<p>Air pollution over northern India has plummeted to a 20-year-low for this time of the year, according to satellite data published by US space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).</p>

<p>The US space agency's satellite sensors observed aerosol levels at a 20-year low post the countrywide lockdown, implemented to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.</p>

<p>"We knew we would see changes in atmospheric composition in many places during the lockdown," said Pawan Gupta, a Universities Space Research Association (USRA) scientist at NASA''s Marshall Space Flight Center. "But I have never seen aerosol values so low in the Indo-Gangetic Plain at this time of year," added Mr Gupta.</p>

<p>Acting Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Alice G Wells tweeted, "These images from NASA were taken each spring starting in 2016 and show a 20-year low in airborne particle levels over India. When India and the world are ready to work and travel again, let's not forget that collaborative action can result in cleaner air."</p>

<p>The data published with maps show aerosol optical depth (AOD) in 2020 compared to the average for 2016-2019. Aerosol optical depth is a measure of how light is absorbed or reflected by airborne particles as it travels through the atmosphere.</p>

<p>If aerosols are concentrated near the surface, an optical depth of 1 or above indicates very hazy conditions. An optical depth, or thickness, of less than 0.1 over the entire atmospheric vertical column is considered "clean." The data were retrieved by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite.</p>

<p>In the first few days of the lockdown, it was difficult to observe a change in the pollution signature. "We saw an aerosol decrease in the first week of the shutdown, but that was due to a combination of rain and the lockdown," said Mr Gupta.</p>

<p>Around March 27, heavy rain poured over vast areas of northern India and helped clear the air of aerosols. Aerosol concentrations usually increase again after such heavy precipitation.</p>

<p>"After the rainfall, I was really impressed that aerosol levels did not go up and return to normal. We saw a gradual decrease and things have been staying at the level we might expect without anthropogenic emissions," Mr Gupta said.</p>

<p>On March 25, the Indian government placed its 1.3 billion citizens under a strict lockdown to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The countrywide mandate decreased activity at factories and severely reduced car, bus, truck and aeroplane traffic. Every year, aerosols from anthropogenic (human-made) sources contribute to unhealthy levels of air pollution in many Indian cities.</p>

<p>Aerosols are tiny solid and liquid particles suspended in the air that reduce visibility and can damage the human lungs and heart.</p>

<p>In southern India though, the story is a little hazier. Satellite data show aerosol levels have not yet decreased to the same extent. In fact, levels seem to be slightly higher than in the past four years. The reasons are unclear but could be related to recent weather patterns, agricultural fires, winds or other factors.</p>

<p>"This a model scientific experiment," Robert Levy, program leader for NASA's MODIS aerosol products, said about the lockdown and its effects on pollution.</p>

<p>"We have a unique opportunity to learn how the atmosphere reacts to sharp and sudden reductions in emissions from certain sectors. This can help us separate how natural and human sources of aerosols affect the atmosphere," Mr Levy added.</p>

<p>NASA has picked Masten Space Systems to deliver and operate eight payloads to the Moon's South Pole in 2022. This will be a part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative as part of the agency's Artemis programme, the US space agency said on Wednesday.</p>

<p>This will help lay the foundation for human expeditions to the lunar surface beginning in 2024.</p>

<p>Masten is the fourth company awarded a lunar delivery contract under CLPS, after NASA announced that three other companies would be tasked with taking payloads back in May, 2019.</p>

<p>The payloads include nine instruments to assess the composition of the lunar surface, test precision landing technologies, and evaluate the radiation on the Moon.</p>

<p>Masten Space Systems will land these payloads on the Moon with its XL-1 lander, NASA said.</p>

<p>"Commercial industry is critical to making our vision for lunar exploration a reality. The science and technology we are sending to the lunar surface ahead of our crewed missions will help us understand the lunar environment better than we ever have before," NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a statement.</p>

<p>"These CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services ) deliveries are on the cutting edge of our work to do great science and support human exploration of the Moon. I`m happy to welcome another of our innovative companies to the group that is ready to start taking our payloads to the Moon as soon as possible," Bridenstine said.</p>

<p>The payloads have been developed from the two recent NASA Provided Lunar Payloads (NPLP) and Lunar Surface Instrument and Technology Payloads (LSITP) solicitations.</p>

<p>More than 3 billion of the world's population has been completely cut-off from each other.</p>

<p>Until the world collectively flattens the coronavirus curve, as South Korea was able to, things are expected to stay the same.</p>

<p>As isolation takes a toll on people, we bring to you narratives of&nbsp;those who have had to live in isolation for a long time: astronauts!</p>

<p><strong>"Do things that scare you!"</strong></p>

<p>An astronaut has now made a video giving people tips on how to deal with enforced social isolation.</p>

<p>“Do engage in things which scare you, dig into them and become an expert”.</p>

<p>A retired astronaut, Chris Hadfield, 60, who authored the book “An astronaut’s guide to life on earth” had this to say:&nbsp;</p>

<p>He further added, "to be isolated for a long time can be sort of frightening. Because you don't know what to expect. And whenever I’m frightened I try and really dig into the actual risks, the actual dangers. Become an expert on the thing that is scaring me. And that helps me deal with my natural fear".</p>

<p>Hadfield further said this is the time for one to master new skills, like playing the guitar, or learning a new language.</p>

<p>However, he believes that the best thing one can do right now is taking care of themselves and their families.</p>

<p>"Once you understand the risk, your mission, your sense of purpose, and your obligations, then take action. Start doing things. They don't have to be the things that you always did before. Take care of family, start a new project, learn to play guitar, study another language, read a book, write, create", he said on his YouTube channel.</p>

<p>&nbsp;"So take care of yourself, take care of your family, take care of your friends, take care of your spaceship", he asserted.</p>

<p><strong>"Have a routine!"</strong></p>

<p>Nick Hague, an astronaut with NASA has spent several months on board the International Space Station. He drew parallels between being locked down and being on the space station.&nbsp;</p>

<p>His mantra is simple - have a routine!</p>

<p>“It's simple stuff. It's to have a routine, you know, put a schedule together and stick to the schedule, because then everybody inside the house knows what to expect throughout the day. And just having some control and some certainty over how your day is going to play out is a huge psychological boost", he said.</p>

<p>Hague also reiterated the importance of creating one's own personal space.</p>

You know, the space station is as big as a six person home. And we have our own little crew quarters up there, which is about the size of a closet. But that's all I needed to be able to close the door and just kind of escape all the hustle and bustle and everything else that was going on and just focus on kind of trying to collect myself and my thoughts and being able to escape. And so having that personal space, that personal time is super important, too”, he said.</p>

<p>But at the same time Hague emphasises the need to talk, to express and to communicate and try and understand one's family members.</p>

<p>Here’s what Hague had to say on how not to annoy people who are living with you during a lockdown.</p>

<p>"Yeah, you know, and I'd argue that you know, the people that are closest to us, the family, the loved ones, we know exactly how to annoy them. You know what their buttons are. And so it's really just trying to understand, you know, everybody is going through this. And so the key is communication. Express how you're feeling and listen to others, express how they're feeling and just being able to be open and talk about what everybody's going through. We'll let you identify the support that you need and the support that you need to give. And that's just going to make it so much easier. So talk. Don't bottle things up", he said.</p>

You know, the space station is as big as a six person home. And we have our own little crew quarters up there, which is about the size of a closet. But that's all I needed to be able to close the door and just kind of escape all the hustle and bustle and everything else that was going on and just focus on kind of trying to collect myself and my thoughts and being able to escape. And so having that personal space, that personal time is super important, too”, he said. But at the same time Hague emphasises the need to talk, to express and to communicate and try and understand one's family members. "Yeah, you know, and I'd argue that you know, the people that are closest to us, the family, the loved ones, we know exactly how to annoy them. You know what their buttons are. Express how you're feeling and listen to others, express how they're feeling and just being able to be open and talk about what everybody's going through. We'll let you identify the support that you need and the support that you need to give. And that's just going to make it so much easier. So talk. Don't bottle things up", he said.

The NASA and contractors teams will complete an orderly shutdown that puts all hardware in a safe condition until work can resume.” The Space Launch System is a powerful deep-space rocket to transport astronauts to the Moon and beyond while Orion is the crew module.</p>

<p>The virus outbreak could hit the US plans to return to the Moon by 2024. “We realize there will be impacts to NASA missions, but as our teams work to analyze the full picture and reduce risks we understand that our top priority is the health and safety of the NASA workforce,” Bridenstine said.</p>

<p>A manned return to the Moon is the first part of the Artemis program to set up a long-term colony and test technologies for a crewed mission to Mars in the 2030s.</p>

<p>To snap these pictures and create a panorama, NASA's Curiosity rover used the photo lens on the rover's Mast Camera.</p>

<p>It relied on its medium-angle lens to produce a lower-resolution, nearly 650-million-pixel panorama that includes the rover's deck and a robotic arm.</p>

<p>Both panoramas reveal Curiosity's current home of Glen Torridon.</p>

<p>"This is the first time during the mission we've dedicated our operations to a stereo 360-degree panorama," said&nbsp;Ashwin Vasavada, Curiosity's project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.</p>

<p>On Mars, Glen Torridon is full of intriguing clay mineral deposits that Curiosity has been observing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It's located in Gale Crater, a vast and dry ancient lake bed with a 16,404-foot mountain at its centre.&nbsp;</p>

<p>American astronauts are to ascend to the International Space Station – with an eye toward the Moon and Mars – as NASA announced that applications are being accepted from March 2 to 31 for the next class of Artemis Generation astronauts. Finalisation of candidates is to be completed by the middle of 2021.</p>

350 people have been selected by NASA since the 1960s to train as astronaut candidates for arduous missions in the name of space exploration.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Their current astronaut corp has 48 souls, with room for more as expeditions involving multiple destinations that will propel exploration forward as part of Artemis missions and beyond.</p>

<p>Jim Bridenstine, NASA Administrator stated that they were celebrating 20 years of continuous presence aboard the International Space Station in low-Earth orbit as of 2020 and are on the verge of sending the first woman and next man to the Moon by 2024.</p>

<p>“For the handful of highly talented women and men we will hire to join our diverse astronaut corps, it’s an incredible time in human spaceflight to be an astronaut. We’re asking all eligible Americans if they have what it to takes to apply beginning March 2,” he added.</p>

<p>Citizenship of the United States of America and a Master's Degree in a STEM field constitutes the basic requirements to apply. Fields such as engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, or mathematics, from an accredited institution, will be considered.</p>

<p>Master's Degree requirements can also be met by fulfilling any one of the below-mentioned criteria:&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>1: </strong>Two years (36 semester hours or 54 quarter hours) of work toward a PhD program in related science, technology, engineering or math field;</p>

<p><strong>2: </strong>A completed doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathic medicine degree;</p>

<p><strong>3: </strong>Completion (or current enrollment that will result in completion by June 2021) of a nationally recognized test pilot school program.</p>

<p>An alternative to working at the International Space Station could be a launch from NASA’s powerful new Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft. The spacecraft will be docked at the Gateway in lunar orbit before taking a new human landing system to the Moon’s surface.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA plans on returning humans to the moon by 2024, after which plans are being made to establish sustainable lunar exploration by 2028. Experience and knowledge gained on and around the moon will allow NASA to send the first humans to Mars, a feat they plan to achieve by mid-2030s.</p>

<p>Astronomers in the United States have spotted a new "mini-moon" circling the planet Earth which is about the&nbsp;size of a car.</p>

<p>According to the astronomers, Kacper Wierzchos and Teddy Pruyne of NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona, the mini-moon is between 2 to 3 meters wide.</p>

<p>However, Earth's new neighbour is not in a stable orbit around the planet and is most likely to escape by April.</p>

<p>"It is heading away from the Earth-moon system as we speak," Grigori Fedorets, a research fellow at Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland, told New Scientist magazine and was likely to escape in April.</p>

<p>NASA's robotic InSight lander has for the first time established that Mars is seismically active.</p>

<p>The recent study claimed on Monday that Mars is a constantly tremoring "living" body as they unveiled measurements of seismic activity on the red planet showing similar tremble rates to Earth or the Moon.</p>

<p>The findings were published in the journals Nature Geoscience and Nature Communications.</p>

<p>For 15 months NASA's InSight robot craft scoured the surface of Earth's neighbour, and measured hundreds of so-called "Marsquakes".</p>

<p>These included several tremors that contained the same frequency patterns as tremors caused by the movement of Earth's own tectonic plates.</p>

<p>The InSight lander, which touched down on the planet's surface in November 2018 to begin the first mission to study the deep interior of Mars, has since detected around 450 marsquakes.</p>

Citizen scientists helping public see Jupiter like it's never been seen before

<p>Teams from around the globe will compete in NASA's Human Exploration Rover Challenge at the US Space &amp; Rocket Center in Aprile, the space agency announced on Wednesday.</p>

<p>According to the statement, over 100 teams are expected to participate, including teams from 27 states and 11 countries. The countries include Brazil, Germany, Egypt, Singapore, India and Mexico.</p>

<p>"The 26th edition of the annual event, managed by the Office of STEM Engagement at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, features students from high schools, colleges and universities around the world designing, engineering and testing a human-powered rover to take on a course simulating terrain found on the Moon and Mars, as well as other planets, moons and asteroids," NASA said in the announcement.</p>

<p>One female and one male driver will pilot each team’s lightweight rover across a gruelling half-mile course that features obstacles and scientific challenges designed to force teams to think like NASA mission planners and planetary explorers.</p>

<p>The Discovery Program develops relatively low-cost robotic-exploration efforts to develop concept studies for possible new missions.</p>

<p>According to Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/node/280673">NASA's </a>Science Mission Directorate, "these selected missions have the potential to transform our understanding of some of the solar system's most active and complex worlds".</p>

<p>The teams behind the four mission concepts will each receive $3 million to continue maturing their ideas over the next nine months and submit reports to NASA.</p>

<p>These reports will be evaluated by agency officials.</p>

<p>Out of these four, only two will be selected for continued development toward flight.</p>

<p>Previously, two of the Discovery missions called Lucy and Psyche were selected for launch in 2021 and 2022 respectively.</p>
