&nbsp;

Nokia 5310 redux: A glorified MP3 player or just another feature phone in a crowded market?

Nokia last week suspended operations at a telecoms gear manufacturing plant in southern India, the company said on Tuesday, after some employees tested positive for COVID-19.

Lundmark has also served as CEO of Konecranes, a global material-handling technology leader. Prior to that, from 1990-2000, he held various executive positions at Nokia, including the vice president of strategy and business development at Nokia Networks.

Lundmark also has "extensive experience in China," he told a press conference on Monday a market which Nokia last year announced it was backing away from in the light of growing support there for local vendors.

Haas hoped that&nbsp;Nokia&nbsp;and&nbsp;Huawei&nbsp;would build the&nbsp;Telefonica&nbsp;Deutschland&nbsp;5G&nbsp;Radio Access&nbsp;Network&nbsp;on a 50-50 basis, but cautioned that this would be subject to receiving the necessary certification in Germany.

Work should start in early 2020, and&nbsp;Telefonica&nbsp;Deutschland&nbsp;said it expected to have&nbsp;5G&nbsp;up and running in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, and Frankfurt by the end of 2021. A year later, 30 cities with a population of 16 million would be covered.

A decision on picking suppliers of its more sensitive 'core'&nbsp;network&nbsp;would be taken next year, Haas said.

The company, which is holding an investor briefing in London later, said it would cut its 2019 dividend to 0.17 euro ($0.19) from 0.27 euros.

This would become a new floor over the next three years, during which it expects cumulative revenue growth of at least 5 per cent, while the ratio of capital investment to sales will peak at 17-18 per cent before normalising.

"We believe the announcement is worse than anticipated," analysts at Citi said in a research note. "A dividend cut and a CAPEX increase was expected, though the magnitude is above ours and market expectations."

Blacklisted Chinese telecoms equipment giant Huawei is in early-stage talks with some US&nbsp;telecoms companies about licensing its 5G network technology to them, a Huawei executive told Reuters on Friday.

Vincent Pang, senior vice president and board director at the company said some firms had expressed interest in both a long-term deal or a one-off transfer, declining to name or quantify the companies.

"There are some companies talking to us, but it would take a long journey to really finalise everything," Pang explained on a visit to Washington this week. "They have shown interest," he added, saying conversations are only a couple of weeks old and not at a detailed level yet.

The US&nbsp;government, fearing Huawei equipment could be used to spy on customers, has led a campaign to convince allies to bar it from their 5G networks. Huawei has repeatedly denied the claim.

Currently, there are no US&nbsp;5G providers and European rivals Ericsson and Nokia are generally more expensive.

In May, Huawei, the world's largest telecoms equipment provider, was placed on a US&nbsp;blacklist over national security concerns, banning it from buying American-made parts without a special license.

Washington also has brought criminal charges against the company, alleging bank fraud, violations of US&nbsp;sanctions against Iran, and theft of trade secrets, which Huawei denies.

Rules that were due out from the Commerce Department earlier this month are expected to effectively ban the company from the US&nbsp;telecoms supply chain.

The idea of a one-off fee in exchange for access to Huawei's 5G patents, licenses, code and know-how was first floated by CEO and founder Ren Zhengfei in interviews with the New York Times and the Economist last month. But it was not previously clear whether there was any interest from US&nbsp;companies.

In an interview with Reuters last month, a State Department official expressed scepticism of Ren's offer.

"It's just not realistic that carriers would take on this equipment and then manage all of the software and hardware themselves," the person said. "If there are software bugs that are built into the initial software, there would be no way to necessarily tell that those are there and they could be activated at any point, even if the software code is turned over to the mobile operators," the official added.

For his part, Pang declined to predict whether any deal might be signed. However, he warned that the research and development investment required by continuously improving the platform after a single-transfer from Huawei would be very costly for the companies.

Huawei has spent billions to develop its 5G technology since 2009.

The idea of a one-off fee in exchange for access to Huawei's 5G patents, licenses, code and know-how was first floated by CEO and founder Ren Zhengfei in interviews with the New York Times and the Economist last month. But it was not previously clear whether there was any interest from US companies. In an interview with Reuters last month, a State Department official expressed scepticism of Ren's offer. "It's just not realistic that carriers would take on this equipment and then manage all of the software and hardware themselves," the person said. "If there are software bugs that are built into the initial software, there would be no way to necessarily tell that those are there and they could be activated at any point, even if the software code is turned over to the mobile operators," the official added. For his part, Pang declined to predict whether any deal might be signed. However, he warned that the research and development investment required by continuously improving the platform after a single-transfer from Huawei would be very costly for the companies. According to IPlytics, an intellectual property analysis service, China held the largest number of patents in 5G as of March this year, accounting for a third of the world's total, followed by South Korea, the US, and Finland.

The ban, which has prevented ZTE from buying the US&nbsp;components it relies on to make smartphones and other devices, will not be lifted until ZTE pays a fine and places $400 million more in an escrow account in a US-approved bank. It was also ordered to radically overhaul its management.

"While the nightmare is now over, ZTE will likely have to deal with many changes," Jeffries said in a research report, adding that it expects significant near-term selling pressure on the company's shares.

Confirming details of the US&nbsp;deal, ZTE said late&nbsp;on Tuesday&nbsp;it would replace its board of directors and that of its import-export subsidiary ZTE Kangxun&nbsp;within 30 days&nbsp;of the June 8 order being signed by the United States.

All members of its leadership at or above the senior vice president level would be removed within the 30-day period, with a commitment that they would not be re-hired, along with any executives or officers tied to the wrongdoing, it said.

The US&nbsp;commerce department can exercise discretion in granting exceptions.

According to a Reuters estimate based on company filings and a source with knowledge of the matter, that could result in about 40 senior executives being replaced including its 14-person board, based on its current management structure.

ZTE has more than a dozen senior vice presidents, which is a level below executive vice president, said the company source who declined to be identified as they were not authorised to speak to the media.

As part of the US&nbsp;order, the Commerce Department also will select a monitor, known as a special compliance coordinator,&nbsp;within 30 days&nbsp;to report on compliance by ZTE and its affiliates worldwide for 10 years. The coordinator will have a staff of at least six employees funded by ZTE.

"The compliance monitor will be on the same level as ZTE's CEO and board on compliance matters. The new governance structure will pose challenges for the company's management in the future," Zhongtai Securities said in a note.

Shares plunge

The Hong Kong-listed shares of ZTE slid as much as 41 per cent to HK$14.98, their lowest in a year, following a two-month trading suspension. Its Shenzhen shares fell by their 10 per cent limit to 28.18 yuan after it confirmed details of the agreement publicised by the US&nbsp;government&nbsp;on Monday.

Hong Kong's benchmark Hang Seng index was down 0.6 per cent by the midday break.

During its trading halt, fund managers cut their valuations of ZTE shares, with some lowering valuations of its A-shares to 20.04 yuan per share, or a 36 per cent discount to the closing level on&nbsp;April 16.

ZTE also said in filings&nbsp;on Tuesday&nbsp;that it would work to resume operations as soon as possible after the ban gets lifted, and would republish its first-quarter financial results after assessing the impact of the ban and the settlement agreement.

Jeffries said it expected ZTE to pay its penalty in a few days and resume operations next week.

Neil also got an operation done in 2001 after which he got deaf in one year eventually leading him to leave his job.

According to reports he also claimed in his lawsuit that he often&nbsp;noticed heat coming from his phone. Neil has claimed that a tumour became as big as golf ball due to which his inner ear organs had to be removed following which&nbsp;he is can't even wear a hearing aid.

Neil used to have Nokia 5510 and a team of experts is carrying out radiation tests on various phones including Niel's Nokia 5510.

Media reports quoted Neil saying that he filed this suit for the betterment of his children and future generations.

Coming amid the long-running reports stating mobile use can cause cancer, Neil's lawsuit has triggered a fear for other mobile companies as well as many others can also be encouraged by this to file a similar lawsuit.

It was hailed as a precious chance to stabilise one of the world&#39;s most volatile and poorest countries.

Under the agreement, armed groups were granted political representation in exchange for an end to attacks and blockades.

However, intense shooting began in the early hours of Tuesday morning, with dozens taken to hospital suffering from bullet wounds, Mumuza Muhindo Musubaho, project coordinator for Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in the CAR town of Bria, said in a statement.

As of 2100 GMT, 43 people were injured, according to the charity.

After making Indian consumers wait for several years, Nokia-branded Android phones have finally made their way to the country. While Nokia&rsquo;s comeback to India have left many excited and nostalgic, there is a notion held by others that it&rsquo;s too late for Nokia phones to fight a battle in the crowded and competitive Indian smartphone market.

So, to understand Nokia&rsquo;s positioning and strategy better, we caught hold of Pranav Shroff, director, global portfolio strategy, HMD Global - the maker of new Nokia phones. Pranav is not only confident of the re-entry to India, but he also explains WION that why it&rsquo;s the right time for Nokia to enter the Android space and how the company aims to bring Nokia-branded Android phones on top of the game.

WION: HMD struck a licensing deal with Nokia last year. How did it occur to have an arrangement with a company that had almost disappeared from the market?

Pranav: So, actually, Nokia as a brand is the pioneer in the mobile world. Nokia is also a brand which even today enjoys over 95 per cent brand awareness, globally. And in markets like India, it actually enjoys 100 per cent brand awareness. Nokia is actually a very strong brand and we at HMD Global are very proud to associate with that.

WION: Nokia had always abstained from Android. So, why did you plan to come up with Android-based Nokia phones? What actually prompted HMD to take that move?

Pranav: So at HMD, everything that we do actually revolves around consumers. So we keep the consumer at the centre of it and think about it from the consumer point of view. And actually, Android was an obvious choice. An overwhelming majority of consumers in India and globally has picked Android as their platform of choice. And we want to make sure that we deliver to consumers what they ask for. And therefore, Android was an obvious choice for us.

WION: Nokia 3 and Nokia 5 are offline exclusive, while the Nokia 6 is an online-exclusive with Amazon. Could you please shed some light on your business model?

Pranav: So the business model of HMD Global, overall, centres around partnerships. So let me break up partnerships as it is a huge term. On the technology front, we have partners like Google, Nokia and Qualcomm. Then if you look at the channel, since you are talking about online and offline, we have partnerships with 400+ distributors all over the country, who have actually signed on to become exclusive distributors of Nokia phones. We already have an existing retail reach of eighty thousand to hundred thousand outlets (currently into the feature phone business), which already enables for us.

At the same time, the consumer is everywhere. We want to make sure we are relevant and available for consumers who walk into our stores to purchase as well as go online to either research or to do their purchase. We will continue to make sure that Nokia product is available for all our consumers.

WION: Nokia 3, 5 and 6 are budget devices, what are your plans to compete in the high-end segment of the Android market?

Pranav: If you look at the Indian smartphone market, specifically, about 70 per cent of India actually buys in this segment. So, it&rsquo;s a segment (between Rs 10K-Rs 15K) where the belly of the Indian smartphone market exists. And that&rsquo;s why we wanted to start from here.

We have announced the Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and the Nokia 6, and I am not saying that we will limit ourselves to these price points. I would only say, stay tuned for more.

WION: So when can we get to see the next Nokia device and what kind of device it would be?

Pranav: We are working at breakneck speed. So, stay tuned for more. But what I can tell you right now is that it will have the most stunning design and materials, it will come with pure Android, which is secure and always up-to-date, and it will always focus on real-life experiences what matter to consumers.

WION: Given that Nokia is a late entrant to the Android market, how are you going to compete against rivals?

Pranav: In a sense, the time is actually very right for us to enter the Android market. Because what consumers have been telling us is that they are missing a point of view. There is a sea of undifferentiated products from different companies, who tend to offer bigger or faster, which are not necessarily better. And having learnt this from consumers and coming with a heritage that we have with the Nokia brand, we believe that we will differentiate and stand apart on these three aspects.

Number 1, we will always have the most premium design in any price-tier we operate in. Number 2, we will always focus on what matters to consumers, which means we will give the right specifications. But we will not stop at just the specifications. We will optimise to ensure that the experience delivers. And number 3, consumers ask us for a simple, fast and an easy-to-use user experience, and we will give that with the pure Android experience. We will deliver security updates which Google releases regularly. Because we believe that the consumer trust is something that we will never take lightly and that is something we have earned over the years. And the security features that we will offer will continue to reinforce the trust that consumers have in us. Also, we will keep the OS up-to-date. So, these are the three pillars of our product philosophy that will help us differentiate from anything else out there.

WION: HMD Global says that Nokia phones sold in India will be made in India. What is your overall strategy when it comes to the Make in India initiative?

Pranav: All the four phones announced by us - Nokia 3,5, 6 and the Nokia 3310 - are made in India. So from day 1, the critical aspects of the consumer experience in our long association in this industry are the manufacturing, and therefore, the pricing of the products. Number 2 is the customer care and the after-sales support. And number 3 is the availability. And all of these three blocks have been thought through really well with a lot of effort being put in. So, we ensure that we are making for India. So, it&rsquo;s made in India from the very first devices that you get. Also, it enables us to have these products at fantastic prices.

WION: So have new manufacturing facilities been set up only to produce Nokia phones, or are the devices being made at Foxconn facilities in India?

Pranav: So, the manufacturing for us is done by Foxconn. And Foxconn then chooses to decide the manufacturing. What I can tell you at this point is that they are made in India by Foxconn.

WION: What are your future plans for India as well for the global market?

Pranav: So as you have already seen from our momentum, we have been working at a very fast pace to bring a lot of devices. I can only say again watch out for more. We will keep coming back to surprise you.

Because what consumers have been telling us is that they are missing a point of view. There is a sea of undifferentiated products from different companies, who tend to offer bigger or faster, which are not necessarily better. And having learnt this from consumers and coming with a heritage that we have with the Nokia brand, we believe that we will differentiate and stand apart on these three aspects. Number 1, we will always have the most premium design in any price-tier we operate in. Number 2, we will always focus on what matters to consumers, which means we will give the right specifications. But we will not stop at just the specifications. We will optimise to ensure that the experience delivers. And number 3, consumers ask us for a simple, fast and an easy-to-use user experience, and we will give that with the pure Android experience. We will deliver security updates which Google releases regularly. Because we believe that the consumer trust is something that we will never take lightly and that is something we have earned over the years. And the security features that we will offer will continue to reinforce the trust that consumers have in us. Also, we will keep the OS up-to-date. So, these are the three pillars of our product philosophy that will help us differentiate from anything else out there. WION: HMD Global says that Nokia phones sold in India will be made in India. What is your overall strategy when it comes to the Make in India initiative? Pranav: All the four phones announced by us - Nokia 3,5, 6 and the Nokia 3310 - are made in India. So from day 1, the critical aspects of the consumer experience in our long association in this industry are the manufacturing, and therefore, the pricing of the products. Number 2 is the customer care and the after-sales support. And number 3 is the availability. And all of these three blocks have been thought through really well with a lot of effort being put in. So, we ensure that we are making for India. So, it’s made in India from the very first devices that you get. Also, it enables us to have these products at fantastic prices. WION: So have new manufacturing facilities been set up only to produce Nokia phones, or are the devices being made at Foxconn facilities in India? Pranav: So, the manufacturing for us is done by Foxconn. And Foxconn then chooses to decide the manufacturing. What I can tell you at this point is that they are made in India by Foxconn. WION: What are your future plans for India as well for the global market? Pranav: So as you have already seen from our momentum, we have been working at a very fast pace to bring a lot of devices.
