Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha on Thursday (June 20) claimed that the prime accused who was arrested in the alleged NEET paper leak case was connected to the officials close to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav.&nbsp;

Sinha while addressing a press conference stated that the official was constantly in touch with Sikander Prasad Yadvendu, the prime accused arrested by the police. He also demanded&nbsp;a probe into the matter.

“The official associated with Yadav used to arrange ated byccommodation for Sikandar at guest houses in Patna and other places. I have details of messages which the official had sent to the persons concerned for arranging accommodation for Sikandar,” the deputy chief minister said.

He said he had the number from where the messages were sent.

"It needs to be thoroughly probed. Why is the RJD leader (Tejashwi Prasad) maintaining a stoic silence on this?" Sinha questioned.

He said that certain reports were suggesting that the accused was also in touch with RJD supremo Lalu Prasad when he was in judicial custody in Ranchi.

The top court said that we cannot overlook the efforts of the children who have prepared for the exams.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court told the Centre and the NTA to approach challenges regarding NEET-UG as opportunities for improvement, not hostile legal battles. The judges further emphasised the importance of acknowledging and rectifying any errors made during the exam's administration.

The top court further told the NTA, "You are conducting the examination and you must act fair. If there is a mistake, say yes, this is a mistake, and this is the action we are going to take. At least that motivates confidence in your performance."

The Supreme Court is hearing a batch of petitions&nbsp;which allege&nbsp;paper leaks, awarding grace marks and a significant increase in high scorers.&nbsp;

Additional Director General of Police, EOU, N H Khan told the Indian Express, that they had asked a set of questions to the National Testing Agency (NTA), which organises the NEET exam, and while they might have some follow-ups to their questions, their investigation is “very much suggestive of a paper leak.”

A report by Times of India, citing EOU Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Manavjeet Singh Dhillon said that they recovered a list of the 13 people from a “safe house” located on the outskirts of Patna.&nbsp;

In light of the media reports and nationwide protests by&nbsp;students, Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, on Friday (Jun 14) said issues were witnessed in six of the over 4,700 centres where the exam was conducted, but otherwise, NEET was conducted satisfactorily across the country.&nbsp;

He also went on to deny the allegations of corruption in NTA and that the paper was leaked, but added that if anything is proven, “no one will be spared”. Pradhan said that they are looking into every aspect and those responsible for the lapses will be held accountable.&nbsp;

The NTA, meanwhile, said it wanted to withdraw three other petitions, which were seeking transfer of cases from high courts to the top court, as they pertained to grant of grace marks to 1,563 candidates on account of loss of time during the examination on May 5.

The counsel for the NTA said the issue has been settled and that he will be intimating the high court about the decision to cancel the compensatory marks given to 1,536 candidates and the consequential June 13 order of the top court.

Amid a raging row over the NEET-UG examination, the Centre and the NTA on Thursday told the Supreme Court they have cancelled the grace marks given to 1,563 candidates who took the examination for admission to MBBS and other such courses.

They will have the option to either take a re-test or forgo the compensatory marks awarded to them for loss of time, the centre had said.

SC issues notices on NTA's plea seeking transfer of cases on NEET-UG row from HCs to it

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday (June 13) hit out at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the alleged discrepancies in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) stating that the future of 2.4 million students who appeared in the medical entrance examination was at stake due to the Modi government's actions.

"Grace marks were not the only problem in the NEET exam. There has been rigging, papers have been leaked, corruption has taken place. The future of 24 lakh students who appeared in the NEET exam is at stake due to the actions of the Modi government. A nexus of Exam Centre and Coaching Centre has been formed, in which the game of 'pay money, take paper' is being played," Kharge said in a post on X.

He further said that the "Modi government cannot escape its responsibility" and called&nbsp;for a fair investigation under the supervision of the Supreme Court in the matter.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) stated on Saturday that the education ministry has formed a four-person panel to examine the grace marks given to over 1,500 applicants in the&nbsp;National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test NEET-UG medical entrance test.

On May 5, more than 24 lakh students gave the NEET UG 2024 exam, which was held at 4,750 locations across 571 cities. Out of them, just 1,600 test takers from six different locations experienced issues.

”Initially, 17 students were in the topper list. Due to a Physics answer challenge, 44 candidates scored between 715 to 720, increasing the number of toppers to 61,” Singh explained.

The issues included inaccurate question paper distribution and damaged OMR sheets, which caused applicants to lose time during the examination. Following that, these applicants went to the High Courts, requesting a retest or compensation for time lost. The petitions were dismissed when the courts were notified of the committee's formation.

The committee then recommended that the impacted students get compensation marks. The committee of four members, under the direction of a former UPSC chairperson, will examine the Bahadurgarh centre in Haryana, which is one of the six affected centers. The opposition Congress slammed the central government over the alleged irregularities and discrepancies in the NEET exam and accused it of ruining the future of millions of youth.

"After the NEET exam, now the NEET result is also in controversy. After the NEET results were declared, questions are being raised on six students from the same centre getting 720 out of 720 marks. Apart from this, many other irregularities related to the NEET exam have also come to light," the Congress wrote on X.

"First due to paper leak and now due to result error, the future of lakhs of youth of the country is getting ruined. It is clear that this government cannot get any paper done without leaking it. Sir claims to stop wars in foreign countries but he is unable to even stop paper leaks in the country," the party added.

Apart from this, many other irregularities related to the NEET exam have also come to light," the Congress wrote on X. India's NEET test-takers allege discrepancy in results, testing agency rejects claims

A gut wrenching video from Kanpur surfaced online where a medical aspirant was thrashed by a group of men after he was unable to pay a betting amount. The video, which is doing rounds on social media, shows men mercilessly beating a boy who is seen crying with folded hands, asking the hooligans to spare him.&nbsp;

As per reports, the NEET aspirant from Kanpur was brutally kicked, slapped, had his face burned and a brick tied to his private parts because he was allegedly unable to repay Rs 20,000 ($239.5) after a loss in an online betting game.&nbsp;

According to the Times of India, six persons have been taken into custody by the police in relation to the incident.

The video also shows accused men trying to burn the hair&nbsp;of the boy. The barbaric act doesn’t stop there; the men then stripped him naked and tied a brick to his genitals.

The boy, whose name is not revealed, kept telling the men that he will return the money after he gets a job but the assault continued.&nbsp;

Both victim and accused were students at a coaching institute for competitive exams and staying at a hostel in the Kakadeo area of the Kanpur city, where the assault happened on April 20.

In the end of the video, victim was let go by a threat: Pay the money within two days or the videos will be shared online. He failed to arrange the money and the clips were then posted online by the accused, leading to their arrest.

The police took note of the video and arrested the men seen in the video. The men have been identified as Tanay Chaurasiya, Abhishek Verma, Yogesh Vishwakarma, Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Har Govind Tiwari, and Shiva Tripathi, all from the Kakadeo police station area. They have admitted to the crime, the police said, adding they are trying to catch the other accused.&nbsp;

A man was arrested on Wednesday (Oct 25) from India’s southern Chennai city after he hurled a crude bomb outside the Tamil Nadu state governor’s residence.

The man, identified as Karukka Vinod, was soon subdued outside the main gate by a hoard of security personnel manning the official residence of Governor RN Ravi.

According to reports, he was anguished by the governor’s decision not to sign the anti-NEET Bill approved by the Tamil Nadu assembly several months ago.

The bill seeks to dispense with the NEET entrance examinations conducted for medical courses and allow admission based on Class 12 marks.

While attempting to escape, he was nabbed by the police following a brief chase.

Autopsies are being conducted, and investigation is&nbsp;currently underway to determine the underlying causes.&nbsp;“The bodies were sent for autopsy...Nobody reported any behavioral changes in them in the last few days. The investigation is underway,"&nbsp;a local police officer&nbsp;Debasish Bharadwaj reportedly said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kota is estimated to house around 225,000 students who are diligently preparing for medical and engineering entrance exams. The demanding nature of their studies, coupled with the distance from their families, often leads to elevated stress levels. For some students, the pressure becomes overwhelming, and they struggle to cope with the challenges.&nbsp;

The surge in suicides has compelled the state government to consider implementing a law to regulate private educational institutes. The aim is to alleviate the academic burden on students, especially those enrolled in coaching centers.

In 2017, following the deaths of 17 students in 2016, the Kota administration implemented mandatory measures such as appointing counsellors, introducing weekly offs and recreation days, and reshuffling test schedules.

Additionally, in the same year, a four-member team from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences was appointed to study the causes of extreme stress and depression among students, leading to suicides. Shockingly, since 2011, over 121 students have died by suicide in Kota.

The plea filed by BJP State General Secretary Karu Nagarajan called the nine-member AK Rajan committee unconstitutional, illegal, unfair and unreasonable. Nagarajan's plea wanted the court to restrain the committee from proceeding further. It added that as per the 2017 Supreme Court ruling, the Tamil Nadu government was required to implement the NEET exam for medical entrance.

During the hearing of this plea, the court questioned the Tamil Nadu government over whether it had sought or obtained the permission of the Supreme Court in this matter, as forming such a committee would be against the Supreme Court’s orders.&nbsp;

After a 45-day delay, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit has given his assent for a bill that was passed in September, regarding the provision of 7.5 per cent reservation for government school students in NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) for medical college admissions. Interestingly, it was on Thursday that the Tamil Nadu government issued a Government Order (GO) to provide 7.5% reservation for the undergraduate medical courses under NEET, considering the delay from the Governor’s end.&nbsp;

According to the State government, nearly 300 MBBS seats in government medical colleges and self-financing colleges would be made available for students from Government schools, with the assent for this bill.&nbsp;

The State Assembly had passed this bill on September 15th and it had since been pending with the Governor, who had sought legal opinion on the same. Ministers from the ruling party and opposition party had also met the Governor, seeking an expeditious assent for this bill.&nbsp;

Visible urgency in getting the assent for the bill arises from the fact that NEET results have been declared and medical admissions processes have begun.&nbsp;

On Thursday, a bench of the Madras High Court had also observed that the Governor should act according to his conscience, in response to a petition that had sought an interim direction to implement the sub-quota reservation of 7.5% of medical college seats in Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;

“The government after careful consideration of the recommendations of Justice P Kalaiyarasan commission had decided to take affirmative action, providing 7.5 per cent reservation, so as to bring about real equality by giving preference to the students of government schools, who have qualified in NEET in admission to MBBS and other medical courses” Health Secretary Dr J. Radhakrishnan had said in the GO.

The horizontal reservation of 7.5% shall be provided in each category of vertical reservation followed in Tamil Nadu within 69% reservation from 2020, the order added.&nbsp;

It was also mentioned that children belonging to weaker sections of society who studied in private schools until Class 8 under Right to Children to free and Compulsory Education Act, 2008, can benefit from this quota if they switch to government schools from standard 9.&nbsp;

The order is meant to benefit students who pursued education from Class 6th to 12th in the State government schools and have cleared NEET for admission to undergraduate level medical, dental, Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homeopathy courses in state-run medical college and seats covered under state-quota in self-financing colleges.

NEET has been a contentious issue in Tamil Nadu since its inception. Political parties in the state have been pointing out that NEET went against social justice and was putting students from rural areas and lesser fortunate backgrounds at a disadvantage, as they wouldn’t be able to pay for the coaching classes.&nbsp;

In late August, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Vijayabaskar had written to the Union Health Minister Dr.Harsh Vardhan emphasizing the need to cancel the NEET exam and allow Tamil Nadu to provide medical admissions on the basis of marks secured in the 12th grade board examinations. The letter also touched upon earlier instances where the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had written to the Prime Minister and Health Minister requesting that an ordinance be promulgated, to allow the state to follow its earlier pattern for medical admission.&nbsp;

However, some sections have also raised questions against the major political parties of Tamil Nadu, asking them why the government couldn’t invest more on education and raise the standard of its syllabus. This is suggested considering that CBSE students have an edge over the state-board students in such competitive exams. A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde passed the order after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought the top court's nod in the issue citing special circumstances due to the coronavirus pandemic.

''In view of the circumstances which have necessitated postponement of the examination in the past and in view of the prevailing circumstances, we consider it appropriate to grant permission to the National Testing Agency to conduct a second part of the NEET (UG) 2019 for the COVID affected students and for those in containment zones on October 14, 2020,''&nbsp;the bench said.

The bench, also comprising Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian,said the result may be declared on October 16, 2020.

The crucial National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), which is a pen and paper based test unlike engineering entrance exam JEE, was held on September 13 after being deferred twice in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The exam was originally scheduled for May 3, but was pushed to July 26, and then to September 13.

The apex court had earlier dismissed a plea seeking postponement of JEE (Main) April 2020 and NEET-Undergraduate examinations, which are scheduled to be conducted in September, amid spurt in number of COVID-19 cases, saying precious year of students "cannot be wasted" and life has to go on.

Former judges of the Madras High Court have urged the Chief Justice(CJ) to ‘not take seriously’ the comments made by actor Suriya on the recent student suicides in the state, connected with the NEET Exam. The former judges have requested the CJ to not take cognizance of the complaint so that the court is rid of unnecessary controversies.&nbsp; This comes after, Justice SM Subramaniam, a judge of the Madras High Court had written to the Chief Justice, seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against actor Suriya.

In a statement in Tamil, Suriya had expressed grief over the separate instances where three students from humble backgrounds had ended their lives due to fear and pressure ahead of the medical entrance test. The actor pointed out that it was painful that students are having to write exams to prove their eligibility at the time of a deadly pandemic.

“While Fearing for their lives amid Coronavirus pandemic and delivering justice via video conferencing, the Court orders students to go without fear and write the exams” read one of the lines in the actor’s statement. It is this line that had come to the attention of the judge, which led to him seeking initiation of contempt proceedings.

In his letter to the Chief Justice, the judge mentioned that, “the statement reveals that the Hon’ble Judges are afraid of their own life and rendering justice through video conferencing. While so, they have no morale to pass orders directing the students to appear for NEET exam without fear”.

Justice Subramaniam opined that the statement amounts to Contempt of Court, as it questioned the integrity and devotion of the judges and the judicial system of the country, to the extent of threatening the public confidence in the judiciary.

The actor’s statement urged society to raise a collective voice against NEET, which burns down the aspirations of children from humble backgrounds who wish to be doctors. He had also termed NEET as a ‘Manu Neethi test’, claiming that it denies students opportunities and also takes away their lives. Suriya had also cautioned parents and teachers to be alert and pay more attention to the education system which does not consider the welfare of students.

In their letter, the former judges pointed out the good social work done by the actor via his Trust in providing higher education and placements for hundreds of poor students. “We should show generosity and magnanimity in leaving the matter without any cognizance” said a portion of the statement signed by Retd. However, some of the major concerns being raised from the students’ end is the limited options of local public transport, trains and flights. Students have also been depending on online classes since March this year, when educational institutions, coaching centers were shut as a part of the nationwide lockdown. It is also feared that some students who are under quarantine or suffering from Covid-19 would be unable to take the tests, thus leading to the loss of an academic year.&nbsp;

The National Testing Agency (NTA), which is responsible for conducting the tests across the country, said that it has planned several measures to enhance safety - more examination centers, altered seating arrangements, fewer number of candidates per room and also staggered entry and exit.&nbsp;

However, the students point out that, there remain challenges when it comes to NRI students who wish to write the exam. Under normal situations, they would have come down to exam centers in India to take the test, but would not be able to do so under the current scenario where only limited flights are operating (from select destinations).&nbsp;

Several opposition party leaders including those from the TMC, Congress and DMK have been urging the government to ensure that the exams be postponed.

The Indian government is pushing for a return to normalcy to lessen the economic pain, after having imposed a strict early lockdown of India's 1.3 billion people in March.

"We are very mindful of the safety of our students, we will take full precautions," Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal told state radio, adding that the tests had to be held to ensure students did not lose a year.

Swedish climate activist Greta Thurnberg also waded into the dispute, urging a postponement.

"It’s deeply unfair that students of India are asked to sit national exams during the COVID-19 pandemic and while millions have also been impacted by the extreme floods," Thurnberg said on Twitter on Tuesday.

Parts of eastern India are also struggling with floods caused by annual monsoon rains.
