It has been a year since the US forces haphazardly left their posts in Afghanistan, leaving the land in the hands of Talibani barbarians and terrorists. During the muddled exit, US troops, its allies and numerous other dependents were left in the lurch, fighting Talibanis. Now, a documentary has revealed that during the exit, a US Army colonel blocked the exit of several allies, effectively pushing them into the killing zones. IN PICS | What life in Afghanistan looks like after one year of Taliban rule? Reportedly, in a new documentary titled, “Send Me” directed by Nick Palmisciano, the members of a special operations volunteer team have revealed that an unnamed Colonel 'murdered' the passengers of five buses by not allowing them to board the planes that could have allowed them to leave Kabul. “There was a colonel who came out and wanted to show that essentially he was the one that could decide whether or not somebody could get on a plane or not," stated a witness, whose identity was concealed in the documentary. Meanwhile, MMA fighter turned-solider Tim Kennedy, who was part of the 13-member group tasked with the job of saving as many allies as possible added: "The colonel made the call to ‘put everybody back out'. I don’t care who they are, they get back on those buses and those buses go back into Kabul." Read more: Taliban restricts female students from leaving Kabul for studies: Report It is pertinent to note that passengers of the five buses had verified documents. They were carefully searched and vetted by the Marines and arrived at the US-controlled Black Gate on the fateful day of August 25, 2021 around 3 AM. However, the top-ranking Colonel from the 82nd Airborne division would not let them or the buses ferrying them get inside. The Colonel did not even allow the refugees that carried a US passport, stating the documents might have been forged. As a last-ditch attempt to save the lives of refugees on the buses, a call was made to North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis. The Republican leader further egged the army generals to intervene. However, by then, the situation outside the airport had turned dire and effectively the fate of the refugees was sealed. The documentary is streaming on Amazon Prime and in select theatres. Barely a month after starting its operations, India's newest aircraft carrier Akasa Air has run into trouble. Reportedly, earlier this week, the company suffered a major data breach which exposed the personal data of its passengers. Reportedly, after getting to know about the data breach, Akasa Air promptly shared the information with Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), a nodal agency working under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of the Government of India. "This is to inform you that a temporary technical configuration error related to our login and sign-up service was reported on Thursday, August 25, 2022," said the airline in a mail to the government nodal agency. Details such as name, gender, phone number, and email id of the passengers have been leaked in the breach. However, according to the airline, confidential information such as travel records and payment information of the passengers had not been compromised. In addition to the mail sent to the agency, Akasa Air also dropped a mail to the passengers, informing them about the course of action it had taken so far. "We self-reported the incident to CERT-In (which is the government authorized nodal agency tasked to deal with incidents of this nature). Despite having extensive protocols in place to prevent incidents of such nature, we have undertaken additional reviews to ensure that the security of all our systems is enhanced further," Moreover, apologising for the incident, Akasa Air stated that it was reinforcing its systems. With the debut launch of its next-generation megarocket, the Space Launch System (SLS), and the Orion crew capsule it is designed to carry, scheduled for next Monday, August 29, in Florida, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration hopes to make a significant advancement in its revived lunar ambitions.

The unmanned capsule will go around the Moon on a six-week test voyage called Artemis I when the combined SLS-Orion spacecraft lifts off from Cape Canaveral's Kennedy Space Center.

Before it is certified suitable to carry passengers, the journey aims to put the SLS vehicle—which is thought to be the most complicated and potent rocketship in the world—through a rigorous stress test of its systems during an actual flight.

"This new deep space exploration system is going to take us back to the moon and to new scientific discoveries that we can't even imagine yet," said Randy Lycans, Vice President and General Manager of NASA's Enterprise Solutions.

The SLS is the largest new vertical launch system NASA has created since the Saturn V rockets used in the 1960s and 1970s for the Apollo lunar programme.

The SLS-Orion spacecraft has so far cost NASA at least $37 billion, which includes design, construction, testing, and ground facilities. Its development has taken more than ten years and has been plagued by years of delays and billion-dollar cost overruns.

The Artemis programme of NASA seeks to send astronauts back to the moon as early as 2025 and to build a permanent lunar colony as a stepping stone to even more ambitious future missions transporting people to Mars. If Artemis I is successful, it could lead to the first crewed SLS-Orion mission, an out-and-back orbital voyage around the moon called Artemis II, as early as 2024, and then an Artemis III excursion to the lunar surface a year or more later.

The four primary SLS engines and its solid rocket boosters are scheduled to fire at 8:33 a.m. EDT (12:33 GMT) on Monday, barring last-minute technical issues or unfavourable weather. Recovery of Chinese M16 rifle in J&K ambush perplexes security forces

Seven civilians were killed in an ambush on a convoy of trucks leaving a gold mine in Burkina Faso on Friday, according to a military source and locals. Since 2015, the poor Sahel state has experienced a steady stream of deadly terrorist strikes, many of which target gold miners.

A military source reported that "a terrorist attack caused the death of at least seven civilians this morning" in Nadiabonli's eastern region. The insider further said that once a convoy from the Boungou gold mine came to a stop because of technical difficulties, it was attacked.

Residents reported eight fatalities, all of them were civilian drivers, bringing the death toll somewhat higher.

11 victims were lost in an attack on the northern gold mining town of Baliata in March by unidentified gunmen. At least 10 workers were killed just two days prior in another attack on an illegal gold mine in the northeast close to the Niger border.

In November 2019, a convoy carrying workers to the Boungou mine was ambushed, resulting in the deaths of 38 people and the three-month closure of the site by Canadian mining company Semafo.

The Taparko mine in northern Burkina Faso was shut down in April of this year, according to Russian gold company Nordgold, because it was "under terrorist threat."

The dogs from the unit are first sent to detect the location of the hiding terrorists and the arms and ammunition they are carrying. The feed from cameras fitted on these dogs is monitored from a control room. These dogs are trained to enter the location of the hiding terrorists without getting noticed by them. They are also trained not to bark during these operations.

If these dogs are noticed by the hiding terrorists and are attacked by them, the dogs respond with a counter-attack. The handler of the dog always keeps a sharp vigil on the situation.

''Our dogs are doing wonderful service for the Army as well as the civil population in city areas. They are being used extensively for explosive detection in Road Opening Party (ROP) duties, for sanitising any VIP or vulnerable area. They are actively used as the first responders in the operations also,'' said Abhay Khokhar, Lt Col, Dog Squad, Indian Army.

The Indian Army has various breeds of dogs in its units across India. These include labradors, german shepherds, Belgian malinois and great mountain swiss dogs. Among the Indian breeds, the mudhol hound is part of the units as well. These dogs are used for various purposes like guard duty, patrolling, sniffing explosives including Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), mine detection, sniffing contraband items, including drugs, and attacking targets.

''We have eight major specialities of army dogs in the Indian Army, they are used for explosive and mine detection, tracking, search and rescue operations, avalanche rescue missions and other situations as per requirements. We train dogs as per the requirements of the Indian Army. Majorly, we have labradors, german shepherds, and recently introduced Belgian shepherds. Apart from these international breeds, we have tried certain Indian breeds also like Mudhol Hounds. We have trained them for various tasks, and they have been deployed in the Indian Army and are doing well,'' added Lt Col Abhay Khokhar.

Every Indian Army dog has a handler to train and guide them daily. The main training starts at the Remount and Veterinary Corps Centre and College in Meerut. These dogs are trained for over nine months and later for three months on the ground. The Army keeps these dogs for around seven-eight years depending on their agility. These dogs are provided special food and nutrition to keep them healthy and active.

"All these dogs are trained at the RVC Centre and College at Meerut where we have a proper facility for training. After training, these dogs are inducted into dog units which are mostly in the field. We keep training them as per requirements in the operational areas. They are given a balanced diet comprising rice, milk, meat vegetables, dog biscuits and other supplements,'' said Lt Col Khokhar.

The Indian Army has more than 27 dog units across the country. Around 24 dogs are a part of one unit. Some dogs are born in the RVC Centre and some of them are brought from outside. The Indian Army chooses the best ones and trains them after checking if they are suited for the environment.

''There are many things that we look for in an Army Dog. We see whether the dog is trainable and suited for the environment they are to be placed in. Whether they are fit for Indian weather, summer, and winters. We keep all this in mind and then select a breed and give them respective tasks. Every breed has its pros and cons. We select the breeds keeping in mind the task for them. For protection work, for guard duties, and assault duties, we prefer Belgian shepherds and german shepherds. For sniffing purposes, we use labradors. We are using mudhol hounds, cocker spaniel, and many other Indian breeds,'' he added.

The Indian Army even has special awards for dogs for their bravery. From the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card, Vice Chief of Staff Commendation Card and GOC in Chief Commendation Card, these dogs are awarded for their performance during various operations.

The Indian Army recently lost a dog named Axel in an operation in Jammu and Kashmir. Axel was shot dead by terrorists in North Kashmir's Baramulla district. Two-year-old Axel was given a gallantry award by the Government of India on Independence Day.

Do you know the canine team of the Indian Army is the first responder in every anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir? The success of these operations mostly depends on the highly trained members of the Indian Army's dog squad. It is pertinent to note that members of the European Pride Organisers Association (EPOA) had chosen Belgrade as the host city for the annual event, almost three years ago.

Thus, the sudden cancellation of the event has invited harsh criticism from LGBTQ+ activists. Kristine Garina, President of EPOA urged the authorities to honour their promise of supporting the event.

“President Vucic cannot cancel someone else’s event. The right to hold Pride has been ruled by the European Court of Human Rights to be a fundamental human right," said Garina.

Garina also added that the government was using stale tropes to cancel the event which celebrated diversity.

“Aside from the illegality of such a ban, it must be noted that those opposing EuroPride in Belgrade are using tired old tropes, inaccuracies and downright lies to discredit what is, in fact, a celebration of human rights and equality,” said Garina.

The owners of a pipeline that spilt crude oil into beaches in California have agreed to admit guilt to charges of environmental contamination and pay $13 million, these businesses announced on Friday.

Two of its subsidiaries, Beta Operating Co. and San Pedro Bay Pipeline Co., along with Texas-based Amplify Energy, which runs the pipeline off Huntington Beach, have stated they will formally acknowledge letting oil contaminate the waters off southern California in October of last year.

They will pay a $7.1 million fine and $5.8 million in restitution to federal agencies that helped clean up 25,000 gallons of crude oil that leaked from their pipeline as part of plea pleas made in federal court.

South of Los Angeles, between Huntington Beach and Laguna Beach, a stretch of coast that is popular with surfers and is also home to dolphins, was blackened by the spill for 18 miles (24 kilometres).

Inspections conducted underwater found that a significant portion of the pipeline had been moved and had a pipe rupture.

Given that the area is frequently crowded with cargo ships waiting to reach the big ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, investigators stated last year that they feared the damage may have been caused by the anchor of a ship.

Amplify's president and CEO, Martyn Willsher, stated that the business had "cooperatively" worked to fix the issue as soon as it was identified.

"We believe this resolution, which is subject to court review and approval, reflects the commitments we made immediately following the incident to impacted parties and is in the best interest of Amplify and its stakeholders. We are committed to safely operating in a way that ensures the protection of the environment and the surrounding communities," said Willsher.

India and Argentina have agreed to firm up ties whilst simultaneously agreeing to increase engagement in defence and trade. The Latin American country has shown interest in India's indigenously developed TEJAS fighter aircraft, manufactured under the 'Make in India' campaign for its Air Force.

"EAM, acknowledging Argentine interest in the Made in India TEJAS fighter aircrafts for Argentine Air Force, highlighted importance of the proposal in enhancing strategic quotient of the bilateral relationship." read the joint press statement released after the Joint Commission Meeting (JCM).

The JCM took place between India's external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar and Argentina's foreign minister Santiago Cafiero. It is pertinent to note that apart from Argentina, countries such as Australia, Egypt, the USA, Indonesia, and the Philippines have also shown interest in LCA aircraft which is manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). However, Argentina is the first country in Latin America to show interest in Tejas, which is a single-engine, lightweight supersonic fighter.

Both countries have also agreed to "request the Central Banks to carry out studies for the development of a payment mechanism in local currencies" so that trade between the two countries can transpire without the use of a third currency. This development comes in the backdrop of more and more countries being keen to use local currencies for trade instead of the dollar.

In the past, India has used the Rupee-Rial and Rupee-Ruble mechanism to trade with Iran and Russia. In July, India's central bank RBI issued an order that allowed international trade in rupee, a move that not only benefits Russia but many countries in the neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, Argentina has said that India has expressed its support for the country's membership in an expanded BRICS grouping. This has been part of ongoing discussions between the two foreign ministers, dating back to the bilateral meeting between the two ministers on the sidelines of the Bali G20 Foreign ministers' meet, held earlier this year in July.

Countries like Iran, and Algeria are also keen to become a member of the over-decade-old grouping which has Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
