Addressing an election rally at Khairthal in Alwar district, Sidhu alleged corruption in the Modi government’s deal with France to purchase 36 Rafale military aircraft, a charge repeatedly denied by the Centre.

He claimed the plane worth Rs 500 crore was being bought for Rs 1,600 crore.

The crowd chanted, ''chowkidar chor hai (the watchman is a thief).''

The slogan was given by Gandhi who had earlier mocked Modi’s claim that he will act like ''watchman'' against graft in the country.

''Even the watchman’s dog is involved,'' Sidhu then said. He claimed the BJP government’s 'Make in India' slogan had not yielded results, saying the government had a deal on Rafale with France and on the bullet train with Japan.

He claimed the Sardar Patel statue recently installed in Gujarat was “bought from China”.

''Will the people of the country fry pakodas?'' he said. Sidhu said he will quit politics if his allegations are proved false.

''You have broken the back of farmers. You do not belong to the poor farmers but to Ambani and Adani. You have become puppet of the industrialists,'' Sidhu charged, targeting Modi.

He also lashed out at Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. ''The maharani is sitting in the fort and ruling the state,'' he said.

He said women are not safe in the state which records a high number of rapes.

Assembly polls will be held in Rajasthan on December 7.

Union Minister for Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Wednesday took a jibe at Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu and said that he seems to be getting more love and respect from Pakistan than India.

Badal`s statement comes after Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan during the groundbreaking ceremony of Kartarpur Corridor across the border said that Sidhu can also win elections in his country.

Reacting to the same, Badal told ANI, "He (Imran Khan) offered him (Navjot Singh Sidhu) to fight elections from Pakistan. He (Sidhu) seems to have more love and respect in Pakistan than what I noticed over here. He has some good relationships over there."

Earlier at the ceremony of the Kartarpur Corridor, Imran Khan said, "I heard there was a lot of criticism of Sidhu when he went back after my oath-taking ceremony. I don`t know what he was criticised for. He was just talking about peace and brotherhood. He can come and contest election here in Pakistan`s Punjab. He will win."

Badal further said it was an "emotional and a historic" moment for her to attend the ceremony.

"In last 48 hours, I have seen history and miracles taking place in front of my eye. There is so much joy on both sides (India and Pakistan). If the Berlin wall came down, if North and South Korea could settle their differences, if Germany and France can settle their differences, it`s time that our wall of hatred should come down too," she said.

Several dignitaries and ministers from both the countries attended the Kartarpur Corridor groundbreaking ceremony held in Lahore.

The Kartarpur route along the India-Pakistan border is three kilometres away from Gurdaspur, Punjab. Once opened, it would allow Sikh pilgrims a direct access to the historic gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, Pakistan, where Guru Nanak died in 1539.

Sidhu returned home Thursday after attending the groundbreaking ceremony for a visa-free corridor which will allow Sikh pilgrims access from Gurdaspur's Dera Baba Nanak to the shrine in Kartarpur, where Guru Nanak Dev spent his final years.

The minister said he had posed with several people and it was difficult to distinguish them.

''They showered so much love there. Every day ten thousand pictures were clicked, and among them who was Chawla or Cheema I do not know,'' he told reporters in Attari on his return.

Sidhu had received flak for attending the ceremony in his personal capacity, even after being advised against it by Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

He said the hopes of 12 crore followers of Guru Nanak Dev had turned into reality with the historic decision by India and Pakistan to build the corridor.

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the corridor linking Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan's Kartarpur - the final resting place of Sikh faith's founder Guru Nanak Dev - to Dera Baba Nanak shrine in India's Gurdaspur district.

Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan is located across the river Ravi, about four kilometres from the Dera Baba Nanak shrine. It was established by the Sikh Guru in 1522. The first gurdwara, Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib, was built here, where Guru Nanak Dev is said to have died.

The Kartarpur Corridor, which will facilitate the visa-free travel of Sikh pilgrims on both sides, is expected to be completed within six months.

During his speech in Pakistan, Sidhu also said that both the nations should seek a path of brotherhood and live in harmony without any fear with the blessing of Guru Nanak Dev, Also adding that if the borders between both countries opened, it would be possible to transport goods to different parts of Pakistan and even others countries.

Expressing his gratitude to the central government over its initiative to develop the proposed Gurudwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur corridor in Pakistan, Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday hoped that the corridor would "yield undeniable and implicit change and thaw" in the relations, adding that it will "build bridges, burn animosity and will act as a soothing balm for two neighbouring countries."

In a letter to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Sidhu wrote, "It fills my heart with joy unspeakable on learning that the Government of India has agreed to build a corridor for pilgrims to visit Kartarpur Sahib on 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. As a Sikh devotee and as a man committed to the cause of Punjab and its people, I am extremely grateful and indebted for the steps initiated by the Government of India."

He said that the Kartarpur corridor has been a "long-standing demand of the Sikh community across the globe" and the recent step taken by the Centre "has brought a new ray of hope among pilgrims who anxiously await to pay obeisance at the historical Gurudwara Sahib across the border."

Recalling his meeting with Swaraj a few months ago, Sidhu added that he asked the central government to take up the issue of developing the corridor with Pakistan.

"During my visit to Pakistan, I was made aware about intent of Pakistan for opening the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor on 550th Parkash Utsav celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and this was further authenticated by Information Minister of Pakistan Fawad Chaudhary and yesterday the Foreign Affairs Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi further augmented the fact that the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan is set to lay foundation stone for the corridor on their side on 28 November 2018," Sidhu wrote in the letter.

Underscoring that the positive steps by both the countries are "a great respite for the followers of Guru's (Nanak Dev) timeless teachings, and for the people of Punjab", the cricketer-turned-politician further said.

The people falling in the old age category would be given pension by the government, he said.

Sidhu reiterated that he is committed to help the affected families monetarily and that the families would not be left in the lurch with the government standing shoulder-to-shoulder with them in their hour of need.

"The state government will give jobs to the eligible family members of those killed in the rail tragedy," he told reporters here.

The minister said that though many people are coming forward to adopt the children rendered orphan in the tragedy, the government would only allow the adoption to take place after the completion of formalities and procedures as per the law.

The Local government minister handed over cheques of financial assistance to 5 more victim families of the recent rail tragedy.

He said that till date 46 families have been provided with the financial assistance and the rest of the 13 cheques would also be given soon.

Sidhu termed as "most unfortunate" that some elements are playing politics over the bodies of the people killed in the tragedy.

Majithia had also claimed that the burning of Ravana's effigy was delayed as Sidhu's wife who was the chief guest was running late for the event.

Navjot Kaur Sidhu had said she came to know about the "tragic incident" after she had left the venue.

She had added that soon after coming to know of the incident, she had gone to the hospital to see the patients.

She had also claimed that being a doctor herself, she had even personally treated some of the victims, besides arranging for some more doctors to attend on them.&nbsp;

Cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu Saturday had defended his wife, saying that she was with the victims when the allegations were being levelled against her.

"I fought elections from here because of my wife. She has been working here. Last night, when accusations were being levelled against her, she was with patients. She called me up yesterday. Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu on Saturday described the tragic train accident in Amritsar in which close to 60 people lost their lives as a ''sad'' and ''unfortunate'' incident.&nbsp;

Over 60 people died and at least 70 injured on Friday when a speeding train mowed them down while they were celebrating Dussehra festival.

''It was a sad and an unfortunate incident. It is necessary to understand that it was an accident. There has been negligence but it was never intentional or motivated,'' Sidhu said.&nbsp;

According to reports, people were burning Dussehra effigy near the railway track in Choura Bazar area in Amritsar when a train ran into the crowd.

The accident occurred within minutes when the train came at a high speed, he said and added that the train did not blow the horn.&nbsp;

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has ordered an investigation into the incident. &nbsp;

Sidhu visited the Civil Hospital where several injured in the accident have been admitted.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, eight trains have been cancelled and five trains have been diverted following the incident.&nbsp;

According to railway sources, 10 trains have been short-terminated while five trains short-originated today following the incident.&nbsp;

'Sad and unfortunate incident': Navjot Singh Sidhu on Amritsar train accident

Hours after the Supreme Court convicted him for voluntarily hurting a 65-year-old man but spared him a jail term, Punjab cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu said that he had told Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka that "my life is yours".

The Congress leader also said that he would meet Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi to thank them for supporting him.

"I have sent messages to Rahul ji and Priyanka ji. I have stated that my life is yours. The CM sahib also called me up and I told him, till my last breath, I am committed to the welfare of Punjab," Sidhu said.

The Punjab cabinet minister described the 1988 road rage case as "an accident, nothing else" and said he has been a survivor all his life. He also thanked God for helping him during "trying times" and expressed gratitude to the people for their blessings.

A bench of justices J Chelameswar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul reversed the findings of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which had convicted Sidhu for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sentenced him to three years in jail.

The Supreme Court bench also imposed a Rs 1,000-fine on the cricketer-turned-politician.

"Well, it was an accident, nothing else," Sidhu told reporters. He said the top court too said it was an accident.

Asked whether he regretted the episode, Sidhu said, "A life was lost and everybody will regret it. But the court says it was an accident. I have submitted to the majesty of the law and whatever the court says I abide by it."

The minister said he was not nervous ahead of the verdict in the 30-year-old case. "I got up at 3 am... I meditated. I played with my dogs for almost an hour," he said. 
"You will never see me cribbing and pointing fingers at others. I am strong enough to carry my burden on my own shoulder," he said. "The Almighty has always helped him tide over difficult circumstances. It is the grace of God which has helped me through trying times."

"I have been a survivor all my life. It is the grace of God which always prevails and bails me through. Every adversity has made me bigger and hence my reputation. From the age of 7 till 53, there has been no defeat," he said.

Sidhu said he had no hard feelings against anybody and he has forgiven everyone who had criticised him.

"I forgive those who criticized me, who condemned me and made political capital out of this case," he said.

The Amarinder Singh-led Congress government in Punjab had on April 12 favoured the high court's judgment awarding three-year jail term to Sidhu in the top court. The chief minister had maintained that his government had taken the only legally tenable stand in the Supreme Court.

On the Karnataka poll results disappointing the Congress, Sidhu said he did not think Rahul Gandhi's leadership would be questioned. "Rahul bhai is a leader in ascent. He is a man of character. He is growing every day, evolving every day."

"2019 Lok Sabha polls are going to be a different ball game. You look at the allies, you see in UP and Bihar what is happening there," he said, referring to the political success the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party achieved after reaching an understanding for the by-polls held in March.

Sidhu, who ditched the BJP for the Congress days before the Punjab polls last year, said he wanted to see a prosperous Punjab. "The whole world is my country and all mankind my brethren... The desire in my heart is to see a prosperous Punjab," said the Punjab cabinet minister.

"Truth does not see profit or loss. In a war between right or wrong, you can't afford to be neutral. Mission of Sidhu's life is to see Punjab again become the 'Punjab' it was during the time of Maharaja Ranjit Singh," he added.

The bench found Sidhu guilty of voluntarily causing hurt (under Section 323 of the IPC) but acquitted him of the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304. His co-accused Rupinder Singh Sandhu, te tourism minister in Punjab, was acquitted of all the charges.

A bench of Justices J Chelameswar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul was pronouncing judgment on an appeal filed by Sidhu against a December 2006 Punjab and Haryana High Court verdict convicting and sentencing him to three years in jail in a road rage case.

Besides Sidhu, the appeal was also filed by Sandhu, who was also given a three-year jail term by the high court. Sidhu and Sandhu were initially tried for murder but the trial court in September 1999 acquitted the duo.

The road rage incident dates back to December 27, 1988, when Sidhu had allegedly punched one 65-year-old Gurnam Singh in Punjab's Patiala, resulting in latter's death.

The sessions court acquitted Sidhu and Sandhu on September 22, 1999, due to lack of evidence.

The trial court had acquitted Sidhu, whereas the Punjab and Haryana High Court reversed his acquittal, convicting him under Section 304 Part II of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The victim's family had appealed to the Supreme Court that earlier imprisonment sentence of three years given by the Punjab and Haryana High Court should be enhanced. However, the Punjab government appealed to the apex court to uphold three-year imprisonment.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court today reserved its judgment on the appeal filed by cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court verdict convicting and sentencing him to three years in jail in a 1988 road rage case.

A bench comprising Justices J Chelameswar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul reserved the verdict after hearing the arguments.&nbsp

Senior advocate R S Cheema, appearing for Sidhu, said that the evidence brought on record regarding the cause of death of the victim were "indefinite and contradictory".

It was alleged that when they reached the crossing, Gurnam Singh, driving a maruti car, found the Gypsy in the middle of the road and asked the occupants, Sidhu and Sandhu, to remove the vehicle for their passage. This led to heated exchanges.

The police had claimed that Singh was beaten up by Sidhu who later fled the crime scene. The injured was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

Punjab government seeks Navjot Singh Sidhu's conviction in 30-year-old road rage case

The Income Tax (IT) department on Thursday seized two bank accounts of Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu for non-payment of taxes.

While the former cricketer's tax dues stand at Rs. 52 lakh, payments to be made were towards dress expenses (Rs. 28,38,405), tour and travelling expenses (Rs. 38,24,282), salary expense (Rs. 47,11,400) and petrol and diesel expenses (Rs. 17,80,358).

The IT department noted that the Congress leader had failed to provide documentary evidence, such as bills or invoices in support of his claim during the course of assessment proceedings. Since the authenticity of the transactions could not be established, 30 percent of the total expenses were disallowed in order to prevent leakage of revenue.

"The assessee had gone in to appeal against the order on January 17 last year, but the Commissioner of Income-tax (Appeals) or CIT (A) passed the order favouring the revenue and not provided any relief to the assessee, as he had failed to provide any documentary evidence in support of his claim," an official statement noted.

Punjab will soon have a fire safety training centre and a Rs 500 crore plan has been submitted to the Directorate General of Fire Services and Civil Defence for transforming fire services, state Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu said here today.

He said the Centre has assured every possible help to the state in this regard.

Besides, a separate project worth Rs 262.50 crore has been submitted to the Union Urban Development Ministry, Sidhu said.

The minister said till date, the fire services sector has been largely ignored which accounted for the numerous fire accidents in Punjab, and asserted that he has instructed the department to prepare detailed project reports to address the issue.

He said the Centre has granted approval for the opening of a fire safety training centre.

Sidhu said he also got a favourable response from the Union Minister of State for Urban Development Hardeep Puri to whom a Rs 262 crore project was submitted.

The state government would take special care to ensure that no fireman goes into the fire extinguishing operations without ultra-modern fire suit, he said.

The minister said the Fire Prevention and Fire Safety Act would be enforced strictly.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said Thursday he had no objection to his colleague Navjot Singh Sidhu doing his television show, if that is his main source of income.&nbsp;

Sidhu, who holds the portfolios of Cultural Affairs, Archives and Museums in the newly-formed state government, has been criticised for his appearance in &quot;The Kapil Sharma Show&quot;. He has defended himself by saying that he does TV shows to support his family and run his home.

Amarinder Singh clarified that was waiting for the opinion of the state&#39;s top law officer since he was not aware of the legal aspects of the issue.

Punjab Advocate General Atul Nanda will reportedly deliver his verdict tonight (March 23) to the Chief Minister.

The Punjab chief minister&#39;s personal opinion was that Sidhu be allowed to make his living by continuing with his TV show, an official release on his behalf stated.&nbsp;

&quot;How does one live without adequate income?&quot; the press release said.

It added: Do they (those opposing Sidhu&#39;s appearance on the TV show) want to make ministers corrupt (by stopping them from earning their livelihood)?&quot;

The Chief Minister clarified that he did not personally think there was any conflict of interest, as stated by the Attorney General of India.

Amarinder Singh had earlier said he had no objection on Sidhu continuing with his television shows, but would change his portfolio of culture minister if it was in conflict with his show.

Amarinder Singh also said he would ask Congress president Sonia Gandhi to appoint someone else as the state party president since, as the chief minister, he could not handle both posts.

Amarinder Singh is on his first visit to the national capital since taking charge as chief minister.

He is holding a series of meetings with government&#39;s top brass.

He met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and asked him to extend the farmers&#39; loan waivers in Uttar Pradesh to Punjab.&nbsp;

&quot;I mentioned the debt waiver issue to the Prime Minister. It was an extension of the demand we made earlier when we had gone to meet the Prime Minister as part of a Congress delegation led by party vice-president Rahul Gandhi. I said the debt loan waiver should be extended to Punjab farmers along the lines of Uttar Pradesh,&quot; Singh said after his meeting.

This was his first meeting with the Prime Minister after becoming the chief minister.

Sidhu may have to stop TV shows if he wants to retain tourism ministry: Amarinder Singh

Former BJP leader Navjot Singh Sidhu today announced his own political party named Awaz-e-Punjab (Voice of Punjab), just months before election in Punjab, a state in north India. 
 
The announcement comes as a blow for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who were pinning their hopes on Sidhu to play a key role in their election campaign.&nbsp;AAP is an Indian political party that spawned off the popular anti-graft campaign named India Against Corruption. 
 
Sidhu&#39;s&nbsp;party will be formally launched in the next 3-4 days, according to Indian news agency PTI. 
 
Sidhu&#39;s wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, put a poster on Facebook where they are flanked by&nbsp;suspended Akali leader Pargat Singh and the Bains brothers of Ludhiana. 
 
In the poster, the fledgling party&#39;s members vow to &quot;raise voice against those who have destroyed Punjab&quot;.

However, on August 19, Kejriwal tweeted that the cricketer-turned-politician just needed &quot;time to think&quot; and that he had &quot;not put any pre-condition&quot;, a reference to speculation that Sidhu wanted to be the chief ministerial face of the AAP. 
 
He also added that his respect for Sidhu would continue irrespective of whether &quot;he joins (AAP) or not&quot;. 
 
The news comes at a time when the AAP is already bogged down with the prospect of a vertical split after its state convenor Sucha Singh Chhotepur was sacked over allegations of bribery. &nbsp; 
 
Even Congress, an opposition party, tried to court Sidhu after he resigned from Rajya Sabha (upper house of the Parliament of India).
