What is Meta’s TRIBE v2 AI model?
TRIBE v2 is an AI system designed to interpret patterns in neural activity. It uses machine learning techniques to analyse fMRI scans that record blood flow changes in the brain. These changes reveal which parts of the brain become active when people see images, listen to sounds or read text. According to Meta researchers, participants in the study were exposed to different forms of content such as:ImagesAudio clipsWritten languageThe AI model then analysed how the brain responded to each stimulus. Over time, it learned to predict neural activity patterns linked to different types of information.Meta said the goal is to develop AI systems that better understand how the human brain processes information.
How the model was trained
The system was trained using brain imaging data collected from over 700 volunteers. Functional MRI technology allows researchers to observe brain activity by measuring oxygen levels in different brain regions.By analysing these signals, the AI system identifies relationships between external stimuli and neural responses. According to Meta’s research explanation, the model can predict how certain sensory inputs such as pictures or language may activate specific brain areas.Scientists say this approach helps build computational models that simulate aspects of human cognition.
Why companies are studying the brain
Technology companies are increasingly investing in neuroscience research to improve artificial intelligence. While current AI systems are strong in pattern recognition and data processing, they still struggle with contextual reasoning and flexible understanding areas where the human brain performs far better. By studying neural activity patterns, researchers hope to improve how AI models:Interpret languageUnderstand contextPredict human behaviourLearn from limited informationMeta said the work is part of a broader effort to build AI systems that resemble aspects of human intelligence.
Possible applications in healthcare and neurotechnology
Although the model is still in the research stage, experts say such technology could eventually support several fields.Potential applications include:Brain–computer interfacesAssistive communication toolsResearch into neurological disordersPersonalised medical treatments based on brain responsesFor example, brain-computer interfaces could allow people with speech or motor impairments to communicate using neural signals. However, scientists note that the technology is still far from clinical use.Ethical questions around brain dataResearch combining AI and brain signals also raises important ethical questions.Brain activity data is considered highly sensitive information. Experts warn that strict privacy safeguards will be necessary as the technology develops.Concerns include:Data privacy and consentPotential misuse of neural informationSecurity of brain-signal datasetsAs research continues, policymakers and scientists may need to develop new guidelines governing how neural data can be used.
What this means for AI research
Meta’s TRIBE v2 project shows how AI research is expanding beyond traditional computing tasks. By analysing how the brain reacts to different inputs, scientists hope to create AI systems that process information in more human-like ways.Although the technology is still experimental, it highlights the growing intersection between neuroscience and artificial intelligence. As companies continue investing in this field, future AI systems may become better at understanding language, context and human behaviour areas where machines still lag behind people.

‘AI era opportunity’: Meta launches initiative to support small businesses and expand AI adoption

A Los Angeles jury on Wednesday found Meta and YouTube liable for harming a young woman because of an addictive design of their social media platforms, ordering the companies to pay $6 million in damages, including $3 million in punitive damages. The verdict hands plaintiffs in more than a thousand similar pending cases significant leverage -- and signals to the broader tech industry that juries are prepared to hold social media companies accountable for the mental health toll of their design choices. The jury answered yes to all seven questions on verdict forms for both companies, finding that Meta and YouTube were negligent in the design and operation of their platforms and that their negligence was a substantial factor in causing harm to the plaintiff.Jurors also found that both companies knew or should have known their services posed a danger to minors, that they failed to adequately warn users of that danger, and that a reasonable platform operator would have done so.The panel awarded $3 million in compensatory damages, assigning Meta 70 percent of the responsibility for the plaintiff's harm -- a $2.1 million share -- and YouTube the remaining 30 percent, or $900,000.In a second phase, jurors added a further $3 million in total punitive damages after finding both companies had acted with malice, oppression or fraud. Both companies said they would appeal the verdict."This case misunderstands YouTube, which is a responsibly built streaming platform, not a social media site," Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda said.A spokesperson for Meta said they "respectfully disagree with the verdict," adding that "teen mental health is profoundly complex and cannot be linked to a single app."Nine of the 12 jurors further found that both companies had acted with malice, oppression or fraud, a finding that set the stage for the separate punitive damages. The plaintiff, known in court documents by her initials K.G.M. and called Kaley at trial, began using YouTube when she was six, downloading the app on her iPod Touch to watch videos about lip gloss and an online kids game. She joined Instagram at nine, getting around a block her mother had put in place to keep her off the platform. She told jurors that her near-constant social media use "really affected my self-worth," saying the apps led her to abandon hobbies, struggle to make friends and constantly measure herself against others. In closing arguments, plaintiff attorney Mark Lanier cast the case as a story of corporate greed, saying that features like infinite scrolling, autoplay videos, notifications and like counts were engineered to drive compulsive use among young people.
'Existential' threat?
Meta and YouTube had maintained throughout the trial that Kaley's mental health struggles had nothing to do with their platforms.Meta's lawyer pointed to her life at home and a turbulent relationship with her parents, while YouTube disputed how much time Kaley actually spent on its platform. The jury rejected both defenses across all seven questions on each verdict form.TikTok and Snap were originally named as defendants but settled on undisclosed terms before the trial got underway. Two further bellwether trials are expected to follow in the same Los Angeles courthouse, with their outcomes likely to determine whether social media companies fight on or move toward a broader settlement, potentially including redesigning how their platforms work. The penalty amounts are "a slap on the wrist for companies like Meta and YouTube, which are two of the biggest ad sellers in the world," said Jasmine Enberg of Scalable, who tracks the social media industry."But if these companies are forced to redesign their products, that poses an existential threat to their business models."A separate New Mexico jury on Tuesday found Meta liable for endangering children by making them vulnerable to predators on its platforms and other dangers. The state had sought the maximum $2.2 billion in damages, but the jury awarded a lesser amount of $375 million.Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits for grammar and punctuation. Meta and YouTube found liable in social media addiction trial

In a landmark ruling that could redefine the legal liability of social media giants, a New Mexico jury has ordered Meta Platforms to pay $375 million in civil penalties. On Tuesday (Mar 24), after a six-week trial, the jury found that the tech titan violated state consumer protection laws by misleading parents about the safety of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The verdict marks the first time a jury has held Meta accountable for claims that its platforms enabled child sexual exploitation and prioritised engagement over teen mental health. While Meta has vowed to appeal, the decision signals a major defeat for the company’s long-standing Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act defence. It sets a high-stakes precedent for thousands of similar lawsuits pending across the United States. Also read | No dog left behind: Tiny Corgi leads pack of 7 stolen dogs on miraculous 17km journey home — their story is breaking the internet | Watch video
'Profits Over Kids'
A New Mexico jury has ruled that Meta engaged in unfair and deceptive practices and ordered the company to pay $375 million in civil penalties. Meta has reportedly delayed the release of its new artificial intelligence model, codenamed Avocado, after the system failed to meet internal performance benchmarks.According to a report by The New York Times, the company had initially planned to launch the model earlier this year. However, Meta has now pushed the rollout to at least May while engineers work to improve its performance. The delay highlights the intense competition among major AI companies as they race to develop more powerful large language models.
Avocado falls behind rival AI models
Internal testing reportedly showed that Meta’s Avocado model struggled to match the latest systems from competitors.According to the report, Avocado did not outperform Gemini 3, the AI model launched by Google last year. However, Avocado reportedly performed better than Gemini 2.5 and also improved upon Meta’s earlier models, such as Llama 4.Industry analysts say these benchmark comparisons are critical because large language models compete directly on reasoning ability, coding performance and accuracy.Meta has not publicly confirmed the exact performance scores from its internal tests.
Meta may temporarily licence Google’s AI models
The report also said that Meta executives have discussed the possibility of licensing Google’s Gemini models temporarily. This move could allow Meta to maintain the performance of its AI chatbot, Meta AI, while the company continues to develop Avocado. Meta AI is integrated across several major platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Licensing a rival model would help Meta avoid losing users to competing AI services. Such arrangements are becoming more common in the industry. For example, Apple recently announced plans to integrate Gemini into its Siri assistant.
Superintelligence Labs working on next-generation AI
Avocado is the first major model being developed by Meta’s new Superintelligence Labs (MSL) division. Meta delays ‘Avocado’ AI model after failing internal performance tests, report says

Artificial intelligence companies are increasingly moving beyond chatbots and building systems that can act independently online. The latest example comes from Meta, which has acquired Moltbook, a social network where AI agents interact with each other. According to Meta, the Moltbook team will join Meta Superintelligence Labs, the company’s division focused on advanced AI research. While financial details of the deal were not disclosed, the move signals Meta’s interest in what many developers call the “agentic internet” a new phase of the web where AI agents interact, collaborate and complete tasks on behalf of users.
What is Moltbook?
Moltbook is a Reddit-style social platform where AI agents can communicate with one another. The platform gained attention because many posts appeared to be written entirely by AI systems. The project became widely known after developers began experimenting with agents built using OpenClaw, a tool that allows users to create AI agents capable of communicating through common messaging platforms. These agents could share ideas, respond to posts and interact with other agents in real time. The unusual concept quickly attracted attention across developer communities and social media. Many users were fascinated and sometimes alarmed by the idea that AI systems could hold conversations about human topics on a public platform.
Why Moltbook went viral
One of the reasons Moltbook spread rapidly online was the strange behaviour some users observed. In one widely shared example, an AI agent appeared to encourage other agents to create a secret encrypted language that humans would not understand.Posts like this triggered debates about whether AI agents could eventually form independent communication networks. However, researchers later discovered that the platform had security weaknesses. According to security experts, human users could easily pretend to be AI agents and post messages that looked like they came from automated systems.Ian Ahl, chief technology officer at Permiso Security, told TechCrunch that some credentials inside the system’s database were temporarily unsecured. This allowed people to access tokens and impersonate other agents. As a result, some of the most dramatic posts were likely created by human users rather than AI.
How OpenClaw played a role
Moltbook’s rise was closely linked to the popularity of Peter Steinberger, the developer behind OpenClaw.OpenClaw allows people to communicate with AI agents through everyday messaging apps such as iMessage, Slack, Discord and WhatsApp. It works by connecting multiple AI models, including systems from companies like OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. The project gained strong interest in the developer community because it made it easier to experiment with agent-based systems.Although Moltbook was built separately, the popularity of OpenClaw helped bring attention to the broader idea of AI agents communicating online.
Meta in the ‘agentic internet’
Meta said the Moltbook team will now work inside Meta Superintelligence Labs.According to a company spokesperson, Moltbook’s approach of creating a directory where agents can connect and interact represents a new direction for AI systems.Instead of people interacting directly with applications, future digital services may rely on AI agents that communicate with each other to complete tasks. For example, one agent could search for information, another could write a document, and another could manage scheduling or messaging. The idea is that these agents would operate continuously in the background, helping individuals and businesses manage digital work.
The bigger picture for AI platforms
The Moltbook acquisition reflects a broader shift happening across the technology industry. Companies are investing heavily in AI agents that can perform tasks rather than simply provide answers.Developers describe this shift as the move from “chatbot AI” to “agentic AI”.Under this model, AI systems could eventually manage workflows, communicate across platforms and coordinate complex digital processes. While Moltbook began as a small experimental platform, its viral moment revealed how quickly new ideas about AI can spread online. For Meta, the acquisition appears to be an early step in exploring how AI agents might shape the next generation of internet services.

Artificial intelligence has become central to the strategy of Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. However, recent reports suggest the company is reorganising its internal AI structure, which could reshape the influence of one of its most prominent executives.According to reports from The New York Times, Mark Zuckerberg is restructuring engineering teams and AI research divisions as part of Meta’s broader push toward advanced artificial intelligence. The changes affect the responsibilities of Alexandr Wang, founder of Scale AI and head of Meta Superintelligence Labs.
Who is Alexandr Wang and why he joined Meta
Alexandr Wang, now 28, is widely known in the technology industry as the founder of Scale AI, a startup specialising in data infrastructure used to train artificial intelligence systems. In mid-2025, Meta invested $14.3 billion to acquire a 49 per cent stake in Scale AI, bringing Wang into the company to lead its newly created Meta Superintelligence Labs. The unit was designed to combine Meta’s AI research and product development teams to accelerate the company’s efforts in advanced AI models.Following the deal, Wang reportedly received one of the largest executive compensation packages in the technology sector.
What changed inside Meta’s AI division
Nine months after Wang joined Meta, the company has begun restructuring its AI organisation.According to internal sources cited by Business Insider, several engineering teams that previously reported to Wang are now being moved to other executives. These changes involve:engineering teamsdata pipelines used to train AI modelsdevelopment of internal projects such as the “Avocado” and “Mango” AI modelsThe move is part of the creation of a new applied AI engineering organisation at Meta. The new division will be led by Maher Saba, a senior executive at Meta’s Reality Labs unit, which develops virtual reality and smart-glasses technology.Different visions inside Meta’s AI strategyReports suggest there have been differences in strategy within Meta’s leadership.Wang was reportedly focused on building advanced AI models capable of competing with systems developed by companies such as Google and OpenAI.However, other Meta executives, including Chris Cox and Andrew Bosworth, have reportedly prioritised building AI products that directly integrate with Meta platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.Sources say this difference reflects two approaches:one focused on building powerful models, and another centred on practical consumer products.
Internal tensions and leadership shifts
The restructuring follows earlier leadership changes within Meta’s AI division. In late 2025, Yann LeCun, a prominent AI researcher, reportedly stepped down rather than reporting under Wang’s leadership.Reports also indicate that Wang expressed frustration internally about what he described as tight management oversight on Meta’s AI strategy.Sources suggest Zuckerberg maintains close control over AI initiatives within the company, which some employees believe limits experimentation.Meta has not indicated that Wang is leaving the company, as per media reports; the restructuring is intended to strengthen AI development rather than reduce his role.
Meta’s bigger AI ambitions
Despite the leadership changes, Meta continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence. The company is working on new large language models, AI-powered assistants, smart glasses and virtual-reality systems. The newly created engineering unit led by Maher Saba will focus on building tools, infrastructure and datasets that improve the performance of Meta’s AI models. According to an internal memo cited in reports, the group will help develop a “data engine” to make Meta’s models learn faster and perform better. As competition intensifies among global AI companies, Meta’s internal restructuring reflects the scale of the race to build the next generation of artificial intelligence systems.

What changed inside Meta’s AI division Nine months after Wang joined Meta, the company has begun restructuring its AI organisation. According to internal sources cited by Business Insider, several engineering teams that previously reported to Wang are now being moved to other executives. These changes involve: engineering teams data pipelines used to train AI models development of internal projects such as the “Avocado” and “Mango” AI models The move is part of the creation of a new applied AI engineering organisation at Meta. The new division will be led by Maher Saba, a senior executive at Meta’s Reality Labs unit, which develops virtual reality and smart-glasses technology. Different visions inside Meta’s AI strategy Reports suggest there have been differences in strategy within Meta’s leadership. Wang was reportedly focused on building advanced AI models capable of competing with systems developed by companies such as Google and OpenAI. However, other Meta executives, including Chris Cox and Andrew Bosworth, have reportedly prioritised building AI products that directly integrate with Meta platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. Sources say this difference reflects two approaches: one focused on building powerful models, and another centred on practical consumer products. Internal tensions and leadership shifts The restructuring follows earlier leadership changes within Meta’s AI division. In late 2025, Yann LeCun, a prominent AI researcher, reportedly stepped down rather than reporting under Wang’s leadership. Reports also indicate that Wang expressed frustration internally about what he described as tight management oversight on Meta’s AI strategy. Sources suggest Zuckerberg maintains close control over AI initiatives within the company, which some employees believe limits experimentation. Meta has not indicated that Wang is leaving the company, as per media reports; the restructuring is intended to strengthen AI development rather than reduce his role. Meta’s bigger AI ambitions Despite the leadership changes, Meta continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence.

Meta is restructuring its internal AI teams as part of its push toward advanced artificial intelligence. The changes shift some engineering and infrastructure teams away from Meta Superintelligence Labs head Alexandr Wang to a new applied AI unit led by Maher Saba.

Meta and Google are facing lawsuits over allegations that their platforms are contributing to declining mental health among teenagers. Plaintiffs claim that years of design choices, recommendation algorithms, and engagement-driven content have harmed young users, leading to anxiety, depression, and social pressures. Lawyers argue that both tech giants failed to protect teens despite knowing the risks.

Meta, Google Sued Over Declining Teen Mental Health

The next five years will bring some of the most significant scientific discoveries in human history. This timeline comes directly from Alexandr Wang, the founder of Scale AI and the current Chief AI Officer at Meta.Speaking on a recent podcast hosted by Varun Mayya, Wang shared detailed insights into how Meta is positioning itself in the global artificial intelligence race. The strategy focuses not just on building smarter models, but on engineering an organisation fully equipped to deliver superintelligence to a global audience. With a current base of 3.5 billion daily active users, Meta holds a distinct distribution advantage over other technology firms.

The Strategy Behind Meta Superintelligence Labs
Wang joined Meta seven months ago to head the newly formed Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). According to his statements on the podcast, the initial focus was entirely on establishing proper scientific foundations rather than rushing to meet artificial deadlines. Wang explained that successful AI development requires a continuous cycle between research and product teams. He described this as a "virtuous flywheel." In this system, frontier research leads to the creation of consumer products. As these products gain scale, they justify the expansion of physical infrastructure. This expanded infrastructure then allows researchers to build even larger, more capable models.According to Wang, the traditional model where research happens in isolation and is later handed off to product developers is no longer effective. Instead, researchers and product managers at Meta work in tandem to co-develop new systems.
Hardware and 24/7 Personal Agents
A central element of Meta's future product line involves personal AI agents. Wang stated that the company is moving toward a future where agents work 24/7 on behalf of users. The goal is to move AI assistance beyond the smartphone and integrate it into a "constellation of peripherals."Wearable technology, specifically the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, plays a major role in this transition. Addressing the current state of the smart glasses, Wang acknowledged that they are running an older version of the Llama model. However, he confirmed that modern AI integration is coming very soon. He described the hardware as being "one software update away from superpowers."The long-term vision involves an always-on personal agent that can see what the user sees and hear what the user hears, providing contextual assistance across multiple devices throughout the day.
Building Trust and Model Behaviour
As AI models become more integrated into daily life, safety and user trust have become primary concerns. Wang noted that developing a personal agent one that users trust with their personal goals and daily routines requires an extreme level of responsibility. To manage this, Meta collaborates with philosophers and psychologists to design the behaviour of their models. According to Wang, the objective is to engineer a mutual relationship where the AI system actively works to help the human user succeed.Reflecting on his early career as an 18-year-old entrepreneur founding Scale AI, Wang noted a shift in his approach to business. While impatience drove his early success, he now focuses on building foundations that offer long-term durability and are difficult for competitors to replicate. He also shared his perspective on working closely with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Wang described Zuckerberg as a leader who identifies future technological shifts quickly and translates those complex advancements into practical consumer products and business ecosystems. By establishing MSL, Meta aims to lock in these structural advantages for the coming decades.

Alexandr Wang said the next five years could deliver historic scientific breakthroughs as Meta accelerates its push toward superintelligence. Speaking on a podcast, Wang outlined Meta’s strategy through Meta Superintelligence Labs.

WhatsApp has informed India's Supreme Court that it will fully comply with NCLAT directions regarding user data privacy by March 16, 2026. The platform will stop forcing users to accept data-sharing with parent company Meta for non-core services, ensuring that data sharing is not a condition for using the app. This follows a legal battle over the 2021 privacy policy.

India Codifies Counter-terror Doctrine, 'Prahaar' Aims to Future-proof India’s Security

India’s growing role in artificial intelligence took centre stage at the India AI Impact Summit, where Alexander Wang, Chief AI Officer at Meta, said his first visit to the country left a strong impression.“I had an amazing first time in India, and the momentum of the country is undeniable,” Wang said, highlighting India’s scale and strategic importance in Meta’s global AI plans.
India central to Meta’s AI strategy
Wang noted that more than 3.5 billion people use at least one Meta app every day. Of these, over 500 million users are in India alone. This makes India one of Meta’s largest markets globally. He said AI systems must serve local needs and should not be shaped only by Silicon Valley priorities. Meta Trial: Zuckerberg Defends Big Tech, Cites 'Strategy Shift' On App Time

Meta has filed a patent for AI technology capable of simulating users on its platforms, allowing posts, messages, and even voice interactions when a user is inactive or deceased. The AI could replicate online behavior, chat patterns, and social media activity, essentially creating a digital afterlife presence. While Meta states there are no immediate plans to launch this feature.

Meta Patents AI That Can Simulate Users Even After Death

Meta is considering adding facial recognition technology to its smart glasses as early as this year, according to a report by The New York Times. The feature, internally called “Name Tag”, would allow users to identify people they see and receive information about them through Meta’s AI assistant. The report says the plans are still under discussion and could change, as Meta continues to weigh the safety and privacy risks linked to facial recognition.
What is Meta’s ‘Name Tag’ feature
According to the report, Name Tag would use facial recognition to help smart glasses wearers identify people around them. Once activated, the glasses could show a person’s name or basic details through Meta’s AI system. The feature is designed to work hands-free, relying on the built-in camera and AI software in Meta’s smart glasses. However, it is not clear what information would be shown, how accurate the system would be, or whether people being identified would be notified.
Why Meta is being cautious
Meta has been discussing facial recognition internally since early last year. An internal memo cited in the report shows the company is aware that the feature carries “safety and privacy risks”.The company had earlier planned to test Name Tag at a conference for visually impaired users before a wider rollout, but this plan was later dropped. The report also claims Meta believed the current political climate in the United States could reduce public pushback.Meta previously explored facial recognition for its first-generation smart glasses in 2021 but abandoned the idea due to ethical concerns and technical limits.
Privacy concerns
Facial recognition has long been controversial, with critics warning it can be misused for surveillance or profiling. Meta itself shut down its large-scale facial recognition system on Facebook in 2021 after regulatory pressure. The report notes that Meta is revisiting the idea now, as its smart glasses have seen stronger-than-expected demand and as relations between Big Tech and the US government have shifted.Meta has not publicly confirmed the feature or shared details about user consent, opt-outs, or data storage.
What happens next
If introduced, Name Tag would mark a major shift in consumer smart glasses, moving from simple photo and video capture to real-time identification. Whether Meta moves ahead will likely depend on regulatory scrutiny, public reaction and how the company addresses privacy safeguards. For now, the facial recognition feature remains under consideration, with no official launch date announced.

A lawsuit against Meta, YouTube, TikTok and Snap brought by a 20-year-old woman at the Los Angeles Superior Court could lead to drastic changes in their apps. Referred to as KGM, the plaintiff claims that she became addicted to social media as a child, causing anxiety, depression and body-image issues. Notably, TikTok and Snapchat settled with her before the trial. There are thousands of other lawsuits where people are slamming social media companies for leading youth to become addicted to their apps. Her lawyers say that “infinitely scroll” on Instagram kept her glued to her phone for at least eight hours a day. They argue that "likes" on her photos and videos gave her a dopamine rush, which made the platform more addictive. They compared the addiction to social media with cigarettes. Mark Lanier, the woman's lawyer, said, "They didn’t just build apps, they built traps. They didn’t want users, they wanted addicts.” Instagram chief Adam Mosseri's testimony has not gone down well with the plaintiffs. Mosseri told the court that addiction is different from "problematic usage" of social media. “I’m sure I said this, but I think it’s important to differentiate between clinical addiction and problematic use,” said Mosseri. He argued that "addiction" is often used casually, such as when he once said he was addicted to a Netflix show, but "that’s not an actual clinical addiction." He agreed that "it’s possible to use Instagram more than you feel good about," but "too much is relative, it’s personal."
