ODI World Cup 2023, ENG vs NZ: Watch Matt Henry dismisses Dawid Malan for first wicket of tournament

Daryl Mitchell’s 102 along with Matt Henry’s career-best 72 on day three of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Christchurch put New Zealand in the pole position for the first time in the match. Not only the Kiwi but also the Indian fans are keeping a close tab on this match, and considering WTC final’s spot is at stake Mitchell’s hundred came at the right time much to everyone’s delight.

Following taking the much-required 18-run lead in the first innings, seamer Blair Tickner returned with a triple strike to put the visiting team on the backfoot as Sri Lanka ended day three on 83 for three.

While the Kiwi top order didn’t leave much for Mitchell to bat alongside for, the lower order came to his rescue with each of the bowlers notching up crucial runs. The right-handed Mitchell, who tasted success on his previous England tour, found his form back and slammed a hundred at the Hagley Oval. Well-supported by seamer Matt Henry on the other end, who chipped in with an exciting 72 off 75 balls hitting ten fours and three sixes, New Zealand could take a sigh of relief as they crossed Lanka’s first innings total of 355.

With the match being evenly poised as things stand, New Zealand would like to tear into Sri Lanka’s middle order in the first session on day four to continue keeping control of the game.

Meanwhile, New Zealand is out of the race for the World Test Championship final spot, whereas, both Sri Lanka and India - who are currently facing Australia in the fourth Test in Ahmedabad, are fighting for that one remaining spot.

While India already has one foot in the finals, thanks to their star performance in the early half of the Border-Gavaskar series, they still need to punch their ticket by beating the mighty Aussies.
But if they lose or draw any of the two Tests then regardless of the result in the India-Australia game, India will anyway qualify.

Pressure mounts on New Zealand as yet another star seamer Matt Henry is ruled out of the upcoming white-ball series against Pakistan and India due to an abdominal strain. Earlier, fast bowler Adam Milne also withdrew his name from the above-mentioned series as he was under prepared following a hamstring injury. New Zealand coach, Gary Stead confirmed the news saying Henry played through the injury he suffered on the final day of the second Test against Pakistan in Karachi, which ended in a draw; describing it as ‘gutsy effort’. Although no replacement player has been announced as yet, Jacob Duffy is a potential contender to come in for Henry.

"It has been tough playing ten days essentially out of the last 12 [in Karachi] and that being full days with no weather breaks. So when you've been in the field for eight sessions in each Test match, I guess there is natural wear and tear on players," the head coach said.

"He's due to start playing for Auckland again within about a week or so," Stead said of Jamieson. "We'll make a decision a little bit closer to the time around the England test series whether that is maybe a step too far, or whether it is the right time for him to play again. "He's been out of cricket for a long time now and I think it would be silly to push too quickly and set him back again."

World Cup, 1st semi-final: Pacer Matt Henry leaves India reeling

Kraigg Brathwaite was leading a West Indies survival effort on Sunday after Tom Blundell's debut ton put New Zealand in a seemingly unbeatable position in the first Test in Wellington.

Faced with a 386-run first innings deficit, at tea on day three the West Indies had reached 107 for one with Brathwaite on 34 and Shimron Hetmyer on 27.

They still need a further 279 to make New Zealand bat again, with conditions much to the liking of the batsmen.

The wicket has browned off from the green cover on day one when the West Indies were rolled for 134 in their first innings.

Despite the Herculean task ahead to save the match, Brathwaite and his opening partner Kieran Powell were both prepared to take risks and attack the bowling.

Powell on 15 had an edge fall just short of Ross Taylor at first slip and a chip from Brathwaite on 19 fell short of Jeet Raval at short cover.

When the West Indies reached 41 after 15 overs, New Zealand's first innings destroyer Neil Wagner was brought into the attack with his short-pitched salvo.

But this time the tourists were primed to face him.

Powell smacked successive balls for six, and also took one to the helmet, in a costly spell which saw Wagner concede 25 runs in his first two overs.

Matt Henry, who bowled without reward on the first day, took the only wicket in the middle session when he had Powell caught and bowled for 40.

New Zealand had resumed the day on 447 for nine, with Blundell on 57, and as the West Indies struggled for inspiration, the nerveless debutant was ready to pounce.

He took 10 off the first over of the day from Miguel Cummins and progressed effortlessly from there.

Number 11 batsman Trent Boult assisted as he could, surviving two lbw appeals and a dropped catch as he staunchly preserved his wicket while Blundell closed in on the 100 mark.

When New Zealand eventually declared at 520-9, Blundell was not 107 off 180 deliveries while Boult had faced 60 for his 18.
