Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, on Saturday (Oct 21), said that the international community must sidestep an intensification of the conflict between Israel and Hamas and develop a roadmap towards the two-state solution.

She made the remarks during her address at the Cairo International Summit for Peace in the Middle East.

"Although our starting points are far apart, our interests overlap perfectly: that what is happening in Gaza does not become a much wider conflict, a religious war, a clash of civilisations," Meloni said speaking in Italian.

"I have the impression that this was the real aim of the Hamas attack, not to defend the rights of the Palestinian people, but an attack that would create an unbridgeable gap between the Palestinians and the Israelis, meaning that the target is all of us, and we cannot fall into this trap, which would be very stupid."

The Italian prime minister met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo and travelled to Tel Aviv to meet her Israeli counterpart&nbsp;Benjamin Netanyahu.

During her conversation with Abbas, the two leaders raised concerns about the need to make efforts for a de-escalation of the war between Israel and Hams and for a two-state solution, referring to the idea of establishing two separate and independent states, one for Israelis and one for Palestinians.

"I hope that there is a responsibility on the part of the whole international community, and it seems to me that there is, to speed up this process and provide a structural solution to the conflict," Meloni said.

"We meet in the heart of a region that is reeling in pain and one step from the precipice," he told the meeting that included the leaders of Egypt, Iraq, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates as well as of Italy, Spain and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.

"Leaving the Silk Road does not compromise relations, but the decision still has to be taken," the prime minister assured.

However, one last attempt was made by Li Qiang in order to prompt the Italian authorities to think their plan over again.

It is pertinent to note that Italy was the only G7 country to have signed up for the BRI, a global trade and infrastructure plan modelled on the old Silk Road that linked imperial China and the West.

At the conference, PM Meloni also talked about Africa and said that the country was central to the work of the G20. "We also consider this to be our success. Africa will also be one of the central issues that we will bring to the G7 (under the Italian presidency) next year," she added according to Italian media.&nbsp;

On Friday, European People’s Party (EPP) cancelled a planned event in Naples after former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi criticised Ukraine. Days after which EPP President Manfred Weber, in a tweet said, “Following the remarks by Silvio Berlusconi on Ukraine we decided to cancel our study days in Naples. Meloni joined outgoing premier Mario Draghi for a handover ceremony at Chigi Palace, the Prime Minister’s seat in Rome.

After almost 90 minutes of private talks, the pair smiled broadly as Draghi, a former European Central Bank chief, symbolically handed over to Meloni a small bell used in cabinet debates.

In a conversation with Reuters, Fabrizio Marrazzo, leader of the Gay Party said that there are very real fears amongst the community now about the weakening of civil liberties under the new administration.

Marrazzo said, "the League and partly Brothers of Italy have in their manifestos things that are quite negative for our community, like stressing the importance of protecting only the traditional family," Reuters reported.

However, Meloni has refuted claims that her conservative party intends to challenge and repeal any current Italian laws governing same-sex relationships and abortion rights. She said, "What is there, stays there."

Marazzo also mentioned increased homophobic attacks in right-wing regions. Leader of Italy's centre-left Democratic Party (PD), Enrico Letta sought to strike a sombre note as he described far-right leader Giorgia Meloni's election as 'a sad day for Italy and Europe'

"Today is a sad day for Italy, for Europe, tough days lie ahead of us," the former Italian prime minister said during a news conference in Rome. "We fought in every way to avoid this outcome, we fought for our values and with the aim to taking Italy into the future."

The PD bagged about 19 per cent of the votes. Meanwhile, the left-leaning, unaligned 5-Star Movement bagged 15 per cent. Centrist "Action" group was able to garner just 8 per cent of votes.

Matteo Salvini's League and Silvio Berlisconi's Forza Italia are Meloni's allies. The alliance faces a lot of challanges ahaed. These include rising energy prices, Ukraine war and an economic slowdown.

Meloni's coalition government will be Italy's 68th since 1946. Italy current PM Mario Draghi will remain as caretaker PM for now and it is expected that Meloni's government will not be installed before October-end.

"This result is also a very strong incentive for all of us to keep fighting so that this election result is one that, I repeat, does not move Italy from the place where it belongs, in the heart of Europe and in the heart of the values of our republican constitution," Letta added.
