Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 to be launched in India on June 13

Apple has settled a patent dispute with Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia and agreed to buy more of its network products and services, sending Nokia shares up 7 per cent.

The deal means Nokia will get bigger royalties from Apple for using its mobile phone patents, helping offset the impact of waning demand for its mobile network hardware.

Such legal battles are common in the industry but can drag on for years and analysts had not been expecting such a quick resolution to the dispute that started in December.

Under the deal announced in a joint statement from the companies on Tuesday, Nokia will also supply network infrastructure products to Apple, and Apple will resume sales of Nokia's digital health products in retail and online stores and look at further collaboration in health.

Digital health is one of the areas Nokia is targeting as it tries to develop new businesses to offset the industry-wide slump in demand for network equipment. Last year, Nokia bought France's Withings S.A., a small firm with products such as activity trackers and baby monitors built on digital platforms.

"There could emerge big future value from this as Apple could become an important distribution channel," said Handelsbanken analyst Daniel Djurberg, who has an "accumulate" recommendation for Nokia shares.

"I have not given any value so far for Nokia's digital health business, but might apply an option value to it."

Indutrial deal

Nokia Chief Executive Rajeev Suri told the company's annual general meeting later on Tuesday that the deal would help expand network sales beyond telecom operators to global internet and technology giants.

"(The deal) involves a business collaboration ... in particular in areas of IP and optical equipment, which is quite key to webscale players when they build their data centers," he said. "It's a good deal, a multi-year licensing deal, and I love it that it has an industrial deal and aspect to it."

Under the patent license agreement, Nokia will receive a "significant" upfront cash payment and additional revenues from Apple starting from the current quarter. The companies did not give further details but analysts said the revenue was likely to be far higher than a previous deal.

Inge Heydorn, fund manager at Sentat Asset Management, said it was a smart move to collaborate on digital health products.

"It's interesting for Nokia in a 5 to 10 year perspective since I think it will be hard to be profitable within mobile infrastructure," said Heydorn, whose firm does not hold any shares in Nokia.

Nokia shares, which fell in December when the patent dispute was announced, jumped to their highest since February 2016 and were up 6.7 per cent at 5.89 euros by 1509 GMT.

A previous patent license contract between the companies expired last year, and both sides took legal action in December. Apple complained of being overcharged and Nokia responded by accusing Apple of violating technology patents.

In the absence of a new deal, Nokia cut its annual run-rate forecast in December for patent and brand licensing sales to 800 million euros ($900 million) from 950 million euros ($1000 million) previously. In its latest quarterly report released in April, Nokia stopped giving an annual run-rate forecast altogether.

"(The agreement) moves our relationship with Apple from being adversaries in court to business partners," Nokia's Chief Legal Officer Maria Varsellona said in a statement.

Quick resolution

Analysts were surprised by the relatively quick resolution of the dispute between Apple and Nokia.

"Nokia told analysts in April don't calculate on any license revenue from Apple, not even in 2018, so this is a positive surprise. It will also limit Nokia's legal expenses," said Djurberg who said he would probably raise his Nokia estimates.

"For Nokia, it's good news they got this out of the way, but we still have to wait for details about the financial impact," said OP Equities analyst Hannu Rauhala.

"The previous annual rate was 150 million euros ($167 million), so I assume this to be more, around 500 million euros ($558 million)."

Rauhala said Apple might have been willing to settle with Nokia as the US company's patent battle with chipmaker Qualcomm has escalated.

Patent royalties represent only a sliver of Nokia's overall revenue, more than 90 per cent of which comes from telecom network equipment. But licensing payments are highly profitable and the network business is suffering an industry-wide slump.

Nokia's patents cover technology that reduces the need for hardware components in a phone, conserves battery life, increases radio reception, helps in recovering lost phones and enables voice recognition, among other features.

Once the world's dominant cellphone maker, Nokia sold its handset business to Microsoft in 2014 to focus on its network business and large portfolio of mobile device patents.

Nokia's total sales in 2016 were about 24 billion euros ($27 billion).

Nokia is back, but now in an Android avatar

The internet is abuzz with reports claiming that the iconic Nokia 3310 is coming back. While there is no word on the same from HMD Global, the Finnish company that now owns the rights to use Nokia's brand on mobile phones, speculations are rife that the company will unveil the Nokia 3310 in a new avatar at Mobile World Congress 2017 in February.

But these are just rumours and may not turn out to be true, which means that you might miss a trip down memory lane with the new Nokia 3310 - something that many of you have been wishing to embark on ever since its comeback was reported by famous tipster Evan Blass.

We are not sure if the new Nokia 3310 would see the light of day and make you relive your old memories, but we are certain that the text from over-a-decade-old press release of the Nokia 3310 will definitely take you back in time.

It is not only reminiscent of those frequently-exchanged text messages, which eventually would lead to the removal of ink from buttons, but will also remind you of the phone’s sturdy build and long battery life.

Here’s the full text from the press release:

Nokia introduces mobile chat with the Nokia 3310

Nokia has today announced a new mobile phone, the Nokia 3310, with a unique chat function, allowing users to chat with text messages on their phones while on the move. With this innovation, Internet chat groups will no longer be confined to the desktop. The Nokia 3310 has been designed particularly for young people and the young at heart, for whom the mobile phone is an important lifestyle accessory and who are already extensively using various messaging services. The Nokia 3310 was unveiled at the "Don't be bored. Be totally board." lifestyle event in Oberhausen, Germany, on September 1. In Asia Pacific, the Nokia 3310 was simultaneously launched at "Nokia Unplugged" concerts held in Hong Kong, Manila, Philippines, and Cheng Du, China. The product will be available in the 4th quarter, 2000.

The chat function allows you to have a conversation, similar to the chat services on the Internet, with the other party by using short messages. The chat feature is based on enhanced SMS messaging in which you can send and receive chat messages when the Nokia 3310 is in chat mode. With the Nokia 3310, it is possible to send a chat message even to a phone that does not have the chat functionality since the messaging channel is the normal SMS. The message is then received in the form of an SMS.

Mobile chat is fast, easy, and even anonymous if you so choose. When the phone is in chat mode, you can automatically send and receive chat messages. The messaging functionality has an easy-to-scroll chat history on your phone screen, and all messages are identified by the given chat nickname. You can give yourself your own nickname with which your message is sent to the recipient. The phone supports point-to-point chat between two persons, and with the operator-dependent Nokia FriendsTalk service also launched today, it is possible to engage in multipoint chat with several people simultaneously.

"We are very pleased to announce an innovation that represents the next wave in messaging services. Mobile chat is a logical evolution of SMS based services. This chat application will allow the formation of entirely new types of mobile communities. The chat function will appeal to the needs of today's trendy users, who will now be able to take their chat rooms with them wherever they go. For operators, mobile chat offers the combined advantage of a hit service and a future-proof growth path," said Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe and Africa.

The new phone is small and slim, weighing only 133 grams. Despite its small size, it offers users an extensive array of features. In addition to the new chat function, templates allow you to build personalized standard messages. Concatenated messaging enables you to type longer messages - the Nokia 3310 automatically connects up to three messages together making the message nearly three times longer than normal SMS messages. The multiple send feature of the Nokia 3310 makes it possible to send a message to multiple recipients. With the Nokia 3310 it is also possible to send picture messages to other picture message-enabled Nokia phones. Other attractions are the new games, Space Impact and Bantumi, and full editable profiles that are downloadable over the air, consisting of a screensaver, a ringing tone, and a profile name.

The Nokia 3310 is equipped with the Nokia Navi? Key, the famous innovation enabling easy access to phone features. A sensitive built-in antenna makes the phone convenient to carry and use. The GSM 900/1800 phone also operates on EGSM (Extended GSM) 900 networks, which allows operators with access to this bandwidth to expand network capacity. The standard NiMH battery provides up to 4 hours and 30 minutes of talk time and up to 260 hours of standby time. Xpress-on front and back covers are available in 6 different colors. Accessories include a new Mobile Holder for the car (MBC-6) and a new Desktop Stand (DVC-10). The phone supports 28 language options. Language availability depends on where the phone is sold.

Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. The company is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, broadband and IP networks, related services as well as multimedia terminals. In 1999, Nokia's net sales totaled EUR 19.8 billion (USD 19.9 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 60 000 people.

It is still unknown if HMD will unveil the new Nokia 3310 at its press conference on February 26 in Barcelona. But, certainly, we won’t stay away from bringing you the good news if the phone hits the store shelves again.

The Finnish network equipment maker said the move aims at building "a standalone software business at scale"

The Finnish mobile phone and network equipment maker Nokia has all intentions to buy Comptel for nearly 370 million USD. The move aims at expanding Nokia's software services business. Comptel is a company specialised in in building software-based mobile data communications solutions. Last year Nokia bough Franco-American group Alcatel-Lucent in a nearly 16.7 billion USD all-share deal and is cutting thousands of jobs in order to reduce annual costs by 1.3 billion USD by 2018. Mobile telecom gear maker Ericsson forecast a third consecutive year of comparable sales declines on Tuesday, saying it would step up cost cuts in the face of deteriorating market conditions after its results fell short of market expectations.

With demand stagnating in developed markets where the newest networks have mostly already been built, Ericsson is now feeling an additional pinch from lower spending in countries such as Russia, Brazil, the Middle East and Nigeria, hit by weaker currencies and low oil prices.

"This has become even more pronounced during the second quarter, so it has impacted the investment levels at the operators, and that hits the mobile broadband market," stated Ericsson Chief Financial Officer Jan Frykhammar.

"So that is the most important trend."

For the past couple of years, Ericsson has been forced to cut its outlook for market growth, weighed down by sluggish demand for its core mobile network base stations. It also has a weaker position than rivals Nokia and Huawei in faster growing areas such IP-based communication.

To offset the shrinking market for mobile infrastructure, Ericsson is investing in new areas to grow sales, such as IP- and cloud-based communication, but so far these are not growing fast enough to compensate.

Like-for-like sales dropped by 7 percent in the quarter, the seventh in a row of declining underlying sales, though CEO Hans Vestberg told a conference call it didn't appear that Ericsson was losing market share. In 2015, group sales fell 5 percent on a comparable basis after declining 2 percent in 2014.

"The current sales trends and business mix are expected to prevail for the second half of the year," Ericsson said in a statement.

Cost reduction plan could have far-reaching affects

Operating profit was 2.8 billion Swedish crowns ($327 million) compared with 3.6 billion a year-ago, weighed down by its networks divisions and below a mean forecast of 3.0 billion crowns.

Ericsson said it would roughly double cuts in operating expenses to adapt to a weaker market, meaning annual savings of some 10 billion Swedish crowns from the second half of 2017 compared to 2014, adding that a previously announced cost savings programme was going according to plan.

Ericsson's beaten-down shares, which dropped 15 percent in a single day in April after weak results, slipped 1 percent to 63.70 crowns.

"While Ericsson seems to be more serious now about its cost reduction efforts, it seems to be chasing a bit of a moving target," Liberum said in a note to clients.

"The cost reduction plan is expected to show some results which should lead to higher operating margins, though the extent is difficult to predict."

Ericsson did not say how planned cost cuts would affect jobs but said almost 4,000 employees had left during the quarter though an acquisition had contributed to a net increase in staff. Ericsson employed 116,507 people by June 30, versus 115,300 by the end of the first quarter.
