The first monkeypox-related fatality in the US was verified on Tuesday by Texas authorities, who added that they are still trying to determine what role the disease played in the death of the "severely immunocompromised" patient.

Few cases of monkeypox patient deaths have been reported globally but none were reported thus far in the United States during the current outbreak.

The death was being investigated to see what part monkeypox may have played, according to a statement from Texas health officials.

They stated that the patient was an adult with a significantly compromised immune system.

There have been 18,100 cases of monkeypox reported in the US thus far. Health authorities' data suggests that there has recently been a minor slowdown in the number of new illnesses.

The majority of infections occur during sexual activity, and the epidemic mostly affects gay and bisexual men.

A CDC survey from last week found that since learning about the outbreak, about half of men who engage in heterosexual sex had cut back on their number of partners, one-night stands, or usage of dating apps.

The distribution of vaccines has been the main emphasis of the United States' response to the outbreak. The government has declared that doses will be made accessible exclusively during significant LGBTQ events, including this weekend's Southern Decadence celebration in New Orleans, two events in Oakland, California, and Atlanta's "Black Pride".

Calling for reforms, the President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Abdulla Shahid has said that the United Nations should reflect the geopolitical realities.

Calling for reforms, the President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Abdulla Shahid has said that the United Nations should reflect the geopolitical realities. The over 75-year-old body is the most represented organisation of the world with 193 member countries that collectively form the main body of the United Nations. Speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent, Sidhant Sibal, the UNGA President said, "I have urged member states, appealed to member states, if you want the United Nations to be regarded as credible, we will have to make sure that we become relevant to the current geopolitical realities of the day. We have to change the composition of the security council and the way that it functions," UNGA President is on a two-day India visit, during which he had several meetings that included External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and foreign secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra. In the interview, he listed out his achievement under the "Presidency of hope" and how the Russia-Ukraine conflict was a challenge. Abdulla Shahid is also the Maldives' foreign minister. In response to WION, he called the ties between New Delhi and Malé "outstanding". Dismissing anti-India propaganda in his country by some elements, Abdulla said, "It's a program of propaganda being pushed by a group of people who have nothing to offer to the people of Maldives," WION: If you can list out the key highlights of your Presidency? Abdulla Shahid: I came promising a presidency of hope, I came at a time when the world was reeling under death and despair, devastation during COVID-19. My theme of hope was based on five rays of hope: the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, rebuilding sustainably, respecting the rights of all, responding to the needs of the planet, and reforming the United Nations. Because I believe recovering from COVID-19 is to be our first and foremost effort. There is no other way than to recover from COVID-19 pandemic and achieve vaccine equity and vaccinate the world. I convened a high-level meeting on February 19 this year, to bring the countries together and to galvanise the international community on vaccine equity in addition to rebuilding sustainably. Achieving SDGs have been a challenge even before COVID-19. For small countries, LDCs etc the meagre resources that were allocated to achieve these SDGs had to be channelled to confront the pandemic. So, we were completely off track in many parts of the world to achieve the SDGs. We have to use this as an opportunity to restart and make this into recovery so that by 2030 we can achieve as much as possible. Respecting the rights of all, human rights have to be part of all, everything we do, and I wanted to bring this important theme, one of the fundamentals of the foundation of the UN, to the centre so that we are able to build around it. Never let human rights be relegated to the periphery. Responding to the needs of the planet we see what is happening to the planet. We see how badly the environment is degraded; climate change is impacting countries. We are seeing the glaciers melting, we see the deserts expanding, the forest fires raging, we see storms intensifying, and the sea level rising. We need to unite in front of this and have a conversation. In July I convened, "moment for nature". World leaders take a moment for nature and think about how we can save this planet for future generations. WION: Presidency was challenging amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. How did that impact your Presidency, a divided UN: West versus Russia and China? Abdulla Shahid: Well, it was a challenging time, because the permanent five members are involved in a conflict. What we were able to prove at the UN was the system for multilateralism does work, because at the UN when UNSC fails to address an international peace and security issue persistently. Then the UNSC or membership have the right to bring the issue to the general assembly. The general assembly has no veto, and every country has one vote. That was brought under United for peace resolution, and once a special emergency session is convened, the powers of the security council are transferred to the general assembly, including the power of enforcement of chapter 7 which is what we are in today. I am presiding over a special UN session that has been convened at the request of the security council after 40 years. We have seen the world unite with 143 countries, supporting the resolution that was submitted. We saw the international community speak clearly and loudly. Read more: 'Reflective of larger national attitude', Indian mission gives an earful to Chinese envoy to Colombo WION: But it also shows a very defunct UN. What initiative you took to reform? Abdulla Shahid: The process of the reforms of the security council has been going on for the last 14 years. The intergovernmental negotiations are continuing. This year, for the first time, we were able to do more meetings. We were able to bring more consensus on the very diverse issue that was on the table. We have to be mindful that we are talking about 193 countries coming together, including the five permanent members. It will continue to be a long process. However, I have urged member states and appealed to member states that if you want the United Nations to be regarded as credible, we will have to make sure that we become relevant to the current geopolitical realities of the day. We have to change the composition of the security council and the way that it functions. WION: Personally, for you what were the key focus areas, youth and women empowerment are issues you have been close to and raising it strongly. Abdulla Shahid: Gender equality is one of my priorities. I make sure, in my office at the general assembly that the office of the president is gender balanced, including at a very senior level in the cabinet. Also, I made a pledge that I will not attend any panel that is not gender balanced, a pledge that I have kept. I have also made sure to meet women and girls during all my travels to understand their views and understand the challenges and convey a message to them that together we can achieve. If business as usual is maintained, it will take 138 years for gender parity to be achieved. That is unacceptable, we have made positive interventions. We have to make sure that we properly talk about it and make complete, positive interventions so that it will be changed. Having more women at the table and in the decision-making in politics, and the economy is essential. I convened a high-level meeting on violence against women in politics because of violence against women in politics. We need to address this issue. We have to make the workplace friendly and welcoming for women coworkers. I remember in 2019 in the UN when Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand came to the general assembly, she had to leave the general assembly every two hours, because she was carrying a baby and had to feed. We do not have a facility for that. I have been successful in establishing a lactation room at the United Nations. Currently, we have nine rooms under the guardianship of New Zealand and El Salvador, one of them next to the general assembly hall itself. We have to mainstream, not only establish, and talk about it so it is established in other parts of the world as well. The question of highlighting the fact that women do not have equal opportunity has to be highlighted time and time again. We are talking about the pandemic so example, we saw death and devastation but one topic we do not talk about is violence against women and vulnerable groups. It is an issue neither you nor I can avoid because at the end of the day it's our mothers, our sisters and our children. Read more: Argentina shows interest in India's Tejas fighter aircraft; wants to trade in local currencies too WION: What brings you here in Delhi? You had a number of key meetings. Abdulla Shahid: India was the first country to support my presidency when my candidature was declared. India played a very important role in backing my presidency. The support India has given in the form of my Chef de cabinet, for example, a distinguished diplomat from India, Ambassador Nagaraj Naidu. He has been outstanding and working with member states. I wanted to convey and express my gratitude as my presidency comes to an end, for the cooperation and commitment they have given to the presidency of hope. More importantly to mention how appreciative the UN is of the outstanding commitment that India has for multilateralism. India is a member of the security council and continues to highlight many of these cherished principles at the UN. I also met the UN country team here who are doing outstanding work in reaching out to the people of India, in assisting the development work. WION: How do you see the geopolitical flashpoints, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, an aggressive China leading to Taiwan strait crisis. How do you see the development, what will you suggest to the global community? Abdulla Shahid: Our total commitment is to multilateralism, peaceful settlement of disputes and cherishing the United Nations Charter because the whole point of creating this organisation, the UN, is to bring these countries together to avoid conflict, avoid war and find a peaceful settlement of disputes. So, wherever you are, whatever disputes you have, you have to be committed to bringing that dispute to the United Nations, peaceful resolutions through the multilateral legal system. WION Now asking you questions in your capacity as the foreign minister of Maldives. How do you see India Maldives ties? We recently saw the visit of President Abdulla Shahid: Outstanding, that is how I will describe the relationship between the Maldives and India. Since President Solih took office on November 17, 2018, and Prime Minister Modi was himself present, the relationship has skyrocketed. The Maldives was the first country Prime Minister Modi visited in his second term. They have met so many times and the cooperation and understanding, at the leadership level, is excellent and that sets the agenda for us, who have to deal with it. Taking into consideration the number of pacts that were signed, ongoing bilateral projects, and the number of visits that have taken place, one word to describe the relationship is outstanding. WION: We have seen elements taking part or supporting anti-India propaganda including by former President Yameen. How do you see it, and do you think that can be curtailed? Abdulla Shahid: It's a program of propaganda being pushed by a group of people who have nothing to offer to the people of Maldives. No economic agenda, no development agenda, or social agenda. So they have to come up with something. So, they are attacking our best friend and closest ally. It is just like shooting down on our own foot. WION: We are witnessing a heating up of the Indian ocean with increased Chinese presence. We saw a Chinese spy vessel docking in Sri Lanka. How does it impact Maldives? Abdulla Shahid: For the Maldives, it's very simple. A stable Maldives is essential for stability and prosperity in the Indian ocean. A stable and prosperous Indian ocean is essential for prosperity in the Maldives. So will do everything and we will work with everyone to maintain stability, peace, and prosperity in the Indian ocean. WION: Questions remain over why the President of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapakse first came to the Maldives. Abdulla Shahid: Obviously, a question that you will have to ask President Rajapakse as to why he chose the Maldives. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

After weeks of accelerated growth of monkeypox cases across the globe, the epidemic might be slowing down, according to World Health Organization (WHO). Reportedly, the UN agency on Tuesday stated it saw 'encouraging' signs that the epidemic was receding in Europe. "There are encouraging early signs, as evidenced in France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, the UK and other countries that the outbreak may be slowing," said Hans Klug, WHO's regional director for Europe. However, to stop people from letting down their guard, Klug also advised that for complete elimination of the virus, more steps were required. "It's going in the right direction. However, to move towards elimination in our region, we need to urgently step up our efforts." he added. According to WHO data, last week saw a steep decline of 21 per cent in the number of new cases reported across the globe. It was the first time that decline had been reported after four consecutive weeks of increase in caseload. A total of 53 countries come under the WHO Europe region, which accounted for more than a third of cases worldwide. WATCH | Monkeypox: Expert tells WION what you must know × As reported by WION, it was last month that WHO, after its emergency committee meeting, declared the monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency. The declaration meant that WHO designated the virus outbreak as a significant threat to global health that warranted an international response. “We have an outbreak that has spread around the world rapidly, through new modes of transmission, about which we understand too little. For all of these reasons, I have decided that the global monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern." WHO director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was quoted as saying at the time. First detected in May, the virus rapidly spread to Europe and the United States. Although there is no specific treatment for the monkeypox virus, the health agencies have recommended antivirals such as tecovirimat to treat it. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Unable to compete in the gaming streaming market, Facebook on Tuesday announced that it will be shutting down its gaming app. Reportedly, the app which let users watch and play video games on-demand was launched two years ago amid much fanfare. It signed Brazilian footballer Neymar Jr and creators like DiguisedToast, Ramee to gain momentum. However, none of them appeared in the top stream rankings and eventually did not contribute much to the growth of the app. According to data from market research firm, Streamlabs, as of the second quarter, the gaming market was dominated by Twitch at 76.7 per cent, followed by YouTube at 15.4 per cent and Facebook Gaming lagging at only 7.9 per cent. Let me be frank with you. I've seen many earphones, tried them on, used them for months and been underwhelmed. But when I opened the Sony LinkBuds, I was pleasantly surprised. The USP is the unique design which isn't just for shock value. The charging case which houses the LinkBuds comes in a tiny form factor and can fit into the palm of your hand. Do note, that if you throw this into your handbag or backpack, you'll have to dig it out. The matte dark grey cover is classy and subtle and also fairly sturdy. Sony says the packaging is eco-friendly and sustainable.

And inside, are the LinkBuds which look nothing like any pair of earphones you have seen. While Apple's Airpods and their hockey stick design sparked several cheaper iterations, Sony's new open-ring design is a game-changer. It is perhaps the new truly wireless model for earphones.

HOW TO WEAR THEM?

I asked myself this question several times even as I marvelled at the design. So, if you opt for these, it will take some trial and error to get the best fit. But once they're in, the Sony LinkBuds are light and snug and one of the more comfortable fits when it comes to wireless earphones.

THE 'NEVER OFF' EXPERIENCE

In a sea of noise-cancelling wireless headsets and earphones, Sony proposes that you actually stay alert to your surroundings. The LinkBuds come with an 'audio transparency' feature which basically means that you are glued to what's happening around you even when you're on a run, writing your memoir or in a Teams Call with the LinkBuds. This feature works surprisingly well and is convenient. Let's be frank, you don't want to be caught nodding your head to your favourite tunes when your boss is yelling out for you!

There is no active noise-cancelling feature by choice and some may find this annoying at this price point. I, for one, use earphones as a support function to go wireless, and not to drown out the noise. So, if true ANC is your goal, opt for the Apple Airpods Pro or Sony's own ANC leader, the WF-1000XM4.

SOUND QUALITY: GOOD, NOT SPECTACULAR

Sony is known for its noise-cancelling audio category which has set the bar high for the competition. The Sony LinkBuds, however, are a curious proposition. Once you pair the earphones to the Sony Headphones Connect app, you can customise controls, use the Speak-to-Chat features and more. But I find these to be very cosmetic in nature and not value adds.

Spectacular, overpowering, intense -- these are adjectives you probably wouldn't use to describe the sound quality of the LinkBuds. And that is because they are hoping to fulfil another goal. The LinkBuds let you enjoy music while being connected to the mundane yet important demands of the real world. The sound is a bit flat at times even while listening to high-adrenaline beats.

But if you're looking for great ambient sound in a comfortable fit of earphones, the LinkBuds are your best bet.

SHOULD YOU BUY THEM?

At nearly 20,000 rupees, the Sony LinkBuds are certainly an investment worth mulling over. They perform well when it comes to answering and receiving calls. Running with them was a surprising delight given the IPX4 rating and sweat-proof design and no, they didn't fall off! The LinkBuds let you enjoy your favourite beats while keeping you aware of the activity around you. Is that something you want? Then the LinkBuds are a great buy.

A great design, comfortable fit and superb battery life may convince you to dole out the money. If active noise cancellation was thrown in, it would have sweetened the deal.

SONY LINKBUDS: Rs 19,990

-- COMPACT, COMFORTABLE DESIGN

-- BATTERY: 17.5 HOURS WITH CHARGING CASE

-- EASY BLUETOOTH PAIRING

-- NO ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION

SOUND QUALITY: GOOD, NOT SPECTACULAR Sony is known for its noise-cancelling audio category which has set the bar high for the competition. SONY LINKBUDS: Rs 19,990 -- COMPACT, COMFORTABLE DESIGN -- BATTERY: 17.5 HOURS WITH CHARGING CASE -- EASY BLUETOOTH PAIRING -- NO ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION

Sony LinkBuds review: Small size, decent sound

It is official. The southwest region of England is suffering from drought as extreme heatwave conditions across the country broke 90-year-old records, according to the Environment Agency. Reportedly, Bristol, Somerset, Dorset, South Gloucestershire and parts of Wiltshire in the Wessex area have been given drought status. The announcement comes on the heels of the National Drought Group, earlier this month pushing Kent, South London, North London, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Devon, Cornwall, Solent, South Downs, Herts, East Anglia, Thames, and the East Midlands into the list of regions enduring drought-like conditions. Read more: Amid heatwave, UK declares drought across eight areas of England For a country notorious for its inclement rainy weather, England has received below-average rainfall across all geographic regions, leading to rivers running dry as groundwater and reservoir levels plummet. According to the Environment Agency, moving Wessex into the list was majorly due to this reason. "Despite some heavy rain over the past two weeks, it has not been enough to refill our rivers and aquifers. River levels across our Wessex area are exceptionally low – many showing the lowest flows on record," said the agency in a statement. Read more: UK issues new amber heat warning for England and Wales "This places incredible strain on local wildlife and this is why we are moving to drought status. We are prioritising our local operations to minimise impacts on the environment.” it further added. Such has been the condition that authorities have been forced to clock in desperate measures. Six water companies across England have announced hosepipe bans to reduce water shortage and ensure that drought-stricken areas do not run out of water. Read more: Hosepipe ban begins in parts of southern England to protect river habitats July was quite a challenge for the UK as it was the driest July for England since 1935. Serena Williams swept into the US Open second round on Monday on an emotional night in New York in what is expected to be the 23-time Grand Slam title winner's final tournament.

The 40-year-old defeated Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 6-3, 6-3 in front of more than 23,000 fans on Arthur Ashe Stadium Court.

Former world number one Williams had won just one match on tour all year and seen her ranking slip to 605.

Kovinic, the world number 80, has enjoyed a solid year at the Slams, reaching the third round of the Australian and French Opens.

US Open: Serena Williams starts farewell campaign with win over Danka Kovinic

In a rare happening, a Chinese think tank has issued a public discord with Beijing's communist party's severe "zero-Covid" policy and said that the curbs must change.

The report has since been taken down. However, even such mild public disagreement with official policy is nearly unheard of. More so in such a politically charged year in which the Chinese premier Xi Jinping is anticipated to try to extend his presidency.

As per an AP report, the think tank in question is the Anbound Research Center and while the organisation mentioned "changes" are needed to prevent an "economic stall" it failed to provide details.

Xi Jinping's 'zero-covid' policy faces rare public criticism

A day before Russia shuts the all-important Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline which runs from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea, German chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Germany could counter the Russian gas threat.

A day before Russia shuts the all-important Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline which runs from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea, German chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Germany could counter the Russian gas threat. "Germany is in a much better position in terms of security of supply than was foreseeable a couple of months ago," Scholz told reporters on Tuesday. "We can deal well with the threats we are confronted with from Russia, which uses gas as part of its strategy in the war against Ukraine." he further added. Read more: Gazprom to reduce gas deliveries to Engie, France's biggest gas supplier Olaf's statements come a day after Economy Minister Robert Habeck stated that Germany had filled its gas reserves to almost 83 per cent. "Germany's gas storage facilities are nearly 83 per cent full and will hit 85 per cent full in early September. As a result, the markets will calm and go down" said Habeck. Nord Stream 1 will be shut down from tomorrow It is pertinent to note that the Russian state-owned gas company, earlier this month announced that the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline will remain shut down for three days for 'routine maintenance', starting tomorrow i.e August 31. In the backdrop of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Germany, much like the other European nations picked Kyiv's side. However, despite talking tough against Russia, Berlin still hasn't been able to get rid of Russian oil and gas, which accounted for more than 55 per cent of its requirement in 2021. Moreover, since February, the supplies from Russia have been reduced by more than 30 per cent, leading to an acute energy crisis in the country, with the price of oil and gas rising by almost four per cent compared to last year. Germany, akin to several other European nations is scampering for alternatives and looking to build reserves. However, the process is lengthy and one that cannot be achieved over the course of a few months. The perilous energy situation had forced the German government to splurge $14.93 billion last month to bail out Uniper, its largest importer of Russian gas.
