- JW Anderson and clay -

The invitation to the show of fashion label JW Anderson was a block of clay, arousing the curiosity of the guests. The first models walked down the catwalk in Bermuda shorts and hoodies made from play-dough, resembling moving sculptures.

Then followed colourful ensembles from a shiny plastic material, crochet dresses and feathers worn as belts and on sleeves. Jonathan Anderson also showcased oversized bomber jackets, long enough to cover the thighs, and trenchcoats with long skirts.

"Using jackets as dresses becomes very simple," Anderson, who is also the creative director of the Spanish fashion house Loewe, explained after the show.

His show, a staple of London Fashion Week, attracted celebrities including British actresses Suki Waterhouse and Jenna Coleman as well as actor Ncuti Gatwa of the TV show Sex Education. Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour was also among the guests, sitting next to Edward Enninful, the outgoing editor-in-chief of British Vogue.

Enninful will be stepping down in January to take on a global advisor role at Vogue publisher Conde Nast.

Some of the dresses were asymmetrical, short in the front and long at the back, and were worn with tall, over-the-knee boots. Evening dresses were also at the show of designer Feben, a recent graduate of London's Central Saint Martins University.

Among her collection were largely transparent dresses made entirely of beads with long fringed skirts.

The collection of South Korean designer Eudon Choi was inspired by the works of French Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot.

Models of all ages walked the runway at his show with some of Choi's designs presented by older women. The collection, presented in the garden of a church in central London, was elegant and refined.

The designer wanted to freeze a moment in time in the way Morisot, the 19th-century artist, had done in her paintings. The looks were often monochrome with a neutral colour palette.

The tones evolved from a soft powder pink to anthracite grey.&nbsp;With the colours, the outfits transitioned from daytime to evening wear, combining transparent and opaque fabrics.&nbsp;Choi also used floral patterns and the contrast of black and white.

Roksanda Ilincic, the founder of fashion brand Roksanda, was inspired by the monasteries of her native Serbia. Tall headdresses worn by models at her show resembled those worn by Orthodox priests.&nbsp; The straight, almost austere lines of some pieces were countered by a vibrant pop of colour or heels with tassels.&nbsp;

Silk dresses and capes were accessorised with large jewellery items, which blended in to become part of the garment.&nbsp;The silhouettes were sometimes straight and narrow, sometimes fluid and moving, sometimes imposing and rigid.

- Labrum, 'designed by an immigrant' -

British label Labrum's collection was inspired by a nomoli, a figurine from Sierra Leone, where founder and creative director Foday Dumbuya was born. The winner of this year's prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design opened his show with ex-footballer Ian Wright walking the runway in a double-breasted suit and Adidas Samba sneakers.

The collection continued mixing casual and formal elements, with designs featuring mixed textiles and high-contrast patterns. Male and female models walked to music by singer-songwriter Tawiah, with piano accompaniment.

Dumbuya chose the Four Seasons as his venue to bring the people of Brixton "into a world where they think they don't belong", he told AFP. "The story I'm telling is about population movements, migration," added the designer, whose brand is known for the unofficial slogan "designed by an immigrant".

Vogue World 2023: Jodie Turner-Smith turns heads with her butt-bearing outfit

The '90s are back! The iconic supermodels of the '90s- Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell - reunited on the ramp on Thursday for a Vogue World event in London. The show kicked off London Fashion week. 
 
The four supermodels closed the show and walked down the ramp hand-in-hand as they did a lap around the Theatre Royal Drury Lane as Annie Lennox performed a 'Sweet Dreams' medley in the background.&nbsp; 
 
Cambell wore a forest green dress with cutouts, while Crawford, Turlington and Evangelista all chose metallic shades for their dresses. They were greeted with thunderous applause from the audience and came back on stage after their lap and were greeted with bouquets of red roses and cheers. 
 
The four models' appearance on the ramp comes weeks after they posed on the cover of Vogue's September issue, also known as the fashion issue each year.

On the final day, Tuesday, Ukrainian designers will present their collections, with London once again hosting Ukrainian Fashion Week due to Russia's invasion.

"The audit is long overdue and marks the first step towards the vital measurement of the UK fashion industry's collective progress towards the goal of fair representation," the BFC said. The results will be announced later this year.&nbsp;

Another must-see fashion event in London is the exhibition "Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto", which opens on Saturday at the V&amp;A museum. It retraces the 60-year career of "Coco" Chanel, featuring some of her greatest creations that revolutionised women's wardrobes.

Britain will hold a minute's silence on Sunday at 1900 GMT and LFW plans to take part.

The queen, seen as a fashion icon during her 70 years on the throne, launched the QEII Award for British Design at LFW in 2018, presenting Richard Quinn with the inaugural award.

With parties postponed, this season's London event will focus on the business side of securing orders for the clothes featured on the runway for next spring.

Shows that had been scheduled for Monday, when Britain will hold a state funeral for the late queen, have, where possible, been postponed until Tuesday.

"The restart of activity worldwide in 2021 and the increased demand from the textile industry have accelerated the mechanism of (market) tension on raw materials," it added.

"This has resulted in a shortage, and rising material costs."

Cotton, which had already surged almost 50 percent last year, peaked earlier this month at $1.29 per pound -- reaching a level last seen in 2011.

Organic cotton from key producer India has experienced buoyant demand due to low stockpiles.

The cost of wool and flax linen meanwhile rebounded between September 2020 and June 2021, having declined for almost three years.

Textiles also face the same snarled-up supply chains that have plagued economies worldwide.

Retailers and manufacturers will therefore struggle to meet rebounding demand, particularly for cotton, commentators say.

"Demand is strong amid inflation concerns and logistical issues that make it harder for world buyers to source any cotton anywhere," Price Group analyst Jack Scoville told AFP.

Importers and exporters face a huge spike in transport costs, as reopening economies create feverish demand for container shipping.

Rogie Sussman Faber, owner of Chicago area company Vogue Fabrics, told AFP that transportation was their biggest issue.

"Here in the USA, we are more affected by the sharp rise in shipping than the price of the materials," Faber said.

Textiles fan inflation fears amid London Fashion Week

Fashionistas braved gale-force winds in London on Friday to attend the first Fashion Week shows, with a schedule dominated by up-and-coming young designers.

Gusts ripped through the streets of the British capital as crowds, wrapped up in coats and hats, flocked to the week's first live shows with attendees, which make up about half of the five-day event's timetable.&nbsp;

It kicked off with the sustainable label SOHUMAN, created by Spaniard Javier Aparici, who promises "radical transparency" on the factories used to make his garments.

He showed an ultra-feminine collection of cocktail dresses in red and black featuring applique flowers, sheer panels and giant bows.&nbsp;

Young British designers then came under the spotlight, with Saul Nash showcasing a relaxed but luxurious streetwear collection of merino wool tracksuits, hoodies, puffer coats and scarves, many emblazoned with his Saul logo.&nbsp;

With a background in dance and performance, Nash graduated from the Royal College of Art in menswear in 2018.&nbsp;

Another British brand, Poster Girl, known for ultra-revealing cutaway shapewear-style dresses worn by celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Dua Lipa, held its first catwalk show with an apres-ski theme.

Poster Girl designers Francesca Capper and Natasha Somerville, who studied at the prestigious Central Saint Martins fashion college, showed their neon-hued creations in a freezing building due for demolition.

Models in tube dresses and leggings wrapped up in fake fur coats and puffer jackets. There was even a ski suit, accessorised with bright pink high heeled sandals. Fans took pictures on their phones and whistled in approval.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Brands missing -

S.S. Daley, a brand based in Liverpool in northwest England recently founded by Steven Stokey Daley, went for classic unisex tailoring, featuring wide baggy trousers and Sherlock Holmes-style checked overcoats.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Matty Bovan, another northern designer from the city of York, showed an Americana-themed collection with models wearing eccentric assemblages melding baseball jackets, gingham, denim and colourful crochet.&nbsp;

The spring/summer 2020 line also had dabs of denim that came in the shape of a V-neck jacket with puffed-up sleeves and a long dress with floral decorations. 
Goddard put bows on her knitwear - on sleeves of jumpers and at the front of a cardigan. 
 
Footwear consisted of colourful flat boots in black, red and sky blue as well as slip-on peep-toe sandals in similar colours, sometimes in shiny versions. 
Also on Saturday, British model Naomi Campbell led a catwalk show for her charitable Fashion for a Relief organisation, which she founded in 2005 and said this year was raising funds for children's education and skill development causes.

Several stars have donated items to the resale clothing site Vestiaire Collective, with the proceeds going to Oxfam. The initiative has more than eight million members in 50 countries.

Westwood donated a handbag, while designer Henry Holland gave some shoes.

"Buy less, choose well, make it last," said punk designer Westwood.

Actress Rachel Weisz, models Daisy Lowe and Stella Tennant have also raided their wardrobes.

"Peace of mind and a new wardrobe without the environmental damage is the dream!" said singer Paloma Faith.

Style icons slam throwaway fashion culture

London Fashion Week gets underway on Friday, launching spring/summer 2020 collections set to come out after Brexit -- a divorce bitterly opposed by the UK fashion industry.

A survey by the Fashion Roundtable consultancy found 96 percent of British fashion sector professionals backed Britain staying in the European Union in the 2016 referendum, fearing customs bureaucracy and restrictions on the movement of workers.

Attitudes have not softened in the years since.

The British Fashion Council (BFC), which promotes the industry and organises the five-day London Fashion Week (LFW), is against a no-deal Brexit on October 31 -- something Prime Minister Boris Johnson says must happen if a new deal cannot be struck with Brussels.

If business between Britain and the EU were to come under World Trade Organization rules on November 1, it would cost the fashion industry £850-900 million, according to a 2018 study by the UK Fashion and Textile Association.

The British fashion industry contributes £32 billion to the British economy and employs nearly 900,000 people, according to the BFC, claiming it was nearly as many workers as the financial sector.

In September, it urged the government to strike a divorce deal with the EU "that would guarantee the healthy and steady growth of the fashion industry".

Despite the sombre backdrop, designer Molly Goddard is set to sprinkle a little magic over the proceedings on Saturday.

The Londoner graduated from the city's prestigious Central Saint Martins arts and design school and made a name for herself be creating the pink dress worn by the murderer Villanelle in the British spy thriller television series "Killing Eve".

Other headline shows include those of Spice Girls singer-turned-designer Victoria Beckham.

Last year, the British star of the New York catwalks presented a collection in London for the first time to celebrate her label's 10th anniversary.

This year, she is launching a beauty products range.

British fashion heavyweight Burberry is set to be another highlight.

Wearing white dresses with blood-like stains, five protesters glued themselves to the entrance door of the main London Fashion Week building. 
 
Other demonstrators briefly lay on a pool of pink liquid, which they said depicted blood. The protest took place before the start of the first fashion show. 
 
"(The demonstrators) are calling for the fashion industry to tell the truth about its contribution to the climate and ecological crisis," the group said in a phone message to journalists. 
 
At a time of growing public environmental awareness, fashion brands are being urged to be more sustainable and cut waste. Queen Elizabeth makes surprise appearance at the London Fashion Week

Italy&#39;s premier fashion brand Gucci is the latest to join the fur-free campaign by banning the use of fur in its designs from next year.&nbsp;

This comes as part of a growing momentum for fashion houses to look at alternative products after coming under pressure from animal rights activists and changing consumer tastes.&nbsp;

The premier fashion house is part of Paris-based luxury group Kering which has on previous occasions, paraded models down the catwalk in luxurious fur coats. Two years ago, director Alessandro Michele brought in loafers and sling-backs lined with kangaroo-fur.&nbsp;

In a statement on Thursday, Gucci said it would now join an alliance of fur-free companies. It will become a part of Fur Free Alliance, an international group of more than 40 organisations which campaigns on animal welfare and promotes alternatives to fur in the fashion industry.

It also stated that all remaining accessories and clothing made of animal fur will be sold off in a charity auction.&nbsp;

Gucci has sold some of its mink fur coats for over&nbsp;$40,000.

Gucci&rsquo;s chief executive,&nbsp;Marco Bizzarri said that the brand&nbsp;would drop fur starting from its spring and summer 2018 collection and that its new approach had been agreed on with director Michele.

Michele has been known for his eclectic style and is credited with reviving Gucci by fuelling sales over the past two years.&nbsp;

Taking such a move while enjoying success, Gucci has surprised animal rights campaigners and they see it as a welcome news. They hope that this would have a knock-off effect which would urge other labels to stop using fur.&nbsp;

Simone Pavesi, manager of animal-free fashion at Italian campaign group LAV said,&nbsp;&ldquo;Gucci&rsquo;s decision will radically change the future of fashion. As fashion becomes more and more ethical, supply chains that revolve around animals will be a thing of the past.&rdquo;

Among other labels&nbsp;who have stopped using fur,&nbsp;Yoox Net-A-Porter -- a multi-brand online luxury retailer, adopted a fur-free policy on accessories and clothing sold on the site.

Last year,&nbsp;Italy&rsquo;s Giorgio Armani committed to stop using fur, saying technological progress meant there was no longer any justification for cruelty to animals, while US brand Calvin Klein took the plunge in 1994.

Over the last couple of years, anti-fur protesters have been seen demonstrating&nbsp;outside catwalk shows at fashion weeks around the world to call for an end to animal cruelty. This has gained worldwide attention as more and more number of luxury buyers from the younger generations are sensitised to environmental issues.&nbsp;
