The researchers examined high-resolution MRI scans of 30 people who were infected before vaccines were made available for the deadly virus.

But connectivity is not bringing any more happiness to the young girls. Half of the respondents felt uncertain about their future. Only a quarter felt confident about their lives.

And paradoxically, the feeling that online connections are strong has decreased in the past four years, meaning greater connectivity is only leading to more vulnerability for the youth.

One of the issues reported is not new: the unrealistic beauty standards pushed by social media.

A report in The Guardian quoted a Girlguiding advocate Jia,17, as saying that this pressure exacerbates feelings of judgement and comparison, causing loneliness and low self esteem.

“Being online all the time amplifies this. While we’re ‘more connected’, we’re also more exposed to judgment and comparison – through body shaming, sexist jokes, online harassment and objectification. This fuels loneliness and erodes our confidence, which only makes it harder to feel positive about the future,” the paper quoted her as saying.

The girls and young women face a number of other issues when online: 85 per cent of respondents experienced sexism. For more than 50 per cent, sexism&nbsp;happened in real life, while nearly three quarters faced it online.&nbsp;

Sexism fuels thoughts of not feeling safe, with 47 per cent of the girls feeling threatened. This is more than double the rate 10 years ago.

The silver lining of the survey is that&nbsp;44 per cent of the respondents still have hope about their futures.

Angela Salt, Girlguiding's CEO, said sexism continues to be pervasive, leaving many girls feeling vulnerable and unsafe, while noting that it was “devastating to see girls feel less confident about themselves and their futures”.

This, according to the author, is because of a combination of factors: our need to belong, feel loved and cared for, and the way technology companies design products to address these.

“For some people social media and gaming offer a lifesaving space. Games provide a space for people to connect, and to combat other feelings that exist in their lives such as loneliness, anxiety, and depression,” said Knibbs, a psychotherapist who specialises in cybertrauma and online harms.

She said people told her how their online communities make them feel like they are with people who understand them, see them and have the same interests.

The book, part of the new Ask The Experts in Psychology series in partnership with the British Psychological Society,&nbsp; says the first step is to understand the tricks that technology companies use to get you addicted to their apps and devices.

They "create products that deliberately tap into our innermost desires and needs so as to keep our attention on those products,” she says.

And those needs are the desire to be recognised, seen, valued, loved and needed, and the fear of missing out or FOMO.

Then there's the desire for novelty, excitement and reward. The apps send out a constant stream of prompts, pings and pushes, nudges, and rewards, to appeal to this aspect of our minds.

1. Start writing a diary of your technology use&nbsp;

2. Think critically about the situations in which you use it

3. As the question: What needs am I trying to meet when I reach for my smartphone?

4. Notice how the first use of social media of the week happened: what you did, where you were and at what time you first noticed "the urge to open the phone, laptop, computer, console etc"

5. Find out if your technology use is helpful and purposeful or not. Are you using this "in a mindful and purposeful way", so that you can feel more in control?

6. Notice the kinds of things that you seek out online, engage with, scroll past, or hover on

7. Turn the background colours on your devices to black and white

8. Remove notifications from the apps or home screen

9. Instal time blockers that tell you when you have spent a certain amount of time online.

Watching YouTube shorts, Instagram reels and TikTok videos on endless scroll is a way to kill boredom for millions of mostly young people. However, a new study has found that moving from one video to the next actually causes more boredom.

Digital switching is the practice of people switching between videos or fast-forward through them on platforms like YouTube, TikTok and Netflix. The study done in University of Toronto showed that this switching behaviour "makes people feel more bored, less satisfied, less engaged, and less meaningful in some instances."&nbsp;

The&nbsp;assessment was made based on the idea that switching from one content to other is actually a tedious process, which tires one's attention span. Boredom is directly linked to attention: it's the disparity between what one wants to do or where one wants to be versus the reality.&nbsp;

“When people keep switching through videos, they become less engaged with the videos and they are looking for something more interesting. This can lead to increased feelings of boredom,” the Guardian newspaper quoted Dr Katy Tam at the University of Toronto Scarborough, the lead author of the research, as saying.

<h2>How 'boredom on social media' study was done</h2>

The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, reached the conclusion after experiments on 1,200 participants who were shown videos and made to answer questions about boredom.

One experiment with 140 respondents revealed that people tended to switch between videos more when they rated the content more boring.&nbsp;

"We found a bidirectional, causal relationship between boredom and digital switching.&nbsp;When participants were bored, they switched and they believed that switching would help them avoid boredom," said the study.

It was found that switching between videos - or within a video - not only led to more boredom, but also reduced satisfaction, reduced attention, and lowered meaning.&nbsp;

Even when participants had the freedom to watch videos of personal choice and interest on YouTube, digital switching still intensified boredom, it found.&nbsp;

"Our findings suggest that attempts to avoid boredom through digital switching may sometimes inadvertently exacerbate it," said the authors.

They found cardiovascular disease, lipid and alcohol metabolism changes at the 40-year transition, and shifts in "immune regulation and carbohydrate metabolism" during the 60-year transition.

Risk of diseases accelerate at specific points in human lifespan.

The study pointed out that in the US,&nbsp; atherosclerosis, stroke and heart attacks are are up 40% between the ages of 40 and 59. It rises to about 75% between ages 60 and 79 and reaches &nbsp;86% at 80 years and above.

Neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s have distinct "turning points" around the ages of 40 and 65, respectively.

Use of humour by parents has a very positive impact on their relationship with children, according to a new study that highlighted the importance of laughing with your kids.

The pilot study led by Penn State University in the US had two major findings: That parents who used humour had a better relationship with their kids, and that children of parents with good humour sense considered their relationship more positively when they grew up.

"Humour can teach people cognitive flexibility, relieve stress, and promote creative problem solving and resilience," ScienceDaily quoted Benjamin Levi, the lead author of the study, as saying.

"My father used humour and it was very effective. I use humour in my clinical practice and with my own children," said Levi, a professor of paediatrics at Penn State College of Medicine. "The question became, how does one constructively use humour?"

For the study published in PLOS One journal, the researchers surveyed 312 respondents aged between 18 and 45.&nbsp;

Over 50 per cent of respondents said their parents used humour. And 71.8% agreed that humour can be an effective parenting tool. Most respondents do or plan to use humour with their children and believe that it has more potential benefit than harm,&nbsp;

Among the children who grew up with humourous parents, 50.5% said they had a good relationship with them, and 44.2% reported they felt their parents did a good job raising them, said ScienceDaily in a report on the study.&nbsp;

"To reduce anger, it is better to engage in activities that decrease arousal levels," Bushman said. "Despite what popular wisdom may suggest, even going for a run is not an effective strategy because it increases arousal levels and ends up being counterproductive."

Inspired by the "rage rooms" to pursue this study, first author Sophie Kjærvik, a communication scientist at Virginia Commonwealth University, wanted to debunk the theory of expressing anger to cope with it.

"We wanted to show that reducing arousal, and actually the physiological aspect of it, is really important," explained Kjærvik.&nbsp;

The team also focused on the cognitive aspects, examining cognitive behavioural therapy, which can be one way of defusing rage. However, they may not be effective for everyone.

"It was really interesting to see that progressive muscle relaxation and just relaxation in general might be as effective as approaches such as mindfulness and meditation," Kjærvik said.

It was discovered that arousal-boosting activities did not reduce anger, while some, like jogging, even increased it. Researchers suggest exertion may be more beneficial if the activity is fun like ball sports.

"It's really a battle because angry people want to vent, but our research shows that any good feeling we get from venting actually reinforces aggression," said Bushman.

While further study is needed to confirm these findings, researchers recommended calming techniques to be the best option to tone down temper.

The biggest concern is that mental health has become such an issue it has huge implications for national productivity and economic stability. There is a growing demand for health insurance policies that would cover physical and mental health.

The prohibitive costs of medications and therapies keep many from wanting to report mental health conditions.&nbsp;

Divya Mohindroo, a counselling psychologist, said there is an imminent need for comprehensive policies regarding mental health in India. She further added that the country also needs to increase its workforce in this sector to match the rising demand for services.

"Out of an estimated 150 million people needing mental health services, only fewer than 30 million seek help," Mohindroo told IANS.

"Lack of mental health professionals is crippling in India, with merely 0.3 psychiatrists, 0.07 psychologists, and 0.07 social workers available per 100,000 people," she added.

"There should be specific measures for mental health, and we are hopeful the Budget will prioritise this urgent issue. There is an immediate need to strengthen India's mental health workforce, with just one psychiatrist per two lakh people," Mohindroo said.

She also suggested "scholarships to train professionals to help reduce this gap".

A related key recommendation by experts is that mental health services be brought within the ambit of health insurance coverage. According to experts, this would make care more accessible and affordable for people.

"While government centres receive some relief, private practitioners are left burdened. Extending tax benefits to private practitioners is crucial, given the high operational costs for the average therapist. In addition to acknowledging the financial difficulties experienced by private practitioners, this change would help lower the cost and increase public accessibility to mental health care," Kapoor said.

"This will help our citizens access mental healthcare without burdening them financially," added Mohindroo.

As a result, there can be difficult or toxic experiences that users of online dating can be vulnerable to."&nbsp;

Another downside associated with the excessive use of dating apps is 'dating app burnout'. A recent survey revealed that on average a user spends 51 minutes on dating apps. Men spend less than 49 minutes a day while women spend around 52 minutes daily.&nbsp;

Scrolling mindlessly on dating platforms can be mentally exhausting. There is always pressure from within to appear 'interesting' to all your potential matches. One chatbot that seeks to help people in crisis is called Woebot. It has been developed by Alison Darcy, a research psychologist and entrepreneur with a background in coding and therapy.

However, as with any technology, Woebot is not foolproof. When CBS News tested it out, the chatbot failed to recognise suicidal thoughts but picked on them when exaggerated a bit.

The app has been available for use since 2017, but its access is limited to an employer benefit plan or access from a health professional. It is also available for use free of cost at Virtua Health, a non-profit healthcare company in New Jersey.

In a conversation with CBS News, Darcy stated that with the app, she was seeking to "modernise psychotherapy".

The chatbot therapist has been trained on large amounts of specialised data to help the AI recognise words, phrases, and emojis associated with dysfunctional thoughts. After recognising these "dysfunctional thoughts," the chatbot acting like a cognitive behavioural therapy – or CBT practitioner challenges them.&nbsp;
