A witness who saw a University of Virginia student start fire on a bus returning from a field trip described to authorities how the shooter targeted specific victims, many of whom were football players, shooting one of them while he slept.

The information came to light at the suspect's initial court appearance, which took place on the same day the university made the decision to postpone its Saturday football game due to the fatal shooting.

After being shown a photograph of the shooting defendant, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., a witness recognised him as the shooter, according to the prosecution.

Three football players died on Sunday night, and one player and another student were injured.

Jones, a former football player, participated in the court proceeding on Wednesday by way of a video link from a nearby jail.

He claimed he would seek a lawyer and choose not to enter a plea to the many accusations he is facing.

In order to represent him while he seeks private legal representation, a judge assigned a public defender and ordered that he be held without bond.

Jones, who will turn 23 on Thursday, reportedly went on a field trip with about 20 other students from the Charlottesville campus on Sunday to watch a play in the nation's capital, approximately 195 kilometres away.

At noon, Tesla stock dropped 3 per cent.

"There's an initial burst of activity needed post-acquisition to reorganise the company," Musk said in his testimony. "But then I expect to reduce my time at Twitter."

A judge on Wednesday (November 16) sent to jail without parole the man who killed six and injured several when he drove his SUV through a Christmas parade.

The incident took place on November 21, 2021, when Darrell Brooks Jr. 40, drove over the parade in his red Ford Escape in downtown Waukesha. Six were killed including an eight-year-old child. Several others were severely injured.

The judge sentenced him on 76 charges, including six of first-degree intentional homicide and 61 counts of reckless endangerment. Jennifer Dorrow, Waukesha, County Circuit Judge, rejected all arguments from him and his family claiming that his mental illness made him do this, AP reported.

Each homicide carried a mandatory life sentence but no death penalty. The judge concluded 762 years in prison for Brooks. The gallery applauded as Dorrow announced the life sentences.

It was found that on November 21, Brooks left his house in anger after having a fight with his ex-girlfriend.

"Frankly, Mr. Brooks, no one is safe from you,” Dorrow said. “This community can only be safe if you are behind bars for the rest of your life. ... You left a path of destruction, chaos, death, injury and panic as you drove seven or so blocks through the Christmas parade."

However, before the judge handed the life sentences, Brooks claimed that he's been mentally ill since he was a child and that the incident that took place was not intentional. Rambling over his growing up with no father, poor, hungry and physically abused, he said that he has been dealing with illness all his life. In court, his mother and grandmother tried to persuade Dorrow to place Brooks in a mental institution rather than in prison. His grandmother claimed that Brooks had bipolar disorder and whatever that happened was not intentional. His mother, Dawn Woods tried persuading the judge to let Brooks receive treatment in prison.

Also read | Witness informs police UVA suspect targeted specific victims

Dorrow, before handing the sentences, said that she doesn't believe that Brooks is suffering from any mental illness. She said that four psychologists who evaluated him said that he suffers from an antisocial personality but not a mental illness. She added that whatever Brooks did was in anger and rage.

Offering his apologies to all the victims and to their families, Brooks said, " I want you to know that not only am I sorry for what happened, I’m sorry that you could not see what’s truly in my heart,” he said. “That you cannot see the remorse that I have."

A day prior to the hearing, Dorrow spent an entire day listening to the dozens of victims and their families to sentence Brooks maximum possible sentence.

Myanmar's military said Thursday it will release almost 6,000 prisoners, including a former British ambassador, a Japanese journalist and an Australian economics adviser, in a rare olive branch from the isolated junta. The Southeast Asian country has been in turmoil since the military's coup last year and a bloody crackdown on dissent during which thousands have been jailed.

Former British envoy Vicky Bowman, Australian economics adviser Sean Turnell and Japanese journalist Toru Kubota "will be released to mark National Day", a senior officer told AFP.

All three would be deported, the junta said without specifying a date.

Around 200 people had gathered outside the Insein prison in Yangon in the hope that their loved ones would be among those released, said AFP reporters who also saw several yellow buses enter the sprawling compound.

Altogether, 5,774 prisoners will be released, "including some 600 women", the junta official said, revising an earlier figure of about 700 women.

The junta did not say in its statement announcing the amnesty how many of those pardoned had been arrested during the military's crackdown on dissent.

Bowman, who served as ambassador from 2002 to 2006, was detained with her husband in August for failing to declare she was living at an address different from the one listed on her foreigner's registration certificate.

They were later jailed for a year. Her husband, prominent Myanmar artist Htein Lin, will also be released, the military official said.

A British diplomatic source said Bowman had not yet been released but they expected her to be freed. The junta statement did not list her husband among those due to be deported.

He and Suu Kyi were convicted in September by a closed junta court of breaching the Official Secrets Act and jailed for three years each.

"We welcome reports in relation to Professor Sean Turnell," Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on Twitter.

"Professor Turnell continues to be our first priority. As such, we will not be commenting further at this stage."

Japanese journalist Kubota, 26, was detained in July near an anti-government rally in Yangon along with two Myanmar citizens and jailed for 10 years.

A source at Japan's embassy in Myanmar told AFP they had "been informed that Mr. Kubota will be released today" by junta authorities.

Kubota would leave for Japan "today", they said. Kubota is the fifth foreign journalist to be detained in Myanmar since the coup, after US citizens Nathan Maung and Danny Fenster, Robert Bociaga of Poland and Yuki Kitazumi of Japan -- all of whom were later freed and deported.

At least 170 journalists have been arrested since the coup according to UNESCO, with nearly 70 still in detention.

One woman, who did not want to give her name for fear of reprisals, said she was waiting for her husband, who was halfway through a three-year sentence for encouraging dissent against the military.

"Earlier, he was a USDP (military-backed political party) supporter. After the coup, he joined the protests. I'm very proud of him," she said.

San San Aye said she was waiting for her brothers and sisters to be released.

"Three of them were sentenced to three years each, eight months ago," she told AFP.

"Their children are waiting at home. We will be more than happy if they are released."

Independent analyst David Mathieson told AFP: "Professor Turnell's release is remarkable news after being held hostage by the regime, and his family and friends will be delighted."

However, he said the junta "shows no sign of reform and a mass amnesty doesn't absolve them of atrocities committed since the coup".

Amnesty's regional office spokesperson said: "Thousands of people jailed since the coup in Myanmar have done nothing wrong and should never have been imprisoned in the first place."

Three former ministers from Suu Kyi's ousted government and detained US-Myanmar citizen Kyaw Htay Oo would also be released, the junta official said.

More than 2,300 civilians have been killed since the military's crackdown on dissent after it ousted Suu Kyi's government, according to a Myanmar monitoring group.

The junta blames anti-coup fighters for the death of almost 3,900 civilians.

Also read | ASEAN still struggling to find solution for Myanmar crisis Around 200 people had gathered outside the Insein prison in Yangon in the hope that their loved ones would be among those released, said AFP reporters who also saw several yellow buses enter the sprawling compound. Officials of Yale's and Harvard's law school have announced that they will no longer be participating in US News and World Report's annual rankings of the top law schools in the world, saying its ‘methodologies are profoundly flawed’.

CBS News quoted an official from the Yale, Dean Heather K Gerken, saying in a blog post that the methodology adopted for the ranking list is "profoundly flawed". She said, "We have reached a point where the rankings process is undermining the core commitments of the legal profession," noting that the school "has taken the top spot every year" since the rankings began. "As a result, we will no longer participate."

Gerken said that the list discourages low-income students or public service aspiring students to pursue courses as it excludes loan-forgiveness programmes in student debts. The Public Service Programmes Loan Forgiveness was introduced in 2007 for forgiving loans for American students who wish to work in public service jobs.

The officials further said that the rankings list discourages universities from admitting low-income background students. For example, one such measure is "reputation" or how the college deals with rival colleges. The critics argued that this has little to do with the college's ability to educate its students. Another instance critics found was that it reinforces income inequality, hence reducing diversity among students.

Harvard's Dean John Manning in a mail sent to CBS News said that it will also be wilfully dropping out from the list, "because it has become impossible to reconcile our principles and commitments with the methodology and incentives the US News rankings reflect."

Neither Yale nor Harvard will be harmed by withdrawing their names from the list, given their strong global positions, and successful, renowned alumni. Yale's alumni include former US President Bill Clinton and four of the US Supreme Court judges. Both also have a budget to help students from low-income backgrounds. Harvard's plan stands at $50 billion while that of Yale is around $41 billion.

The US News and World Report were earlier criticised after the University of Colombia submitted inaccurate data to bolster its ranking. Further, it said that it will not be providing any information for the list. Despite this decision, the university was able to secure the second rank, with Ivy League School's rank tumbling to 18.

A Palestinian was hailed as a hero by Islamists after he killed three Israelis near a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank, a few hours before Benjamin Netanyahu returned to power with a right wing coalition.

The killing took place at Ariel's settlement's industrial zone where a man who was allegedly carrying a knife killed the three individuals. The man was later shot dead by one of the soldiers in the area.

However, the rise in control of Ben-Gvir came as worry for Arabs in Israel over his racist incitement and support for an outlawed Jewish militant group. Islamic televangelist and sex cult leader sentenced to 8,658 years in prison by Turkish court

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has found himself in soup after deleting a tweet where he falsely stated that the Iranian regime had sentenced 15,000 protesters to death.

Reportedly, the inaccurate tweet was shared by Trudeau's official Twitter account and remained live for more than 12 hours before being deleted.

The claim that Iran's regime sentenced 15,000 people to death has been swirling across social media platforms for some days and Trudeau became one of the major personalities to fall for it.

The Prime Minister's Office released a statement confirming that the tweet was deleted based on “initial reporting” that “lacked necessary context", stopping short of apologising for the gaffe.

“It [the tweet] was based on reporting of serious concerns raised by international human rights advocates warning of possible future sentences, including the death penalty, imposed on thousands of Iranian protesters who have already been detained by the regime,” said a government spokesperson.

In the now-deleted tweet, Trudeau said, “Canada denounces the Iranian regime’s barbaric decision to impose the death penalty on nearly 15,000 protestors,” Trudeau’s now-deleted tweet read.

“These brave Iranians were fighting for their human rights – and we continue to stand united in support of them, and united against the regime’s heinous actions," he added.

Not only Trudeau, but Hollywood celebrities such as Sophie Turner and Viola Davis have also shared and amplified the false news. However, the claim that 15,000 have been sentenced to death is objectively false as there is no evidence backing it up.

An Iranian court on Monday, however, issued the first death sentence linked to recent protests. Reportedly, the protester was convicted of “enmity against God” and “spreading corruption on Earth".

Even then, according to state media, the ruling is preliminary and the unnamed person has the right to appeal it in higher courts.

As reported by WION, Trudeau has actively campaigned against the Iranian government ever since the death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini started a nationwide protest.

Last month, Trudeau marched alongside demonstrators in the Canadian capital of Ottawa and protested against the Iranian regime.

"We will stand with you. I'll march with you, I will hold hands with you. We will continue to stand with this beautiful community," Trudeau said, before ending his speech by shouting Persian slogans, his fist raised.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has found himself in soup after deleting a tweet where he falsely stated that the Iranian regime had sentenced 15,000 protesters to death.

WATCH | Court in Iran issues first death sentence amid anti-hijab protests × Even then, according to state media, the ruling is preliminary and the unnamed person has the right to appeal it in higher courts. The India-China border standoff has been ongoing for more than two years. In an attempt to keep up with the enemy and remain prepared for any eventuality at any time, the Indian Army has come up with a major infrastructure build-up plan.

Reportedly, the Indian Army will be constructing modular, 3D-printed next-generation bunkers to provide additional protection to the troops in the Ladakh sector of the country, along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

According to reports, the structure will be strong enough to withstand a direct hit from a T-90 tank from mere 100 metres. The officials associated with the matter added that bunkers have undergone extensive trials in the western sector (Rajasthan) and eastern Ladakh.

France is reportedly planning its biggest-ever military exercise. As per an AFP report, it will involve 12,000 troops, including NATO allies Germany, Britain, Belgium, Italy and Spain, along with the United States and will happen in the first half of next year.

The wargames are called Orion and come against the background of the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war. As per a senior French official, they are justified because of the geopolitical context.

"The geopolitical context justifies this exercise," said Yves Metayer, commander of the troop deployment division at the French chiefs of staff.

He added that the scenario plans for a major confrontation with an unspecified foreign state and that the plan had been in development since 2020 and was a culmination of a French strategic review that was released in 2017.

While the date for picking the next Pakistan Army chief draws closer and the new appointee still not finalised, the Shehbaz Sharif government is mulling amending the laws to have greater authority over the re-appointment of the army boss and other officers. Reportedly, the Sharif administration is willing to amend the Pakistan Army Act (PAA) 1952 which will allow the prime minister to retain any serving officer through a simple notification. Currently, the constitutional process is complex as well as tedious. According to local media reports, the proposed changes were already approved by the ministry of defence last month.
