In Salt Lake City, Utah, US, a 911 caller reported that a man had entered a brewery in his underwear, tried to steal beer, and was running around in the street, endangering both himself and oncoming traffic. The police then tried to detain him, but Nykon Brandon passed away soon after.

Activists questioned why an unarmed person died and accused officers of using excessive force after the Salt Lake City Police Department on Friday released body-camera footage and the 911 tape of the deadly incident on August 14.

“Stealing a beer does not equate to the death penalty,” said Lex Scott, founder of Black Lives Matter-Utah. “I don’t care if this man robbed 10 banks in one day. He didn’t deserve to die. He deserved to make it to court.”

Brandon, 35, passed away at a time when there are still countless instances of police shootings of unarmed persons in the United States, many of whom were going through a mental health crisis. Activists have asked for improvements, arguing that specific mental health crisis teams would be a better response option than armed police, who frequently aggravate situations.

According to Brandon's Facebook page, he worked for a company that offers plumbing, appliances, and hardware while attending Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Many of the commenters on his page expressed their sorrow and grief at his passing.

The 911 caller said a man had come to Fisher Brewing, attacked a person at the door and was “running around crazy. Very erratic. He just jumped in and out of the road.”

“Definitely mental health issues,” the caller said. “So if you’ve got mental health resources, send them out.”

Instead, bodycam video shows a policeman exiting his patrol vehicle and ordering Brandon to halt. A second cop pulls Brandon to the ground and the two attempt to hold him down after he retaliates, raises a fist, and looks to grab for the officer's holstered pistol. Brandon is on a gravel bed between the road and the sidewalk, pushing against the officers, and one of the officers is yelling, "Stop."

The film from nine body cameras shows no police de-escalation attempts, despite the fact that an executive order signed by Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall two years ago required all Salt Lake City Police Department officers to apply de-escalation techniques before deploying force.

“De-escalation tactics are no longer suggested or preferred — they are mandatory prior to using force to effect an arrest unless it would be unreasonable to do so,” Mendenhall said in announcing the police reforms, which were prompted in part by the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police in 2020.

Salt Lake City Police Department spokesperson Brent Weisberg said of the Aug. 14 incident: “As the body-worn camera video shows, this is a situation that rapidly unfolded. It was a chaotic situation and our officers were required to make very fast decisions to get a situation under control that was very tense.”

He was taken to the institution after officers concluded he was intoxicated and issued a citation for public intoxication. According to KUTV, the institution is not a detention facility, thus patients are free to leave whenever they like.

At 3:22 PM, members of the Salt Lake City Police Department came across Brandon. Except for perhaps a few muddled phrases, he is not seen speaking in the videos as he battles with the officers.

“We want to help you,” an officer says. “You’ve got to stop fighting with us.”

Brandon pauses moving after a short while. Can you hear me? the cop asks three times while tapping Brandon on the shoulder with his gloved hand. Brandon doesn't answer.

“Get him in recovery,” an officer commands, and the others roll Brandon onto his side.

“Come on man,” an officer says. All the camera footage released by the police goes dark at that point.

In a news statement, Salt Lake City Police stated that at 3:27 pm, officers started providing emergency treatment. They began giving chest compressions and giving the first of several Narcan dosages a minute later.

“At 4:16 p.m. SLCPD is notified that Mr. Brandon died. The exact time of death is unknown,” the news release said.

The police department announced that a thorough investigation was being carried out by an outside organization and that a separate inquiry would be carried out by the department's internal affairs branch.

Rae Duckworth, the operational chairwoman for the Black Lives Matter chapters in Utah, is curious as to why the cops' attempts to assist Brandon are not shown in the footage that has been made public.

Influential Iraqi Shi'ite leader Moqtada al-Sadr on Monday took to Twitter to announce his full withdrawal from political life. The move was surprising for many as his protesters have been blocking parliament for weeks now.

"I've decided not to meddle in political affairs. I, therefore, announce now my definitive retirement," read Sadr's tweet where he also announced that he was shutting his political offices and institutions in the country, following an unsalvagable political deadlock.

According to an AFP report, live fire rocked Baghdad's Green Zone area in the evening as Sadr's supporters stormed the area. Witnesses on the ground stated that the shots were fired by supporters of the rival Shi'ite bloc. Moreover, security forces also fired tear gas canisters to disperse the supporters of both groups.

Why the protest?

As reported extensively by WION, Sadr and his legion of supporters have been on the streets of Iraq, protesting for months and batting for the dissolution of the parliament.

Reportedly, in the October parliamentary election last year, Sadr’s supporters had won the most seats. However, they were unable to form a government and since then, the country has been in a deadlock.

Moreover, Sadr calling for the resignation en-masse of his parliamentary bloc has provided the initiative to his Iran-backed Shia opponents, the Coordination Framework Alliance.

Oxford University recently released an intriguing research which might force most of us to reach down and pinch our waists while reading the article. Reportedly, the research states that every extra inch on a person's waistline can increase the risk of heart failure by 10 per cent. The study, which took 13 years and over 430,000 British subjects to complete was presented at the European Society of Cardiology congress in Barcelona. Reportedly, the participants had an average age of 56 and 8,669 suffered first-time heart failure events, with many proving fatal as well. The study effectively meant that a person having a waistline of 41-inch might be 40 per cent more likely to contract heart-related illness when compared to a person having a 37-inch waist. Read more: New study shows artificial sweeteners may increase sugar levels, affect gut health Moreover, according to the researchers, people with bigger waistlines were more likely to develop heart conditions than those weighing heavier. Dr Ayodipupo Oguntade, the lead researcher of the study confirmed that 'trunk fat' was a major indicator of a person developing heart conditions. "The amount of fat people carry around their trunk is more important in tracking body fatness and cardiovascular risk." said Dr Oguntade. He further added that a person with a bigger waistline was 3.21 times more likely to suffer heart failure compared to a person having a high Body Mass Index. The person in the latter category had 2.65 times the risk of suffering heart failure. Days after quitting Congress, former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that he had a wrong perception of the country's leader. "I used to think PM Modi must be a crude man. I thought he won't care...since he does not have a wife or any kids. But he showed humanity," said Azad. The former Union Minister was referring to an incident last year when he was retiring from parliament's Upper House i.e Rajya Sabha. "Read the contents of his speech. PM Modi was not talking about being sad at my leaving the House. He was talking about an incident," Azad told the reporters on Monday. At the time, PM Modi had given a passionate farewell speech for Azad which had left most parliamentarians teary-eyed. During the speech, PM Modi mentioned a terror incident in 2006 when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat while Azad was the CM of J&K "Some tourists from Gujarat had died in a grenade attack in Kashmir (in 2006) when I was chief minister there. Modi saheb, who was chief minister of Gujarat, called my office. But I was choked up, crying at how brutal the killings were. I could not speak with him. He heard me crying as my staff brought the phone close to me," added Azad. "Mr Modi kept calling my office for updates. Later, as I was seeing off the two planes carrying the bodies and those injured, families of the victims were howling in grief. I started weeping too. It came on on TV too. He called again but I could not speak." PM Modi's passionate goodbye to Azad had raised several eyebrows at the time as well. Keeping up with the changing times and batting for inclusivity, the Supreme Court of India on Monday made significant observations that expands the definition of traditional family units to include queer and unmarried relationships.

Keeping up with the changing times and batting for inclusivity, the Supreme Court of India on Monday made significant observations that expands the definition of traditional family units to include queer and unmarried relationships. "Familial relationships may take the form of domestic, unmarried partnerships or queer relationships," said the court. In most societies, the concept of 'family' is usually narrowed down to a structure where a mother, father and their children are present. The court took on this pre-conceived notion and added: "This assumption ignores both, the many circumstances which may lead to a change in one's familial structure, and the fact that many families do not conform to this expectation, to begin with." Further building upon its statement, the bench comprising of Justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna asserted that atypical family units are also entitled to equal protection of the law. "A household may be a single parent household for any number of reasons, including the death of a spouse, separation, or divorce. Similarly, the guardians and caretakers (who traditionally occupy the roles of the "mother" and the "father") of children may change with remarriage, adoption, or fostering." Read more: India: Supreme Court bats for same abortion limits for married & unmarried women "These manifestations of love and of families may not be typical but they are as real as their traditional counterparts. Such atypical manifestations of the family unit are equally deserving not only of protection under law but also of the benefits available under social welfare legislation." Stating that the black letter of the law must not be followed which puts the non-conventional family structures at a disadvantage, the court observed: "The black letter of the law must not be relied upon to disadvantage families which are different from traditional ones. Reportedly, the complainant was denied maternity leave by her employee for her biological child stating she had already availed one for taking care of her spouse's child from an earlier marriage. “The fact that the appellant’s spouse had two biological children from his first marriage would not impinge upon the entitlement of the appellant to avail maternity leave for her sole biological child,” said the bench in its judgement. With winters coming along with noxious smog, the Indian government is promoting a motorcycle helmet with filters and a fan at the back, saying it can remove 80 per cent of the pollutants. Shellios Technolabs is a start-up firm that has been developing the helmet since 2016 with funds of tens of thousands of dollars from state agencies.

Amit Pathak, the creator, said that it is the first of its kind in the world. The aim behind developing it is that 2016 saw the first news stories about the polluted air that, from mid-December to early February, made it difficult to breathe in such cold weather, trapping dust and smog. The helmet costs Rs. 4,500 ($56), approximately four times the price of an ordinary helmet.

One method to help with air pollution was an air purifier. However, an air purifier might be installed inside a house or a place, but people riding bikes are completely unprotected.

Pathak said that his company developed the helmet air purification system that has replaced the filter membrane and a fan that is driven by a battery that lasts six hours and can be recharged using a microUSB port.

In 2019, helmet sales began, and an independent laboratory discovered that the helmet prevented 80 percent of pollutants from entering the nostrils.

As Reuter’s poll stated, the helmet reduced outdoor PM 2.5 particle concentrations by 43.1 micrograms.

The Supertech twin towers in Noida, Uttar Pradesh will be demolished on Sunday, marking the end of a nine-year legal battle. The demolitions are set to take place at 2:30 pm with the authorities rigging the structure with around 3,700 kg of explosives. With 20,000 circuits set for the demolition, the project engineer said that the entire process should take nine seconds to complete. The authorities have also evacuated the nearby areas so that they are not affected by the explosion and rubble.

In 2012, the residents of the Supertech Emerald Court society had filed a legal complaint when the towers were first approved. The residents complained that there were irregularities when it comes to the construction and the Allahabad High Court agreed with them in 2014. The demolition was ordered that year and in 2021, the court once again asked the authorities to carry out the order.

According to the engineer, the dust resulting from the explosion should take around 12 minutes to settle down, but the authorities have taken steps to improve the time. A special dust machine has been installed at the demolition site to monitor pollution levels after the demolition.

The resultant rubble can also become a problem for the residents of the area but the “waterfall method” will make sure that the rubble does not scatter in a big radius. According to estimates, it will take three months to clear it and transport it to the designated spots.

Mumbai-based company Edifice Engineering is in charge of the demolition and along with Central Building Research Institute and the Noida authorities, they have come up with a concrete plan to carry out the orders in a smooth way and order – ranging from damage control to evacuation procedures.

A lot of speculations and questions emerged when J.K. Rowling didn't attend the 'Harry Potter' reunion that marked its 20th anniversary. Since the author was nowhere to be seen in 'Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts', which premiered on January 1 this year on HBO Max, fans were quite disappointed. And, now the author has finally shared why she didn't attend the reunion and meet the cast of the franchise.

During her appearance on Virgin Radio Saturday, the author explained why she didn't feature in the reunion. According to People magazine, the author said, "I was asked to be on that, and I decided I didn`t want to do it."

"I thought it was about the films more than the books, quite rightly. That was what the anniversary was about," Rowling told the host of the show, Graham Norton.

"No one said don't (do it)... I was asked to do it and I decided not to," she added.

The 57-year-old also discussed her relationship with social media on the show. While referring to a death threat she received after expressing her concern about Salman Rushdie's stabbing incident, she said, "I try to behave online as I would like others to behave... I've never threatened anyone," and added, "I certainly wouldn't want anyone to go to their houses or anything like that."

"Social media can be a lot of fun, and I do like the pub argument aspect of it. That can be a fun thing to do...," she continued. "I sort of have a love-hate relationship with it now. I can happily go for a few days without getting into a (virtual) pub brawl."
