"A demonstration that started tonight at 8 pm on the Coolsingel has resulted in riots. Fires have been set in several places.

Fireworks were set off and police fired several warning shots," Rotterdam police said in a statement. 
The police further said that the riot police later launched charges at the demonstrators as they said, "The water launcher has been deployed."

The Netherlands has introduced a partial lockdown to curb the spread of Covid.

Saxony, which has&nbsp;Germany's lowest vaccination rate and highest infection rate, is considering measures like closing theatres, concerts and soccer games to the public once more and shutting bars and discos, according to Bild newspaper.

The eastern&nbsp;region, where new daily infections have risen 14-fold in the past month, is a stronghold of the far-right Alternative for&nbsp;Germany (AfD) party, which harbours many vaccine sceptics who have joined anti-lockdown&nbsp;protests.

A Forsa poll published earlier this month found that half of unvaccinated respondents in&nbsp;Germany had voted for the right-wing populist AfD in the recent federal election.

"This coalition is ready to now impose a hard and clear wave breaker," Saxony leader Michael Kretschmer told the national parliament, according to Bild. The specifics would be hammered out this week, he said.

The announcement comes the same week Austria imposed a&nbsp;lockdown&nbsp;for the unvaccinated. Kretschmer said he did not believe targeting only the unvaccinated was enough.

German&nbsp;federal and&nbsp;regional leaders will later on Thursday discuss nationwide measure to tackle the pandemic as cases continue to touch new record highs although the rate of increase is slowing down slightly.

Europe's latest coronavirus wave comes at an awkward time in&nbsp;Germany with conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel acting in a caretaker capacity while three other parties negotiate to form a new government after an inconclusive September election.

Those three parties shepherded a law authorising a package of measures to tackle the pandemic through the Bundestag (lower house of parliament) earlier on Thursday. On Friday, the law, which is designed to come into effect as emergency powers expire, goes to the Bundesrat (upper house).

They would prefer to see the state of emergency, which allows the government to impose school closures and blanket&nbsp;lockdowns without consulting the parliament, to be extended. Merkel described&nbsp;Germany's&nbsp;COVID-19&nbsp;situation as dramaticon Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Monday directed the Central government to call for an "emergency meeting" on November 16 with Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh and sought an action plan to curb the air pollution in Delhi-NCR.

A Bench of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant concluded that the major culprits of air pollution in the national capital are construction activities, industries, power plants, and vehicular transportation apart from stubble burning in some areas.

Posting the matter for hearing on November 17, the top court asked Haryana and Punjab governments to persuade the farmers to stop the stubble burning for a week. Following the Supreme Court`s suggestion, schools in Delhi and Haryana have been closed and all construction activities have also been suspended.

As per local reports by the Falun-gong linked New Tang Dynasty Television, nearly 35 students were eventually taken for quarantine, while others were allowed to go back to their homes.<o:p></o:p>

The government's strategy during the first three months of the crisis reflected official scientific advice that widespread infection was inevitable given that testing capacity was limited that there was no immediate prospect for a vaccine&nbsp;and the belief that the public wouldn't accept a lengthy lockdown, the report said.

As a result, the government sought merely to manage the spread of the virus, instead of trying to stop it altogether.

Australian doctors warned a too-rapid easing of COVID-19 restrictions in Sydney could put pressure on health systems and risk lives, as the country's biggest city prepares for an end to more than 100 days in lockdown next week.

Stay-at-home restrictions are due to be lifted on Monday after New South Wales state hit a targeted 70% for full vaccination of its adult population. Authorities on Thursday bumped up permitted limits for home gatherings, weddings and funerals.

Daily infections in New South Wales rose on Friday after falling for the past seven days, as first-dose inoculations in people over 16 neared 90%. A total of 646 cases were reported, the majority in state capital Sydney, up from 587 on Thursday. Eleven new deaths were registered.

State Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said genomic sequencing has uncovered a new Delta strain in eight new cases and more tests will be conducted to trace the source.

"There is no indication that this new strain presents any differences regarding transmission, vaccine effectiveness or severity," she said.

Victoria, meanwhile, logged a record 1,838 new cases on Friday, the highest number of any state in the country since the pandemic began, exceeding the previous high of 1,763 set three days earlier. There were five new deaths.
