Driven by the festive season and heavy discounts, the company sold 1.53 lakh units during the month against 1.46 lakh units sold in the same month of last year.

The country`s largest car manufacturer said domestic sales in October grew by 4.5 per cent year-on-year to 1.44 lakh units from 1.38 lakh units and exports increased 5.7 per cent to 9,158 units from 8,666 units.

Passenger car sales were up by 4.4 per cent to 1.06 lakh units compared to 1.01 lakh units in October last year.

The compact car segment (new WagonR, Celerio, Ignis, Swift, Baleno and Dzire) clocked 15.9 per cent growth but mini segment (Alto, S-Presso and old WagonR) showed 13.1 per cent decline.

Utility vehicles sales (Gypsy, Ertiga, XL6, Vitara Brezza and S-Cross) grew by 11.3 per cent whereas vans (Omni and Eeco) sales fell by 26.8 per cent in October YoY.

For the April to October period, however, total sales were down by 20.3 per cent to 8.94 lakh units from 11.2 lakh in the year-ago period.

Domestic sales dipped by 21.4 per cent to 8.31 lakh units from 10.5 lakh units while export sales edged lower by 2.6 per cent to 63,069 units from 64,753 units year-on-year.

The company claims that the new launch will bring superior gear shift feel and provide a smooth driving experience.

The engine, developed in-house, uses ‘Dual Mass flywheel’ which helps to reduce engine fluctuations.&nbsp;

With 39 per cent market share, Maruti Suzuki’s Next Gen Ertiga is popular among the country's youth.

The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said on Thursday that it will phase out smaller diesel cars from its portfolio with effect from April 1, 2020.

The cars are set to get costlier with the upcoming BS-VI emission norms from April next year.

"March 31, 2020 is the last date to sell and register a BS-IV vehicle. From April 1, 2020, the company will not sell any diesel vehicle apart from 1500 cc engine. Any diesel engines below 1500 cc will not make any economic sense once BS-VI norms kick in," the company said in a statement.

The auto major currently sells various cars with diesel powertrains, including S-Cross, Ciaz, Vitara Brezza, Dzire, Baleno, and Swift. While the bigger cars are likely to continue, the carmaker is expected to pull the plug on small diesel cars in its portfolio.

MSI's recently launched refreshed Baleno is the only car which falls under sub-1500 cc category.

"We will not make diesel cars which we feel the customers will not be able to afford. It all depends on the customer, what his judgement is, what the customer will buy or not buy," MSI Chairman R C Bhargava said.

Bhargava said smaller diesel cars would become expensive and thus out of reach for entry-level customers. He added that the small car market would move towards petrol and compressed natural gas (CNG).

Adverse foreign exchange rates and commodity prices pulled down Maruti Suzuki's net profit during the fourth quarter ended March 31 by 4.6 per cent to Rs 1,796 crore in the year-on period. Total sales slipped by 0.7 per cent at 458,479 vehicles.

Currently MSI's market share hovers around 51 per cent in the domestic passenger vehicle segment.

The company currently gets nearly 30 per cent of its annual sales from diesel cars. In 2018-19, MSI sold a total of 17,53,700 units in the domestic market.

The Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) emission norms would come into force from April 1, 2020, across the country. The shift would impact diesel cars more in terms of prices with industry experts expecting the prices of such models to go up by about Rs 2 lakh.

Automobile giant Maruti Suzuki on Tuesday launched the brand new version of its budget hatchback car Alto.&nbsp;

The New Alto comes with enhanced features and upgraded design.&nbsp;

"The customers of New Alto will witness a change in price predominantly due to factors such as additional safety features, new technology and design and compliance to BSVI regulation," the official release read.&nbsp;

Enhanced design: The New Alto comes with new grille and sharp headlamps, while the newly designed bumper and side fender accentuate its looks.&nbsp;

The version comes in stylish dual tone interiors and seats. Ergonomically designed front and rear bottle holders give it an air of practicality.

Keyless entry, Smart Play Dock: The New Alto comes with a new infotainment system called Smart Play Dock. Customers can enjoy music on the Smart Play Dock with Bluetooth. The Smart Play Dock in the New Alto transforms customer’s phone into a touch interface to access calls, music, navigation and more. Customer can also experience the convenience of keyless entry.

New safety features: The New Alto now comes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake Force Distribution System (EBD). ABS will help to avoid skidding by electronically controlling braking pressure. It will also help to maintain steering control when braking on slippery surfaces or when braking hard.&nbsp;

Equity benchmarks closed in the green for the second straight session Friday as investors looked forward to the earnings season with measured optimism amid an uncertain global growth environment.

After rising over 200 points intra-day, the 30-share BSE Sensex finally settled 160.10 points, or 0.41 per cent, higher at 38,767.11, led by FMCG, auto and banking stocks. The broader NSE Nifty rose 46.75 points, or 0.40 per cent, to 11,643.45.

During the week, the Sensex fell 95.12 points or 0.24 per cent, while the Nifty shed 22.5 points or 0.19 per cent.

"General elections and upcoming Q4FY19 numbers will remain the crucial triggers for the market in the short term. On the earnings front, we expect that a low base effect, turnaround in profitability of corporate lending banks and healthy growth in earnings of energy companies are expected to largely drive aggregate Sensex earnings," said Hemang Jani, Head - Advisory, Sharekhan by BNP Paribas.

ITC was the biggest gainer in the Sensex pack, rallying 3.14 per cent. Maruti Suzuki, Axis Bank, Hero MotoCorp, Vedanta, Asian Paints, M&amp;M, HUL, Bajaj Auto and PowerGrid were among the other top gainers, rising up to 2.13 per cent.

On the other hand, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, L&amp;T, Tata Motors, IndusInd Bank, Tata Steel, HCL Tech and ONGC were among the top laggards, shedding up to 1.71 per cent.

IT bellwether Infosys ended 0.63 per cent higher, while rival TCS slipped 0.26 per cent ahead of their quarterly earnings.

Sectorally, BSE FMCG index gained the most, spurting 1.71 per cent, followed by utilities, power, auto and banking, rising up to 1.12 per cent.

Broader indices rose in line with the benchmarks. The BSE Midcap index gained 0.29 per cent, while the small-cap gauge ended 0.37 per cent higher.

According to Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, market turned positive despite a weak rupee as investors remain focused on the upcoming earnings season.

"Banks outperformed as CPI inflation data (to be released later in the day) is expected to be under RBI's targeted level... Earnings season will give direction to the market while investors are also keen on the ongoing&nbsp; 
election to gain confidence," he added.

Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) net bought shares worth Rs 476.51 crore on Thursday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold equities to the tune of Rs 16.58 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed.

Global markets were mixed amid global growth concerns, which were partially offset by positive China exports data.

In Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.24 per cent, Japan's Nikkei advanced 0.73 per cent and Korea's Kospi gained 0.41 per cent. Shanghai Composite Index dipped 0.04 per cent.

In Europe, Frankfurt's DAX was up 0.63 per cent, Paris CAC 40 jumped 0.37 per cent and London's FTSE gained 0.30 per cent in early deals.

Oil benchmark Brent crude futures rose 1.07 per cent to USD 71.59 per barrel.

Meanwhile, the rupee depreciated 28 paise to 69.21 against the US dollar intra-day.&nbsp;

The country's largest automaker, with an eye on boosting the numbers, has now launched the 2018 edition of the seven-seater at a starting price of Rs 7.44 lakh (ex-showroom).

The 2018 edition of Ertiga gets a price hike over the outgoing model but there are several new additions which seek to justify this. For starters, the car - although similar in terms of the overall silhouette – looks a lot more contemporary than the outgoing model. This is courtesy its double-barrel headlamps, chrome grille, 20-spoke alloys and waterfall-themed taillights on the outside. On the inside, the car now gets a floating infotainment screen, flat-bottomed steering wheel and promises to have more space for passengers.

Space is key in an MPV and Maruti designers say special attention was given to this aspect of the car. The new Ertiga is 99mm longer and 40mm wider&nbsp; than the older version and although the wheelbase remains the same at 2740mm, there is more space in the third row where the seats can now be individually reclined. It may still not be the best place to stretch out but it can be adequate for adults for short drives and more than enough for kids on drives of any duration. The boot space too sees a bump up to 153 litres from 135 litres in the older version.

The most notable change, however, may well be under the hood with the new Ertiga getting the same petrol option that was seen in the new Ciaz launched earlier this year.&nbsp; The 1.4-litre unit has been replaced with a 1.5-litre motor with mild-hybrid SHVS system. The company says that the car now has peak power stats of 105Ps and peak torque of 138Nm but that it does not affect fuel efficiency. The ARAI-approved figures stand at 19.34kmpl (petrol manual) and 18.69kmpl (petrol automatic).

For patrons of diesel, there is not much happening in terms of the engine with the same DDis 200, 1.3-litre turbocharged unit with SHVS mild hybrid system being carried forward. The fuel efficiency figures reportedly see a minor bump up to 25.47kmpl.

On the safety front, the car gets ABS with EBD, dual airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Hill Hold Assist. The company says 35 crash tests from different sides was performed on the car to ensure it complies with Indian safety regulations.

The new Ertiga may still not have a direct rival in the MPV segment - at its price bracket. But the launch of Mahindra Marazzo and the ever-growing popularity of five-seater compact SUVs will remain a factor that could define how much success Maruti’s new car achieves.

Market sentiments were further dampened on unabated foreign fund outflows and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) downgrading outlook for world economy to 3.7 growth on Tuesday.

The Indian currency collapsed to a new lifetime low of 74.27 in intra-day trade, raising concerns on the macroeconomic front.

A mixed trend at other Asian markets and a lower opening in the eurozone too triggered selling on the domestic bourses here.

The 30-share Sensex opened higher at 34,651.82 points but slipped into the negative zone to hit a low of 34,233.50 before concluding at 34,299.47, recording a fall of 174.91 points, or 0.51 per cent.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty after shuttling between 10,397.60 and 10,279.35 points, ended 47 points, or 0.45 per cent, lower at 10,301.05.

Selling was more pronounced in consumer durables, auto, oil and gas, FMCG, realty, PSU and banking stocks that dragged the indices into the negative zone.

Among Sensex constituents, Tata Motors was the worst hit, plunging 13.40 per cent to end at multi-year low of Rs 184.25, after the company-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) reported 12.3 per cent decline in global sales in September.

Other laggards include Asian Paints falling 3.95 per cent, Maruti Suzuki 3.07 per cent, HUL 2.73 per cent, Bharti Airtel 2.29 per cent, Bajaj Auto 1.85 per cent, ITC 1.81 per cent, RIL 1.58 per cent, ICICI Bank 1.50 per cent, M&amp;M 1.36 per cent, SBI 1.26 per cent, NTPC 1.22 per cent, Axis Bank 0.67 per cent and HDFC Bank 0.17 per cent.

In contrast, Adani Ports emerged as the top gainer by rising 4.52 per cent, followed by HDFC falling 2.59 per cent.

Vedanta, Tata Steel, Coal india, Yes Bank, Sun Pharma, Wipro, TCS, L&amp;T, Infosys, IndusInd Bank and Kotak Bank too showed strength, gaining up to 2.44 per cent.

Shares of oil marketing companies such as HPCL, BPCL and IOC were down up to 4.20 per cent as global crude oil prices again rose on reports of decline in crude export from Iran.

Sectorally, the BSE consumer durables index emerged worst performer by falling 3.91 per cent, followed by auto at 2.62 per cent, oil and gas 1.92 per cent, FMCG 1.68 per cent, PSU 1.19 per cent, realty 1.06 per cent, power 0.62 per cent, bankex 0.47 per cent, infrastructure 0.41 per cent, capital goods 0.25 per cent.

However, metal, healthcare, teck and IT indices managed to close in the positive zone by rising up to 1.01 per cent.

Elsewhere in rest of Asia, Japan's NIkkei fell 1.32 per cent, Straight Time shed 0.49 per cent, while Shanghai rose 0.17 per cent.

Nifty, Sensex at lowest close since April

Hyundai Santro has undoubtedly been one of the perfect family car for the middle-class families.&nbsp;

It will utilise a retuned version of the i10&rsquo;s 1,086 cc petrol engine producing around 70 bhp and 100 Nm.&nbsp;

The hatchback will debut the company&rsquo;s first AMT gearbox, a 5-speed unit and will come with a digital-analogue instrument console, a touchscreen infotainment system and one airbag for the driver&#39;s side.&nbsp;

Hyundai is targetting Tata Tiago and Maruti Celerio buyers with the launch of new Santro.&nbsp;

While still retaining some of the inherent genetics of the outgoing model, the new car gets a single-aperture front grille, sharp DRL LED headlights, floating roof line, pillar-mounted rear door handles and LED tail lights.

Engine: The engine options in the Swift remain the same - K12 VVT petrol engine and the DDiS peppy diesel engine. These have been much liked by the Indian car-buying audience over the years and Maruti Suzuki has not tinkered much with it. The tuning in the new model though has been done in a way that there is a marginal increase in fuel efficiency while the lighter body also contributes to a 10 per cent rise in 0-100kmph figures.

Automatic options: There has been a growing demand for auto transmission option in the Vitara Brezza. And while Maruti Suzuki have yet not confirmed if that is a possibility in the near future, the new Swift does get the AGS option in both petrol and diesel. That is the biggest hit that the new car has on offer as a small hatch with a peppy engine and now with auto transmission can be a resounding success in city driving conditions.

Dimensions: The Swift is based on Maruti Suzuki&#39;s 5th generation HEARTECT platform. It is lighter, wider, and gets a longer wheelbase. In terms of numbers, this means weight reduction of 85 kilos, an increase in wheelbase by 20mm, an increase in width of 40mm and a boot which at 58 litres is 28 per cent bigger than the outgoing model. There is more legroom at the front and at the back and more shoulder room at the rear.

Safety: For the first time in a Swift, ABS, EBD, dual airbags and child seat restraints come as standard across variants.

The sharp LED front lights which add so much character to the front profile in the manual top-end is missing in the auto option. The car also gets silver-cut alloys instead of diamond-cut alloys in the auto variants. While still decent to look at, the diamond-cut alloys are leagues ahead in terms of visual appeal. Inside, the auto variants also do not get the infotainment systems.

No 1-litre boosterjet engine: The European version of the car gets a sportier Swift while auto enthusiasts in India will have to just wait with envious patience. While the existing engines do their job relatively well, those looking at a more hands-on feel of a drive may just look elsewhere - Baleno RS, perhaps?

Controls on driver side: The controls for lock/unlock, power windows and ORVM adjustment on the driver side remain as they were and look quite plain - especially considering the cabin and dash layout in the new Swift. Upgrading the switches could have worked well with the overall thematics.

Maruti Suzuki 2018 Swift, first drive: The big hits and misses

India&#39;s leading car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki unveiled its latest generation model of its hottest selling hatchback car in the country, Swift.

It is scheduled for a launch in the 2018 Auto Expo, next month.

The new Swift is based on the company&#39;s 5th-gen HEARTECT platform that also underpins the other two popular outgoing models Baleno and the new Dzire, launched in 2017.&nbsp;

The all-new design is wider, compact and with longer wheelbase allowing more cabin space, headroom as well as luggage space.

It gets a set of newly designed sweptback headlamps that come with LED daytime running lights (DRL) along with a new bumper.

The petrol version is powered by the 1.2-litre K-series engine which delivers 83PS at 6,000rpm and a peak torque of 113Nm at 4,200rpm.&nbsp;

Propelling the diesel variants is the successful Fiat&#39;s 1.3-litre Multijet engine that produces 190Nm of torque at just 2,000rpm while offering a power output of 75PS at 4,000rpm.&nbsp;

Both the engines come mated to a five-speed gearbox with the AMT option available in the selected variants only.

Inside the cabin, the 2018 Swift gets a new flat-bottom steering wheel and twin-pod instrument cluster.&nbsp;

It also gets a touchscreen infotainment system which is now becoming a norm in top-end Maruti Suzuki cars. The system also supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.&nbsp;

The new Swift will be available in 12 variant options, starting with the LXi/LDi trims while the top-end trims will be ZXi/ZDi.

While the dealers across the country have already started its bookings for a token amount of just Rs 11,000, the car is expected to hit the market by the end of February or the start of March 2018.

Q: Congratulations for coming up with the Concept Future-S, so when can we expect the model to be on sale?

Ans: Thank you, well I must tell you, worldwide this same principle is followed. First, the concept car is launched then the feedback from the customer is sought and then the working model is put in place. We have already initiated the process...

The idea of doing this was that customer preference is moving towards SUVs and SUV-like models. It is a revolutionary concept, for the first time in a sub-compact category we are giving SUV-like features.

Q: What about the competition?

Ans: A leader has multiple responsibilities, one of them is to expand the market and the other is to raise the bar - we have nobody else to look up to since we are the leader, we continuously seek to lead and have a customer-centric approach.

We are not driven by competition, we are driven by the customers. India is a young country and it has many aspirations, so we have to keep the interest of the youth in mind.

Q: What kind of business do you think the&nbsp;Future-S will be able to generate?

A: It is too early to predict at this stage but I am sure it will become a category leader and create excitement in the market...

Q: What about mileage and price, since India is a very price conscious market...&nbsp;

A: It is in Maruti&#39;s DNA to produce products keeping the customers in mind, we produce fuel-efficient cars at a price which is very comfortably priced and we will continue to move in that direction.

Q: It is also believed that it may cost more, is it true?

A: It is too premature to talk about the price. However, our intent is to keep it competitive&nbsp;

Q: Are there any chances that the design may change?

A: There would certainly be some design refinements since it would be&nbsp;based on customer feedback.

Country&#39;s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Wednesday said it has increased prices of its models by up to Rs 17,000 in order to partially offset rise in input costs.

In a regulatory filing, it said the hike will range between Rs 1,700 and Rs 17,000 across models owing to increase in commodity, administrative and distribution costs.

MSI sells a range of models starting with hatchback Alto 800 to premium crossover S-Cross, priced between Rs 2.45 lakh and Rs 11.29 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The company had said last month that it will take a price increase from this month. Maruti recently entered the club of top-five most valued companies list

Tata Motors has already increased prices of its vehicles by up to Rs 25,000 from January 1.

Various automakers including, Hyundai Motor India, Honda Cars, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra have already announced to increase prices from this month.

These companies are however yet to announce price increase for their respective vehicles.

The broad-based NSE Nifty too was up 30.30 points, or 0.28 per cent, at 10,508.20.

Power Grid, Tata Steel, L&amp;T, Adani Ports, Axis Bank, SBI, NTPC, Asian Paint, HDFC Ltd, Hero MotoCorp, ITC Ltd, Sun Pharma, Maruti Suzuki, TCS and Reliance Industries were major gainers, which supported the indices.

Shares of Reliance Communications continued their upward march for yet another session, soaring 19.51 per cent to Rs 37 after reports that Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio will acquire mobile business assets including spectrum, mobile towers and optical fibre network of Reliance Communications.

Globally, Hong Kong&#39;s Hang Seng rose 0.42 per cent while Japan&#39;s Nikkei up 0.25 per cent in early trade. Shanghai-traded too gained 0.16 per cent.

But is the auto industry prepared for the change? One of India&#39;s biggest automaker Maruti Suzuki India reveals its plans to go fully electric.

&quot;We remains committed to electric vehicles, but we don&rsquo;t have the technology yet to make the batteries in India,&quot; Maruti Suzuki India Chairman RC Bhargava said on Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference, Bhargava said, &quot;The electric vehicles is the most viable option as far as reducing the emissions is concerned, but making the batteries remains a challenge. Maruti has a plant in Gujarat where batteries are being made but to meet the target of EVs that the government has planned is a difficult task. The government plans to have 40% of the cars to be EVs. Now that is a very stiff target to achieve as far as production of batteries is concerned.&quot;

He agreed with the fact that dependence on oil needs to be reduced but the material used to make these batteries - lithium and cobalt - has to be imported. &quot;That will make us dependent on the countries which produce these materials,&quot; Bhargava said. &quot;And even if the supply side is sorted, question still remains about the infrastructure to have enough charging ports around to make it viable for customers to use EVs.&quot;

India has millions of cars and growing annually at a rate of nearly 10 per cent. Many activists have raised concerns about rising number of cars and the government has pushed for adoption a more cleaner mode of transport - electric vehicles. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) recently banned diesel vehicles of more than 2000cc in Delhi and areas around the national capital after the air quality levels plunged to the lowest levels.

&quot;Everything is at discussion level. Companies have been investing in R&amp;D to make EVs feasible. According to me, there is no point in making a vehicle if we can&rsquo;t sell it. We have to keep our customers in the centre,&quot; said Bhargava.

However, he assured that Maruti will come up with its first EV by 2020.

Maruti is ready to invest and assist in the R&amp;D of electric vehicles but making such vehicles for Indian market is not going to happen soon, he added. &quot;We plan to launch a countrywide survey to get feedback from customers about their requirements which will be completed by February next year. Maruti Suzuki India&#39;s shares on Wednesday rose by over five per cent, helping the auto major break into the top-five league of most valuable companies with a market valuation of Rs 2.96 lakh crore.

The scrip gained 5.33 per cent to settle at Rs 9,804.50 on BSE. During the day, it jumped 5.87 per cent to Rs 9,855.

On NSE, shares of the company were up 5.28 per cent to close at Rs 9,801.50.

The company&#39;s market valuation surged Rs 14,997.39 crore to Rs 2,96,174.39 crore.

Led by the surge in its market capitalisation (m-cap), the company entered the club of top-five most valued companies list.

RIL is the country&#39;s most valued firm with a m-cap of Rs 5,85,215.73 crore followed by TCS (Rs 4,92,938.63 crore), HDFC Bank (Rs 4,87,888.91 crore) and ITC (Rs 3,22,499.99 crore).

So far this year, the carmaker&#39;s stock has zoomed over 84 per cent or 4,481.5 points.

Meanwhile, strong buying was seen in other auto stocks also, with Hero MotoCorp rising 4.70 per cent, Motherson Sumi Systems (3.47 per cent), Tata Motors (3.39 per cent), Ashok Leyland (3.33 per cent) and Bharat Forge (3.20 per cent).

The BSE auto index gained 3.42 per cent to settle at 26,742.51.

India&#39;s pocket-friendly car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has issued a recall of the Dzire 2017 compact sedan over a rear wheel hub.

The recall affects over 21,494 units of the sold car which were manufactured between February 23 to July 10 this year.

The car major is undertaking a service campaign wherein the cars with the mentioned faulty part will be fixed without any cost to the customer.&nbsp;

&quot;Starting October 3, 2017, owners of the vehicles included in this service campaign will be contacted by dealers for inspection and replacement of the faulty part,&quot; said the notice on Maruti Suzuki.&nbsp;

The owners can also check if their cars are affected or not by entering the car&#39;s Vehicle Identification Number on the website.

In October, the all-new version of Dzire crossed one lakh unit sales milestone in just five-and-a-half months of its launch.

Launched in May this year, the all-new Dzire is based on the new-gen Swift hatchback with new exterior and interior design.

Japan&#39;s Nikkei was up 1.22 per cent while Hong Kong&#39;s Hang Seng rose 0.57 per cent in early trade today. Shanghai Composite, however, shed 0.08 per cent.

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.29 per cent higher in yesterday&#39;s trade.&nbsp;

Major gainers were Tata Steel, L&amp;T, Hero MotoCorp, Adani Ports, Bajaj Auto, Maruti Suzuki, Hindustan Unilever, Bharti Airtel, NTPC, Power Grid, Axis Bank, SBI, and ICICI Bank, rising up to 1.32 per cent.&nbsp;Brokers said buying by Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) and a firm trend in other Asian bourses improved the market sentiment.
