Satirical take on Turkey quakes sparks outrage

The recent layoffs at big tech firms show a clear target: the middle manager, according to a Bloomberg report.

As big tech firms like Meta, Google, Microsoft and other Silicon Valley giants took to layoffs to lower costs, a report revealed a startling stat - the 'Middle Managers' are the target.

On Wednesday, Meta's Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said the company would be firing some layers of management during a tough year, which he named a "year of efficiency".

That comes after the tech giant cut 11,000 jobs last year, or about 13 per cent of its workforce and called those layoffs "just the beginning".

In addition to layoffs, Intel cut its managers' and executives' pay in anticipation of a sharp fall in computer demand.

Beyond tech firms, similar trends were seen in other large companies on job cuts.

A Slack Technologies survey showed employees in the 'middle management' are the most worked. The survey also showed that over 40 per cent of middle managers are already 'burned out'.

In addition to handling dictates from their bosses "to do more with fewer resources", they have had to deal with their reports.

They have had to implement changing and challenging "return to the office" policies and balance between "work from home and the office" or the hybrid work of their junior.

The changing dynamics in the tech world on management and the importance of those roles beyond core engineering teams are more evident with Twitter after Elon Musk took over.

Musk fired over 7,000 staff and said, "there seem to be ten people 'managing' for every one-person coding". That was in response to a question on "what was the most messed up in Twitter" back then.

Words like restructuring, reorganising, more efficient, agile, lean, and mean are what companies are using to lower costs and cut jobs.

Layoffs: Which jobs, in particular, are at risk?

A fire that engulfed hundreds of shipping containers at Turkey's Iskenderun Port after massive earthquakes in the region has been extinguished, the defence ministry said on Tuesday, but it was not clear when operations would resume at the port.

Turkey's maritime authority said on Monday that the port, located on the Mediterranean coast in the southern province of Hatay, was damaged due to the earthquake that struck Turkey and neighbouring Syria.

Drone footage showed fierce flames blackening hundreds of containers on the dock, with water jets from a fire truck dwarfed by the scale of the blaze that broke out on Monday. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky.

Turkish shipping agency Tribeca said earlier on Tuesday some cargo areas of Limak port at the Iskenderun complex were still on fire.

The blaze led to the shutdown of all operations at the terminal until further notice and forced freight liners to divert vessels to other ports.

The defence ministry said later on Tuesday the fire was put out thanks to efforts by military helicopters and planes after Monday's efforts to douse the flames from offshore failed.

Leading global container shipping group AP Moller Maersk said there had been significant damage to logistics and transport infrastructure around the earthquake epicentre, including at the Port of Iskenderun.

It said it was looking to re-route ships as needed, given the "severe structural damage, leading to a complete stop of all operations until further notice".

"We will need to perform a change of destination for all bookings bound for the port or already on the water. We are currently planning to divert containers to nearby hubs within operational feasibility or hold at transhipment ports - including Port of Mersin (in Turkey) and Port Said (in Egypt)."

Maersk added in an updated advisory on Tuesday that a fire broke out among containers at the terminal on Monday evening after the earthquake struck and the company was working to assess the potential loss of cargo.

"It's not yet known how long recovery efforts will take and when the port can undergo a full inspection of the damage."

German container shipping line Hapag Lloyd said it was taking shipments from Mersin given the closure of Iskenderun.

A source from a container broker said the fire most likely originated in a container filled with flammable industrial oil, judging by the flames and smoke.

Other containers were toppled on their sides, thwarting access to the emergency services. Authorities had tried in vain to tackle the fire by boat on Monday, with damage nearby from the quake hampering access to the site.

More than 1,200 buildings were destroyed by the earthquake in Hatay province alone.

Iskenderun hosts heavy industries such as steel and is one of the two major container hubs on Turkey's southeastern shores. The port focuses especially on domestic Turkish trade, rather than having a broader regional hub role, according to a shipping source.

Following inspections of damage after the earthquake, the maritime authority said on Monday that operations were continuing in ports apart from Iskenderun.

Massive fire at Turkey's Iskenderun Port extinguished: Defence Ministry

Syria has thanked India for sending humanitarian support in the aftermath of the earthquake that impacted the country. A devastating quake hit southern Turkey that also had a huge impact in northern Syria, with thousands feared dead. Speaking to our diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Syrian Ambassador Dr Bassam Alkhatib said, "we really appreciate people, Government of India for support, this is the voice of the south we want to see in the future".

India is sending a plane load of humanitarian support to the country, even as the ambassador hoped, "another plane going to Syria with more humanitarian assistance". Yesterday, Indian and Syrian foreign ministers established contacts as New Delhi stepped up its efforts to help the country.

On the sanctions against the country, the ambassador explained, "The government, countries who impose such sanctions, they know well that they are behind the suffering of Syrian people with such sanctions."

Here's the complete conversation:

WION: What is the current situation on the ground?

Dr Bassam Alkhatib: Unluckily it's a devastating situation, a big earthquake impacted many areas of Syria. The last number I received, was 850 death and thousands of casualties of different levels. Many buildings are in ruins, many people are still trapped under the said ruins and everybody in Syria is doing all the possible best to handle the situation. The President, when he heard held a meeting of all the authorities relevant to the situation. The foreign minister also held another meeting with representatives of international organisations. With the help of many friendly countries, we have started to handle the situation. The situation is still sensitive.

WION: How do you view India's support?

Dr Bassam Alkhatib: I would love to start by saying that I was attending a successful meeting in Bangalore under the honourable attendance of the PM. When I heard the news, I started coordinating with the people in Syria and India. The fast good, generous response by the Government of India is really unique. Later on, the Indian PM wrote a message of condolences to Syria. The foreign ministers in both countries contacted each other and the high-ranking officials in the MEA, and by the end of yesterday, the plan was ready, and the decision was taken successfully. The visit of the Mos MEA to the embassy is a message from the people and the Government of India towards the people and the Government of Syria. We are with you; we are keeping the position of India with you, and I can say within less than an hour a plane is leaving the Delhi airport of Delhi, going to Syria full of assistance and equipment.

WION: Can you tell us about the international assistance Syria is receiving?

Dr Bassam Alkhatib: Everybody knows we have friends around the world, and all of them took the right position to be with Syria. I am not going to name countries. Some of them have sent three planes full of assistance. Hopefully, India is now contemplating sending a second plane to Syria. The first one is going right now.

WION: Has the Israeli PM offered support to Syria?

Dr Bassam Alkhatib: The source of the problem and evils for Syria is the Israeli occupation of our land, so such statements are nonsense.

WION: How is Syria coordinating with Turkey?

Dr Bassam Alkhatib: For us in Syria, we do believe human beings are human beings. We have no problem with the people of Turkey. We don't want to see the people of Turkey suffering.

WION: What kind of coordination were you looking for from Delhi?

Dr Bassam Alkhatib: Absolutely. Even as I was attending the important conference, I was making contact with everyone in India and Syria. So I have just said, colleagues at the MEA had made contact every hour. Late last night, I was able to make contact between the two foreign ministers, and luckily the result you know, the plane is moving to Syria. We really appreciate the people and the Government of India for their support. This is the voice of the south we want to see in the future.

WION: How much will the sanctions against your country impact the relief and rescue operations in your country?

Dr Bassam Alkhatib: Those sanctions are not only impacting the Syrian government but mainly impact the Syrian people. The government, and countries who impose such sanctions, know well that they are behind the suffering of the Syrian people. But when it comes to honest and independent countries, in decisions and policies like India, it is easy to find solutions to any problem, including these sanctions. We appreciate you coming, and we appreciate the visit of MoS MEA. We really appreciate the Indian heart.

WION: Russia has also extended support to your country in the aftermath of the earthquake?

Dr Bassam Alkhatib: At the high level, the President of Russia call soon, the President of Syria and then many planes and all kinds of assistance were announced. I trust they will help.

Train counting scam: Delhi police arrest two men for cheating railway job seekers

It's a familiar site every day to see kids as young as five or six carrying a heavy-leather backpack loaded with textbooks. Earlier it was considered fine, but children in Japan are speaking out, complaining that their backpacks are so heavy that they leave them with sore backs and shoulders.

The concept of bags was initially introduced to encourage kids to walk to and from schools and was made compulsory through their first six years of education. It was originally used by Japanese foot soldiers and was first taken by schoolchildren in the 1800s.

The report conducted a survey of 1,200 parents and their first, second and third-grade kids. The Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun said that around 93 per cent of kids that their bags are too heavy.

Some 65 per cent of respondents said that they would like to trade bags for something lighter.

The newspaper added that the average weight of a backpack filled with textbooks was around 4.28 kg in 2022. Some also struggled with backpacks weighing over 10 kg.

The survey also showed that it was just not kids complaining, even parents were upset, but about its hefty price tag. According to them, in 2022 an average bag cost around ¥56,425 ($353). The price range has increased by almost ¥20,000 ($151) over the past 10 years.

Responding to the complaints, some local authorities have allowed children to leave their textbooks in their classrooms overnight particularly during their summer months, despite the fact that it might discourage them to do their homework.

Responding to the complaints, some local authorities have allowed children to leave their textbooks in their classrooms overnight particularly during their summer months, despite the fact that it might discourage them to do their homework. The past few weeks ChatGPT and the "miraculous" writing it is capable of have been everywhere; from writing poems, and essays to telling people jokes, it's doing everything. Now, a Princeton University student has come up with an application called "GPTZero", that can sort through AI and human-written text. Here's why it's important.

While most people have been touting its uses as a platform that can "pen down" whatever you ask from it, others have raised alarm over ChatGPT's use in the writing of academic papers, student assignments, etc.

Contrary to popular belief abortion is healthcare; which should be available to all women irrespective of their social and economic status. However, a study has found that Google ads promoting anti-abortion have been targeting low-income women.

Researchers at the Tech Transparency Project have claimed that low-income women in some cities are more likely to be targeted for anti-abortion centre ads when searching for abortion care, Guardian reported.

Katie Paul, the director of the transparency project said, "by pointing low-income women to crisis pregnancy centres more frequently than higher-income women in states with restrictive laws, Google may delay these women from finding an actual abortion clinic to get a legal and safe abortion."

This research is based on previous findings that gave a brief on how Google directs users searching for abortion services to so-called abortion crisis pregnancy centres that pose as abortion clinics to steer women away from accessing abortion centres.

The results are based on the test that was set up in Atlanta, Miami and Phoenix targeting women of three income groups suggested by the tech giant which included: average or low-income rate, moderately high-income rate and high-income rate.

Women were asked to search terms like "abortion clinic near me" or "I want an abortion."

In Phoneix, 56 per cent of the search ads shown to low-to-moderate income were of crisis centres, 41 per cent of ads served moderately high-income and 7 per cent for high income.

In Atlanta, 42 per cent of the ads were shown to lower-income women, compared to 18 per cent and 29 per cent for moderately high-income women and high-income women respectively.

However, the results were inverse in the case of Miami. Researchers found that high-income women were more likely to get ads from crisis centres than lower-income women.

Researchers are not certain as to why results in Miami are different from Atlanta and Phoenix but suspect that crisis pregnancy centres might be more active in abortion-restrictive states. Both Florida and Arizona have banned abortion after 15 weeks.

Paul said that many users don't realise that they are being targeted by Google.

"Google has a large share of influence, particularly in the United States when people are trying to search for authoritative information. And people generally tend to consider Google’s search engine as an equaliser. They think the results they get are the results that everyone’s going to get. But that’s just not the case."

The tech giant has been under fire since last year over its search engine and has been repeatedly asked to make changes.

A massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake has wrought widespread destruction in Turkey and Syria. The latest counts have put the death toll at around 3,700 people. However, it is expected that this figure may reach 10,000, as many people are still trapped under the rubble.

The earthquake has brought down massive multi-storey buildings and whole apartment blocks.

As per Reuters, this is the worst tremor to hit Turkey this century. In war-hit Syria, it has only added to the devastation already being borne by millions of Syrians who for 11 years have been plagued by war.

Death toll from Syria-Turkey earthquake crosses 3,700; international community steps in to help

Before the Turkiye and Syria disaster, there had been a series of not strong earthquakes in Asia, especially in countries that lie along the seismic zone. The earthquakes and tremors were worryingly becoming frequent, even tremors were felt here in India twice in a span of a month. The world was not paying attention to the frequency of these Earth shakes until Monday 6th of February when the severity of the earthquakes was felt globally. But can the aftermath of what is caused by earthquakes be avoided, and is there something bigger that is hidden in the faultline? WION's Eric Njoka speaks to geologists Namik Cagatay and Chris Elders for a perspective.

Debates in the French parliament began on Monday (Feb 06) on President Emmanuel Macron's proposed pension reform as the government defends its project, Reuters reported. The European country is about to face its third nationwide strike on Tuesday (Feb 07) since the reforms were introduced last month which will raise the pension age by two years to 64.

On Monday as Labour Minister Olivier Dussopt opened his remarks, opposition MPs began shouting intending to interrupt. Dussopt said, "I know this reform is difficult but I know that undertaking it is showing the courage others have lacked."

Thousands of teachers, and railway workers have been protesting opposing the decision and demanding a raise in revenue. Unions said that there are two ways to increase the revenue such as taxing the super-rich or can ask employers or well-off pensioners to contribute more.

According to Labour Ministry, the pension system reforms would yield almost $19.18 billion in annual pension contributions.

A federal judge in Oklahoma on Monday concluded a federal law prohibiting marijuana users from possessing guns is unconstitutional. US District Judge Patrick Wyrick on Friday dismissed an indictment that was passed last year against Jared Harrison, who was charged with violating that ban, saying that it infringes his right to bear arms under the Constitution's Second Amendment.

Wyrick said that the US government can protect the citizens from dangerous people possessing guns, but could not argue on Harrison's "mere status as a user of marijuana justifies stripping him of his fundamental right to possess a firearm." He added that the use of marijuana is "not in and of itself a violent, forceful, or threatening act," and highlighted that in Oklahoma the use of drugs is illegal under federal law, and can be legally bought for medical uses.
