<p>Allies told British media that Johnson was "up for it" and that he had cut short a luxurious vacation in the Dominican Republic to enter the contest to succeed departing leader Liz Truss, which appeared to be between three candidates.</p>

<p>The divisive 58-year-old architect of Brexit only stepped down from office in early September, two months after declaring it in the wake of a Tory uprising over a number of scandals.</p>

<p>Sunak's parliamentary friends disclosed late Friday that he has obtained the 100 Conservative MP nominations required to run for office.</p>

<p>Despite rumours that Sunak was about to declare his candidacy, Johnson has also yet to confirm his candidacy.</p>

<p>Sunak is storming ahead in the contest with the backing of enough Tory MPs and if he does manage to win the contest, it would mark a huge turnaround for the MP for Richmond, North Yorks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Pitted against Truss, he was castigated by Tory MPs for being too gloomy after he warned that Liz’s promises of monster tax cuts would tank the economy and send mortgage costs soaring.</p>

<p>Besides, voters had railed against his mega wealth, as his wife is a billionaire, said to be richer than the King.&nbsp;</p>

<p>UK Home Secretary Grant Shapps has backed Sunak in the contest. Taking to his official Twitter account,&nbsp;Shapps said, "We need someone who can provide stability and proven economic competence in these challenging times, and @RishiSunak is that person."</p>

<p>"That's why I'm backing him in the Conservative leadership contest," Shapps added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Britain's former interior minister&nbsp;Suella&nbsp;Braverman also supported Sunak. Her speech has triggered a leadership race that will lead to the appointment of the UK’s fifth Conservative prime minister in just over six years.<br />

Despite the shortness of her tenure, she is entitled to receive payments under the Public Duty Costs Allowance (PDCA), a government-regulated programme introduced in 1990 to “assist former Prime Ministers still active in public life”, reports CNN.<br />
<br />
The allowance reimburses former prime ministers for office and secretarial costs arising from their public duties.<br />
<br />
“Payments are made only to meet the actual cost of continuing to fulfil public duties,” says the UK government website.&nbsp;<br />
“All former Prime Ministers are eligible to draw on the PDCA,” it adds.<br />
<br />
The PDCA has been capped at £115,000 a year since 2011 and is reviewed annually by the sitting prime minister.<br />
<br />
Former leaders are also entitled to claim an allowance toward their staff pension costs, which is limited to 10% of the PDCA.</p>

When asked about Truss’ entitlement to the allowance, Keir Starmer, leader of the opposition Labour Party, said “she should turn it down.”<br />
“She’s done 44 days in office,” he told ITV’s “Good Morning Britain” on Friday.<br />
“She’s not really entitled to it, she should turn it down and not take it.”<br />

This comes after United Kingdom Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation earlier this week after just 44 days in office.</p>

<p>According to reports, a candidate requires the support of&nbsp;100 MPs&nbsp;to be eligible for the race. However,&nbsp;the former finance minister of the UK is yet to officially announce his candidacy and only a maximum of three Tory MPs will be allowed to run given there are a total of 357 MPs in the party. According to reports, if his opponents fail to secure this minimum 100-vote nomination, Sunak will automatically become the party leader as well as the next UK PM.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Thursday, a poll by Opinium showed that UK voters would prefer Sunak and Mordaunt over Johnson as the next PM as over 40% of people voted for the former finance minister. This comes amid reports of Boris Johnson cutting short his holiday in the Caribbean and returning to UK, saying he is “up for” running for party leadership.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reports suggest that the Tory MPs will vote on Monday before a possible online ballot for party members next week. The results will be announced on October 28. A YouGov poll shows that three in five voters in Britain want an early general election while over 50% have opposed the return of former PM Johnson.&nbsp;</p>

According to reports, if his opponents fail to secure this minimum 100-vote nomination, Sunak will automatically become the party leader as well as the next UK PM. On Thursday, a poll by Opinium showed that UK voters would prefer Sunak and Mordaunt over Johnson as the next PM as over 40% of people voted for the former finance minister. This comes amid reports of Boris Johnson cutting short his holiday in the Caribbean and returning to UK, saying he is “up for” running for party leadership. Reports suggest that the Tory MPs will vote on Monday before a possible online ballot for party members next week. The results will be announced on October 28. A YouGov poll shows that three in five voters in Britain want an early general election while over 50% have opposed the return of former PM Johnson. Braverman also talked of "concerns about the direction of this government". She even accused it of breaking manifesto pledges.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Braverman's departure, the sacking of chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng last Friday and a U-turn on most economic policies now mean that the PM is barely holding on to her seat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>British newspapers directly spoke of Truss's vulnerable position, using words like "utter chaos", "more turmoil", "broken"&nbsp;and "Truss on the brink".</p>

<p>A Conservative MP, speaking to BBC, said Liz Truss's position is "wholly untenable" and she needs to stand down "today".</p>
