Cape Town, South Africa
Pakistan veterans Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan laid the foundation for a convincing, series-clinching 81-run win over South Africa in the second one-day international at Newlands on Thursday.
Pakistan's total of 329 all out was set up by Babar (73) and captain Rizwan (80), who put on 115 off 142 balls for the third wicket.
Heinrich Klaasen made 97 for South Africa but the hosts were bowled out for 248.
Fast bowlers Shaheen Afridi (four for 47) and Naseem Shah (three for 37) were the main destroyers.
The win gave Pakistan an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
It was their fifth successive series win – and the third for the Champions Trophy hosts in the southern hemisphere season, following victories in Australia and Zimbabwe.
"It's a team game, from beginning to end all of the guys are involved and contributing," said Rizwan.
Babar and Rizwan, whose combined 204 one-day caps exceeded the total of the rest of the team, batted soundly and sensibly before Babar was out with the total on 192 in the 33rd over.
Rizwan followed three overs later to a sensational diving catch off his own bowling by 18-year-old one-day debutant Kwena Maphaka.
But the stage had been set for some power hitting by the batsmen who followed, notably player of the match Kamran Ghulam, who hit five sixes in making 63 off 32 balls.
With a licence to go for their shots, Pakistan scored 161 runs in the last 17 overs while losing their remaining six wickets.

"Me and Babar started slowly. We were looking for 300 but we got 320-plus. I have never seen Kamran Ghulam play an innings like that," said Rizwan.
Left-arm fast-bowler Maphaka took heavy punishment but picked up four wickets while conceding 72 runs.
South Africa scored more briskly than Pakistan for most of their innings but although all of their first six batsmen made starts, only Klaasen made a significant score.
Klaasen, who made 86 in a losing cause in the first match in Paarl on Tuesday, hit eight fours and four sixes off 74 balls. He was the last man out, caught on the deep midwicket boundary.

AUS vs PAK 1st T20I Live Streaming: When & where to watch Australia vs Pakistan live on laptop, TV

Pakistan's new ODI and T20I captain Mohammad Rizwan broke his silence on Team India’s Champions Trophy 2025 travel stance. As the BCCI confirmed denying sending Men in Blue across the border for the eight-team tournament scheduled for February-March early next year, the PCB referred the matter to the Pakistan government. Though the host board has sought ICC’s advice on the same, reports from Pakistan suggest they are mulling boycotting playing India at all levels.

Currently involved in the bilateral series against Australia Down Under, Rizwan addressed this matter ahead of the 1st T20I at the Gabba in Brisbane, saying the PCB will take the final call on this matter, adding should the BCCI decide to send the Indian Team to Pakistan, we will welcome them with open arms.

“KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav are all welcome. All the players who will come, we will welcome them. This is not our decision, this is PCB’s decision,” Rizwan said in the pre-match presser. “Whatever decision will take place, hopefully, they will all discuss and take the right call. But we are hopeful that if the Indian players will come, we will welcome them,” he continued.

On the other hand, veteran Pakistan keeper-batter Rashid Latif shared contrasting views on it, saying Pakistan should boycott playing India, adding had he been in power, he would have taken this bold step.

“There’s a big possibility that Pakistan can stop playing cricket against India. Had I been in power, then, yes, I may have taken this strong step. I would not blame anyone for this. If you don’t want to play (in Pakistan), then don’t play against us (at all). If I had been there, I would have taken this decision, and fought against the BCCI,” Latif said while speaking on PTI Videos.

The Champions Trophy 2025 situation

The PCB, ICC and Champions Trophy 2025 future are all in the fix relating to this situation, with the Pakistan government informing PCB of this event not going out of the country irrespective of the rumours of Dubai, Sri Lanka or even South Africa being considered as alternatives.

“We have been told by our government not to move any game out of Pakistan, and that will be our stand when the time comes. Right now, the ICC has just informed us about India’s decision. We have the hosting rights for the Champions Trophy so there is no way we can move the games outside Pakistan,” a PCB official said on condition of anonymity, as quoted by the Indian Express.

Mohammad Rizwan breaks silence on India’s Champions Trophy travel stance, says 'KL Rahul, Suryakumar...'

Pakistan white-ball skipper Mohammad Rizwan praised his team for winning the second ODI series in Australia and first since 2002 after winning the third ODI on Sunday (Nov 10). Pakistan won the three-ODI series 2-1 and became only the second team in history after South Africa to win two ODI series in Australia.

"Special moment for me, the nation will be very happy today, we didn't perform as per expectations in the last couple of years. I'm the captain only for the toss and presentations - everyone gives me suggestions on the field, the batting group and the bowling group," said Rizwan at the post-match presentation.

"All the credit to the bowlers, Australia in Australia isn't easy, the conditions suit their style of playing, but the bowlers were outstanding. Also, credit to the two openers, they made the chases easy. I don't care a lot about the press, but the people back home are always behind us and I want to dedicate this victory to them," he added.

Pakistan had lost the first match of the series by two wickets as Australia won a cliffhanger. The visitors, however, bounced back in style and won the next two games to win the series.

The series win comes at a time when Pakistan Cricket is reeling under pressure which started after their pre-semifinal exit from ODI World Cup 2023 and then in T20 World Cup 2024.

Pakistan lost a Test series a couple of months back against Bangladesh at home which further deepened their woes. Their newly appointed white-ball coach Gary Kirsten left the job without coaching them in a single match amid the drama around coaches, PCB chairman, captain and selection committee.

The Men In Green, however, turned it around with a home Test series win against England and now a win in an away tour against Australia will their confidence good.

'Captain only for toss and presentations,' says Pak skipper Mohammad Rizwan after ODI series win in Australia

Saim Ayub hit 42 and Abdullah Shafique 37 as Pakistan raced to a commanding eight-wicket victory and their first one-day series win in Australia for 22 years on Sunday.

After bowling out the woeful world champions for a miserly 140 at Perth Stadium, Mohammad Rizwan's team reached their target in the 27th over. The impressive performance, aided by high-quality bowling from Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, ensured a first ODI series win in Australia since 2002.

They lost a tense opening match in Melbourne by two wickets, but bounced back with an emphatic nine-wicket victory in Adelaide.

"It's a special moment for me and the fans," said captain Rizwan. "I'll give all the credit to the bowlers. Beating Australia in Australia is not easy."

"But Saim and Abdullah have given us a couple of great starts, too," he added. "The fans love us regardless of whether we win or lose, and I really appreciate that."

The hosts rested Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc in Perth ahead of the Test series against India starting this month, and they were missed.

Shafique and Ayub began aggressively and rode their luck, with little spark from the bowlers. Ayub, who smashed 82 in Adelaide, survived two dropped catches, by Lance Morris and Spencer Johnson, as he swung the bat. Shafique was also put down on 28, by Adam Zampa, as they reached the halfway point in the chase without loss in the 14th over.

Australia finally got a reward when Morris caught and bowled Shafique and then bowled Ayub five balls later.

But Rizwan (30) and Babar Azam (28) kept calm to steer them home.

Outplayed

Rizwan won the toss and sent in Australia, who were no match for Afridi (3-32), Shah (3-54) and Rauf (2-24).

Sean Abbott top-scored with 30 before they were bundled out in the 32nd over.

"It's pretty disappointing, to be honest," said skipper Josh Inglis. "I think after probably the first three-quarters of the first game (in Melbourne) we were totally outplayed."

"Not enough runs on the board in games two and three."

Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matt Short again opened, desperate for runs after failing to make an impact at Melbourne and Adelaide. But on a pitch suited to quick bowlers, Fraser-McGurk once more flopped, nicking a swinging Shah delivery to wicketkeeper Rizwan on seven.

Aaron Hardie, at three in place of Smith, lasted 13 balls for his 12 before being caught in the slip off the dangerous Afridi. That brought Inglis to the crease, but he too departed cheaply for seven, skying a Shah bouncer that Rizwan collected to leave Australia on 56-3 in the 11th over.

Rauf then accounted for Short (22) before youngster Cooper Connolly, in only his second ODI, was forced to retire hurt on seven after a blow to his hand.

Out-of-form Glenn Maxwell only survived two balls, with Rauf bagging him for the third time this series, caught at point by Ayub, while Marcus Stoinis added just eight to the score as Australia stumbled to 88-6.

Abbott and Adam Zampa (13) shared a handy 30-run partnership before the tail was mopped up.

Ayub, Rauf star in Perth One-Dayer as Pakistan create history with second ODI series win in Australia

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named Mohammad Rizwan as the new white-ball captain. This comes after Babar Azam stood down from the white-ball captaincy recently.

The development was announced a day after Pakistan beat England 2-1 in the home Test series - their first series victory under new skipper Shan Masood who had replaced Babar after the ODI World Cup 2023.

The PCB also announced their contract with only Babar and Rizwan being the players in the top category. The 32-year-old's first assignment as captain is going to be the ODI and T20I series in Australia and Zimbabwe.

"I am committed to giving my absolute best in this role and look forward to working closely with the selectors, coaches and my immensely talented teammates," Rizwan said in a statement via the PCB.

"Together, we aim to meet and exceed the expectations of our fans and supporters," the statement further read.

The PCB also announced the return of Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Azam for the Australia tour after the trio was 'rested' from the last two England Tests.

Salman Ali Agha, who is part of all four squads, has been named the vice captain. Agha will also lead the T20I side against Zimbabwe with Rizwan sitting the series out.

In other notable contract news, the PCB has kept Test skipper Shan Masood in grade B of the central contract list with a condition. Masood will remain in the grade till the time he's the captain.

There's been a lot of scrutiny on Masood and had it not been the series win against England, he would sure have been out as the skipper.

Pakistan's Australia tour starts November 4 while the Zimbabwe tour is from December 24-December 5.

PCB names Mohammad Rizwan as new white-ball skipper

Cricket great Younis Khan has overlooked Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi as Babar Azam's potential replacement for Pakistan's new white-ball captaincy, naming a surprise choice in top-order batter Fakhar Zaman to take over the vacant role. Currently in Adelaide to promote the white-ball series against Australia starting November 4, Khan is surprised that no one is talking about Fakhar, who continues to perform every time irrespective of the format.

Shortly after getting sacked as Pakistan's all-format captain after they failed to reach the 2023 ODI World Cup semis, the PCB reinstated Babar into the leadership group, announcing him as the white-ball skipper ahead of the T20 World Cup in the Americas earlier.

That, however, didn’t change their fortunes, as Pakistan fumbled big time, losing to co-host and debutants USA and arch-rivals India in two straight matches before getting knocked out in the Group Stage.

The results mounted pressure on Babar Azam, with his below-par performances since then and further losing the home Test series to Bangladesh, worsening his case.

Earlier this week, Babar took to social media to announce his decision to step aside from the role, citing his willingness to concentrate more on the batting front.

"I was the first guy last month to suggest to him that if he wanted to play and spend his career the way he had performed in the past, I think it's better for him to play as a player and to perform for Pakistan team," Younis said.

"Especially if you're losing against India, you're gone. But that is how a leader is born and that is the demand of international cricket. You have to combat these kind of pressures, so I hope the next captain will do a fantastic job.

Younis Khan overlooks Shaheen, Rizwan for white-ball captaincy, picks Fakhar Zaman to lead Pakistan Down Under

After Babar Azam stepped down as the Pakistan white-ball captain, on Wednesday (Oct 2), Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to name three separate captains, according to sources. The PCB was set to hand over Babar the ODI captaincy as well, ahead of the upcoming white-ball games, however, the right-hander resigned via a post on X, formerly Twitter. Thus, it has added to the PCB's headache as they need a captain, or two, for ODIs and T20Is and also a strong deputy for the skipper to be able to take breaks and manage his workload.

Insiders suggest that appointing the next captain won't be a cakewalk for white-ball coach Gary Kirsten or the selection committee. "Mohammad Rizwan is the obvious choice for the white-ball captaincy given that, along with Babar, he is the only player who is an automatic selection in all formats of the game," claimed an insider.

Notably, Babar, Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi are the only three all-format players for Pakistan. Thus, managing workload is going to be a stern task for Pakistan, who are set to play a plethora of games in the upcoming months.

HECTIC SCHEDULE

Talking about Pakistan's schedule, they are hosting England in three Tests starting on Oct 7. Following that, they are set to play 18 ODIs and T20Is in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa from Nov-Dec, followed by a two-Test series in South Africa.

After returning home in Jan 2025, Pakistan will host a two-Test series versus West Indies and an ODI tri-series featuring New Zealand and South Africa in the run-up to the ICC Champions Trophy, also to be held in Pakistan. Post that, the Asian giants will leave for New Zealand for a white-ball series before the next edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) kicks off.

Another source pointed out, "Babar was captain in all three formats for more than three years, but Kirsten and the selectors have reservations over whether Rizwan could handle the workload in the coming months while also leading the side in ODIs and T20Is."

It is possible that the PCB might have separate ODI and T20I captains or appoint a strong vice-captain to Rizwan, for him to take ample breaks and manage his workload.

For the white-ball vice-captaincy, Shadab Khan, Saim Ayub, Test captain Shan Masood, and Shaheen are the obvious choices. They can also be considered for the captaincy role if Rizwan declines the offer or is overlooked.

As per sources, Kirsten has informed the PCB that, following Babar's loss of confidence and form, he cannot think of any player who could handle captaincy pressures in two formats.

After Babar Azam's resignation, Pakistan set to name 3 separate captains: Reports

India and Pakistan might not have played bilateral cricket for over a decade, but if the latest reports are to be believed, they might play together in the same team. Yes, you read it right.

For cricket fans worldwide, watching ace players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah play in the same team alongside Pakistan’s Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi would be a dream. Jay Shah, the new ICC chairman, is said to be bringing back the now-defunct Afro-Asia Cup.

Last played in 2007, the Afro-Asia Cup, first thought of by Jagmohan Dalmiya and Percy Sonn, could pave its way back; however, not so soon.

Considering grand changes happening within the ICC and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), with Shah winning the race to head the apex body and PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi assumed to replace Shah as ACC head, the return of this intercontinental competition is on the cards.

Per the report in the Cricbuzz, Shah, BCCI secretary, showed interest in bringing this competition back to the international calendar a couple of years ago; however, plenty of work needs to be done to make this a reality.

"We have tried to revive the Afro-Asia Cup. Jay was on board, and Mahinda Vallipuram (head of Malaysia Cricket and current ICC director) actively participated in the discussions," Sumod Damodar, a veteran ICC hand, said in a chat with Cricbuzz.

Damodar, Botswana Cricket head, also contesting for a place in the CEC from Associate Nations, was one of those involved to stage this competition nearly two decades ago.

The beginning of Afro-Asia Cup

Starting in 2005, the first of the two contested editions took place in Centurion and Durban, while Bengaluru and Chennai in India staged the second edition two years later in 2007. As initially planned for three editions, the deal broke due to fallout with the broadcasters.

Damodar also revealed its business model, where 80 per cent of the revenue generated from this tournament would go to the African continent, with the remaining sum distributed among the cash-rich Asian board.

However, per the new plan discussed, the Asian and African cricket boards aim to engage at multiple levels, with matches between the continents to be played in three stages - development (primarily at the under-19 level, seen as an investment), emerging, and pinnacle levels, with the latter involving current international players.

"That is the plan. We have yet to decide on the frequency - whether it will be annual or biennial. Much will depend on the calendar, the Future Tours Programme (FTP), and the international commitments of the players," Damodar continued.

Kohli, Bumrah to pair up with Babar, Rizwan? Reports say now-discarded Afro-Asia Cup could return soon

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan lost his cool on day 5 of the first Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi and threw a ball towards Mohamad Rizwan. It was the 33rd over of Pakistan's second innings as they tired to avoid an innings defeat.

Rizwan was not ready to face the ball by Shakib and stopped him in the tracks following which the bowler threw the ball over Rizwan's head in frustration. Shakib was scolded by the on field umpire for his behaviour. Have a look at the video below:

PAK vs BAN, 1st Test: Shakib throws ball at Rizwan in anger, gets scolded by umpire - WATCH

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has cleared its intentions of prioritising the international calendar by denying the No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) to the star trio of Captain Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Rizwan to play in the Global T20 League in Canada. Per latest reports, the PCB consulted with the three players and the selection committee before taking this call.

This decision came soon after the PCB denied NOC to seamer Naseem Shah to play in The Hundred in the UK. The right-arm pacer was signed for Birmingham Phoenix for a deal worth £125,000.

Pakistan will host multiple teams in the busiest home season in over a century, with two Tests against Bangladesh beginning on August 21. England will tour Pakistan for three Tests before the Men in Green travels abroad for white-ball series against Australia and Zimbabwe.

Pakistan will then tour South Africa for an all-format series during the New Year, and upon returning home, they will host West Indies for two Tests, followed by a tri-series involving South Africa and New Zealand.

Per the slated schedule, Pakistan will also host the eight-team Champions Trophy in February-March, ending their season with an away NZ Tour and 2025 Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Considering eight to nine months of non-stop cricket, the board decided against allocating the NOCs to star players to keep them fresh for the lengthy home season.

“It should be remembered that between August 2024 and March 2025, the Pakistan cricket team has to play nine Tests of the ICC World Test Championship, the ICC Champions Trophy, 14 ODIs and nine T20Is. All three cricketers play all three formats, and Pakistan will need their services in the next eight months,” a PCB statement reads.

It, however, is significant in plenty of ways, as despite the mention of every contracted player allowed to participate in two franchise-based T20 leagues worldwide yearly, given it shouldn’t collide with the international calendar, the PCB denied these players by not providing the NOCs.

PCB prioritises international calendar, denies NOCs to star trio to play in Global T20 Canada

Pakistan's wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan has admitted that Babar Azam-led Men in Green's criticism is 'justified' for their shambolic run in the 2024 T20 World Cup, which was held in West Indies and the USA. In the 20-nation mega event, eventually won by Team India, Babar-led Pakistan were eliminated in the group stage after defeats versus India and USA. Their ordinary run evoked a lot of criticism from all corners and Rizwan stated that the 2009 winners deserved it since their performance wasn't in accordance with expectations.

The Pakistan opener compared the team's condition to an ill person and pointed out that the PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has the right to make wholesome changes to the side.

In this regard, Rizwan added, "We are disappointed with our performance in the T20 World Cup. There are multiple reasons behind our losses. Pakistan were placed in Group A in the T20 WC along with India, USA, Canada and Ireland. Pakistan's criticism justified, says Mohammad Rizwan after Babar Azam & Co's T20 World Cup failure

Pakistan cricketer Muhammad Rizwan has come under the scanner for a support tweet for teammate Haris Rauf. After a video showing Rauf's altercation with a Pakistani fan went viral on social media, Rizwan posted a message on X (formerly Twitter) to back his colleague, but the situation took a turn for the worse.

Rizwan's post angered Indian fans, who came out in numbers to criticise the Pakistan star. In the post, Rizwan mentioned that it didn't matter if the fan was from India or Pakistan, even though it was cleared by the fan himself that he was from Pakistan.

"It is irrelevant whether the person who disrespected Haris Rauf was from Pakistan or India. What truly matters is that this individual lacked values and manners," wrote Rizwan.

Muhammad Rizwan's 'India' comment triggers controversy as fans slam Pakistani cricketer

Mohammad Rizwan and captain Babar Azam starred as Pakistan stayed alive at the T20 World Cup with a seven-wicket win over Canada on Tuesday (Jun 11).

Knowing defeat would condemn them to a shock first-round exit, Rizwan and Babar put on a match-winning second-wicket partnership of 63 as Pakistan reached their target of 107 with 15 balls to spare.

Opener Rizwan finished undefeated on 53 off 53 balls with two fours and a six for his 29th T20 international half-century while Babar made 33 off as many balls with one four and a six.

The victory came after the 2009 champions and runners-up in 2022 had lost both their first two Group A fixtures.

A stunning super-over humiliation at the hands of the United States was followed by a six-run loss to bitter rivals India in a game where they failed to chase down a modest 120-run target.

However, Tuesday's win at the same Nassau County International Cricket Stadium where they came up short against India may still not be enough to secure a place in the second round Super Eights.

Pakistan have two points with one game left while India and the United States both have four points from two wins apiece and remain favourites to progress to the next stage.

Despite the loss, Canada, with two points from three games, are still in the hunt for a Super Eights spot.

Dilon Heyliger took two of the Pakistan wickets to fall, dismissing recalled opener Saim Ayub for six and claiming the prized wicket of Babar, both men caught behind.

Earlier, Pakistan restricted Canada to 106-7 despite opener Aaron Johnson hitting his sixth international fifty.

Johnson demonstrated his attacking intent from the start, cracking successive boundaries off the first two balls he faced from Shaheen Shah Afridi.

The Jamaica-born 33-year-old opener made 52 off 44 balls with four boundaries and four sixes before he was eventually out in the 14th over with the score on 73-6, clean-bowled by Naseem Shah.

Johnson was the only batsman in the top six to reach double figures as Pakistan's seamers took wickets on a regular basis.

Mohammad Amir clean-bowled Navneet Dhaliwal (four) with a 141 km/h delivery which sliced through the defences of the opener.

Shaheen recovered from conceding 10 runs off his first over to get rid of Pargat Singh (two) before Nicholas Kirton (one) was run out by a superb throw by Imad Wasim.

Haris Rauf sent back Shreyas Movva (2) -- for his 100th wicket in the format -- and Ravinderpal Singh (0) in the space of three balls as Canada reached 55-5 after 10 overs.

Once Johnson was out, Canada struggled to press the accelerator and had added just 14 more runs off 20 balls when skipper Saad Bin Zafar (10) top-edged Amir to Rizwan behind the stumps.

Amir finished with 2-13 while Rauf claimed 2-26.

Pakistan keep T20 World Cup hopes alive after convincing win against Canada

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram went on an explosive rant against the men's senior team after it lost the T20 World Cup match against arch-rivals India in a tame manner.

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram went on an explosive rant against the men's senior team after it lost the T20 World Cup match against arch-rivals India in a tame manner. The legendary speedster went after Mohammed Rizwan, Iftikhar Ahmed and Fakhar Zaman among others for not keeping their cool when the situation demanded it. Pakistan lost the match while chasing a lowly target of 120 as Indian bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah, produced a masterclass in defending a total. "They have been playing cricket for 10 years, and I can't teach them. Rizwan has no game awareness," Akram told host broadcaster Star Sports. Pakistan were going at a steady clip up until the 15th over when Bumrah was summoned by skipper Rohit Sharma for his second spell. Rizwan, who was the set batter at the stage, went after Bumrah on the first delivery and saw his offstump uprooted by an inswinging delivery. "He should have known that Bumrah was given the ball to take wickets and that the wise thing would have been to play his deliveries cautiously. But Rizwan went for a big shot and lost his wicket," added Akram. Also read | T20 World Cup: Bumrah's heroics help India floor arch-rivals Pakistan in low-scoring thriller Akram schools players Akram particularly was miffed at Iftikhar Ahmed's batting approach as the supposed finisher of the team. "Iftikhar Ahmed knows one shot on the leg side. He has been a part of the team for years but doesn't know how to bat," said Akram. Akram also pointed towards the politics in the Pakistan cricket setup where batters believe they have immunity from facing any consequence for their actions. "I can't go and tell you about game awareness, Fakhar Zaman. Pakistani players think that if they don't perform well, the coaches will be sacked, and nothing will happen to them. It is time to keep the coaches and change the entire team." "There are players who don't want to talk to each other. This is international cricket, and you play for your country. Make these players sit at home," he added. While India have all but secured a spot in the Super 8 stage after the win, Pakistan stand on the precipice of a shameful group stage exit. The Men-in-Green will have to win their remaining two matches with a big margin and hope that other results go in their favour. (With inputs from agencies)

He achieved this feat with Pakistan’s seven-wicket series-levelling win against Ireland in the second T20I in Dublin. Although among the top playing nations, Babar is ahead of second-placed Eoin Morgan (42) by five more wins, he surpassed Uganda’s captain Brian Masaba (44) for the most wins for a captain across all men’s T20Is. While Babar holds the top spot, the legendary Indian duo of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma are tied at 41 wins each besides their names, sitting on the fifth and sixth spot, respectively. Former Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan is also tied with Morgan with 42 wins as captain in this format, placed ahead of Dhoni and Rohit. However, the seasoned pair of Mohammad Rizwan and leftie Fakhar Zaman bailed the side out of trouble with blistering strokes. While Rizwan continued with his signature T20I style of play, Zaman pressed the accelerator early on to put his team in a commanding position. Hitting six sixes and as many fours, Fakhar scored 79 off 40 balls before getting caught in the deep. The wicketkeeper-batter Azam Khan made his presence felt right away, striking four massive sixes and a four in his brief stay (30* off ten balls) at the crease, as Pakistan completed the run chase inside 17 overs with seven wickets remaining. Rizwan also remained unbeaten on 75 off 46 balls. The final T20I will take place at the same venue on Tuesday (May 14).

After the game that Pakistan won by 10 wickets, breaking the World Cup jinx against India, Virat and Rizwan shared a light moment by hugging each other. Although they faced each other several times after that, the camaraderie has remained the same. ALSO READ: Babar Azam bags massive record in Pakistan’s series-levelling win against Ireland in 2nd T20I Meanwhile, India and Pakistan are set for a marquee face-off in the 2024 T20 World Cup in New York on June 9. The Asian giants are placed in Group A alongside Ireland, Canada and the tournament’s co-host USA. Pakistan return to winnings ways After losing the first T20I to Ireland in Dublin, Pakistan returned to winning ways by claiming a seven-wicket victory the other night. Pakistan bowled first, restricting the hosts to 193 for seven in 20 overs. Ace seamer Shaheen Afridi impressed everyone with his three wickets, and Abbas Afridi picked two, while Mohammad Amir and Naseem Shah bagged a wicket each. Skipper and opener Babar Azam might have registered a zero in the second game, but he surpassed several legends to become the captain with the most wins in men’s T20Is. Besides, Fakhar Zaman and Rizwan shared a 140-run stand for the third wicket before keeper-batter Azam Khan played a blinder to see his team home. While Fakhar got out on 78 off 40 balls, Rizwan remained unbeaten on 75, and Khan, coming in at five, bashed Irish bowlers for 30* off ten balls, including four sixes. The third and final T20I will take place at the same venue on Tuesday (May 14).

'I respect Kohli' - Rizwan wins hearts with warm take on India legend following 2nd T20I win against IRE

During the second T20I of the five-match series between hosts Pakistan and New Zealand, wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan attained a huge feat. The batter achieved the milestone of 3,000 T20I runs, becoming the second from his country to do so after white-ball captain Babar Azam. Thus, Shaheen Afridi lauded Rizwan for his latest heroics on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, and compared him to Sir Don Bradman -- one of the finest batters ever. However, Shaheen's comparisons with Bradman led to his hilarious trolling on social media platforms.

Shaheen's comments were absurd as Rizwan incidentally has the lowest strike-rate among batters to have entered the 3K-run club in the format -- 127.42. Pak vs NZ: 'Bradman of T20 cricket' - Shaheen gets HILARIOUSLY TROLLED for his comments on Rizwan

New Zealand thrashed Pakistan by seven wickets, in chase of 159, in the fourth and penultimate tie at the Hagley Oval, Christchurch on Friday (Jan 19). Thus, the Shaheen Afridi-led Men in Green remain winless and are now on the verge of a series whitewash. Reeling at 20-3, the Black Caps rode on unbeaten fifties from Daryl Mitchell (72 not out) and Glenn Phillips (unbeaten 70) to take their side past the finish line in 18.1 overs.

Earlier in the game, Kiwis won the toss and put Pakistan to bat. The Men in Green lost early wicket in the form of opener Saim Ayub after which Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam tried to steady the ship with a 51-run second-wicket stand. However, Babar fell for 19 after three back-to-back half-centuries in the series. Rizwan carried on from his end with only Mohammad Nawaz's 9-ball 21* helping the Asian side post a decent 158 for 6.

From NZ, Matt Henry (2 for 22), Lockie Ferguson (2 for 27) were the top performers whereas captain Mitchell Santner remained economical, conceding 23 runs in his 4 overs.

With NZ chasing 159, Pakistan were on top courtesy of captain Shaheen's three early strikes. At 20 for 3, New Zealand were on the back foot and in dire need of a big stand. Mitchell and Phillips got together and stitched a 93-ball unbroken 139-run stand for the fourth wicket to take their side out of troubled waters. The duo ran hard between wickets and capitalised on the ball deliveries to keep the scoreboard moving. In addition, Pakistan fielding remained below par with Mitchell getting two reprieves.

Pakistani bowlers remained ineffective after Shaheen's early strikes, with Haris Rauf once again being expensive (3.1-0-29-0). The Men in Green have a herculean task to end the series with a win as they lag behind in terms of a collective effort in all departments.

Pakistan appoint Mohammad Rizwan as vice-captain for New Zealand T20Is

Pakistan posted 313 in their first innings of the Sydney Test despite a poor start to the contest on Wednesday (Jan 3). Already trailing 0-2 in the series, Pat Cummins was the chief architect of Pakistan's downfall as they had a horrible first two sessions on the opening day. However, rescue acts from wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan (88) and Aamer Jamal (82) helped the visitors fight back despite Pat Cummins’ third five-for in as many innings. Australia, on the other hand, closed the day at 6/0 with only one over bowled.

Poor start for Pakistan

Having opted to bat first after winning the toss, skipper Shan Masood’s decision proved wrong as Pakistan lost both openers in the opening two overs. Both Abdullah Shafique and debutant Saim Ayub were dismissed for a duck as the visitors were 4/2 in the second over. Babar Azam (26) and Shan Massod (35) then tried to steady the ship but Mitchell Marsh and Pat Cummins had them at their mercy.

With Pakistan struggling at 47/4 and then 96/5, the visitors slowly found their way back into the match with Rizwan and Agha Salman (53). The pair stitched a partnership of 94 runs for the sixth wicket. Rizwan was later picked by Cummins, but Agha continued to hold one end.

Agha was later supported by Jamal as they helped the side reach 300 on a batting-friendly wicket at the SCG. Sajid Khan (15), returning to the side for the first time since 2022, also played a handy role as Pakistan crossed 300. Jamal’s impressive innings was brought to an end by spinner Nathan Lyon as Pakistan were bowled out for 313 in 77.1 overs.

Cummins got the lion's share of wickets with five, while Starc ended with 75/2. There was a wicket each for Lyon, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh.

To end the day, Australia came out to bat for one over with local boy David Warner getting a hero’s reception from the fans. He scored a four before Stumps were called on Day 1 as Australia will head into the second day with 6/0. All eyes will be on Warner on Thursday as he tries to join a unique club by scoring a hundred in a farewell Test match.

He scored a four before Stumps were called on Day 1 as Australia will head into the second day with 6/0. All eyes will be on Warner on Thursday as he tries to join a unique club by scoring a hundred in a farewell Test match.

AUS vs PAK, 3rd Test: Rizwan, Jamal rescue Pakistan after poor start on opening day of SCG contest

Pakistan director of cricket Mohammad Hafeez said that there was not enough conclusive evidence to turn the on-field not out decision of Mohammad Rizwan on day 4 of second Test against Australia. Pakistan were in commanding position at that time with 98 runs required to win and five wickets in hand.

Once Rizwan was dismissed, Pakistan suffered a collapse and lost rest of the wickets for just 18 runs and lost the Test by 79 runs as Australia took an unassailable lead of 2-0 in three-match series.

"I spoke to [Rizwan] and he's a very honest person. He said he did not even feel that it touched anywhere near the gloves. And what we saw, there should be conclusive evidence to reverse the decision of the umpire. That's what I know. The umpire gave it not out and there was no conclusive kind of evidence where the decision has to be turned over," said Hafeez at the post-match conference.

Hafeez though agreed that Pakistan made some mistakes in the game, he was of opinion that it was inconsistent umpiring and technology curse that cost them the game.

"We made some mistakes as a team, we will take that, we will address those things, but at the same time I believe inconsistent umpiring and technology curse [has] really given us the result which should have been different," he said.

"Technology, I'm in favour of that, but [only] if it's giving you benefit," Hafeez said. "But if it's bringing some doubts and bringing some curse into the game, it should not be accepted by anyone."

"Sometimes the technology brings some decisions which obviously, as a human we don't understand."

"The ball hitting the stump is always out. Why is it umpire's call? I never understand that. So I think there are a lot of areas that need to be addressed for the betterment of cricket in general. I think technology is something that is taking away from the instinct of the game."

The final match of the series will be played from January 3, 3024 in Sydney.

‘Wasn’t enough evidence to give Rizwan out,’ says Pak director of cricket Hafeez after loss vs AUS in 2nd Test

Pakistan has replaced wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed with Mohammad Rizwan for the Boxing Day Test against Australia. The decision comes after Sarfaraz's poor run in the first Test in Perth where he managed just seven runs across two innings as Pak lost by 360 runs.

Sarfaraz, who saw a bit of renewal of his red-ball career after brilliant knocks against New Zealand earlier this year, albeit at home, was visibly uncomfortable against the pace in Perth. His selection raised a few eyes but Pak's newly appointed skipper Shan Masood defended the selection.

"I wouldn't think that that one change would have changed the whole course of the game," Masood said at the press conference ahead of the Boxing Day Test. "The reason to play Sarfaraz was pretty much the same [as the reason to play Aamer Jamal and Khurram Shahzad]. People go back to stats and Rizwan averages very well in SENA. We know what Rizwan has done but we gave Sarfaraz the benefit because he averaged 56.50 on his last tour here in 2016."

"Rizwan just came from the World Cup, a lot of white-ball cricket. And he also had a gap in red-ball cricket since Sarfaraz took over from him for the New Zealand series. Sarfaraz had an outstanding performance there and Rizwan hadn't played a lot of red-ball cricket. So there was a method to it. He's been there, he played red-ball cricket. Karachi had a very good season where he was the tournament's MVP, and that allowed us to get a player like Rizwan into shape. If I had it my way, I'd ideally like both to play but that's not possible. Now we think Rizwan is ready and we can give Saifi that little bit of break to recuperate and come back," he added.

Pakistan have already been marred by multiple injuries as they look to equal the Test series.

Days after Pakistan batter Azam Khan was fined 50 per cent of his match fee for displaying the Palestinian flag on his bat, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a U-turn on its decision.

PCB on Tuesday (Nov 28) released a statement saying it had reviewed the matter and decided to waive the penalty imposed by the match officials.

"Azam Khan's 50 per cent fine imposed by match officials has been reviewed and waived off by the Pakistan Cricket Board," PCB said in a release.

It was during the National T20 Cup 2023-24 match between Karachi Whites and Lahore Blues at the National Stadium in Karachi on Sunday (Nov 26) that Azam was reprimanded for his actions.

Playing for the Whites, the wicketkeeper-batter came out to the crease with his bat sporting a Palestinian flag on the bottom of the spine. It was presumably a way for Azam to show solidarity with the Palestinians who are currently the collateral damage in the Israel-Hamas war.

The message, however, did not go down well with the match officials as he was found guilty of committing a level-I offence. He violated Article 2.4 of the PCB Code of Conduct For Players and Players Support Personnel for repeated failure to comply with the instruction or directive of an umpire during a match.

According to Geo News, Azam had the same sticker depicting the Palestine flag on his bat in the previous two games of the National T20 Cup. However, no one had warned him before Sunday's game when the picture of his bat went viral on social media.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam has already faced enough wrath for his approach and inability to convert his starts into match-winning performances in this ODI World Cup 2023. Although Pakistan remains in the race for the semis, Babar’s performance, despite several fifties, have put him under the radar. Former T20 World Cup winner Abdul Razzaq compared Babar with India skipper Rohit Sharma, saying the Pakistan captain lacks that class.

While Rohit is in the top five run-getters thus far, having hit two fifties and a hundred, Babar is not even in the top 15, despite crossing the fifty-run mark four times. Even against New Zealand in Bengaluru, he scored run-a-ball 66, while Fakhar Zaman’s unbeaten 126 off 81 balls helped Pakistan stay ahead on DLS score, which saw them winning by 20 runs.

Razzaq said Babar could be the ranked number one ODI batter, but he doesn’t play like one, failing to convert his starts into match-winning performances and that has affected Pakistan’s performance in this edition.

“No 1 batter is Fakhar Zaman. All New Zealand batters were praising him. Our captain doesn’t have that class. Look at Rohit; he is ready to score 10 runs in the first over and then 15 in the second. Our captain has a different playing style, but he should see what Rohit is doing."

“World-class players are the ones who take the game away from the opposition. In our time, it was Matthew Hayden, Sanath Jayasuriya, Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting,” the former Pakistan all-rounder added.

Razzaq lauds Kohli, Rohit for Team India’s success

In the lead-up to this World Cup, Pakistan was regarded as one of the favourites to reach the semis; however, considering their standings (on the points table) and performances, the Men in Green have looked far from convincing.

Razzaq noted how Virat and Rohit’s performance has pushed the morale in the Indian dressing room and helped them win all eight contested matches thus far.

“They are playing for their nation. Look at Virat Kohli’s reaction when other batters hit the runs, he celebrates like he has scored."

“Bowlers are attacking, batters are attacking. Two months ago, Pakistan bowlers were attacking, and that’s why we were doing so well. We called them the World's No 1 attack. The same unit is not taking wickets, now we are questioning our bowlers, it happens in cricket. I will give this credit to Rohit Sharma for his team unity and with the confidence they are playing,” Razzaq said.

Meanwhile, Pakistan need to beat England in their last league game to make it to the top four and expect a few other results to fall in their favour, whereas, India and South Africa are two teams that have sealed their semis berths.

From poor fitness and fielding to PCB chaos: Decoding Pakistan's dismal run in ODI World Cup

India have been on a roll in the ongoing home ODI World Cup. After six games, they remain the only unbeaten team with a win in each outing and are sitting at the top of the points table of the ten-team competition. Batters and bowlers have been very clinical whereas they have been delivering as a fielding unit as well.

While captain Rohit Sharma remains India's highest run-getter (398) -- fourth-most overall -- Virat Kohli is also not behind. Kohli is at the sixth spot in terms of most runs in the tournament (354 runs, including a ton) and is one century away from equalling Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar's ODI tally (49 -- most-ever). Thus, Indian fans are eagerly waiting for him to score his 49th and also register his 50th ton during the mega event.

Ahead of Pakistan's clash versus Bangladesh, in match 31 in Kolkata on Tuesday (Oct 31), Mohammed Rizwan expressed hope that Kohli would score his 49th ODI ton on his birthday, when India take on South Africa in Kolkata on Nov 5 (Sunday), and also that the star batter will slam his 50th century during the marquee event.

Rizwan said while talking to India Today, "It is nice to know that his birthday is on 5th of November. ODI World Cup: Hope Virat Kohli scores 49th ODI ton on his birthday, says Pakistan's Md Rizwan

Shaheen Afridi, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Mohammed Rizwan are being discussed as potential candidates to replace Babar Azam as Pakistan captain after the national side returns home post the ODI World Cup. There have been a lot of questions on Babar's leadership in the ongoing ten-team tournament with three successive defeats, with the latest coming against Afghanistan in Chennai on Monday (Oct 23).

It is being said that the change in leadership role could take place soon as Pakistan's chances of making it to the semi-finals of the ongoing ODI World Cup look bleak at the moment. The Men in Green are scheduled to tour Australia soon after the World Cup and plans for the 2024 T20 World Cup will be in full swing post the mega event in India. Thus, a new captain can be appointed sooner than later.

What are Babar's chances of staying captain?

"Only if Pakistan can stage a miracle and win all their remaining matches to qualify for the semi-finals of this World Cup does Babar stand any chance of surviving as captain and even then he might be relegated to skipper in just the red ball format," one reliable source close to the developments said, as per PTI.

"It is over for Babar because he has been given unbridled power and authority as captain and more importantly he has always had players of his choice in the team. There has never been any attempt to reduce his authority and so he is now being held solely responsible for the Asia Cup and World Cup defeats," the source mentioned.

The source further revealed that despite advice from former captains such as Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammed Hafeez to make some changes to the final World Cup squad, Babar got all the 18 players he wanted and was backed by PCB chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq.

"The PCB Chairman, Zaka Ashraf ignored the advice of Misbah and Hafeez and some other former players whom he consulted as Babar was adamant he didn't want changes in the team for the World Cup," the source said.

Misbah, former captain and coach, also confirmed on a television channel that he had asked Babar to include mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed in the World Cup squad. However, the current skipper only added him as a travelling reserve.

It is to be noted that lobbies for the possible candidates, including Sarfaraz, Shaheen, Rizwan and Shan Masood have already started their work to get their candidate selected. In a likely scenario, the PCB is contemplating different captains for the red and white-ball formats.

"Sarfaraz might win the nod to captain the Test and ODI sides again while Shaheen may get a chance to be the T20 captain," the source added. Sarfaraz is not part of the Babar-led ODI World Cup squad.

Babar was appointed T20I captain in late 2019 but became the all-format skipper by 2021.

Shaheen, Rizwan, Sarfaraz in line to replace Babar Azam as Pakistan captain post ODI WC: Report

A complaint has been filed against star Pakistan keeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan for offering prayers (namaz) on the cricket field during the game against the Netherlands in World Cup 2023. Vineet Jindal, an advocate in the Supreme Court of India, wrote to the ICC, saying Rizwan offering prayers during the match ‘raises questions about the spirit of the game.’

“This is a complaint about Pakistan Cricket Player, Mohammad Rizwan, who was seen offering namaz on the cricket field during his team’s opening match of the ongoing ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 on Friday (Oct 6) against the Netherlands in Hyderabad,” reads the complaint filed by Jindal with the ICC chairman Greg Barclay.

“The act of Mohammad Rizwan when he read namaz on the cricket field amid many Indians is symbolic of the intentional depiction of his religion, which stands against the spirit of the sports,” it added.

“This very act of the player raises questions about the spirit of the match and raises a question of the ideology, the player follows while playing the match. The act of displaying his religion by Mohammed Rizwan purposefully depicts his intent to message that he is a Muslim, defeating the spirit of sports. Rizwan was seen offering prayers amid the field while his teammates were waiting for the drinks during the break,” the complaint read.

Meanwhile, Pakistan have won two and lost one in three matches played in this World Cup so far. They will next face Australia in Bengaluru on Friday (Oct 20).

Pakistan successfully chased the total of 345, the highest in the World Cup's 48-year history, primarily due to Rizwan's century. Speaking after the match, Rizwan said the fans got behind him when he was struggling with the cramps and whenever he hit a boundary.

“I felt like I was playing in front of the Rawalpindi crowd; our ground in Lahore is big, and a lot of people come there. This ground felt like Rawalpindi,” said Rizwan.

“The way the crowd showed love today, and not just for me but for the whole Pakistan team, and they even supported Sri Lanka. I am happy that the crowd in Hyderabad has supported cricket, both Sri Lanka and us. I had a lot of fun with them," he added.

More than 1,000 Israelis have been killed after Hamas - a terror outfit operating from the Gaza Strip - launched an ambush attack on Israel on Saturday (Oct 7).

A spectacular intelligence failure meant that thousands of crude missiles and rockets were fired that overwhelmed Israel's state-of-the-art Iron Dome missile defence system. Simultaneously, a group of ground fighters of Hamas illegally entered Israel and kidnapped, raped and slaughtered civilians, before retreating.
