The study published in the journal Lancet Psychiatry on Monday claimed that those who use higher-potency cannabis are more likely to get addicted and face mental health issues than those who use lower-potency products—typically 5 to 10 milligrams per gram of THC.

"One of the highest quality studies included in our publication found that use of high potency cannabis, compared to low potency cannabis, was linked to a four-fold increased risk of addiction," study co-author Tom Freeman, a senior lecturer in the department of psychology and director of&nbsp;the addiction and mental health group at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom, in an email told the CNN.

The research further found that as marijuana became more potent, cases of marijuana-associated psychosis also saw a spike.

Psychosis is a state of mind where it "loses contact with reality" by hearing voices and having delusions, Freeman said.

"A report by the United Nations found that in the past two decades, the proportion of people seeking treatment for cannabis addiction has risen in all world regions apart from Africa," he said.

"The evidence linking cannabis potency to addiction and psychosis was very clear," he was quoted as saying.

There was a 76 per cent rise in people entering treatment for cannabis addiction over the past decade, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction found.

And the "cannabis potency continued to rise during the same time," Freeman said citing the findings.

In the research, scientists established a “standard THC unit" of 5 milligrams that is said to produce mild intoxication for nonregular users.

Freeman and his team at the University of Bath said that in a gram of herbal cannabis—the dried and harvested tops of marijuana plants —THC concentrations increased by approximately 2.9 milligrams each year.

The Democrats' Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act would remove its categorization alongside heroin and cocaine as a dangerous controlled narcotic under federal laws mandating tough sentences.

The bill was cleared by 220 votes to 204. Three Republicans crossed the aisle.

However, the bill is likely to have a tough time in Senate where Democrats would need 10 opposition lawmakers to support them.

The US government is out of line with three-quarters of states that have legalized marijuana for medical use and a third of states, like Colorado and Washington, that have freed it for recreational use, too.

"If states are the laboratories of democracy, it is long past time for the federal government to recognize that this experiment in legalization has been a resounding success," House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, one of the bill's sponsors, said.

Cannabis is one of the fastest-growing industries in the United States, with sales hitting $25 billion in 2021, according to influential cannabis website Leafly, and projected to reach $40.5 billion by 2025.

A report released in February by the Seattle-based company said the legalized cannabis industry provides work for more than 400,000 Americans and created some 280 new jobs a day last year.

California, the first state to legalize medical marijuana in 1996, made $1 billion in tax revenue in the first two years after expanding to full recreational use in 2018.

But it remains illegal under federal law, posing significant hurdles for businesses that find themselves barred from accessing financial services and unable to secure loans or open bank accounts.

Smoking, marijuana may increase risk of breakthrough COVID-19 infection: Study

Researchers have revealed preliminary evidence that using smartphone sensors, it is feasible to detect if someone is high on cannabis.

The method uses information from the owner's smartphone to determine whether they are inebriated after taking cannabis. 
 
The study was based on a survey of 57 young individuals aged 18 to 25 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

The subjects said they used cannabis at least twice a week, and the researchers examined data from their phones to determine if that was enough to figure out when they used it.&nbsp;

“A smartphone sensor, much like what is used in GPS systems, might be a way to determine whether or not someone is intoxicated after consuming marijuana,” notes a study write-up posted on Rutgers Today.

In order to detect intoxication, the accelerometer - the phone's motion sensor – and GPS data were crucial.

The study was able to correctly identify 60 percent of the 451 cannabis usage episodes using only time factors such as day of the week and time of day.

When time features and smartphone sensor data were included in the analysis, the accuracy increased to 90%.&nbsp;

Intoxication with cannabis has been linked to decreased response times, which can influence performance at work or school, as well as altering driving behaviour, which can lead to injuries or fatalities.

Existing screening methods, such as blood, urine, and saliva tests, have limitations as indications of cannabis intoxication and impairment in daily life.

A research study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal has claimed that adults under 45 years old who consumed cannabis within the last 30 days suffered from nearly double the number of heart attacks than the adults who didn’t smoke up.

The researchers also discovered that consuming cannabis in other ways was also linked to an elevated risk of heart attacks.

“Additionally, this association was consistent across different forms of cannabis consumption, including smoking, vaporization, and other methods such as edibles," study co-author Dr Karim Ladha, clinician-scientist and staff anesthesiologist at St. Michael's Hospital and the University of Toronto in Canada, said in a statement.

"This suggests that no method of consumption is safer than another in this regard,” he said.

The researchers analysed health data from over 33,000 adults ages 18 to 44 who were part of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention surveys in 2017 and 2018.

Of the 17 per cent of adults who reported using cannabis within the previous month, 1.3 per cent later had a heart attack while only 0.8per cent of non-cannabis users reported the same.

“Some people assume that consuming cannabis is safe and can’t harm your body, but that is incorrect," Ladha later told CNN.

“There’s increasing evidence that this could potentially be harmful to you, both in the short term and the long term,” he said.

Once active, the country would move a step closer to creating one of the world’s largest legal markets for the misunderstood plant.

The bill to approve legalisation has languished in Mexican Congress after undergoing a few modifications and with this Supreme Court ruling, it could be fast-forwarded.

The law is backed by the current administration of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, and would mark a major shift in Mexico where drug cartels dictate the trade.

Once completely legalised, a huge market would open up for the US and Canada.

"A historic day for freedoms… The right to free development of the personality is consolidated in the case of recreational or recreational use of marijuana”, Mexican Supreme Court Judge Arturo Zaldivar Lelo de Larrea wrote on Twitter.&nbsp;

Monday’s declaration removes a legal obstacle which prevented the health ministry from authorising activities related to the consumption of marijuana for recreational purposes, as per the court statement.

The ruling marked the final step in a long court procedure aimed at declaring a prohibition on non-medical use of marijuana and its main ingredient THC as unconstitutional.&nbsp;

Marijuana is still not legal in Mexico. The court’s order simply means that anybody seeking permit to consume the plant legally may be allowed to, in addition to&nbsp;growing their own cannabis at home. Naturally, certain restrictions would be put in place.

Activists have urged authorities to only allow recreational use among people aged 18 and above.

The law is set to end an era of disproportionate convictions for marijuana possession against communities of color and pave the way for low-income residents to participate in the cannabis marketplace, injecting fresh revenue into the state’s economy and social welfare programs.

The legislation will take effect July 1, at which point using recreational marijuana will be legal in Connecticut. Adults 21 and older can possess up to 1.5 ounces of marijuana, and legal sales can start in May. Half of all state licenses to grow and sell marijuana will be issued to low-income applicants.

People will also be allowed to grow up to three mature plants and three immature plants for personal use starting July 2023.

A study by the University of Connecticut found that the marijuana industry could generate between $784 million and $952 million in revenue in the state over five years. That would be enough to help jump-start the state’s economic recovery from the pandemic, the study’s authors said.

Tuesday’s signing marks an end to years of failed efforts to legalise the drug after the state approved it for medical use in 2012. Years later, dispensaries were still fighting to open for business.

People of color have been disproportionately penalized for marijuana possession in Connecticut, which decriminalized the possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana in 2011. Alabama would possibly become&nbsp;the latest US state to legalise&nbsp;marijuana as the state legislature voted in its favour late on Thursday.&nbsp;

The House version of SB 46 approved the bill 68-34 in the chamber with bipartisan support on Thursday after a vote had been blocked by Republicans during a nearly nine-hour debate in the chamber late on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The Senate gave its approval on amendments to the legislation made by the house by a 20-9 vote.&nbsp;

To celebrate 4/20, the marijuana advocates AIDS coalition Act Up NY decided to use this celebration to bring focus on the importance of getting vaccinated against the coronavirus pandemic.

Keeping this in mind, the group organised a 'joints for jabs' camp in which they handed marijuana joints to anyone who was getting vaccinated. The event took place at Union Square in New York City, New York.

"The marijuana community supports the science behind the COVID vaccine and what better way to encourage cannabis users to get vaccinated than to give out free pot," activist Dana Beal said in a statement.

While the event concluded at 4:20 pm local time, Twitter took over the event and shared pictures, videos, and memes till days.

The economic contributions of the cannabis sector are strong and growing. Among the findings of the report, marijuana excise taxes are the fastest-growing component of the Washington state’s general and selective sales tax revenue streams.

Here are the major study findings:

1. In 2020 the Washington cannabis sector contributed $1.85 billion to gross state product.

2. The sector, directly and indirectly, supported nearly 18,700 full-time equivalent jobs.

3. Retail cannabis sales grew 21% between 2019 and 2020 and grew 605% between 2015 and 
2020.

4. Marijuana Excise taxes are the fastest-growing component of the state’s General &amp; Selective Sales Taxes revenues.&nbsp;

The report is the first to detail the positive economic impacts associated with the state’s newest agriculture industry. It was compiled by Washington State University's Impact Center for the Washington State Cannabis Alliance.

The new agreement will impose a 13 per cent sales tax on cannabis sales. Out of this, 9 per cent will be meant for state use, while 4 per cent would go to localities.
