Fosse’s greatest achievement as a writer in prose which was described by Anders Olsson, chair of the Nobel literature committee, as “magnum opus” was “A New Name: Septology VI-VII”.&nbsp;

The Swedish academy has also noted that while Fosse “shares the negative outlook of his predecessors his gnostic vision cannot be said to result in a nihilistic contempt of the world.”&nbsp;

It added, “Indeed, there is great warmth and humour in his work, and a naïve vulnerability to his stark images of human experience.”

The Nobel prize body also noted that Fosse writes novels heavily pared down to a style that has come to be known as ‘Fosse minimalism,’ an example of which was seen in his second novel ‘Stengd gitar’ (1985) where he presents everyday situations that are instantly recognisable from our own lives.

“Fosse blends a rootedness in the language and nature of his Norwegian background, with artistic techniques in the wake of modernism,” said Olsson.&nbsp;

He also combines strong local ties, both linguistic and geographic, with modernist artistic techniques, the Swedish academy has said.&nbsp;

Fosse writes in a language known as “new Norwegian” which is said to be the least common of the two official versions of Norwegian which is only used by 10 per cent of the country’s population.&nbsp;

While speaking to Reuters, the 64-year-old said that he regarded the award as a recognition of this language and the movement promoting it and he ultimately owed the prize to the language itself.&nbsp;

Notably, the version of the language that Fosse uses was developed in the 19th century with rural dialects at its base, according to Reuters.&nbsp;

Vidar Helgesen, who is the executive director of the Nobel Foundation, said in a statement on Thursday, "It is clear that the world is increasingly divided into spheres, where dialogue between those with differing views is being reduced".&nbsp;

"To counter this tendency, we are now broadening our invitations to celebrate and understand the Nobel Prize and the importance of free science, free culture and free, peaceful societies," Helgesen added.&nbsp;

Rao's first jobs were in Cambridge at the Anthropological Museum and the Indian Statistical Institute. He held a number of significant positions, including those of director of the Indian Statistical Institute, Jawaharlal Nehru Professor and National Professor in India, University Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, and Eberly Professor and Chair of Statistics and Director of the Center for Multivariate Analysis at Pennsylvania State University.

He is presently a research professor at the University at Buffalo and a professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University. Over the years,&nbsp;Rao has received&nbsp;several awards which honoured his work. The Indian government conferred on him the titles of Padma Bhushan in 1968 and Padma Vibhushan in 2001.

Indian-origin mathematician CR Rao honoured with math ‘Nobel Prize’

A criminal case has been opened by the Russian authorities on Tuesday against Oleg Orlov, the co-chair of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning civil rights group Memorial, for "discrediting" the army. The group received the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize with Belarus's jailed activist Ales Bialiatski and Ukraine's Centre for Civil Liberties.

The move came after the sweeping raids against the group's members, including 69-year-old Orlov and co-founder Yan Rachinsky, 64. Moscow Times reported that if convicted, Orlov faces up to three years in prison.&nbsp;

Memorial said on its Telegram channel that Orlov has been charged with repeatedly violating Russia's law, which was passed last March and effectively outlaws criticism of the invasion of Ukraine. The group said, "A case was launched against Orlov." &nbsp;

The question - “Can we buy happiness with money?” - has remained unanswered even though many social scientists and economists have been tempted to solve the puzzle.

Recently, a fresh answer has come out in a new study according to which happiness increases with growth in earnings and income, as per a report published in The Washington Post.

The study is based on research conducted by Nobel Prize-winning economist Daniel Kahneman along with Princeton University's Matthew Killingsworth who performed number crunching to reach this conclusion, the outlet further stated.

The result of the study contradicts research conducted in 2010 which stated that money can only boost happiness to a certain point, which was estimated to be about $75,000 in annual earnings.

Kahneman was among the two authors who had conducted the earlier study. The study became so popular that the founder of a credit card company raised his employees' minimum salaries to $70,000 by taking a cut in his own salary to do so.

The recent study was published this month in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, according to the Washington Post report.

Around 33,391 people, living in the US and between the age of 18 and 65, were surveyed by the two researchers. The people surveyed had a household income of a minimum of $10,000 a year.

As per the outlet, the responses about people's feelings at various intervals were recorded through a smartphone application by the researchers. The responses of people ranged from "very bad" to "very good".

CBS News stated that the study reached two major conclusions. One conclusion was that happiness does increase with growth in earnings up to $500,000 a year and the other conclusion was that a group of people exist for whom higher incomes do not create much of a difference.

This "unhappy group" comprised around 15 per cent of people, said the outlet further citing the study.

However, Killingsworth, in a statement, cautioned that money isn't everything. "Just one of the many determinants of happiness. Money is not the secret to happiness, but it can probably help a bit,” he stated.

He has reportedly been questioned in the past several weeks by the Title IX office at Washington University in St. Louis, his lawyer Andrew Miltenberg was quoted as saying by Associated Press.

Miltenberg said the allegations are "factually inaccurate".&nbsp;

Bloomberg reported that it has reviewed emails that show that the Title IX office of Washington University, which handles campus sexual harassment complaints, has reached out to at least three former students since October to interview them about claims. They are among seven former students who have alleged that Dybvig sexually harassed them.

Dybvig, fellow US economist Douglas W Diamond and former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke won the Nobel Prize in economics in October for research into bank failures. This work was built on the findings from the Great Depression and helped shape the US' response to the 2007-2008 financial crisis.&nbsp;

The findings in the early 1980s laid the foundations for regulating financial markets, the Nobel panel had found.

Nobel Committee takes note

Tore Ellingsen, chair of the Nobel's Economic Sciences Prize Committee, told Bloomberg that the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has contacted the university to make sure they had a fair process to handle the accusations.

"As long as the university has not determined that Dybvig has done something wrong, I think we owe him an untarnished celebration of his achievement,"&nbsp;Ellingsen was quoted as saying by Bloomberg.

Miltenberg, Dybvig's lawyer said he was suspicious of the timing of the allegations, adding that they surfaced after the award was announced but before the scheduled award ceremony.

"We believe that this is a situation of professional rivalry."

At a formal ceremony in Stockholm on December 10, Ernaux will receive the Nobel from King Carl XVI Gustaf.

The day will also mark the anniversary of the 1896 death of scientist Alfred Nobel who created the prizes in his last will and testament.&nbsp;

French author Annie Ernaux wins Nobel Literature Prize

Three scientists from the United States and Denmark who built the framework for a more practical kind of chemistry were given the Nobel Prize in Chemistry on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The judges awarded Morten Meldal of Denmark, Carolyn Bertozzi, and Barry Sharpless of America "for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry."&nbsp;

For 81-year-old Sharpless, who earned the chemistry Nobel in 2001, it was his second Nobel.&nbsp;Only four other people, including the Frenchwoman Marie Curie who was born in Poland, have accomplished this&nbsp;accomplishment.&nbsp; 
 
Sharpless joins an elite band of scientists,&nbsp;including John Bardeen who won the Physics prize twice, Marie Curie, who won Physics and Chemistry, Linus Pauling who won Chemistry and Peace and Frederick Sanger who won the Chemistry prize twice.

The jury stated in a statement that it "is an elegant and efficient chemical reaction that is now in widespread use."&nbsp;

Didier Queloz was born in Switzerland and studied at the University of Geneva, where he also received a doctorate in 1995. In the same year, Queloz and his supervisor Michel Mayor announced the first discovery of a planet outside our solar system, an exoplanet, orbiting a solar-type star in our home galaxy, the Milky Way. Using custom-made instruments, they were able to see planet '51 Pegasi b', in the Pegasus constellation and this work earned them the Nobel Prize in 2019. Since then, over 4,000 exoplanets have since been found in the Milky Way. Eventually, such studies may find an answer to the eternal question of whether other life exists out there. Frenchman Alain Aspect, American John F. Clauser and Austrian Anton Zeilinger were cited by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for discovering the way that particles known as photons can be linked, or “entangled,” with each other even when they are separated by large distances.

“Quantum information science is a vibrant and rapidly developing field,” said Eva Olsson, a member of the Nobel committee. “It has broad and potential implications in areas such as secure information transfer, quantum computing and sensing technology."

“Its origin can be traced to that of quantum mechanics,” she said. “Its predictions have opened doors to another world, and it has also shaken the very foundations of how we interpret measurements.”

Speaking by phone at a news conference after the announcement, Zeilinger said he was “still kind of shocked” at hearing he had received the award.

“But it’s a very positive shock,” said Zeilinger, 77, who is based at the University of Vienna.

Clauser, Aspect, and Zeilinger have figured in Nobel speculation for more than a decade. In 2010 they won the Wolf Prize in Israel, seen as a possible precursor to the Nobel.

While physicists often tackle problems that appear at first glance to be far removed from everyday concerns - tiny particles and the vast mysteries of space and time - their research provides the foundations for many practical applications of science.

The Nobel committee said Clauser, 79, developed quantum theories first put forward in the 1960s into a practical experiment. Aspect, 75, was able to close a loophole in those theories, while Zeilinger demonstrated a phenomenon called quantum teleportation that effectively allows information to be transmitted over distances.

“Using entanglement you can transfer all the information which is carried by an object over to some other place where the object is, so to speak, reconstituted,” said Zeilinger. He added that this only works for tiny particles.

“It is not like in the Star Trek films (where one is) transporting something, certainly not the person, over some distance,” he said. When he began his research, Zeilinger said the experiments were “completely philosophical without any possible use or application.”

Since then, the laureates’ work has been used to develop the fields of quantum computers, quantum networks and secure quantum encrypted communication.

A week of Nobel Prize announcements kicked off Monday with Swedish scientist Svante Paabo receiving the award in medicine Monday for unlocking secrets of Neanderthal DNA that provided key insights into our immune system.

Muratov founded Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta and was heavily involved in it before it was shut down due to his criticism of the government. Muratov has already donated the $500,000 cash award that came with the Nobel Prize to charity and his aim “is to give the children refugees a chance for a future.”

Dhondup Wangchen, a Tibetan filmmaker and former political prisoner, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022.

Rasmus Hansson, a Green Party spokesperson and a biologist, nominated Wangchen, saying he represents "the memory of the Tibetans' obvious demands for human rights."

Wangchen met the Norwegian environmentalist in January during his campaign, during which he encouraged authorities to boycott the Beijing 2022 Olympics, which begin on Friday, according to Phayul.com.

In 2008, Chinese authorities imprisoned the 47-year-old Tibetan activist in Tibet for six years on charges of "subversion" for his documentary "Leaving Fear Behind," which he co-directed with Golog Jigme.

The film included interviews with regular Tibetans who expressed their perspectives on China's Summer Olympics and the CCP government's suppression of Tibetans.

After his release in 2014, Wangchen escaped Tibet and was granted refuge in the United States, where he has lived with his family since.&nbsp;

The self-taught filmmaker received the International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) in New York in 2012 for his brave portrayal of Tibetans suffering within Tibet.&nbsp;

Tibetan filmmaker who took on Chinese repression nominated for Nobel Peace Prize 2022

Charles Lieber, one of the country’s top research chemists, sat miserably in a chair at the Harvard Police Department, trying to explain to two FBI agents why he had agreed to partner with a lesser-known Chinese university in a relationship that had soured and landed him in trouble with the US government.

The university had money to spend — “that’s one of the things China uses to try to seduce people,” Lieber said in the interrogation, clips of which were shown in court.

But money was not the reason, he said. By training young scientists in the use of technology he had pioneered, he hoped to burnish his credentials with the committee that decides the ultimate scientific honour.

“This is embarrassing,” he said. “Every scientist wants to win a Nobel Prize.”

On Tuesday, after deliberating for two hours and 45 minutes, a federal jury found Lieber guilty of two counts of making false statements to the US government about whether he participated in the Thousand Talents Plan, a program designed by the Chinese government to attract foreign-educated scientists to China. They also found him guilty of failing to declare income earned in China and failing to report a Chinese bank account.

No date has been set for sentencing. A charge of making false statements carries a maximum sentence of five years. Lieber, who has cancer, sat expressionless through the six-day trial and said nothing as he left the courthouse with his wife.

Although it is not illegal to participate in Chinese recruitment programs, scientists are required to disclose their participation to the US government, which also funds their research and may view it as a conflict of interest.

Lieber’s conviction is a victory for the China Initiative, an effort begun in 2018 under the Trump administration, to root out scientists suspected of sharing sensitive information with China.

“Mr. Lieber exploited the openness and transparency of our academic system,” said Joseph Bonavolonta, who heads the Boston division of the FBI. “The FBI will not hesitate to work with our law enforcement partners to focus on those who put their financial and professional interests ahead of our country’s economic prosperity.”

Among the cases opened against academic researchers, most, like the case against Lieber, do not allege espionage or intellectual property theft, but failure to disclose Chinese funding, and the effort has been criticized for prosecutorial overreach.

He added, “No villains, no victims, no one got robbed, no one got rich, but over a few seconds of conversation — Special Agent Mousseau called it a blip on the radar — the world’s greatest nanoscientist is facing multiple felonies.”

Among the researchers prosecuted as part of the China Initiative, Lieber is by far the most prominent, chosen as chair of Harvard’s chemistry and chemical biology department and seen by some as a potential Nobel Prize winner.

This year's Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel or the Nobel Economics Prize has been awarded one half to David Card and the other half jointly to Joshua D. Angrist and Guido W. Imbens.

According to the Nobel committee's statement, this year’s Laureates were awarded for providing "new insights about the labour market and shown what conclusions about cause and effect can be drawn from natural experiments. The other half went jointly to Joshua D. Angrist, 61, an American, the Ford Professor of Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA and Guido W. Imbens, 58, from the Netherlands, the Applied Econometrics Professor and Professor of Economics, Stanford University, USA, "for their methodological contributions to the analysis of causal relationships."

This year's Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel or the Nobel Economics Prize has been awarded one half to David Card and the other half jointly to Joshua D. Angrist and Guido W. Imbens. According to the Nobel committee's statement, this year’s Laureates were awarded for providing "new insights about the labour market and shown what conclusions about cause and effect can be drawn from natural experiments. Their approach has spread to other fields and revolutionised empirical research." His work focuses on the effects of minimum wages, immigration, and education on the labour market. The other half went jointly to Joshua D. Angrist, 61, an American, the Ford Professor of Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA and Guido W. Imbens, 58, from the Netherlands, the Applied Econometrics Professor and Professor of Economics, Stanford University, USA, "for their methodological contributions to the analysis of causal relationships." They demonstrated how precise cause and effect conclusions can be.
