At the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony at Oslo City Hall, Norway, the prestigious award was presented to Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi, who is currently incarcerated in Tehran's Evin prison, on Sunday (Dec 12).&nbsp;In a speech delivered by her children, who accepted the award on her behalf, imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi denounced the 'tyrannical and anti-women religious' government of Iran.&nbsp;

Narges Mohammadi&nbsp;was represented by her family, including her husband Taghi Rahmani, who expressed their pride in being her voice.

Mohammadi, a vocal advocate against the compulsory hijab and the death penalty in Iran, has faced numerous arrests and convictions over the years. The honour was accepted on her behalf by her 17-year-old twins, Ali and Kiani Rahmani.

Ali Rahmani, ahead of the speech was "very, very optimistic" about meeting his mother one day. He said, "We are not nervous; we are very proud to be able to be the voice of our mother and do our best to move things forward. The prize will reinforce our determination to go to the end."&nbsp;

"The cause of 'Woman, Life, Freedom', freedom in general and democracy are worth sacrificing yourself for and giving your life for, because in the end these three things are priceless", said Kiana.&nbsp;"As for seeing her again one day, personally I'm rather pessimistic."&nbsp;

"Maybe I'll see her in 30 or 40 years but if not, I don't think I'll ever see her again. But that's OK because my mother will always be with me in my heart and with my family,"&nbsp;Kiana further said.

Meanwhile, in protest of the limitations on medical care and the compulsory veiling of women in Iran, Mohammadi initiated a hunger strike from her prison cell.

Her husband revealed her motivation, saying, "She said, 'I will start my hunger strike on the day that I am being granted this prize, perhaps then the world will hear more about it'."

Jailed Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi's family member stated that the activist has ended her hunger strike after she was allowed to get medical treatment without wearing the compulsory head covering. 
 
In a message shared on the activist's Instagram account on Thursday, family members of the activist said she was taken to a hospital for a medical examination on Wednesday (Nov 8). She is suffering from heart and lung conditions. 
 
"After being transferred to the hospital without wearing the compulsory hijab and returning to the women's ward, I ended my hunger strike," Mohammadi was quoted as saying in the press statement.

The 51-year-old veteran rights activist has been kept in Evin prison of Tehran. In October, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran".

<h2>Mohammadi's protest against hijab</h2>

On Monday, her family members stated that Mohammadi had started her hunger strike to protest against the limits imposed on medical care for her and other inmates and the compulsion that she and other women were facing to cover their hair in public in the Islamic republic. 
 
The friends and allies, who had collected to meet Mohammadi at the hospital, were "threatened and harassed by Islamic Republic Security forces," said her supporters on Thursday (Nov 9). 
 
Mohammadi has refused to wear a hijab, which is a head covering that has been made obligatory for women in public areas since the 1979 Islamic Revolution took place in Iran, under any circumstances. She further took the oath to continue to refuse to wear the headscarf.

The Nobel Prize for Economics Sciences 2023 has been awarded to American economic historian and professor Claudia Goldin&nbsp;on Monday (Oct 9) for her work in examining the wage inequality between men and women “through centuries,” said the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. &nbsp;

The prestigious award formally known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel was awarded to the 77-year-old Harvard professor, “for having advanced our understanding of women’s labour market outcomes.”&nbsp;

The award, worth&nbsp;11 million Swedish crowns ($999,137),&nbsp;marks the end of this year's Nobel Prizes season.

<h2>Nobel economics prize 2023</h2>

“This year’s Laureate in the Economic Sciences…provided the first comprehensive account of women’s earnings and labour market participation through the centuries,” said the award-giving body, in a statement.&nbsp;

It added, “Her research reveals the causes of change, as well as the main sources of the remaining gender gap.”&nbsp;

Goldin is only the third woman,&nbsp;after Elinor Ostrom (2009) and Esther Duflo (2019),&nbsp;to win the Nobel economics prize. Speaking about her reaction, Hans Ellegren, Secretary General of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, said “She was surprised and very, very happy.”

<h2>Goldin’s work</h2>

In 1990, Goldin also became the first woman to be tenured at the Harvard economics department. Her book “Understanding the Gender Gap: An Economic History of American Women,” was a significantly influential examination of the roots of wage inequality.

Through her work, she has noted how female participation in the labour market did not have an upward trend, as many may have expected but rather over a 200-year period it is a U-shaped curve.&nbsp;

Goldin also showed the impact of the contraceptive pill on women’s career and marriage decisions and even their surname changes as social indicators and the reasons why women are now the majority of undergraduates.

Goldin has “trawled the archives and collected over 200 years of data from the US,” said the jury.&nbsp;

“She studied something that many people, many historians, for instance, simply decided not to study before because they didn’t think these data existed,” said Nobel committee member Randi Hjalmarsson, and called her “a detective”.&nbsp;

“Thanks to Claudia Goldin’s groundbreaking research we now know much more about the underlying factors and which barriers may need to be addressed in the future,” Jakob Svensson, chair of the committee for the prize in economic sciences, said in a statement.

<h2>Controversy surrounding the prize</h2>

While the prize is arguably the most prestigious award in the field of economics, it is not without controversy.&nbsp;

Over the years, many people have questioned the validity of the Nobel Prize itself since it was not one of the original prizes created at Alfred Nobel’s will but was a later addition established and funded by Sweden’s central bank in 1968.

In May 2016, she was sentenced in Tehran to 16 years in prison for her role in running "a human rights movement that campaigns for the abolition of death penalty".

While imprisoned at Tehran's&nbsp;Evin prison, the 51-year-old mother of two became the 2023 Nobel peace laureate "for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all" on October 6.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee described Mohammadi's struggle for human rights in Iran as an uphill battle that has "come with tremendous personal costs".

"This is a mother who has spent more time in the notorious Evin prison than with her two children and husband," Ali Vaez, Director of Iran Project and Senior Adviser to the President of Crisis Group told WION.&nbsp;

Located in the Evin neighbourhood of the Iranian capital&nbsp;Tehran, the facility has been the primary site for imprisoning Iran's political prisoners since 1972, before and after the Islamic Revolution.

Tehran has been accused of keeping the Evin Prison as a&nbsp;site of "serious human rights abuses" against political dissidents and critics of the regime.

Narges Mohammedi had been the vice president of Defenders of Human Rights Center, which remains shut down since December 2008 after being banned by Tehran. Ebadi, who has lived in exile in London since 2009, was the first Muslim woman and the first Iranian to receive the award.

While the recognition of Narges' struggles for women's rights with the coveted Nobel increases the political cost of repression for the Iranian regime, it is unlikely to dissuade Tehran from pursuing what amounts to gender apartheid, Vaez said.&nbsp;

"Another Iranian woman won the Nobel prize 20 years ago but the regime remains unchanged and unreformed," Vaez added, while referring to Ebadi winning Nobel Peace Prize in 2003.

"The prize is, however, bound to energise Iranian women to continue their fight for their rights and dignity," said Vaez.

Iranian women experience discrimination in law and in practice particularly in relation to marriage, divorce and custody issues.

Post-1979 compulsory hijab laws affect virtually every aspect of women’s public life in Iran. Women's access to&nbsp;employment, education, social benefits and proper health care&nbsp;depends on complying with compulsory hijab laws, which are routinely enforced through a web of rules and arbitrary interpretation by state agents, such as the morality police.
