Viola Davis to play Michelle Obama in new TV series 'First Ladies'

The former first lady Michelle Obama hits out at US President Donald Trump over his comments on four Congresswomen. Michelle Obama tweets, "What truly makes our country great is its diversity. I’ve seen that beauty in so many ways over the years. Whether we are born here or seek refuge here, there’s a place for us all. We must remember it’s not my America or your America. It’s our America."

Teenage sensation Coco Gauff says she hopes that one thing her adoring fans at Wimbledon have learned about her in the past week is she is a "fighter" and "never gives up".

The 15-year-old's hopes of moving into the quarter-finals were hindered by a stomach complaint in her 6-3, 6-3 loss to Simona Halep in the last 16.

She leaves, though, having turned herself into a media darling, signficantly improved her ranking from 313 and left her mark as a potential Grand Slam winner of the future.

However, even though Gauff, the youngest ever qualifier in the women's singles, who had then dispensed with three opponents including five-time champion Venus Williams, was more subdued following her defeat she still had a spark.

"I hope they (the crowd and her opponents) learned about me that I'm a fighter," she said.

"I'll never give up."

Gauff, who endearingly described herself on Friday as both "goofy and weird", said she hoped she had served as an example to many who were dreaming of making it in tennis.

"I hope they learned from me that, I mean, anything is possible if you work hard, just continue to dream big," she said.

"I mean, like I said, if somebody told me this maybe three weeks ago, I probably wouldn't believe it.

"But I think just putting in the work definitely raised my confidence because I knew how hard I worked and I knew what shots I could make and what was possible."

Gauff, who refused to blame playing seven matches in the past fortnight for her loss, said overall it had been an extraordinary ride.

Barack and Michelle Obama's production company on Tuesday unveiled a wide-ranging slate of programming it will supply to Netflix Inc., including a period drama set in the fashion world and a biopic about Frederick Douglass. Their collaboration was first announced in 2018.

The series, documentaries and films will be released on the streaming service over the next several years, according to a statement from Higher Ground Productions, a company established by the former president and first lady last year.

The slate includes a drama called 'Bloom,' a series set in the post-World War II fashion world in New York City, which explores barriers faced by women and people of colour. It will be written and executive produced by Oscar-winning "Thelma and Louise" screenwriter Callie Khouri.

A series for preschoolers called 'Listen to Your Vegetables & Eat Your Parents' will "take young children and their families around the globe on an adventure that tells us the story of our food," the statement said. During her time as first lady, Michelle Obama advocated for healthy eating habits for children.

Another project is a non-fiction series based on the Michael Lewis book 'The Fifth Risk: Undoing Democracy' about "the unheralded work done by everyday heroes guiding our government and safeguarding our nation." The Lewis book was critical of the US administration's transition from Obama to US President Donald Trump.

The company also is adapting Pulitzer Prize-winning book 'Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom' by David W. Blight about the celebrated abolitionist.

"We believe each of these productions won't just entertain, but will educate, connect and inspire us all," Obama said in the statement.

As the UK takes center stage with the impending Brexit looming large, the world sees a very determined Theresa May shuttling between Brussels and London, dismissing her naysayers, fighting hard to avoid a ‘no-deal Brexit’. And every time she rises to make a speech in the parliament she exudes grit and determination. She is a fighter and it is out there for the world to see.

Yet, people can't seem to get past staring at Theresa May's leopard print shoes, her pencil skirts or her statement neck pieces.

Clothes are excellent means of self-expression for people, gender irrespective. Clothes, shoes, accessories go a long way in sending intended messages across without actually speaking out loud. We often let our clothes do the talking when it comes to leaving a strong impact.

Who would know that better than our women leaders whose every move is under the constant public scanner?

And it is not always easy for the lady bosses who run countries and rule people’s heart with the same panache to live under scrutiny round the clock, more so in an era dominated by social media designed etiquette.

It is sad but true that more often than not fashion choices of our powerhouse woman politicians go on to make bigger headlines than the job they passionately work at.

UK's Theresa May could tell you how tough it is to be a ruling PM who likes to keep it fashionable.

When it comes to fashion, women in politics “are held to a different standard across the board” than men, said Senator Moseley Braun, who represented Illinois, in the US Senate from 1993 to 1999.

Sadly, the sentiment hasn’t changed much since Moseley was in office.

This obsession with what the powerful women of the world wear is not a recent phenomenon. Republican Katherine Langley, who represented Kentucky back in the 1920s and early 1930s was a victim too. “She offends the squeamish by her unstinted display of gipsy colours on the floor and the conspicuousness with which she dresses her bushy blue-black hair,” a reporter had written.

Why should politicians who talk openly and positively about fashion be judged?

PM May has admitted that footwears are her “greatest love”. "I like clothes and I like shoes," she told the crowd at the 2015 Women in the World summit.

Media has always been too eager to pick on her. BBC had once while reporting Brexit focussed primarily on PM May’s shoes. However, thanks to some who wish to look beyond fashion statements, this reportage was rightly and thoroughly criticised. One viewer had pointed out that the shot "sends all the wrong messages, deflects from what she was saying, shows no respect for her position, and reinforces gender stereotypes."

German Chancellor Angela wardrobe choices have prompted "letter-writing” at times. She laments her male colleagues have never had to face similar criticism about their fashion choices. In a candid interview to Die Zeit she attempted to draw the attention to this very sexist glare of the world- "It's no problem at all for a man to wear a dark blue suit for a hundred days in a row, but if I wear the same blazer four times in two weeks, that leads to letter-writing from citizens,"

Hillary Clinton must have by now learnt not to be upset for being criticised for wearing pantsuits. Remember Project Runway’s Tim Gunn who back in 2011 had said shamelessly exclaimed, “Why must she dress that way? I think she’s confused about her gender.”

PM May herself offered to break the myth that working women of substance cannot have a nose for fashion when she went on record to say, "One of the challenges for women in the workplace is to be ourselves, and I say you can be clever and like clothes. You can have a career and like clothes.". “I also think it's important to be able to show that a woman can do a job like this and still be interested in clothes," she rightly claimed.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the newly sworn-in New York City Democrat, who is otherwise a hit among colleagues and media, could not escape unwelcome and distasteful comments on her style.

Washington Examiner's Eddie Scarry tweeted a photograph of AOC as a miss. Alexandria is popularly known as, with the caption, “that jacket and coat don’t look like a girl who struggles.” His tweet was intended to cast doubts on her working-class background, she claims she comes from.

Again, why should it be difficult to fathom that women politicians like other working professionals can be very well put together as they go about their everyday business?

Harsh criticisms have often come UK PM’s way and these were not always because she could not manage to strike a timely Brexit deal with the European Union.

On several occasions, she found herself in the eye of a storm for something as regular as the choice of the colour of her dress or the slit of her skirt. When Theresa May stepped out for the Pride of Britain Awards in an attire that stopped above the knee, netizens called her out. "Put your knees away," one Twitter user wrote.

When Melania Trump wore a pith helmet during a trip to Africa in July 2018 she managed to draw a lot of flak. An understandably angry Trump told reporters, “I wish people would focus on what I do, not what I wear.”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's low-cut dress at an opera event in Oslo in 2008 caused quite a stir in the media. Die Welt’s headline read "How much cleavage should a chancellor show?" Internet never forgets to keep a count of the number of times an attire was repeated by the Chancellor and is quick to point out how she had worn the “dark blue dress to an annual music event in 2012 as she did in 2008”

Former US first lady Michelle Obama could have moved out of the White House in 2016 but by no means has people’s interest in her fashion choices diminished. Her style has often surpassed her work in the race to make headlines. Obama wrote in her memoir how a reporter had shown more interest in who designed her dress than her speaking engagement. To keep up the fashion pace felt like a task. “Optics governed more or less everything in the political world, and I factored this into every outfit," she wrote. "It required time, though, and money – more money that I’d spent on clothing ever before."

Fortunately for us womankind these women have never let the cruelty take them down. These are ladies who like to live with no regrets and honestly, there isn’t any reason why they should.

Merkel said. "You can only carry out this profession when you aren't affected by things so quickly. You have to concentrate on the objective tasks."

"I have no regrets [about being famous for my shoes]," PM May once told a journalist. Politicians are like any other people and “not some different species”, she said sending out a message that she is approachable.

May is painfully aware that she will have to make peace with people judging her endlessly but she refuses to kill the fun. "Look, throughout my political career, people have commented on what I wear. That's just something that happens, and you accept that. But it doesn't stop me from going out and enjoying fashion."

One viewer had pointed out that the shot "sends all the wrong messages, deflects from what she was saying, shows no respect for her position, and reinforces gender stereotypes." German Chancellor Angela wardrobe choices have prompted "letter-writing” at times. She laments her male colleagues have never had to face similar criticism about their fashion choices. In a candid interview to Die Zeit she attempted to draw the attention to this very sexist glare of the world- "It's no problem at all for a man to wear a dark blue suit for a hundred days in a row, but if I wear the same blazer four times in two weeks, that leads to letter-writing from citizens," Hillary Clinton must have by now learnt not to be upset for being criticised for wearing pantsuits. Remember Project Runway’s Tim Gunn who back in 2011 had said shamelessly exclaimed, “Why must she dress that way? I think she’s confused about her gender.” PM May herself offered to break the myth that working women of substance cannot have a nose for fashion when she went on record to say, "One of the challenges for women in the workplace is to be ourselves, and I say you can be clever and like clothes. An understandably angry Trump told reporters, “I wish people would focus on what I do, not what I wear.” German Chancellor Angela Merkel's low-cut dress at an opera event in Oslo in 2008 caused quite a stir in the media. Die Welt’s headline read "How much cleavage should a chancellor show?" Internet never forgets to keep a count of the number of times an attire was repeated by the Chancellor and is quick to point out how she had worn the “dark blue dress to an annual music event in 2012 as she did in 2008” Former US first lady Michelle Obama could have moved out of the White House in 2016 but by no means has people’s interest in her fashion choices diminished. "It required time, though, and money – more money that I’d spent on clothing ever before." Fortunately for us womankind these women have never let the cruelty take them down. These are ladies who like to live with no regrets and honestly, there isn’t any reason why they should. Merkel said. "You can only carry out this profession when you aren't affected by things so quickly. You have to concentrate on the objective tasks." "I have no regrets [about being famous for my shoes]," PM May once told a journalist. But it doesn't stop me from going out and enjoying fashion." Why should Theresa May, Angela Merkel, Michelle Obama be judged for what they wear?

Grammys 2019: Lady Gaga, Childish Gambino win big; Michelle Obama makes surprise appearance

Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance on the Grammys stage Sunday to deliver a message of women's empowerment alongside superstars Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, host Alicia Keys and actress Jada Pinkett-Smith.

"Music shows us that all of it matters -- every story within every voice, every note within every song," said the former first lady, looking glam in a sparkling gunmetal pantsuit with a 1970s-esque wrap jacket.

"Is that right, ladies?" she said to resounding applause.

The Recording Academy behind the awards gala has faced a barrage of criticism for not embracing diversity within its ranks, after nearly muting women nominees at the show last year.

This year, five of the eight nominees for Album of the Year are women: rapper Cardi B, folk-rock singer Brandi Carlile, pop futurist Janelle Monae, R&B prodigy H.E.R. and country star Kacey Musgraves.

Former President Barack obama, Michelle tops most admired in America list; Trump at 2nd

Awkward handshakes, folded arms and a forward stare.

President Donald Trump joined the group of living ex-US presidents on Wednesday to commemorate the life of former President George H W Bush, but in a service characterised by emotion and good feeling, warmth between the current and former occupants of the White House was decidedly absent.

Trump shook hands awkwardly with his predecessor, Barack Obama, and former first lady Michelle Obama as he took his place in the front row of the service at the Washington National Cathedral.

He did not reach out to former President Bill Clinton or former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who were seated next to the Obamas. Hillary Clinton, who lost to Trump in the 2016 presidential election, nodded but did not smile as the one-time New York businessman and his wife, Melania, joined the group that included former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn.

Trump then proceeded to sit through the service, often with his arms folded over his chest and his eyes fixed in an intense stare ahead.

The fact that he came, however, and was welcomed by the Bush family, with whom he also has sparred, provided a glimpse of bipartisanship and political civility that many feel are lacking since Trump took office in January 2017.

The president did not attend a service that was similar in scale at the cathedral for Republican Senator John McCain, who died earlier this year, and had to be talked into keeping the American flag at half-staff over the White House.

Trump and McCain had feuded repeatedly and at his service, the senator's daughter Meghan McCain rebuked Trump in an emotional speech.

For Bush, Trump declared a day of mourning. He visited the 41st president's casket as it lay in state in the US Capitol and later called on former President George W Bush and his wife, Laura, while they were in Washington.

Still, the bad feeling between Trump and his predecessors appeared hard to set aside.

Trump has sharply criticised Obama and worked to roll back signature achievements of the Democrat's White House tenure on healthcare, climate change and foreign policy.

Michelle Obama, who recently published a memoir, wrote about not being able to forgive Trump for his leading role in the "birther" movement that questioned whether her husband was born in the United States. Barack Obama was born in Hawaii.

Trump's behaviour contrasted with that of his presidential counterparts. The Clintons chatted amiably with the Obamas before the current president arrived. The two former first ladies exchanged a long hug on seeing each other and clasped hands at the end of the service when they parted.

George W Bush shook hands with the full front row of presidents and their spouses, and in a replay of a scene that went viral during McCain's funeral, handed something to Michelle Obama, presumably candy.

The 43rd president, in his eulogy, also hailed his father's friendship with Bill Clinton, who vanquished the elder Bush in the 1992 election. That kind of friendship is unlikely, at least for now, to materialise with the 45th president.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, a longtime friend of the late Bush, spoke at the ceremony and said when he was president, "every single head of government in the world knew that they were dealing with a gentleman, a genuine leader, one who was distinguished, resolute and brave."

Watch: Michelle Obama in heart to heart with Oprah Winfrey

Michelle Obama has denounced US President Donald Trump's "birther" campaign which questioned her husband and former US President Barack Obama, calling it bigoted and dangeous.

In her memoir "Becoming", set to come out on Tuesday, Michelle has blasted Trump writing how she reacted in shock the night she learned he would replace her husband in the Oval Office and tried to "block it all out".

According to the Associated Press, Michelle has expressed disbelief in her memoir over how so many women would choose a "misogynist" over Hillary Clinton, "an exceptionally qualified female candidate". She remembers in the book how her body "buzzed with fury" after seeing the infamous "Access Hollywood" tape, in which Trump brags about sexually assaulting women.

In "Becoming", Obama has shared both pain and joy. She has written lovingly of her family and given a detailed account of her courtship with her future husband, whom she met when both were at the Chicago law firm Sidley Austin LLP; she was initially his adviser.

The former US first lady is about to embark on a book tour titled 'Becoming: An intimate conversation with Michelle Obama'. Reflecting on her memoir, Michelle will chronicle the experiences that have shaped her life, from her childhood on the south side of Chicago to her time spent at the White House.

In the meanwhile, Michelle's UK fans were left disappointed after tickets to her book talk quickly sold out. They have emerged on secondary ticketing sites priced $13,000 each or Rs 9.5 lakh.

More than 60,000 people rushed to buy the tickets although the London venue can seat just 2700 people.

Widely praised as a gifted orator and communicator, Michelle Obama has long said she has no interest in running for office, although she held a few campaign-style rallies before the midterms urging people to register to vote. The rallies were part of her work as co-chairman of the nonpartisan, non-profit organization When We All Vote.

Last year, she launched a programme to help empower girls worldwide through education. The Global Girls Alliance aims to support more than 1,500 grassroots organizations combating the challenges girls encounter in their communities.

WION Dispatch: Michelle Obama blasts Donald Trump in her new memoir

With #MeToo movement burgeoning into the global platform, former first lady of the USA, Michelle Obama, has launched 'Global Girls Alliance' with an aim to improve education for women and girls in the society.

Voicing her opinion on the #MeToo movement and taking a toll on 'patriarchal society ' where we live in, she says, "That`s what happens with change. Change is not a direct smooth path. There`s going to be bumps and resistance. There has been a status quo in terms of the way women have been treated, what their expectations have been in a society and that is changing and there`s going to be a little upheaval. There`s going to be a little discomfort, but I think it`s up to the women out there to say, `Sorry that you feel uncomfortable, but I`m now paving the way for the next generation.`"

"I`m surprised at how much has changed, but how much has not changed and I think that`s where the fire is coming from," she said.

She also comments that the world has turned ''dangerous'' for 'women' and adds, "Enough is enough. The world is sadly a dangerous place for women and girls and we see that again and again and I think young women are tired of it. They`re tired of being undervalued. They`re tired of being disregarded. They`re tired of their voices not being invested in and heard and it`s not just around the world, that`s happening right here in this country and if we`re going to change that, we have to give them the tools and the skills through education to be able to lift those voices up."

Initially, this week even the current first lady Melania Trump had commented on #MeToo movement and said,"You cannot just say to somebody `Oh I was sexually assaulted, or you did that to me,` because sometimes the media goes too far. The way they portray some stories; it`s not correct, it`s not right.''

With #MeToo movement burgeoning into the global platform, former first lady of the USA, Michelle Obama, has launched 'Global Girls Alliance' with an aim to improve education for women and girls in the society.

According to Reuters, the deal suggests a wider post-White House public role for the Obamas than is typical.

"One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience," Barack Obama said in a statement.

Barack and Michelle Obama to produce movies, series with Netflix

Former first lady Barbara Bush was remembered on Saturday as a sharp-tongued but caring figure whose devotion to her family was matched only by her commitment to public service.

Four former US&nbsppresidents were among some 1,500 mourners who gathered at a Houston church for her funeral, after the matriarch of one of the country's most prominent political dynasties died on Tuesday at age 92.

Bush, the wife of the 41st president of the United States, George HW&nbspBush, and the mother of the 43rd, George W&nbspBush, was lauded at a televised but invitation-only service at St Martin's Episcopal Church, where she and her family have been members since the 1950s.&nbsp

"She was candid and comforting, steadfast and straightforward, honest and loving," said the historian and author Jon Meacham, who wrote a biography of George HW&nbspBush and was one of three eulogists whom Barbara Bush herself selected before her death.

"Barbara Bush and George Bush put country above party, the common good above political gain and service to others above the settling of scores," he said.

Former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, current first lady Melania Trump, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former first lady Michelle Obama were all on hand for the service.

President Donald Trump, who clashed with the Bush family during his 2016 campaign, did not travel to Houston. The White House said this week he wanted to avoid disrupting the service with added security.

In a Twitter post, Trump said his "thoughts and prayers are with the entire Bush family."

Former President Jimmy Carter was overseas and unable to attend.

Another of Bush's sons, former Florida governor and 2016 presidential candidate Jeb Bush, also delivered a eulogy, as did her longtime friend Susan Baker, the wife of former Secretary of State James Baker.

In their remarks, Meacham and Baker emphasized Bush's role as a mother and grandmother, with Baker describing her as a "tough but loving enforcer" whose 73-year marriage to her husband was a real-life fairy tale.

Hours before the service`s scheduled start at 11 am&nbsplocal time (1600 GMT), security was tight, with bomb-sniffing dogs checking media equipment and police officers searching bags.

Guests arrived at a different church several miles away to be bussed to the venue, walking past a throng of media.

Bush made it possible for her husband to have "the arc of his life," said Karl Rove, who served as a chief political adviser for George W&nbspBush and spoke with him a few days ago.

"This is a family of great faith, of great conviction," Rove said. "He has every comfort, every confidence of where his mother is."

Following Saturday`s service, Bush will be buried on the grounds of the George HW&nbspBush Library and Museum at Texas A&M University in College Station, next to her daughter, Robin, who died of leukemia at the age of 3. The motorcade carrying her body will traverse both

George Bush Drive and Barbara Bush Drive on its way to the burial site.

Members of the public paid their respects on Friday when Bush lay in repose at the church. The 93-year-old George HW&nbspBush, seated in a wheelchair in front of the casket, greeted mourners in turn with a handshake.

She would be representing India in the summit titled 'Gandhi Going Global', which is a two-year initiative to spread Gandhian philosophy through interactive activities, educational programmes, motivational talks and cultural events which would be held in New Jersey on August 18 and 19.

Kangana told agencies that she has been reading a lot of books on Mahatma Gandhi while growing up and had praised him for being one of the greatest minds ever. She further added saying, “He was a sensible, intelligent man which is not very common,”

And how does she feel to share the stage with Oprah and Michelle Obama? “For me, it’s always been about the impact you make on society and how you contribute to it. Sharing the stage with Michelle and Oprah will be inspiring. I’ve never been anybody’s fan but I admire and idolize women like Oprah. Once I get back to Mumbai, I will know exactly what I will be talking on and for how long, depending on which I will prepare my speech,”

She will be seen in her soon-to-release period drama, Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi which incidentally promotes khadi and shows the Jhansi Ki Rani weaving it on a charkha. “I will resume shooting for Manikarnika from April 6 for seven-eight days of patchwork,”

For now, Kangana Ranaut is chilling at her eight-bedroom Manali bungalow with a picturesque view of the Himalayas. “I love being in the hills and there is something about this place that makes you fall in love with it. Maybe it’s the serenity that feels so surreal. I sent my sister Rangoli a video recently with a self-written quote that stated that time doesn’t roll in space here, it gently caresses her, then kisses and makes love to her,” says Kangana who is enjoying her break from the city and the glam world.

Kangana Ranaut would be seen speaking at a Summit in New Jersey on Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy

Kangana is all ready to attend a summit which is to be held in New Jersey. The actress will be rubbing shoulders with many dignitaries including former First Lady of US Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey. This is BIG! #KanganaRanaut @michelleobama & @oprah will share stage at the #GandhiGoingGlobal event at #NewJersey, USA in August. Talk about a power stage? This could be the most powerful, inspiring & amazing one for decades. Can't wait! #representingIndia #UnitedStates #Queen #Newsoftheday #inspiringwomen #bollywood #celebrity #oprah #michelleobama A post shared by Kangana Ranaut (@team_kangana_ranaut) on Mar 30, 2018 at 9:34pm PDT × She would be representing India in the summit titled 'Gandhi Going Global', which is a two-year initiative to spread Gandhian philosophy through interactive activities, educational programmes, motivational talks and cultural events which would be held in New Jersey on August 18 and 19. Kangana told agencies that she has been reading a lot of books on Mahatma Gandhi while growing up and had praised him for being one of the greatest minds ever. She further added saying, “He was a sensible, intelligent man which is not very common,” And how does she feel to share the stage with Oprah and Michelle Obama? “For me, it’s always been about the impact you make on society and how you contribute to it. Sharing the stage with Michelle and Oprah will be inspiring. I’ve never been anybody’s fan but I admire and idolize women like Oprah. Once I get back to Mumbai, I will know exactly what I will be talking on and for how long, depending on which I will prepare my speech,” She will be seen in her soon-to-release period drama, Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi which incidentally promotes khadi and shows the Jhansi Ki Rani weaving it on a charkha. “I will resume shooting for Manikarnika from April 6 for seven-eight days of patchwork,” For now, Kangana Ranaut is chilling at her eight-bedroom Manali bungalow with a picturesque view of the Himalayas. Two-year-old Parker Curry's life changed with just a single photo -- of her in simple awe of Michelle Obama's portrait at the National Portrait Gallery.

Little did Parker know that her visit to the Gallery would magically make her meet the former First Lady and dance with her.

Last Thursday, Parker went to the Gallery and stood before Michelle Obama's portrait for the longest time. Jaw-dropped, Parker's photo was clicked by a 37-year-old North Carolina resident and posted on Facebook. The photo thus became viral and was picked up by Michelle Obama herself, who then offered to meet Parker.

Not only did they meet and interact, Michelle also danced with the toddler to a funky song.

Parker's mother later said that the toddler thought "she (Michelle Obama) was a queen and she thought rightly so".

After meeting Parker, Michelle shared a photo and video of them dancing. She wrote: "Parker, I'm so glad I had the chance to meet you today (and for the dance party)! Keep on dreaming big for yourself...and maybe one day I'll proudly look up at a portrait of you!"

Michelle Obama's forthcoming memoir, "Becoming," is set for worldwide release on November 13, at which time the former first lady will embark on a global tour to promote the book, publisher Penguin Random House said on Sunday.

The volume fulfills half of the deal the company reached with former US President Barack Obama and his wife the month after he left office calling for the couple to each publish one book, reportedly for a sum worth more than $60 million.

Michelle Obama's book will chronicle her life from a childhood growing up on Chicago's South Side through her years inside the White House as a mother of two and the nation's first African-American first lady, the publisher said.

"Writing 'Becoming' has been a deeply personal experience. It has allowed me, for the very first time, the space to honestly reflect on the unexpected trajectory of my life," the former first lady said in a statement.

"Becoming" is to be published simultaneously in 24 languages around the world and will be released in the United States and Canada through the publisher's Crown Publisher Group, according to Penguin Random House.

Michelle Obama, a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, will also read for the audio edition of the book, the publisher said. Details of a planned international book tour are to be announced at a later date.

The same company also published Barack Obama's three previous books -- "Dreams of My Father," "The Audacity of Hope" and "Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters." His wife's only previous book was a 2012 work on gardening, titled "American Grown," which focused on her initiative to promote organic food and healthy eating.

The 44th US president has yet to schedule his memoir under his latest Penguin Random House deal, a book that would presumably cover his time in the Oval Office.

The publisher has previously said that the Obamas, in keeping with their past practice, planned to donate a significant portion of their proceeds to charity, including the Obama Foundation.

Memoirs by former first ladies usually have sold well, according to the Washington Post, with notable works including Laura Bush's "Spoken from the Heart" and Hillary Clinton's "Living History."

Michelle Obama on 'Black Panther': People will finally see superheroes that look like them

Former U.S. President Barack Obama joked about his ears and gray hair and praised his wife Michelle Obama`s "hotness" at the unveiling of the couple`s official portraits at the Smithsonian`s National Portrait Gallery on Monday.

The Obamas selected artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald for the paintings, which take their place in the National Portrait Gallery`s collection of presidential portraits.

Wiley and Sherald were the first black artists ever commissioned to paint a president or first lady for the Smithsonian.

For Obama`s portrait by Wiley, the former president is depicted sitting in a brown chair with a backdrop of bright green leaves and colourful flowers. Sherald`s painting of Michelle Obama shows her sitting with one hand under her chin and the other draped across her lap, while wearing a long flowing dress decorated with geometric shapes.

Obama, the first African-American U.S. president, complimented Sherald for her portrait of Michelle.

"I want to thank you for so spectacularly capturing the grace and beauty and intelligence and charm and hotness of the woman that I love," Obama said.

He quipped that Wiley, who painted his portrait, was at a disadvantage because his subject was "less becoming."

"I tried to negotiate less gray hair and Kehinde`s artistic integrity would not allow him to do what I asked," Obama said in tongue-in-cheek fashion. "I tried to negotiate smaller ears - struck out on that as well."

New York Times art critic Holland Cotter said while he was impressed by Barack Obama`s unusual depiction, he was disappointed that the focus of Michelle Obama`s portrait appeared to be her dress.

"I was anticipating — hoping for — a bolder, more incisive image of the strong-voiced person I imagine this former first lady to be," Cotter said in his review. Most Twitter posts described the portraits as stunning, although a few criticized them as poorly executed.

"Behold the beauty of Barack and Michelle Obama`s official portrait," tweeted @newyorknewart.

Michelle Obama said she hoped the portrait would have an impact on young girls of colour in the years ahead.

"They will look up and they will see an image of someone who looks like them, hanging on the wall of this great American institution," she said. "I know the kind of impact that will have on their lives, because I was one of those girls."

The Portrait Gallery`s tradition of commissioning presidential portraits began with President George H.W. Bush. Other portraits were acquired as gifts, bought at auctions or through other means.
