Experts have warned that the UK's recession-threatened economy, which saw a rebound in July, may take a hit from the public holiday marking Queen Elizabeth II's funeral next week.

Following a 0.6 per cent drop in June, the nation's gross domestic product (GDP) saw an expansion of 0.2 per cent, reports AFP citing a statement by the Office for National Statistics.

Experts have attributed the June dip to a public holiday for Queen's platinum jubilee, which marked her 70 years on the throne. Now another public holiday is scheduled next week for her funeral.

"The feeble 0.2-percent bounce back in July was driven by weak GDP in June due in part to the loss of working days from the Jubilee long weekend," notes KPMG UK chief economist Yael Selfin.

"Looking ahead, the extra public holiday for the queen's funeral on September 19 has the potential to be more damaging for the economy than the extra day off for the Jubilee in June," said Samuel Tombs, chief UK economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has fueled a rather wild conspiracy theory after reports emerged suggesting that top chess player Hans Niemann, 19 might be cheating to win his matches. Reportedly, Musk took to his Twitter account to suggest that Niemann might be using 'anal beads' to beat the system and avoid getting detected by the tournament organisers. Musk tweeted the video of a content creator claiming that Hans might have been using anal beads. The creator tweeted the video with the caption, "Currently obsessed with the notion that Hans Niemann has been cheating at the Sinquefield Cup chess tournament using wireless anal beads that vibrate him the correct moves." Re-sharing the post with the quote of a German philosopher named Arthur Schopenhauer, Musk wrote, “Talent hits a target no one else can hit, genius hits a target no one can see (cause it’s in your butt)” – Schopenhauer.” Since then, Musk has deleted his tweet but the archived version as well as the screenshots continue to do the rounds of internet. It is pertinent to note that Niemann shocked the Chess world earlier this week by defeating five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen, 31 in the $500,000 Sinquefield Cup, an annual chess tournament held in Saint Louis. Afterward, Carlsen quit the tournament which added fuel to the fire. While Carlsen did not cite any reason for quitting the tournament, most fans believed that it was because of Niemann. I've always enjoyed playing in the @STLChessClub, and hope to be back in the future https://t.co/YFSpl8er3u — Magnus Carlsen (@MagnusCarlsen) September 5, 2022 × After the controversy snowballed, Niemann, who is a Grandmaster as well, stated that he will strip naked if it is what it took to plead his innocence. "If they want me to strip fully naked, I will do it. I don’t care. Because I know I am clean. You want me to play in a closed box with zero electronic transmission, I don’t care." The 19-year-old made it clear that he did cheat once by using computer assistance when playing online as a child, but he had not resorted to unfair means in the tournament. Read more: Deal reached in 'Queen's Gambit' defamation suit against Netflix It is pertinent to note that chess players in tournaments as big as the Sinquefield Cup go through multiple rounds of screening before making it to their designated table and chair. Moreover, the anti-cheating protocol of the tournament includes a 15-minute delay in the broadcast of moves and radio-frequency identification checks. Carlsen's form in recent months has been shaky. He lost against young Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa. Meanwhile, Musk is infamous for tweeting innate things just for laughs and gags. Thus, a section of netizens believes that there is not much substance in the conspiracy theories floating around regarding the anal beads. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

In a rather welcome move to make higher education accessible to all, New jersey's Princeton University earlier this week announced that students whose parents earn less than $100,000 per year will have to no longer pay any expenses to attend college. The move is aimed at increasing the 'socioeconomic diversity' of the Ivy League campus, according to the school administrators. Princeton University, whose notable alumni include Former First lady Michelle Obama, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor amongst others will no longer accept any payment from students belonging to the aforementioned income bracket. The move is expected to help over 25 per cent of the university's undergraduates. Reportedly, over 1,500 students will receive full financial aid that covers their tuition, room, and board expenses. "One of Princeton's defining values is our commitment to ensure that talented students from all backgrounds can not only afford a Princeton education but can flourish on our campus and in the world beyond it," stated Christopher L. Under this contribution, students were expected to pay a portion of tuition and expenses with their own savings and on-campus work. Instead, students will have increased financial aid for books and other personal allowance, "These improvements to our aid packages, made possible by the sustained generosity of our alumni and friends, will enhance the experiences of students during their time at Princeton and their choices and impact after they graduate." As Europe deals with rising energy prices, the crisis will force the Eiffel Tower, one of the most visited monuments in the world, whose sparkling lights characterise the night time in the Paris skyline, to go dark early.

However, to honour Queen Elisabeth II's passing on Thursday night, the Eiffel Tower went dark, a remarkable gesture.

US: 9/11 attack mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed still awaits trial, victims wait for closure

It's been over one month since the devastating floods in Pakistan began. The situation got worse when 200 families in Sukkur, Sindh province, of the country, protested after a six-year-old girl died at a temporary shelter due to hunger and illness.

The protesters claimed that the authorities failed to give them proper food and other relief commodities in time, the Dawn reported.

People were eagerly awaiting official assistance after arriving in Sukkur. Families said that officials came to gather information but didn't send any aid, including food, medicine, and tents so that the children could be fed. The protesters further claimed that no medical assistance arrived to check on women and children who had been afflicted with illness due to rain.

Pakistan floods: 200 families protest against administration after six-year-old girl dies of hunger

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan on Saturday escaped a plane crash after the airplane carrying him developed technical snag mid-air. Reportedly, the plane was forced to make an emergency landing.

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan on Saturday escaped a plane crash after the airplane carrying him developed technical snag mid-air. Reportedly, the plane was forced to make an emergency landing. Local Pakistani news sources have claimed that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief was en route to Gujranwala to address a rally when the incident occurred. Accordingly, the pilot contacted the control tower and decided to complete the emergency landing. It was a special plane that was ferrying Imran Khan to the rally. Afterward, he took the road route to reach his destination. However, PTI leader Azhar Mashwani on Sunday took to social media to iterate that Imran Khan returned to the capital city soon after the plane took off, due to 'bad weather conditions', refuting the claims made by the local media. چئیرمین عمران خان کا طیارہ موسم کی خراب صورتحال کی وجہ سے اڑان بھرنے کی کچھ دیر بعد واپس اسلام آباد اتارا گیا طیارے میں کسی قسم کی فنی خرابی کی اطلاعات غلط ہیں - @umer_sultan چئیرمین براستہ سڑک گوجرانولہ روانہ ہوئے — Azhar Mashwani (@MashwaniAzhar) September 10, 2022 × The incident comes a couple of days before Imran Khan's pre-arrest bail expires in a terrorism-related case. It is pertinent to note that Imran Khan and his aides are currently embroiled in court cases where a plethora of charges, ranging from sedition to terrorism have been imposed. Read more: Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan booked under anti-terrorism charges As reported by WION, the charges against Khan are related to what police said was a threat to the Islamabad police chief and a female judge after Khan spoke about police torture of an aide who faces sedition charges for allegedly inciting mutiny in the military. However, despite being in a judicial crunch at the time, Imran has been at his aggressive best. Earlier this week, the PTI chief issued a warning that he would become more dangerous if the authorities send him to jail. "They have been trying to put me in jail for long now. I will be more dangerous if they send me to jail," said Imran Khan before appearing for a court hearing. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda has said he will hold a referendum to decide the republic status of the country within three years.

PM Gaston Browne made the statement after he signed a document that confirmed Charles III as the new king.

Stating that the Caribbean country will retain a British monarch, for now, PM Browne added, “This is not an act of hostility or any difference between Antigua and Barbuda and the monarchy, but it is the final step to complete that circle of independence, to ensure that we are truly a sovereign nation."

When asked the time frame to complete the referendum process, Browne said, “I’d say probably within the next three years.”

It is pertinent to note that despite being a sovereign nation with a democratic setup, Antigua and Barbuda's head of state remains the Queen or King of the UK. Succinctly put, the former British colony is not a republic but a constitutional monarchy.

Apart from Antigua and Barbuda, countries like Australia, and Canada are also still constitutional monarchies. Earlier in the day, both countries proclaimed Charles III as their King as well.

The US Navy on Wednesday, responding to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed by a YouTube channel remarked that it will not be releasing the unseen videos of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) or unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) as the US government prefers to call it, in the public domain.

“The release of this information will harm national security as it may provide adversaries valuable information regarding Department of Defense/Navy operations, vulnerabilities, and/or capabilities. No portions of the videos can be segregated for release,” said Gregory Cason, deputy director of the Navy's FOIA office in a written response. Reportedly, The Black Vault, a self-proclaimed government transparency website and YouTube channel had filed the request two years ago where it solicited the release of videos. In Pics | UNBELIEVABLE, but claimed to be REAL: Here are some popular and intriguing UFO sightings The US Navy responded two years later and accepted that UFO videos did exist but denied releasing them for public consumption. The US Navy also made it clear why it had released the previous three UAP videos and why it wouldn't release the one's that The Black vault asked for. “While three UAP videos were released in the past, the facts specific to those three videos are unique in that those videos were initially released via unofficial channels before official release,” read the report. “Those events were discussed extensively in the public domain; in fact, major news outlets conducted specials on these events. Given the amount of information in the public domain regarding these encounters, it was possible to release the files without further damage to national security,” it further added. As reported by WION, earlier this year in May, top Pentagon officials showed unexplained UFO videos. Ronald Moultrie and Scott Bray, two top officials of the Pentagon appeared before US House of Representatives intelligence subcommittee and showed the declassified UFO videos. Read more: Pentagon shows declassified UFO videos to US Congress in public hearing In one clip, a flashing triangle-shaped object in the night sky was seen. The other showed a shiny, spherical object zipping past the cockpit window of a military aircraft. The duo testified that reports of UFOs are 'frequent' and have been on the rise for more than a decade. However, they also added that US officials are unable to explain some of these sightings. "There are a small handful of cases in which we have more data that our analysis simply hasn't been able to fully pull together a picture of what happened," Scott Bray told the committee. UFO sightings have long fascinated the public across the planet. There have been numerous instances where people have sworn to have witnessed an extraterrestrial vehicle. However, so far, no concrete proof apart from the videos has come out in the public domain. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Hours after Russia's defence ministry announced on Saturday that the country was pulling back its troops from two areas in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed it to be a victory and talked down the Russians. Reportedly in a video post on Facebook, Zelensky gloated that the Russians were running scared ever since the Ukrainian soldiers gained access to a vital Russian supply hub. “These days, the Russian army is showing its best showing its back. And, in the end, it is a good choice for them to run away. There is and will be no place for the occupiers in Ukraine,” he said. The Ukrainian President further added that his troops had swept and liberated more than 2,000 square kilometres (770 square miles) of area since the month started. “The movement of our soldiers in different directions of the front continues. As of now, as part of active actions since the beginning of September, about 2,000 square kilometres (770 square miles) of our territory has already been liberated,” he said. × "I'm thankful to the troops of the 214th separate rifle battalion for securing the situation in Balakliya, who, together with units of the Main Intelligence Directorate, Special Operations Forces, special forces of the National Guard and the police, returned full control to the city. “I’m thankful to all our defenders, who during these weeks made the approach of our victory even more tangible!” Zelensky signed off as saying. As reported by WION, following the significant advances made by Ukrainian soldiers in Kharkiv, Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said the troops would be regrouped from the Balakliya and Izyum areas. Read more: Kharkiv: After Kyiv severs supply line, Russian grip on northeast Ukraine collapses "To achieve the stated goals of the Special Military Operation for the liberation of Donbas, it was decided to regroup the Russian troops located in the districts of Balakliia and Izium for the purpose of increasing efforts in the Donetsk direction," Russian defence ministry was quoted as saying by state-run news agency TASS. Since bursting through the frontline earlier this week, Ukrainian forces have recaptured dozens of towns and villages held by Russia for months. Marking Russia's biggest battlefield defeat since its forces were forced to abandon their assault on the capital Kyiv in March, the claim of pullback to concentrate on Donetsk is similar to the justification given by Kremlin for Ukraine's capital. A newly published research has revealed how air pollution can cause lung cancer in individuals who have never smoked in their lives. The findings of the research could help the medical industry in preventing and treating tumours by rewriting our understanding of them.

Reportedly, the scientists found that fine particulates in polluted air activated the dormant, pre-existing cancer genes in the lungs of an individual which were inflamed due to inhaling the polluted air.

The research helps in the understanding of medical experts as to why so many non-smokers tend to develop lung cancer or tumours.

The researchers of the study remarked that although smoking remains the primary cause of lung cancer, the fact that air pollution activates dormant cancer genes should be a 'wake-up' call for everyone.

"Globally, more people are exposed to unsafe levels of air pollution than to toxic chemicals in cigarette smoke, and these new data link the importance of addressing climate health to improving human health," said Professor Charles Swanton of the Francis Crick Institute.

The long-term study was conducted by Francis Crick Institute with Cancer Research UK funding the $16 million project. For the research, the scientists analysed a pool of over 400,000 people from the UK, Taiwan, and South Korea by measuring their exposure to PM 2.5.

“The mechanism we’ve identified could ultimately help us to find better ways to prevent and treat lung cancer in never smokers. The next step is to discover why some lung cells with mutations become cancerous when exposed to pollutants while others don’t.” added Professor Swanton.

The findings of the study come in the backdrop of another study conducted in Canada which revealed that even low levels of pollution can be extremely harmful and, in the long run, cause considerable health damage.

As reported by WION, the research carried out in Canada found that around 8000 people in the country die every year because of air pollution. It came as a surprise as Canada has generally accounted for extremely low levels of pollution in the past few decades.

The study took into account more than 7 million Canadian citizens between the years 1981 and 2016 along with the air pollution data in the same period of time.

Even after 21 years, the memories of September 11, or 9/11, remain the same: bitter, horrific, and of one of the worst encounters a country has had with terrorists.

This all began when, on September 11, 2001, two aircraft attacked the World Trade Center in New York, and a third aircraft crashed outside of Washington, DC, into the Pentagon while the fourth went down in Pennsylvania.

Who did this? Al-Qaeda, an Islamic extremist organisation led by Osama bin Laden and known for its terror, hijacked four aircraft and used them as a means for suicide attacks in the United States. It was claimed that Laden provided funds for the attack.

The attack claimed the lives of over 3,000 people and injured thousands more.

Here are some facts you need to know about the 9/11 attack:

The CIA had informed President Clinton in his daily brief on December 4, 1998, that Laden was preparing to hijack US aircraft and was planning to conduct strikes.

The World Trade Centre was targeted earlier. On February 26, 1993, a bomb was placed in a car parked at the World Trade Centre, which when blasted claimed the lives of six people and injured over a thousand people. The Sunni terrorist, Ramzi Yousef, who deactivated the device, revealed that he intended to kill over 250,000 people, DNA reported.

The US tried multiple attempts to kill Osama bin Laden before 9/11, but was delayed and then revived, but was hampered by military leaders' reservations about relying on Aghan tribal chiefs.

A little more than a year ago, the US troops haphazardly ditched the Afghanistan shores, leaving behind highly sophisticated military machinery that included state-of-the-art helicopters, tanks and armoured vehicles. Many believed that the Taliban might become unstoppable after gaining access to such machinery. A total of $18.6 billion of equipment was presented to the Afghani security forces in 16 years, starting from 2005. However, after Kabul collapsed as Talibani's descended upon the capital, the American troops could only salvage and ferry half of the equipment back to American shores. Aircraft worth $923.3 million, 9,524 air-to-ground munitions valued at $6.54 million, over 40,000 of the total 96,000 military vehicles, more than 300,000 weapons, and all night vision, surveillance, biometric and positioning equipment were left behind in Afghanistan. Despite that, it was always going to be a challenge for the Taliban to not only learn how to operate these machines and gadgets but also to service them. Following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on Thursday, Charles ascended to the throne forthwith. At a ceremony on Saturday at St. James's Palace in London, he was formally proclaimed King Charles III. There will be many more legal processes to take before his coronation, which might not happen for months. A look at the long-standing customs and guidelines that accompany the coronation of a new British monarch: WHO OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCES NEW MONARCHS? The Accession Council, made up of a sizable number of top politicians and officials, announces the death of a sovereign in Britain and the appointment of their successor. Traditionally, the council is called to a formal meeting at St. James's Palace within 24 hours of a monarch's passing. However, because the queen's passing was not made public until Thursday early evening, there was insufficient time to prepare the stage for Friday's coronation of King Charles III. Members of the Privy Council who are primarily living politicians, such as all living prime ministers, prominent royals and Church of England officials, as well as other ceremonial leaders like the Lord Mayor of London, make up the Accession Council. The practice of a monarch meeting privately with a group of advisors dates back to the era of the Norman monarchs and predates the present roles of a government cabinet. To supervise the proclamation of the new monarch, the entire Privy Council is traditionally summoned to the Accession Council. But since there are now 700 Privy Council members, just 200 were called on Saturday. The ceremony was broadcast live on television for the first time Saturday. AFTER CHARLES IS PROCLAIMED, WHAT HAPPENS? According to the Act of Union of 1707, the king has his first Privy Council meeting soon after being formally confirmed, makes a personal statement, and then swears to uphold the Church of Scotland. Following this, gun salutes are fired all around London as the proclamation of the new monarch is read aloud in public by a heraldic official known as the Garter King of Arms from a balcony of St. James's Palace. Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast — the capital cities of the other three countries that make up the United Kingdom — are among the venues throughout the U.K. where the declaration is also read aloud. For roughly 24 hours, Union flags will be flown at full staff before lowering to half-staff as a sign of respect for the monarch. Senior legislators then take an oath of fealty to the new monarch when Parliament is swiftly called back. The new monarch must take a second oath affirming his loyalty to the Protestant faith and his commitment to upholding the Protestant succession during the state opening of Parliament. The Accession Declaration Act of 1910 requires that the oath be taken. THE CORONATION, WHAT ABOUT IT? The next major occasion—the king's coronation—will not occur for some months after the initial flurry of rituals. This is to give space for a period of grieving and give the ceremony's organisers time to plan. On February 6, 1952, when her father, King George VI, passed away, Queen Elizabeth II became monarch. She was crowned on June 2, 1953, some 16 months later.
