Two police officers, firefighter killed as authorities respond to ‘call of a family in danger’ in Minnesota

In a dramatic rescue operation on Friday (Dec 29) evening, a total of 122 anglers found themselves stranded on an ice floe that had detached from the main ice sheet on Upper Red Lake in northern Minnesota. The incident occurred about 30 feet from the shore, prompting a swift response from the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the ordeal.

According to the sheriff’s office, the fishermen were unable to return to dry land after the ice floe broke loose.

Emergency responders were alerted just before 5 pm CT. Bystanders attempted a makeshift rescue using a canoe, resulting in four individuals falling into the water.

However, they were quickly rescued.

The first four fishermen were successfully rescued around 6:40 pm CT, and by 7:37 pm, all 122 individuals had been safely brought back to the mainland, as reported in a Facebook post by the sheriff’s office.

Chris Mueller, the public information officer for the sheriff’s office, commended the response, stating, “Our first responders have had a lot of practice this year, and it is quite impressive we evacuated 122 people in less than 3 hours from the first call in a rural area of the county.”

The incident has brought the spotlight on the precarious ice conditions in the region, with the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources cautioning the public.

Minnesota has unveiled a new state flag design, marking the end of a competition initiated to address concerns about the current flag's perceived offensiveness to Native Americans.

The winning design, submitted by 24-year-old artist and writer Andrew Prekker from Luverne, departs significantly from the existing flag, which has been described by a lawmakers as a "cluttered genocidal mess".

The first day of the fifth month of 2023 should have been normal for a Minnesota lawmaker, but the technology had to intervene and make him viral for reasons he won't like.

Minnesota's Office of the Legislative Auditor was to hold a vote as the members met virtually, but little did State Senator Calvin Bahr know about the faux pas that technology could lead to as he briefly appeared on screen topless.&nbsp;

In the small clip of the virtual meeting on Zoom, viral on social media platforms, Bahr of East Bethel can briefly be seen voting with the Legislative Audit Commission. In the call, a School House Rock "I'm Just a Bill" character was seen on the wall behind him.&nbsp;

After the voting, he quickly turned the camera off and left the black screen, which kept showing his name.&nbsp;

Officers from the Starbuck Police Department and Pope County Sheriff's Officer answered calls from a residential address in Cyrus.&nbsp;

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident that has left three officers injured, including one fatally.

While at the scene, one officer from the Starbuck police and two deputies from the sheriff's office were injured in the gunfire, according to the post. One of the injured deputies was hospitalised and later succumbed to the injuries. The other&nbsp;deputy was released after being treated, while the officer didn't need to be hospitalised.

The Pope County Sheriff’s Office said that the officer&nbsp;responded to a call of a domestic dispute at 7:30 pm. The officer and the two deputies were struck in an exchange of gunfire, which also led to the suspect being killed.

Police confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public. A press conference has been scheduled for 1 pm on Sunday.&nbsp;

"We are heartbroken about tonight's incident in Cyrus. This is a tragic reminder of the dangers that our public safety professionals face protecting our communities," a joint statement by representatives Paul Anderson, of Starbuck, and Mary Franson, of Alexandria, said.

"Please join us in praying for the families of the officers, the community of Cyrus, the Starbuck Police Department, and the Pope County Sheriff's Office."

The incident happened on the night of 29 October 2021. Pilots with Delta Air Lines reported to the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) that they had just been struck by a laser.

Everything was business as usual until the cockpit was lit up three times by a blue laser. The aircraft which was on its way to MSP airport was instructed by air traffic control to change runways. However, the pilots could not look at this brief on their iPads as the laser strikes carried out by Link resulted in causing a major distraction to the pilots in the cockpit.&nbsp;

Link pleaded guilty to this charge on January 12, 2023, as US District Judge William M. Conley announced his judgement of sentencing him to prison for two years.&nbsp;

The laser strikes did not lead to any untoward incident and the pilots were able to brief, make a transition to the new runway and safely land the aircraft, said the statement by the attorney's office.&nbsp;

Even though the first officer did not suffer any disruption to his vision, but the captain reportedly said that vision in his right eye was affected for several hours after this event.

Following the laser strikes, air traffic control rang up Minnesota State Patrol aircraft. The patrol aircraft then flew to River Falls to investigate into the matter.&nbsp;

Five suspects arrested for death of 19-year-old in shooting at Minnesota’s Mall of America

A 19-year-old male&nbsp;was killed in a shooting at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota on Friday night, police said. The shooting happened around 8 pm, two days before Christmas, amid a busy shopping day, said police.&nbsp;Cops have described the victim as a 19-year-old African American male. Reports say that the bullet hit him directly, and he died at the scene of the shooting.

The altercation, which took place between two groups of between five and nine people, was&nbsp; recorded by the security cameras in the mall. During the tussle, a male suddenly pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at the victim.

During the tussle, a male suddenly pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at the victim. Officials of the Bloomington Police Department confirmed that CCTV footage shows the shooting spiralled from a quarrel between two groups of men. During a press conference two hours after the shooting, Booker Hodges, Bloomington Police Chief, asked the suspects responsible for the shooting to turn themselves in. However, for a&nbsp;Minnesota nonagenarian, celebrating her 91st birthday in such a manner was a strict no-no.

Ida Shannon, who turns 91 years old&nbsp;later this month, ditched the ordinary and went skydiving last Sunday to celebrate her life milestone.

"Life would be pretty dull if you didn't embrace adventures.&nbsp;I like taking risks. I think I was born that way," she said.&nbsp;

Ida, who had celebrated her 80th birthday&nbsp;by going zip-lining, had always dreamt of going skydiving as her next adventure.

"Someone asked me what I was going to do next, and without even thinking about it, I said, 'Oh, I'll just go skydiving,'" said Ida in an interview to CBS.&nbsp;

To make Shannon's dream come true, the members of her church stepped up and started to make the arrangement.

The church members collected money amongst themselves and managed to send Shannon aboard a plane so that she could jump thousands of feet down and make her dream a reality.&nbsp;

Ahead of the jump, Ida noted that it was going to be scary initially but she wanted to enjoy the experience.&nbsp;

"The first minute or two is going to be kind of scary because you have to wait for the parachute to open. But after that, I exepcted to be able to leap down on god's earth and enjoy what god has created," added Ida.&nbsp;

Daisy May, one of Ida's friends and a member of the church referred to her as real-life wonder woman.&nbsp;"She's like the real Wonder Woman. She's strong and loves people. We are family. She is like the grandmother I wish I had."&nbsp;

Ida not only went aboard the plane but she also managed to complete the dive and make it back safe. Later, she clicked&nbsp;pictures with her friends and family.&nbsp;

The Renville County authorities said that the discovery was made last summer, and the county sheriff Scott Hable sent it to the medical examiners in order to determine whether it was related to a missing persons case.

However, the answer that the county office received was beyond their wildest imaginations. The report said that the skull belonged to a young man who died between 5500 and 6000 B.C.

“That it was human, it was that of a young man, and, most surprisingly, that it was, they thought, about 8,000 years old. It was a complete shock to us that that bone was that old,” Hable said.

Hable further added that the man ‘likely ate a marine diet including maize and sorghum’ and there was an injury on the recovered skull which was “perhaps suggestive of the cause of death.”

However, the police were criticised for posting pictures of the skull online. “We had no idea but we were alerted to the fact that that Facebook post was offensive to one or more people and so we have since taken that post down. We didn’t mean for it to be offensive whatsoever,” Hable said.

The remains are likely to belong to the tribal communities residing in Minnesota and the state archaeologists said that they will be turning the remains over to Upper Sioux Community tribal officials.
