This Sunday, 28 August, the Supertech twin towers in Noida, Uttar Pradesh will be reduced to dust and rubble in about 15 seconds with the use of 3,700 kg of explosives. These skyscrapers, which are taller than Qutub Minar in Delhi, will be India's tallest buildings ever to be demolished.

Authorities and government organisations are confronting several obstacles prior to the demolition as the twin towers are located very close to a residential complex. There has also been discussion over the years on the environmental effects of such extensive demolitions and what they might signal for upcoming construction projects.

Here is a comprehensive guide to help you understand the why, how, and where of the demolition case, the preparation in line, and the consequences as the D-day draws closer:

Where are the Supertech twin towers located?

Sector 93A in Noida, close to the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, is where the twin (40-storey) towers Apex and Ceyane are situated. Within these two towers are over 900 apartments. They are a component of the Noida, Uttar Pradesh-based Supertech project Emerald Court. A total of about 7.5 lakh square feet is occupied by the two towers.

When will the building be torn down?

On August 28 at 2.30 pm, the twin towers are planned for demolition.

Exactly why are the towers being demolished?

The twin towers were ordered to be demolished by the Supreme Court after noting that they were constructed unlawfully. The Emerald Court Group Housing Society Residents' Welfare Association previously filed a petition, alleging that the development violated the 2010 UP Apartments Act. As per PTI reports, it was also claimed that their building violated the minimum distance requirement of 16 metres from an adjoining block, making it unsafe.

The Supreme Court had mandated the towers' destruction in 2021. According to reports, these were allegedly constructed without obtaining the individual flat owners' agreement as required by the UP Apartment Act.

Who will conduct the demolition?

The Supertech Twin buildings will be demolished by the Mumbai-based Edifice Engineering and its South African associate company, Jet Demolitions.

How is the demolition going to happen?

The implosion method will be used to destroy the structures. About 3,700 kg of explosives is being used for the demolition.

The Apex tower includes 11 major blast floors, where all of the columns on each floor will have explosives installed and blasted, and seven secondary floors, where 60% of the columns will be blasted, according to project specifications.

How much time will the demolition take?

The astounding event will only last for roughly 15 seconds. Utkarsh Mehta, a partner in the demolition company Edifice Engineering, was quoted by PTI as saying "It will take nine to 10 seconds for all the explosives to blast in a series making a loud noise."

He said that the projected period for dust dispersion is 10 minutes. "After the blasts, the structures won't come down all at once and would take four to five seconds to come down fully," he said.

What will the cost of the demolition be?

The twin towers' demolition will probably cost close to Rs 20 crore because it requires a lot of explosives, labour and equipment.

What volume of debris can be expected?

Approximately 35,000 cubic metres of rubble are anticipated to be left behind after the destruction of the buildings, according to projections made by the project's administrators.

Additionally, two societies — Emerald Court and the neighbouring ATS Village — and their residents would be most affected by the demolition of the roughly 100-metre-tall twin towers, according to the officials.

What arrangements are being made for the demolition?

- On August 28, more than 5,000 people will leave the Emerald Court and ATS Village organisations. The residents must leave the property by 7:30 am, and only those who have received safety clearance from Edifice may return after 4 pm.

- More than 2,500 automobiles will no longer be part of society. The Botanical Garden metro station's multilevel parking structure will include space for them as per the Noida Authority. More than 5,000 automobiles can comfortably fit in the parking lot of the metro station at a time.

- There will be restrictions on entry for people, cars, and animals in the vicinity of the twin towers.

- On August 28, from 2.15 to 2.45 p.m., the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway will be closed to vehicular traffic.

- The road built behind the park in front of the twin towers will be used to park emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks.

- There are about 50 beds set aside at the Felix Hospital in Sector 137 for residents in case they get sick, including 12 beds for Emerald Court residents who are bedridden, according to PTI reports.

- On August 28, there will only be 10 workers left at the demolition site. Two Indian blasters, Edifice project manager Mayur Mehta, and seven personnel of its South African expert partner Jet Demolition will be among these.

- Additionally, the Noida Police issued a directive prohibiting the use of drones in urban airspace from August 26 through August 31, citing safety concerns in light of Supertech's unlawful structures being demolished. "Drones will not be operated by any private person or institution from August 26 to 31. Violation of this order will be an offense punishable under IPC Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by government officials)," the order states.

What happens with the debris generated?

- It shall be discarded in accordance with the 2016 Waste Management Rules for Construction and Demolition.

- There would need to be 1,200 to 1,300 truck loads of material removed from the location. Sector 80 is home to the Noida Authority's 300-ton per day capacity construction and demolition waste management facility. It is still unclear, though, if it would be processed there given the amount of debris that would be removed, according to PTI.

- All of the debris, according to the authorities, won't be wasted. The destruction is expected to yield around 4,000 tonnes of iron and steel, which the Edifice intends to use to partially recoup the demolition cost.

- Both Emerald Court and ATS Village societies will have geo-textile covering. For the entire process, 110 km of wired mesh comprised of galvanised iron and geotextile weighing about 225 tonnes will be used.

Ishtiaq Ahmed, the general manager of planning for the Noida Authority, was quoted by PTI as saying that 21,000 cubic metres of the rubble will be deposited on a remote plot of land that was five to six hectares in size. He stated that the remaining rubble would be thrown into a pit that has been created in the twin towers' basement sections.

Will the buyers receive their investment in the twin skyscrapers back?

Prior to this, the Supreme Court had instructed the government to return homebuyers their whole purchase price plus 12 percent interest starting at the time of booking. Additionally, it stipulated that the RWA of the Emerald Court project shall receive Rs 2 crore as compensation for the harassment brought on by the twin tower building.

The Supertech Emerald Court Project's investors and homeowners were entitled to receive their money back by January 17, 2022, along with 12 percent interest, according the court's directives.

Has a demolition like this taken place in the past?

In Kerala's Kochi district, the Supreme Court had two years ago ordered a demolition action against four illegal seaside housing complexes. The final two high towers were demolished using a controlled implosion technique, bringing the demolition campaign for Kochi's unlawful Maradu flats to an end.

Explained: Everything you need to know about the Noida Supertech twin towers demolition

In an apparent effort to replenish troops that have sustained significant losses in six months of deadly combat and get ready for a protracted, exhausting battle in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin authorised a significant expansion of his nation's military forces on Thursday.

The decision to boost army numbers by 137,000, or 13%, to 1.15 million by the end of the year coincided with ominous events in Ukraine:

— According to Ukrainian authorities, fires damaged the final functional transmission line, cutting off the Zaporizhzhia power plant in the centre of the conflict in southern Ukraine from the electrical system. The incident led to a regional blackout. A local Russian-installed official reported that the plant was later restored to the grid.

— 25 people have died as a result of a Russian rocket strike on a train station and the neighbourhood on Ukraine's Independence Day, according to Ukrainian authorities. In its attack on Wednesday, Russia claimed to have attacked a military train and killed more than 200 Ukrainian reservists.

Putin's order was vague as to whether the increase would be accomplished by expanding the draught, increasing volunteerism, or a combination of the two. The Kremlin's worries about a potential domestic backlash from a larger conscription, however, led some Russian military strategists to foresee a greater dependence on volunteers.

With the addition of the 1.15 million personnel, the move will increase Russia's armed forces to 2.04 million.

More Russians than the Soviet Union lost in its ten-year war in Afghanistan, according to estimates from the West, which vary from more than 15,000 to over 20,000. Up to 80,000 Russian soldiers may have been killed or wounded, according to the Pentagon's report from last week, which makes Moscow less able to launch major offensives.

Only volunteer contract soldiers, according to the Kremlin, are involved in the conflict in Ukraine. However, it might be challenging to locate additional willing soldiers, and according to military analysts, the anticipated troop levels might not be enough to support operations.

Retired Russian Col. Retired Viktor Murakhovsky stated that the Kremlin will likely try to continue depending on volunteers and that this will account for the majority of the increase in remarks published by the Moscow-based RBC online news outlet.

Fighting near the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia facility has raised concerns in Ukraine about a catastrophe akin to Chernobyl. Russia and Ukraine have both accused the other of bombarding the location.

It was unclear right away if the damaged line in the incident on Thursday carried incoming power or outgoing power needed to run the plant, including the crucial cooling system for the reactors. According to Ukrainian authorities, a backup power line that uses energy from a different, non-nuclear reactor is still connected and in use.

The Russian government has frequently asserted that its forces exclusively aim at legitimate military objectives after attacks in which civilians have died. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu maintained the military was doing all possible to save civilians hours before the massacre at the railway station, even if it meant slowing down its offensive in Ukraine.

In April, when large groups, primarily made up of women and children, tried to flee the fighting, a Russian missile attack on a train station in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk resulted in the deaths of over 50 people. The assault was called a war crime.

The social development minister of Chile's Cabinet has resigned, according to President Gabriel Boric, who made the announcement on Thursday. This is the first change to his young administration since it took office in March.

Following a news report that one of her advisers had spoken to a radical Mapuche indigenous leader who had called for an armed struggle against the state and who had been arrested on Wednesday, Social Development Minister Jeanette Vega resigned.

The decision is a setback for Boric's center-left government, which was elected with a high turnout. But as a crucial vote on a new constitution, he has backed approaches, and Boric has watched his support quickly dwindle.

At a ceremony in northern Chile, Boric urged caution. It is appropriate to consider the weight of the minister's political responsibility in light of what we have learned.

An adviser to Vega spoke with Hector Llaitul, the head of an indigenous Mapuche organisation, according to a confidential police record that was leaked earlier in the day by the online news source Ex-Ante.

NASA astronauts performed a flyby of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket as it awaited the launch of Artemis 1 on August 29 in a stunning set of photos that they published on social media.

The pictures, which were recently taken above the 322-foot-tall (98-meter) SLS megarocket at Launch Complex 39B and the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, were posted on Twitter by astronauts Andrew Morgan, Reid Wiseman, and Christina Birch.

For more than 50 years, NASA has utilised Northrop T-38 Talon jets as training and pursuit aircraft. The twin-seat trainer can travel faster than most commercial aircraft—up to Mach 1.6 supersonic—and up to 40,000 feet in height.

Official statistics that delivered the most recent warning on the accelerating destruction of the largest rainforest in the world revealed this week that the number of forest fires in the Brazilian Amazon reached a nearly 15-year high.

According to the Brazilian space agency, INPE, 3,358 flames were discovered on Monday, August 22, the most for any 24-hour period since September 2007.

The number was almost three times higher than what was reported on the so-called "Day of Fire" on August 10, 2019, when farmers in the northern state of Para initiated a concerted effort to burn vast quantities of felled rainforest.

Then, flames caused a global outcry over images of one of the most important resources on Earth burning by sending thick, grey smoke 2,500 kilometres (1,500 miles) to Sao Paulo.

According to Alberto Setzer, director of INPE's fire surveillance programme, there is no evidence that the fires on Monday were planned. Instead, he said, they seem to follow a trend of escalating burning and deforestation.

According to experts, illicit farmers, ranchers, and investors destroy the land and burn trees to start fires in the Amazon.

With the arrival of drier weather in August, the Amazon fire season often begins in earnest.

For the forest, a crucial barrier against global warming, this year has been concerning thus far: INPE identified 5,373 fires last month, up 8% from July of last year.

With 24,124 fires reported so far this month, it is on track to be the worst August under President Jair Bolsonaro, albeit that number is still significantly below the 63,764 fires reported in August 2005, the worst August on record going back to the start of records in 1998.

Agribusiness ally Bolsonaro is under fire internationally for a rise of Amazon devastation that occurred under his administration. The average annual deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has surged by 75% since he assumed office in January 2019 compared to the preceding ten years.

That critique is rejected by the far-right president.

Judicial authorities in Mexico determined that they have sufficient evidence to proceed with charges against former Attorney General Jesus Murillo for his suspected involvement in the disappearance of 43 students in the year 2014.

Amongst these 43 students, the remains of three pupils have been identified.

The Mexican President, who took office at the end of 2018, pledged to inquire into the disappearances.

Last week, a judge released 100 search warrants, including Murillo’s.

Murillo was detained on Friday for high-level official arrest, accused of torture, forcible disappearance, and obstructing justice. He was the nation’s chief prosecutor at the time, overseeing an investigation into a case involving the disappearance of 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers’ College in Guerrero.

Murillo’s arrest comes after Mexico’s top human rights investigator marked the disappearance a ‘state crime’ making this case one of the biggest violations of human rights in the country.

As per experts, this investigation came to the conclusion that the students had been inadvertently abused, tortured, and killed by a local drug gang. The chief later defended himself during his hearing, the local Mexican hearing said.

HSBC outlined 14 reasons for its opposition to the plan in August, among them the fact that it would take three to five years to redesign its IT infrastructure and that regulatory permission from governments throughout the world would be required. The proposal of inviting a Ping An board member was also rejected by HSBC.

"International connectivity is core to our entire value proposition from clients to employees, and has contributed to our improved returns," Quinn said.

"It has been our judgment that alternative structural options will not deliver increased value for shareholders," he said. "Rather, they would have a material negative impact on value."

A source close to Ping An said: "HSBC only emphasized and clearly exaggerated the downsides and challenges of spinning off its Asia business but did not mention the huge benefits and long-term value that a spinoff could create."

The plan to split apart HSBC has historical roots. The bank was initially founded in Hong Kong in 1865 when it was still ruled by the British. It is the issuer of the Hong Kong dollar. Despite moving to London in 1993, the Asian market continues to be the company's main source of revenue.

HSBC made plans to invest $6 billion in its Asian business over the following five years public in 2021. Additionally, it planned to shift certain executives from London to Hong Kong and sell its French retail operation.
