The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday (June 23) registered an FIR in connection with alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination which was held on May 5, said&nbsp;officials.

The significant development comes a day after the federal probe agency took over the investigation into the matter.

The Centre released a statement saying,&nbsp;"National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted the NEET(UG) Examination on May 5, 2024, in OMR (Pen and paper) mode. Certain cases of alleged irregularities/cheating/impersonation/malpractices have been reported. For transparency on the conduct of the examination process, the Ministry of Education, Government of India, after a review has decided to entrust the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for comprehensive investigation. Central Government has also enacted the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, to prevent unfair means in public examinations and to provide for matter connected therewith or incidental thereto."

"The government is committed to ensuring the sanctity of examinations and protect the interest of students. It is reiterated that any individual/ organization found to be involved will face strictest action," it added.

According to the officials, the CBI filed a fresh case against unidentified persons on the&nbsp;reference from the Union education ministry.&nbsp;

They stated that the ministry had to acquiesce to the appeals made by the students who were staging demonstrations across the country demanding a probe into the alleged discrepancies in the medical entrance examination.

"Certain cases of alleged irregularities, cheating, impersonation and malpractice have been reported in NEET-UG which was conducted on May 5," a senior education ministry official said.

"For transparency in the conduct of the examination process, it was decided after a review that the matter be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a comprehensive investigation," the official added.&nbsp;

The unexpected results of the exam showed 67 candidates achieving a score of 720 marks which raised concerns among students.

The Ministry of Education said that it formed a high-level committee comprising experts who will suggest recommendations in the examination process to ensure smooth functioning and data security protocols.

The 7-member committee, helmed by ISRO former chairman Dr K. Radhakrishnan, is slated to submit its report to the ministry in two months.

"In order to ensure transparent, smooth and fair conduct of examinations through the National Testing Agency (NTA), the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education constituted a High-Level Committee of Experts to make recommendations on reform in the mechanism of examination process improvement in data security protocols and the structure and functioning of National Testing Agency," the ministry said.&nbsp;

<h2>NTA chief sacked</h2>

The NEET-UG exam held earlier this summer was marred by allegations of massive cheating, rigging and question paper leaks. The controversy led to the sacking of NTA chief&nbsp;Subodh Kumar Singh on Saturday (Jun 22).&nbsp;Singh has been put on "compulsory wait" in the Department of Personnel and Training, while retired Indian Administration Service (IAS) officer Pradeep Singh Kharola has been appointed as the new director general of the exam body.

"While all other examination centres have changed, the one in Chandigarh, where only two candidates will appear, will remain the same," a senior NTA official said.

"Besides, officials from the agency and the Union education ministry will also be present at these centres. The step has been taken to ensure smooth conduct of the re-exam," the official added.

Earlier on Thursday (Jun 20), Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan ruled out cancellation of NEET exams, saying the government can't jeopardise the careers of millions of students who cleared the exams.

<h2>More arrests made</h2>

Meanwhile, Indian agencies have arrested more individuals in connection with the allegations of the NEET exam paper leak.&nbsp;Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) detained two teachers from Latur district on Saturday. As per media reports, the two teachers run a coaching centre in Latur.&nbsp;

Earlier,&nbsp;Bihar Police’s Economic Offences Unit (EOU) arrested six people including the prime suspect Chintu from Jharkhand’s Deoghar.

<h2>NEET-PG exam postponed</h2>

Earlier, the government had postponed the NEET-PG Entrance Examination, originally scheduled to take place on Sunday (June 23).

In a statement issued at 10 pm on June 22, the government said, "Taking into consideration, the recent incidents of allegations regarding the integrity of certain competitive examinations, Ministry of Health has decided to undertake a thorough assessment of the robustness of processes of NEET-PG Entrance Examination, conducted by National Board of Examination for medical students. It has accordingly been decided, as a precautionary measure to postpone the NEET-PG Entrance Examination, scheduled to be held tomorrow i.e. 23rd June, 2024. Fresh date of this examination will be notified at the earliest."

If during the probe it is established that a senior official of the service provider participated in or allowed the offence, he/she would be sentenced to a minimum of three years in prison which can go up to a maximum of 10 years and a fine of Rs 1 crore (1,19,670.50 USD).

The committee is scheduled to submit its report to the ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) within next two months.&nbsp;

The 7-member committee will be headed by former chief of Indian Space Research Organisation, Dr K Radhakrishnan. The committee also includes Dr Randeep Guleria, Prof B J Rao, Prof. Ramamurthy K, Pankaj Bansal, Aditya Mittal, Govind Jaiswal.

Earlier, Union Human Resource Development minister Dharmendra Pradhan promised tough action against National Testing Agency (NTA) officials for any irregularity and added that government was committed to zero-error testing. Pradhan, however, stopped short of giving in to the demand to scrap the medical entrance test and conduct fresh test devoid of any irregularities.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has directed the National Testing Agency to conduct re-exam for the NEET aspirants, who had been awarded grace marks, on June 23.&nbsp;

But the ongoing developments do not stall the ongoing counselling process.

"Counselling will proceed, and we will not stop it. If the exam is affected, everything is affected, so there is nothing to fear," the Supreme Court declared.

India's education ministry on Saturday (June 22) constituted a high-level committee of experts to ensure fair and transparent conduct of national examinations amid the NEET and UGC-NET row. The development coincides with the arrest of Ravi Atri, the alleged mastermind behind the purported paper leak, by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF). "In order to ensure transparent, smooth and fair conduct of examinations through National Testing Agency (NTA), department of higher education, ministry of education constituted a high-level committee of experts to make recommendations on Reform in mechanism of examination process improvement in data security protocols and structure and functioning of National Testing Agency," the ministry said. The committee, formed in the wake of growing controversy over the integrity of medical entrance exam NEET, will make recommendations for reforms in the mechanism of the examination process as well as the improvement in the data security protocols within the National Testing Agency (NTA). The 7-member committee will be headed by former chief of Indian Space Research Organisation, Dr K Radhakrishnan. The committee also includes Dr Randeep Guleria, Prof B J Rao, Prof. Ramamurthy K, Pankaj Bansal, Aditya Mittal, Govind Jaiswal. Earlier, Union Human Resource Development minister Dharmendra Pradhan promised tough action against National Testing Agency (NTA) officials for any irregularity and added that government was committed to zero-error testing. <h2>'UGC-NET exam paper leaked on Darknet'</h2>

The Union Minister of Education further said that the UGC-NET exam was cancelled because it got leaked on the Darknet.

"Specific question paper is there on the Darknet. This input has been given by the Home Ministry's prestigious organisation I4C. When we compared the document with our original question paper, we came to the conclusion that this was a case of paper leak. When you are organising such a huge prestigious examination for the future Assistant Professors and PhD students, you have to maintain the quality," Pradhan said.

NEET paper leak case: 'Strict action to be taken against any NTA official if found guilty,' says Education Min

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha on Thursday (June 20) claimed that the prime accused who was arrested in the alleged NEET paper leak case was connected to the officials close to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav.&nbsp;

Sinha while addressing a press conference stated that the official was constantly in touch with Sikander Prasad Yadvendu, the prime accused arrested by the police. He also demanded&nbsp;a probe into the matter.

“The official associated with Yadav used to arrange ated byccommodation for Sikandar at guest houses in Patna and other places. I have details of messages which the official had sent to the persons concerned for arranging accommodation for Sikandar,” the deputy chief minister said.

He said he had the number from where the messages were sent.

"It needs to be thoroughly probed. Why is the RJD leader (Tejashwi Prasad) maintaining a stoic silence on this?" Sinha questioned.

He said that certain reports were suggesting that the accused was also in touch with RJD supremo Lalu Prasad when he was in judicial custody in Ranchi.

The top court said that we cannot overlook the efforts of the children who have prepared for the exams.&nbsp;

"Just imagine a doctor treating who has passed like this and needs to be checked," the top court said.&nbsp;

 
The Supreme Court told the Centre and the NTA to approach challenges regarding NEET-UG as opportunities for improvement, not hostile legal battles. The judges further emphasised the importance of acknowledging and rectifying any errors made during the exam's administration.

The top court further told the NTA, "You are conducting the examination and you must act fair. If there is a mistake, say yes, this is a mistake, and this is the action we are going to take. At least that motivates confidence in your performance."

The Supreme Court is hearing a batch of petitions&nbsp;which allege&nbsp;paper leaks, awarding grace marks and a significant increase in high scorers.&nbsp;

Notably, on June 14, the top court issued notices to the Centre and the NTA on a plea requesting for CBI investigation into the accusation of paper leak.&nbsp;

A report by Times of India, citing EOU Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Manavjeet Singh Dhillon said that they recovered a list of the 13 people from a “safe house” located on the outskirts of Patna.&nbsp;

In light of the media reports and nationwide protests by&nbsp;students, Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, on Friday (Jun 14) said issues were witnessed in six of the over 4,700 centres where the exam was conducted, but otherwise, NEET was conducted satisfactorily across the country.&nbsp;

He also went on to deny the allegations of corruption in NTA and that the paper was leaked, but added that if anything is proven, “no one will be spared”. Pradhan said that they are looking into every aspect and those responsible for the lapses will be held accountable.&nbsp;

Amid a raging row over the NEET-UG examination, the Centre and the NTA on Thursday told the Supreme Court they have cancelled the grace marks given to 1,563 candidates who took the examination for admission to MBBS and other such courses.

They will have the option to either take a re-test or forgo the compensatory marks awarded to them for loss of time, the centre had said.

The examination was held on May 5 across 4,750 centres and around 24 lakh candidates took it.

The results were expected to be declared on June 14 but were announced on June 4, apparently because the evaluation of the answer sheets got completed earlier.

The court, however, said the counselling for the admissions will continue for now.&nbsp;

”Initially, 17 students were in the topper list. Due to a Physics answer challenge, 44 candidates scored between 715 to 720, increasing the number of toppers to 61,” Singh explained.

The issues included inaccurate question paper distribution and damaged OMR sheets, which caused applicants to lose time during the examination. Following that, these applicants went to the High Courts, requesting a retest or compensation for time lost. The petitions were dismissed when the courts were notified of the committee's formation.

The committee then recommended that the impacted students get compensation marks. The committee of four members, under the direction of a former UPSC chairperson, will examine the Bahadurgarh centre in Haryana, which is one of the six affected centers. NEET 2024 results controversy: India's testing agency NTA forms panel to review grace marks

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked PM-designate Narendra Modi amid the ongoing NEET-UG medical entrance controversy stating that the alleged discrepancies in the examination had "devastated more than 24 lakh students and their families".

The grand old party's MP-elect then assured that he would become their voice in the parliament, further vowing to strongly raise concerns related to the betterment of their future.

"Narendra Modi has not even taken oath yet and the scam in NEET exam has devastated more than 24 lakh students and their families. 6 students from the same exam centre top the exam with maximum marks, many get such marks which are technically not possible, but the government is continuously denying the possibility of paper leak," Gandhi said in a post on X.

Further reiterating the poll promise to formulate a law that would deal with the paper leak issues, Gandhi said that the grand old party has come up with a "robust plan".

"Congress had made a robust plan to deal with this 'paper leak industry' which is being run in collusion with the education mafia and the government machinery. In our manifesto, we had pledged to free the students from paper leak by making a law," he said.

"Such cases and representations were considered by NTA and the normalisation formula, which has been devised and adopted by Supreme Court, vide its Judgment dated 13.06.2018, was implemented to address the loss of time faced by the candidates of NEET (UG) 2024," it said in a statement.

"The loss of examination time was ascertained and such candidates were compensated with grace marks. So, there marks can be 718 or 719 also," the statement further read.

However, on Saturday, the NTA set up a committee to review the grace marks awarded to NEET UG 2024 candidates.

The opposition Congress slammed the central government over the alleged irregularities and discrepancies in the NEET exam and accused it of ruining the future of millions of youth.

"After the NEET exam, now the NEET result is also in controversy. After the NEET results were declared, questions are being raised on six students from the same centre getting 720 out of 720 marks. Apart from this, many other irregularities related to the NEET exam have also come to light," the Congress wrote on X.

"First due to paper leak and now due to result error, the future of lakhs of youth of the country is getting ruined. It is clear that this government cannot get any paper done without leaking it. Sir claims to stop wars in foreign countries but he is unable to even stop paper leaks in the country," the party added.

A gut wrenching video from Kanpur surfaced online where a medical aspirant was thrashed by a group of men after he was unable to pay a betting amount. The video, which is doing rounds on social media, shows men mercilessly beating a boy who is seen crying with folded hands, asking the hooligans to spare him.&nbsp;

As per reports, the NEET aspirant from Kanpur was brutally kicked, slapped, had his face burned and a brick tied to his private parts because he was allegedly unable to repay Rs 20,000 ($239.5) after a loss in an online betting game.&nbsp;

According to the Times of India, six persons have been taken into custody by the police in relation to the incident.

The video also shows accused men trying to burn the hair&nbsp;of the boy. The barbaric act doesn’t stop there; the men then stripped him naked and tied a brick to his genitals.

The boy, whose name is not revealed, kept telling the men that he will return the money after he gets a job but the assault continued.&nbsp;

Both victim and accused were students at a coaching institute for competitive exams and staying at a hostel in the Kakadeo area of the Kanpur city, where the assault happened on April 20.

In the end of the video, victim was let go by a threat: Pay the money within two days or the videos will be shared online. He failed to arrange the money and the clips were then posted online by the accused, leading to their arrest.

The police took note of the video and arrested the men seen in the video. They have admitted to the crime, the police said, adding they are trying to catch the other accused.&nbsp;

A man was arrested on Wednesday (Oct 25) from India’s southern Chennai city after he hurled a crude bomb outside the Tamil Nadu state governor’s residence.

The man, identified as Karukka Vinod, was soon subdued outside the main gate by a hoard of security personnel manning the official residence of Governor RN Ravi.

According to reports, he was anguished by the governor’s decision not to sign the anti-NEET Bill approved by the Tamil Nadu assembly several months ago.

The bill seeks to dispense with the NEET entrance examinations conducted for medical courses and allow admission based on Class 12 marks.

While attempting to escape, he was nabbed by the police following a brief chase.

Vinod had earlier thrown crude bombs outside the BJP headquarters in Chennai city.

According to local reports, Vinod is a known serial offender, and has been arrested twice before in similar incidents. He was released from jail three days ago.

A man was arrested on Wednesday (Oct 25) from India’s southern Chennai city after he hurled a crude bomb outside the Tamil Nadu state governor’s residence. The student from Uttar Pradesh had recently arrived in Kota to prepare for the all-India pre-medical entrance test. Tragically, the teenager's lifeless body was discovered by a house help when he went to serve dinner, as per media reports.&nbsp;

A suicide note was found in one of these cases, details of which are not yet available. Autopsies are being conducted, and investigation is&nbsp;currently underway to determine the underlying causes.&nbsp;“The bodies were sent for autopsy...Nobody reported any behavioral changes in them in the last few days. The investigation is underway,"&nbsp;a local police officer&nbsp;Debasish Bharadwaj reportedly said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kota is estimated to house around 225,000 students who are diligently preparing for medical and engineering entrance exams. The demanding nature of their studies, coupled with the distance from their families, often leads to elevated stress levels. For some students, the pressure becomes overwhelming, and they struggle to cope with the challenges.&nbsp;

The surge in suicides has compelled the state government to consider implementing a law to regulate private educational institutes. The aim is to alleviate the academic burden on students, especially those enrolled in coaching centers.

In 2017, following the deaths of 17 students in 2016, the Kota administration implemented mandatory measures such as appointing counsellors, introducing weekly offs and recreation days, and reshuffling test schedules.

Additionally, in the same year, a four-member team from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences was appointed to study the causes of extreme stress and depression among students, leading to suicides. Shockingly, since 2011, over 121 students have died by suicide in Kota.

India: Two NEET aspirants die by suicide in Rajasthan's coaching hub Kota on same day

Little Master Sachin Tendulkar has come to the aid of 19-year-old Dipti Vishvasrao, a resident of Zarye village in Ratnagiri district, and the latter is now on course towards becoming the first lady doctor from her village.

Even though she was a brilliant student all throughout and had always dreamt of becoming a doctor, getting to her goal was never too easy. During the lockdown, she would travel a kilometre everyday since her village was remotely located, so she could get a network connection to be able to continue her studies online.&nbsp;

Her hard work paid rich dividends as Dipti who had performed exceptionally well in her board examinations, and also successfully cleared the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), secured admission to the Government Medical College at Akola.&nbsp;

But that was not enough, as even after successfully securing admission to a medical college, financial constraints were preventing Dipti from pursuing her dreams. After securing admission to the medical college, she was unable to afford the fees and other expenses due to her father's modest income. While her relatives contributed to the fees, she was still short of funds for the hostel and other expenses.&nbsp;

Just when she was losing hope, Tendulkar came to the rescue. His timely intervention through his foundation, in association with the Seva Sahyog Foundation (SSF), ensured that Dipti is well on track to realizing her dreams and aspirations of becoming the first girl from her village to become a doctor.&nbsp;

A video message from SSF's Twitter handle has Dipti saying: "I am thankful to Sachin Tendulkar Foundation for awarding me the scholarship. The scholarship has lightened all my financial burdens which allows me to focus more on my studies. My lifelong dream of becoming a doctor is now moving forward and is becoming reality at Government medical college Akola. I promise I will work hard and one day I will be able to help other brilliant students for fulfilling their dreams just as Sachin Tendulkar Foundation helped."

The plea filed by BJP State General Secretary Karu Nagarajan called the nine-member AK Rajan committee unconstitutional, illegal, unfair and unreasonable. Nagarajan's plea wanted the court to restrain the committee from proceeding further. It added that as per the 2017 Supreme Court ruling, the Tamil Nadu government was required to implement the NEET exam for medical entrance.

During the hearing of this plea, the court questioned the Tamil Nadu government over whether it had sought or obtained the permission of the Supreme Court in this matter, as forming such a committee would be against the Supreme Court’s orders.&nbsp;

Appearing on behalf of the state government, Advocate General Shanmugasundaram submitted that the committee formation was a policy decision taken by the government. He added that it was also backed by the DMK manifesto and the people's demand. Responding to this, the first bench of Justices Sanjib Banerjee and Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy said, "May be, but if it is contrary to the Supreme Court order, then it cannot be permitted".&nbsp;

It was the ruling DMK’s election promise to abolish NEET, if voted to power. DMK President MK Stalin had said that a law would be passed in the State Assembly to abolish NEET, following which the Indian President's assent would be sought.

The case will be heard next on July 05.

After a 45-day delay, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit has given his assent for a bill that was passed in September, regarding the provision of 7.5 per cent reservation for government school students in NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) for medical college admissions. Interestingly, it was on Thursday that the Tamil Nadu government issued a Government Order (GO) to provide 7.5% reservation for the undergraduate medical courses under NEET, considering the delay from the Governor’s end.&nbsp;

According to the State government, nearly 300 MBBS seats in government medical colleges and self-financing colleges would be made available for students from Government schools, with the assent for this bill.&nbsp;

The State Assembly had passed this bill on September 15th and it had since been pending with the Governor, who had sought legal opinion on the same. Ministers from the ruling party and opposition party had also met the Governor, seeking an expeditious assent for this bill.&nbsp;

Visible urgency in getting the assent for the bill arises from the fact that NEET results have been declared and medical admissions processes have begun.&nbsp;

On Thursday, a bench of the Madras High Court had also observed that the Governor should act according to his conscience, in response to a petition that had sought an interim direction to implement the sub-quota reservation of 7.5% of medical college seats in Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;

“The government after careful consideration of the recommendations of Justice P Kalaiyarasan commission had decided to take affirmative action, providing 7.5 per cent reservation, so as to bring about real equality by giving preference to the students of government schools, who have qualified in NEET in admission to MBBS and other medical courses” Health Secretary Dr J. Radhakrishnan had said in the GO.

The horizontal reservation of 7.5% shall be provided in each category of vertical reservation followed in Tamil Nadu within 69% reservation from 2020, the order added.&nbsp;

It was also mentioned that children belonging to weaker sections of society who studied in private schools until Class 8 under Right to Children to free and Compulsory Education Act, 2008, can benefit from this quota if they switch to government schools from standard 9.&nbsp;

The order is meant to benefit students who pursued education from Class 6th to 12th in the State government schools and have cleared NEET for admission to undergraduate level medical, dental, Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homeopathy courses in state-run medical college and seats covered under state-quota in self-financing colleges.

NEET has been a contentious issue in Tamil Nadu since its inception. Political parties in the state have been pointing out that NEET went against social justice and was putting students from rural areas and lesser fortunate backgrounds at a disadvantage, as they wouldn’t be able to pay for the coaching classes.&nbsp;

In late August, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Vijayabaskar had written to the Union Health Minister Dr.Harsh Vardhan emphasizing the need to cancel the NEET exam and allow Tamil Nadu to provide medical admissions on the basis of marks secured in the 12th grade board examinations. The letter also touched upon earlier instances where the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had written to the Prime Minister and Health Minister requesting that an ordinance be promulgated, to allow the state to follow its earlier pattern for medical admission.&nbsp;

However, some sections have also raised questions against the major political parties of Tamil Nadu, asking them why the government couldn’t invest more on education and raise the standard of its syllabus. This is suggested considering that CBSE students have an edge over the state-board students in such competitive exams. It is also being pointed out that JEE and other entrance exams for management courses too are conducted pan-India and how they go on unopposed.

The Supreme Court Monday allowed National Testing Agency to conduct second round of the NEET (UG) for the COVID-19 affected students and those in containment zones on October 14.

A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde passed the order after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought the top court's nod in the issue citing special circumstances due to the coronavirus pandemic.

''In view of the circumstances which have necessitated postponement of the examination in the past and in view of the prevailing circumstances, we consider it appropriate to grant permission to the National Testing Agency to conduct a second part of the NEET (UG) 2019 for the COVID affected students and for those in containment zones on October 14, 2020,''&nbsp;the bench said.

The bench, also comprising Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian,said the result may be declared on October 16, 2020.

The crucial National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), which is a pen and paper based test unlike engineering entrance exam JEE, was held on September 13 after being deferred twice in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The exam was originally scheduled for May 3, but was pushed to July 26, and then to September 13.

The apex court had earlier dismissed a plea seeking postponement of JEE (Main) April 2020 and NEET-Undergraduate examinations, which are scheduled to be conducted in September, amid spurt in number of COVID-19 cases, saying precious year of students "cannot be wasted" and life has to go on.

The top court had said career of students "cannot be put under jeopardy for long".

Later, the apex court had dismissed a review plea of ministers of six opposition-ruled states seeking review of its August 17 order allowing holding of NEET and JEE exams physically.

Former judges of the Madras High Court have urged the Chief Justice(CJ) to ‘not take seriously’ the comments made by actor Suriya on the recent student suicides in the state, connected with the NEET Exam. The former judges have requested the CJ to not take cognizance of the complaint so that the court is rid of unnecessary controversies.&nbsp; This comes after, Justice SM Subramaniam, a judge of the Madras High Court had written to the Chief Justice, seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against actor Suriya.

In a statement in Tamil, Suriya had expressed grief over the separate instances where three students from humble backgrounds had ended their lives due to fear and pressure ahead of the medical entrance test. The actor pointed out that it was painful that students are having to write exams to prove their eligibility at the time of a deadly pandemic.

“While Fearing for their lives amid Coronavirus pandemic and delivering justice via video conferencing, the Court orders students to go without fear and write the exams” read one of the lines in the actor’s statement. It is this line that had come to the attention of the judge, which led to him seeking initiation of contempt proceedings.

In his letter to the Chief Justice, the judge mentioned that, “the statement reveals that the Hon’ble Judges are afraid of their own life and rendering justice through video conferencing. While so, they have no morale to pass orders directing the students to appear for NEET exam without fear”.

Justice Subramaniam opined that the statement amounts to Contempt of Court, as it questioned the integrity and devotion of the judges and the judicial system of the country, to the extent of threatening the public confidence in the judiciary.

The actor’s statement urged society to raise a collective voice against NEET, which burns down the aspirations of children from humble backgrounds who wish to be doctors. He had also termed NEET as a ‘Manu Neethi test’, claiming that it denies students opportunities and also takes away their lives. Suriya had also cautioned parents and teachers to be alert and pay more attention to the education system which does not consider the welfare of students.

In their letter, the former judges pointed out the good social work done by the actor via his Trust in providing higher education and placements for hundreds of poor students. “We should show generosity and magnanimity in leaving the matter without any cognizance” said a portion of the statement signed by Retd.
