"I basically burned out my adrenal glands and my nervous system couldn't take it anymore. I felt bad about it, I felt like I couldn't tell people that because they looked at me and they're like, She has everything. Like, they wouldn't even understand." 
 
Bündchen, 43, was discovered in a mall when she was 14, and soon became one of the most coveted faces on the ramp after moving from her hometown in Brazil to the US. 
 
Cowan asked, "How did the anxiety start to present itself?" 
 
"You know, I was in tunnels; I couldn't breathe," Bündchen said. "And then, I started being in studios, and I felt, like, suffocated. I lived on the 9th floor, and I had to go up the stairs because I was afraid I would be stuck on the elevator, and I'd be hyperventilating. Because you know, when you can't breathe even when the windows are open, you feel like, I don't want to live like this."

When she was asked if she really thought of jumping, Bundghen said, "Yeah. For, like, a second, because you're like, I can't." 
 
The model, however, said&nbsp;she took control and went into a complete detox. Gisele eliminated caffeine, sugar and alcohol from her routine and began meditating daily.&nbsp; 
 
"I wake up at five," she said. "Yeah, I like to wake up early, I like to greet the sun. You know, sometimes you're tired and you're like, 'Okay, I'm just going to sleep in a little bit,' but I feel a difference when I do that." 
 
She recalled she met her ex-husband Tom Brady soon after she adapted the new lifestyle. The pair knew each other for 16 years and was married for 13 before they announced their divorce.&nbsp; 
 
"I look into my life, and I wouldn't have it any other way," she said. "I wouldn't have any other life. I wouldn't have done it. If they say, can you change something in your life? I wouldn't change absolutely anything."

Tom and Gisele confirmed their divorce in October 2022 after 13 years of marriage.

Gisele told "CBS News Sunday Morning" that their decision to divorce was "not what I dreamed of and what I hoped for."

Gisele added, "My parents have been married for 50 years, and I really wanted that to happen. But I think you have to accept, you know, sometimes that the way you are in your 20s, it's sometimes you grow together, sometimes you grow apart. I mean, he's the father of my kids, you know? So, I always wish him the best, and I'm so grateful that he gave me wonderful children."

Every year, close to a million aspirants appear for a series of nine tests that decide their fate of getting an opportunity to serve&nbsp;in Indian bureaucracy, eventually enabling them to hold positions both national and international. Of these, only a thousand make the cut. But what about the rest, who usually toil for years and exhaust most, if not all the six attempts available to pass the test?&nbsp;

More often than not, they initially repeat the process, trapped in a vicious cycle of hope and despair.&nbsp;

To find out what exactly those "left behind" go through, WION connected with some UPSC aspirants who are still caught between yearning and hopelessness, as well as a former candidate who has crossed the battlefield and is now an IAS, or Indian Administration Service, officer. We also talked to mental health experts and career counsellors who shed light on the struggle of these aspirants and suggested positive pathways to handle the dejection.&nbsp;

Here's what they said:

<h2>Stuck in one place...</h2>

A common narrative that many aspirants share is the feeling of being stationary while the world moves on. Chinmay Desai, a 27-year-old aspirant who has appeared for the civil services exams five out of the total six attempts, painted a dark picture.&nbsp;

"You feel stuck in one place...like you're standing in a crowd of people and everyone is rushing by, but you can't move."

Chinmay holds a master's degree in International Studies and has been preparing for the exam "on and off" since 2017. Six years down the line, he fears that, if he fails the last attempt, to enter the workforce he will have to spend at least 2-3 more years, doing a diploma or a course to match up to people his age.

Another UPSC hopeful, 25-year-old Aafreen, who along with the preparation has been working as a law associate, agrees: "After a certain number of attempts you do feel tired, you feel exhausted, and you definitely want to step out of the race."&nbsp;

"It was very exhausting, no other way to put it," she says, talking about how the exam has affected her mental health.

"Right after college, all my close friends, they started working at law firms...they started earning basically...they fit themselves into a certain profile and they kept moving forward. You always feel like okay you are left behind and then you counsel yourself by saying, okay, I have chosen a very difficult path, if it will take time, it will be fruitful, which is why you know, it's worth the wait."

"But it's really&nbsp;exhausting."

She goes on to talk about what the so-called 'UPSC preparation' can mean for a person's finances. Something as simple as a short trip with friends can contribute to mental and emotional distress.

She says that if you're on a trip with a couple of friends somewhere, "they would like to splurge" but "as an aspirant and as a person who doesn't ask money from their parents, I don't like doing that."

At times, "you have to be a miser and that at times makes you feel...sometimes...a little lesser than&nbsp;someone&nbsp;else."

"It is very exhausting to keep feeling like you don't have a direction when they (your friends) do," she adds.

Pranav Puri, a 26-year-old student of journalism and international studies, recalls how when he didn't qualify after giving his all in his first attempt, he felt burnt out.

"I wasn't really demoralised (initially), but when I checked the answer key," the next two days "I just could not get up from my bed."

<h2>Dealing with hopelessness</h2>

All three aspirants confessed to mental pressure and duress but revealed that they have not sought help from a professional. In the perilous journey of UPSC preparation, their families have been their support systems.&nbsp;

Aafreen confessed that at times when she found herself battling other stressful situations along with the examination, she did "consider talking to a professional," but "that didn't materialise for me".

Psychologist Jhanvi Jain, CEO and founder of WhyNott, a mental health wellness centre, says that while familial support is important and needed, "your parents are not going to be able to give you that objective, non-biased view."

"Through therapy, you see a very different perspective," says Jain.&nbsp;

She says that while you may feel lighter after talking to your parents or your friends, they will make you feel good, but "that emotion has not been processed, it's still in your body."

"Emotions, they get stored in your body, trauma gets stored in your body. Your past experiences are already in your body, so you'll not be able to recognise the triggers if they were to happen again and again."&nbsp;

This, as per the mental health counsellor, can be remedied through therapy.

<h2>How to deal with stress that comes with civil services preparation?</h2>

According to the counselling psychologist, how the exam affects an aspirant's mental health needs to be addressed at the exam prep institute level. She suggests that seeking mental health help while preparing for the exam should be made mandatory. "I personally would really love it."

Acknowledging that therapy can get expensive, Jain suggests that UPSC aspirants struggling with stress, anxiety and other issues can seek help from psychologists that offer therapy on a "sliding scale basis".&nbsp;

Describing the concept, the therapist shares that she and many of her colleagues try to help out people from different walks of life at a fee much lesser than their normal charges. She also suggested platforms like "Youth for Mental Health, Recover Media, and Talk to Therapist," for low-cost or&nbsp;free&nbsp;therapy.

Career counsellor Hanish Dogra says that failure in the UPSC exam is not the end of the world. He says that during their preparation, the aspirants gain a huge amount of knowledge, which they can utilise for other "reputed jobs" like state services etc. "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst," he said.

<h2>'Victory speech:' You are your own person</h2>

A former aspirant and now IAS officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that she was unable to crack even the qualifying exam on her first attempt and that her second attempt — in which she failed to make the final list by just seven marks — brought her to her knees. However, she emerged victorious from her&nbsp;third and final attempt. She&nbsp;says that while it may "feel like you're not moving ahead" an aspirant must learn to "insulate themselves from comparisons" so as to "retain their mental health".

While medical cannabis is still a subject of ongoing research, preliminary studies suggest that certain components of it may hold promise for alleviating symptoms associated with various mental health conditions.

Uses of Medical Cannabis in Mental Health

Anxiety and Stress Reduction: Medical cannabis has shown promise in reducing symptoms of anxiety disorders and stress-related conditions. Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis, has demonstrated anxiolytic properties and is believed to provide a calming effect.

Depression and Mood Disorders: Medical cannabis has been found to have antidepressant effects, which makes it an effective treatment option for people with depression. THC and CBD work by regulating the levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that affects mood and social behaviour.

These findings offer hope for those suffering from PTSD, although further research is necessary to fully understand the mechanisms and determine optimal dosages for therapeutic use.

However, determining the appropriate dosage of medical cannabis for mental health conditions requires careful consideration. Factors such as individual tolerance, condition severity, and desired effects play a crucial role. It is advisable to consult with a knowledgeable healthcare professional or medical cannabis specialist to ensure safe and effective use.

While ‘working mom’ is a common term, one rarely uses the term ‘working dad’. In most parts of the world, men are expected and conditioned, almost by default, to be breadwinners, protectors, disciplinarians, and heads of households. When men become fathers, the responsibility of financially providing for their growing families is just the tip of the iceberg.&nbsp; 
 
Male infertility 
 
Even before conception, dads-to-be face struggles, starting with having a hard time with conception and infertility struggles. According to the Indian Society of Assisted Reproduction (ISAR), infertility affects 10–14 per cent&nbsp;of Indian couples, and a recent WHO report on the status of infertility in India found that approximately 50 per cent&nbsp;of that can be attributed to low counts in males. There is a deep stigma associated with infertility in males, and historically the focus has been primarily on female fertility, leading to a lack of awareness and diagnosis related to fertility in males. Failure or struggles to conceive can adversely affect men mentally, emotionally, and socially, as well as lead to disengagement and disconnect from their professional lives and careers.&nbsp; 
 
Work-life balance 
 
While financial pressure is the most often discussed problem that working dads face, it is important to consider the toll such work-life balancing pressure takes on their health. According to a study conducted by Future Generali India Life Insurance Company Limited and Market Xcel - Market Agency Research in India, 85 per cent&nbsp;of fathers reported that they felt they were not able to achieve work-life balance. With 68 per cent&nbsp;of Indian fathers working six days a week, the results include them putting their own health on a backseat as they do their best to spend time with their family.&nbsp;

Especially new dads, who may or may not be able to take time off for antenatal appointments or take paternity leave, feel a sense of guilt for not being able to support their spouse through the first critical thousand days. The early days of their baby’s life often include working fathers battling fatigue, sleepless nights, hair loss, anxiety, stress and a sense of not being as close or needed by the baby. &nbsp;

Paternal postpartum depression 
 
Around 1 in 10 men experience paternal postpartum depression (PPD) after the birth of their child, and question if they would be a good parent. PPD or PPA (Post-Partum Anxiety) can be hard to spot in men as the symptoms may overlap with the general stress of taking care of a baby and professional pressure including their job security, networking at work, and pressure to increase their income. &nbsp;

As working dads strive to be more involved in the caretaking process to reduce the unequal burden of childcare solely expected to be taken up by mothers, the lack of support systems, stigma and negative attitudes about men as caretakers make it hard for them to voice their concerns or seek help from experts and doctors when required. Research shows that working dads may also struggle with the changes in their relationship with their spouse, disengagement at work due to new stressors, and fear being seen as a failure for needing help or support to cope with the changes in both their professional and personal lives.&nbsp;

When men become fathers, the responsibility of financially providing for their growing families is just the tip of the iceberg. Male infertility Even before conception, dads-to-be face struggles, starting with having a hard time with conception and infertility struggles. According to the Indian Society of Assisted Reproduction (ISAR), infertility affects 10–14 per cent of Indian couples, and a recent WHO report on the status of infertility in India found that approximately 50 per cent of that can be attributed to low counts in males. There is a deep stigma associated with infertility in males, and historically the focus has been primarily on female fertility, leading to a lack of awareness and diagnosis related to fertility in males. Failure or struggles to conceive can adversely affect men mentally, emotionally, and socially, as well as lead to disengagement and disconnect from their professional lives and careers. Work-life balance While financial pressure is the most often discussed problem that working dads face, it is important to consider the toll such work-life balancing pressure takes on their health. According to a study conducted by Future Generali India Life Insurance Company Limited and Market Xcel - Market Agency Research in India, 85 per cent of fathers reported that they felt they were not able to achieve work-life balance. With 68 per cent of Indian fathers working six days a week, the results include them putting their own health on a backseat as they do their best to spend time with their family. Especially new dads, who may or may not be able to take time off for antenatal appointments or take paternity leave, feel a sense of guilt for not being able to support their spouse through the first critical thousand days. The early days of their baby’s life often include working fathers battling fatigue, sleepless nights, hair loss, anxiety, stress and a sense of not being as close or needed by the baby. Paternal postpartum depression Around 1 in 10 men experience paternal postpartum depression (PPD) after the birth of their child, and question if they would be a good parent. PPD or PPA (Post-Partum Anxiety) can be hard to spot in men as the symptoms may overlap with the general stress of taking care of a baby and professional pressure including their job security, networking at work, and pressure to increase their income. As working dads strive to be more involved in the caretaking process to reduce the unequal burden of childcare solely expected to be taken up by mothers, the lack of support systems, stigma and negative attitudes about men as caretakers make it hard for them to voice their concerns or seek help from experts and doctors when required. Research shows that working dads may also struggle with the changes in their relationship with their spouse, disengagement at work due to new stressors, and fear being seen as a failure for needing help or support to cope with the changes in both their professional and personal lives. *The writer is the founder of Humm Care. Among couples of all ages who have been trying to conceive a baby and are unsuccessful after several attempts, would you believe that 50 per cent of the time, infertility stems from the man? It’s not me exaggerating these numbers but according to the World Health Organization, in all of the infertility cases reported in India, 50 per cent are due to the “male factor” and the woman is usually sexually healthy to produce. You hardly ever hear this though. It’s often a lack of awareness that puts the blame for being infertile on the woman (without any medical proof) and she is then subjected to society-inflicted trauma and ostracisation. But that is a topic for a separate discussion.&nbsp;

Infertility among men refers to a condition where a man is unable to cause a pregnancy in a fertile female, due to a sedentary lifestyle, poor life choices, insufficient nutrition in diet and many other related issues. This&nbsp;leads to anxiety and stress that then affects his family life, interpersonal relationships with immediate family members, including his partner, and mood in general. To sum it up, he is unhappy and discontent. If not recognised and treated early, this then translates into a mental health issue. And we know how unhappy we are as a generation!

<h2>How to approach the issue of infertility in males?</h2>

To understand&nbsp;how we can deal with this situation delicately and not let infertility cause mental health issues, WION spoke to Diana Crasta, Chief Psychologist at Nova IVF Fertility. She addressed&nbsp;the fragile relationship between physical and mental health, how to lead&nbsp;a healthy life and approaching infertility issues as a team rather than a ‘me vs you’ thing.&nbsp;

Happy with the progress in the psyche of her clients today (men and women), Diana said that while fertility challenges faced by men have received less attention, compared to women, and is still a hush-hush topic in many states, there has, however, been a gradual shift in recent years towards recognising and discussing male fertility problems. While the cultural and societal norms surrounding male fertility can vary across different regions and communities, there are indications of progress in terms of men being more open about facing fertility issues.

“Increased awareness campaigns, medical advancements, and changing societal attitudes have contributed to this shift. It is important to emphasise that cultural stigmas and taboos surrounding male fertility issues may persist in certain societies. These stigmas can hinder open discussions and prevent men from seeking essential medical assistance. The prevailing pattern, however, indicates a growing normalisation of the discourse on male fertility, with men increasingly willing to address their reproductive challenges,” she said.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
The best approach she lists is to tie this down to the couple vs an individual. This helps in not making one person in the couple guilty of being ‘unfit’ to copulate. “The first step is couple counselling,” said Diana.&nbsp;

<h2>Best ways to get men to address the issue in front of an expert</h2>

On how psychologists must tread down the sticky slope and build a safe and supportive environment for the individual to express their concerns, Diana lists some things she does while approaching them.

● Establish rapport and trust: Build a stronger therapeutic alliance by actively listening, demonstrating empathy, and showing genuine care and understanding.

● Validate emotions and normalise experiences: Acknowledge and validate the individual's feelings surrounding male fertility concerns. Help them understand that it is natural to experience a range of emotions, including frustration, sadness, or anxiety.

● Provide psychoeducation: Educate the individual about male fertility, including the factors that can contribute to fertility problems and available treatment options. Help them understand the physiological and psychological aspects of male reproductive health

● Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team: Recognise the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to addressing male fertility concerns. Collaborate with medical professionals, such as reproductive specialists or urologists, to ensure comprehensive care. Lastly, we just need to remember that every individual is unique, and it is crucial to tailor your approach to their specific needs, values, and cultural background.

<h2>Building a rapport for&nbsp;effective communication</h2>

But it’s easier said than done, points out Diana, who admits it's quite challenging to get males to talk about their infertility. Oftentimes, she has seen that men expect women to be seen by psychological counsellors first. “By establishing a rapport and helping them identify the problem at its root, we provide them with a holistic picture of their concerns. By sharing similar journeys of patients such as themselves, support group meetings, we help men open up. This is a long-term process, and the results are not witnessed in the first, initial meeting but with time and efforts,” said Diana.&nbsp;

Getting men to express their concerns is challenging but of utmost importance because not addressing the elephant in the room can have dire consequences – from marital discord to mental health issues. Diana agreed and added, “Infertility affects mental health to a great extent. It can lead to significant stress and anxiety, and couples may experience a sense of loss, low self-esteem, and these factors can put a strain on their relationships. In these cases, we want the couple to be one team and pass this storm together.”

She continued, “Mental health and fertility issues are intertwined, with each impacting the other in diverse ways. The challenges of fertility struggles can result in notable stress and anxiety. The emotional burden of attempting to conceive, undergoing fertility treatments, or facing recurrent pregnancy loss can intensify stress levels and contribute to feelings of sadness, grief, and depression. In addition, fertility challenges can put a strain on relationships, causing conflicts, misunderstandings, and decreased intimacy. It can have an impact on mental health and well-being, further exacerbating the stress associated with fertility issues. Conversely, pre-existing stress and anxiety can also affect fertility by disrupting hormonal balance and impacting reproductive functions.”

But what helps these health professionals is that more people are now ready to recognise the problem at hand and seek help. “When patients come to us these days, what helps is that they are ready to reconcile, face the problems and deal with the issues. By facilitating this process, we help couples work together as one team and support each other in their fertility journey. We help couples understand how important it is to be positive in their journey toward parenthood and staying happy in general,” Diana reflected.&nbsp;

Physical and sexual health goes hand in hand. Hence, it's important to keep both in check for a happy life. She shared with us some tips to adopt a healthy lifestyle, which includes taking care of both your body and mind.&nbsp;

Actor Gulshan Devaiah has slammed Nawazuddin Siddiqui over his statement on depression. Siddiqui, in a recent interview, claimed that depression is an urban concept born out of privilege. Days later, the actor reiterated his statement and said if he spoke of mental health in his native village, he would be thrashed.&nbsp;

Speaking to NDTV, Nawazuddin recently said, "I was just narrating my experience. It’s possible I’m wrong. But even today, if I were to go to my village, which is just three hours away, and say that I have depression, I’d get slapped. They’d tell me to eat food and go to the fields." 
 
When he was asked if people in rural India weren't aware of conversations around mental health, the actor said, “It doesn’t exist. Nobody knows about it, nobody has depression in villages. It’s a fact, go check." 
 
“You see, in cities, people have the habit of glorifying even the smallest problems. Why don’t they see how people with real problems live their lives? Look how they dance on footpaths in the rain, why don’t those people have depression?” the actor added.

All these factors could contribute to a better understanding of the childhood experiences of the baboons.&nbsp;

Forging strong social relationships helps overcome childhood trauma, prolongs life: Study

Princess of Wales Kate Middleton&nbsp;picked a yellow-white ensemble for her first engagement of Mental Health Awareness Week. She met young minds at Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, which is a youth development charity in Bath, founded by Olympic athlete Kelly Holmes. For those unaware, yellow is often used&nbsp;by&nbsp;mental health charities to mark&nbsp;World Mental Health Day.

The 41-year-old royal met children from St. Katherine's School at Bath and discussed some of the major challenges they face as students in an ever-changing world. They also discussed how working with an athlete mentor has helped them manage their emotions and resilience.

The students, aged 11 to 19, will be taking part in the trust's On Track To Achieve programme, which is led by Paralympic gold medalist Liz Johnson.

The youth development organisation brings wellness programmes to children's hospitals and schools, using sports stars to pass on their winning mindset to the students.

They also discussed how working with an athlete mentor has helped them manage their emotions and resilience. The students, aged 11 to 19, will be taking part in the trust's On Track To Achieve programme, which is led by Paralympic gold medalist Liz Johnson. The youth development organisation brings wellness programmes to children's hospitals and schools, using sports stars to pass on their winning mindset to the students.
