The state assembly in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal on Tuesday (Sep 3) passed the anti-rape bill unanimously with full support from opposition. However, the amendments proposed by the Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, were not incorporated.

The bill comes amidst uproar over the rape and murder of a trainee&nbsp;doctor in the premises of the RG Kar Medical College in the state’s capital, Kolkata. The state’s chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, has faced calls for resignation by the opposition in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The bill, titled the 'Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) Bill 2024', was tabled in the house by the state Law Minister Moloy Ghatak.

The bill seeks capital punishment for those convicted of rape and if the victim dies or ends up in a vegetative state. Moreover, it provides for a life sentence without parole for those convicted of rape.

The bill also provides for setting up fast-track courts for rape cases.

“To expedite investigations and ensure swift justice for victims, this Bill proposes dedicated special courts and investigation teams. These specialised units will be equipped with the necessary resources and expertise to handle cases of rape of women and sexual offences against children efficiently, effectively and timely, thereby minimising the trauma experienced by victims and their families,” it states.

Kolkata horror: West Bengal assembly passes anti-rape bill with full support from opposition

The main accused in the Kolkata rape and murder case, Sanjay Roy, is reportedly throwing tantrums over the meal served in jail. Roy is currently locked up in Presidency Correctional Home or Alipore Jail of Kolkata, where he has expressed anger over simple ‘roti-sabzi’ being served to him. He has demanded jail authorities provide him with egg chowmein. &nbsp;

Obviously, prison&nbsp;authorities haven’t met his demands citing rules that say all inmates must have the same food prepared in the jail kitchen. He was also reportedly severely reprimanded by the jail administration, after which he agreed to have roti-sabzi.

Earlier, when Roy was brought to the Alipore jail from Central Bureau of Investigation’s custody, he had urged the jail staff to have some sleep. He was also seen mumbling a few times initially. However, he is understood to have returned to his normal self.

<h2>IMA vs Kolkata police</h2>

Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has raised concerns over West Bengal police allowing a crowd of people to enter the seminar room of the hospital where the doctor’s dead body was found.

Kolkata police had claimed the crowd consisted of authorised people only and identified one Avik De as a fingerprint expert.

Now, IMA has directly disputed this claim, saying Avik De is a first-year&nbsp;Post Graduate Trainee of the Surgery Department of SSKM Hospital.

“Please let us know when the great Dr Avik De became Finger Print Expert? (As stated by Kolkata Police). As we all know, he is a 1st year Post Graduate Trainee of Surgery Department of SSKM Hospital,” IMA wrote on X.

Kolkata rape-murder case: Mother of victim slams Mamata Banerjee for 'threatening' protesting doctors

New details emerged in the Kolkata rape and murder case on Thursday (Aug 29), indicating how the parents of the 31-year-old victim were misled by the hospital authorities where the gruesome incident had happened.

"She has probably died by suicide, please hurry,” the parents were told during one of the interactions with the assistant superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

<h2>Three calls</h2>

During the first call made by the assistant superintendent, the parents were told: “Your daughter is not well. Can you please come to the hospital immediately?”

When the confused father asked for more details, the staff member said, "The doctors will tell you what happened when you get here. We found your number and called because you are the family".

The second call was made after some time, during which the staff member sounded even more distressed.

"Her condition is very critical. Please come as soon as possible," the parents were told.

This made her&nbsp;father extremely worried. When he asked for further details, he was told, "The doctors will explain. Please come here quickly". The father asked the staffer to reveal his identity, to which she replied, “I am the assistant superintendent. I am not a doctor.”

The call reportedly ended abruptly amidst disruption.

The third call made it clear to the distressed parents that their daughter was no longer alive. “She might have committed suicide or died. The police are here. We are at the hospital, in front of everyone, making this call," the parents heard on the call.

<h2>Concerns</h2>

The three calls indicate how the hospital administration may have tried to cover up the cruel incident, as accused by the parents.

The family is now demanding hospital administration answer questions about what actually transpired at the site just before the death of the junior doctor.

Kolkata horror: ‘Your daughter is not well,’ Hospital staff made three frantic calls to family

It has been 20 days since a man allegedly raped and murdered a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Hospital in India’s Kolkata.
&nbsp;
Since then, the capital city of West Bengal and the rest of the country have witnessed protests and outrage hitherto unseen since the days of the Nirbhaya murder case, 12 years ago in the national capital, Delhi. It is as if the nation has been awakened after one of its doctors was brutalised by Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the case that continues to get murkier every day.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Even though our feeds, newspapers, and television screens are full of protest visuals with people screaming for accountability, there have been multiple other sexual violence incidents against women historically from the ‘disadvantaged’ groups since August 9.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
A man allegedly sexually abused two four-year-olds at a private school in Maharashtra’s Badlapur. In another incident a&nbsp;man allegedly raped a friend’s three-year-old daughter in Valsad. While a&nbsp;shopkeeper from North India’s Meerut was arrested for allegedly raping six young boys.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
We are all familiar with the hush-hush stories of sexual violence in our families and communities. Most stories never see the light of day.
&nbsp;
The cases are countless, and the list from just the last few days is enough to overwhelm all of us.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
It appears that we have learnt nothing after decades of sexual violence and brutality running rampant. Even the Indian President, Droupadi Murmu, has said ‘Enough is enough’ and asked society to stop the horrors.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
But when we don’t listen to our conscience, will we listen to our president?&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The case so far
&nbsp;
August 9: The victim’s body is found inside the seminar hall of the RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. After initially telling the victim’s parents of an ‘alleged suicide,’ the police register an FIR (First Information Report).&nbsp;
&nbsp;
August 10: Sanjay Roy, the prime accused, is arrested in connection with allegedly raping and murdering the trainee doctor after a ‘prolonged examination and confession of guilt.’ Protests erupt over the administration’s response to the case after reports of a cover-up quickly spread.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
August 11: The superintendent of the hospital is suspended over alleged discrepancies in the handling of the case.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
August 14: The Central Bureau of Investigation, or CBI, takes up the matter, and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee announces a protest march.
&nbsp;
August 15: An unidentified mob attacks and vandalises&nbsp;the RG Kar Hospital.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
August 17: Doctors demand a nationwide strike and suspension of services in protest of the rape and the ensuing violence.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
August 20: The Supreme Court takes up suo-moto cognisance of the matter.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
August 22: The apex court reprimands Kolkata Police over alleged delay in the handling of the case.&nbsp;

&nbsp;
August 26: ‘Nabanna’ protest march called in West Bengal. Clashes break out between the protestors and police.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Latest: CBI has sought permission for a polygraph test of sub-inspector Anup Dutta, who is said to be close to Sanjay Roy. Opinions will also be sought from AIIMS on the DNA and forensic reports from the case.&nbsp;

Same old script&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The days following the RG Kar Hospital incident saw the same old script play out. It is familiar to every woman in the country and, frankly, the world.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
‘Why did she go out at this hour?’&nbsp;
&nbsp;
‘Why was she wearing short clothes?’&nbsp;
&nbsp;
‘Girls should be careful too.’

The onus of sexual violence is not on its victim but is symptomatic of a greater disease pervading society. One which objectifies the woman and sees her as a means to the patriarchal end, i.e., the man’s sexual release, consent be damned!
&nbsp;
Not safe even after death
&nbsp;
In a shocking turn of events, the Kolkata rape and murder victim was not left in peace even after her brutal death. Her name is trending widely on social media, often by people demanding justice. But in a far more sinister turn of events, her name became the top search trend on various pornography websites. The victim’s morphed images were quick to be circulated in chatrooms frequented by men, with many commenting on her physicality. As if this was not sickening enough, the men of India proceeded to slut-shame not just the victim but compare her to their partners.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
This is beyond horrifying.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Consider this: a man allegedly rapes a woman, brutally murders her, dumps her body to be found later, shows no apparent remorse for his acts, and instead of outrage, his fellow men are laughing off the incident and proceeding to look for pornography related to the incident.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
It is no longer about our “mothers, sisters, and daughters.” As a colleague aptly noted a quote from Bachi Karkaria’s column in the Times of India, 'women are just women, not male appendages.'

Women are not for men to control, manipulate, judge, or admonish. Because if they start judging men, there would not be enough space in the world to hide this gender’s collective shame.&nbsp;

Victim-centric language
&nbsp;
The language we speak, write, and in turn, imbibe is important. Almost all media reports on the Kolkata case have pointed out how a “31-year-old woman was raped and murdered” or how the “victim was brutalised.”&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The onus is always on the victim, in this case a woman, not the accused.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
If we talk about how a man brutally raped and murdered a woman in Kolkata’ or how ‘the accused brutalised the victim’ we will be easing the pressure off women to prove their assault and place it on the accused, as it should be.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
If we were all a little more empathetic about how we talk about sexual violence, maybe it would not have taken so long for Malayalam cinema’s #MeToo movement to kickstart.&nbsp;

Demand for collective action&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The call for stricter rape laws in the country has been an old one. Much before West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress demanded stricter rape laws and conviction rates in the country, activists have been demanding harsher laws against sexual perpetrators and quick dispensation of justice.
&nbsp;
The repeated and long-drawn procedure of a rape trial is often taxing on both the survivor and their family, fuelling suspicion and a greater possibility of the court of public opinion to step in. The honourable courts’ wisdom must prevail regardless of public sentiment.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Time to act has passed

The time to act against sexual violence has passed long ago in India. It has now become the status quo. It is considered a default that women must protect themselves from men and that men will continue to assault them. A woman living in practically any part of the country is no longer safe, let alone other gender and sexual minorities. Women, men, children, and even animals are being raped with their autonomy brutally snatched by both the perpetrators and the court of public opinion.
&nbsp;
We as a society have missed the bus of gender equality so long ago that all women can do now is walk down the never-ending road to apparent justice, all alone.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
But wait, women cannot be ‘allowed’ to walk alone, right? What if they ‘tempt’ men into becoming monsters?&nbsp;

It has been 20 days since a man allegedly raped and murdered a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Hospital in India’s Kolkata.

It has been 20 days since a man allegedly raped and murdered a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Hospital in India’s Kolkata. Since then, the capital city of West Bengal and the rest of the country have witnessed protests and outrage hitherto unseen since the days of the Nirbhaya murder case, 12 years ago in the national capital, Delhi. It is as if the nation has been awakened after one of its doctors was brutalised by Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the case that continues to get murkier every day. Even though our feeds, newspapers, and television screens are full of protest visuals with people screaming for accountability, there have been multiple other sexual violence incidents against women historically from the ‘disadvantaged’ groups since August 9. A man allegedly sexually abused two four-year-olds at a private school in Maharashtra’s Badlapur. In another incident a man allegedly raped a friend’s three-year-old daughter in Valsad. While a shopkeeper from North India’s Meerut was arrested for allegedly raping six young boys. We are all familiar with the hush-hush stories of sexual violence in our families and communities. Most stories never see the light of day. The cases are countless, and the list from just the last few days is enough to overwhelm all of us. It appears that we have learnt nothing after decades of sexual violence and brutality running rampant. Even the Indian President, Droupadi Murmu, has said ‘Enough is enough’ and asked society to stop the horrors. But when we don’t listen to our conscience, will we listen to our president? The case so far August 9: The victim’s body is found inside the seminar hall of the RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. After initially telling the victim’s parents of an ‘alleged suicide,’ the police register an FIR (First Information Report). August 10: Sanjay Roy, the prime accused, is arrested in connection with allegedly raping and murdering the trainee doctor after a ‘prolonged examination and confession of guilt.’ Protests erupt over the administration’s response to the case after reports of a cover-up quickly spread. August 11: The superintendent of the hospital is suspended over alleged discrepancies in the handling of the case. August 14: The Central Bureau of Investigation, or CBI, takes up the matter, and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee announces a protest march. August 15: An unidentified mob attacks and vandalises the RG Kar Hospital. August 17: Doctors demand a nationwide strike and suspension of services in protest of the rape and the ensuing violence. August 20: The Supreme Court takes up suo-moto cognisance of the matter. August 22: The apex court reprimands Kolkata Police over alleged delay in the handling of the case. Also read | Kolkata doctor rape-murder case: Here's what the Supreme Court said August 26: ‘Nabanna’ protest march called in West Bengal. Clashes break out between the protestors and police. Latest: CBI has sought permission for a polygraph test of sub-inspector Anup Dutta, who is said to be close to Sanjay Roy. Opinions will also be sought from AIIMS on the DNA and forensic reports from the case. Same old script The days following the RG Kar Hospital incident saw the same old script play out. It is familiar to every woman in the country and, frankly, the world. ‘Why did she go out at this hour?’ ‘Why was she wearing short clothes?’ ‘Girls should be careful too.’ The onus of sexual violence is not on its victim but is symptomatic of a greater disease pervading society. Kolkata rape-murder: RG Kar Hospital crime is a symptom of India’s collective shame

In a rare development, the President of India Droupadi Murmu&nbsp;spoke about the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital, and expressed&nbsp;her ‘dismay and horror’. President Droupadi Murmu said, “Enough is enough”, as she highlighted the urgent need to step up societal overhaul to stop such crimes in future.

Murmu also threw her weight behind recent protests in support of the victims and called for swift justice.

"Even as students, doctors, and citizens were protesting in Kolkata, criminals remained on the prowl elsewhere," President Murmu told the news agency PTI.

She said that the society needed "honest and unbiased self-introspection" and required to ask itself "some difficult questions".

She also blamed such heinous crimes against women on&nbsp;"deplorable mindset" as most often women are seen as a "lesser human being, less powerful, less capable, and less intelligent".

She later succumbed to the injuries.

In a significant development regarding the Kolkata doctor rape and murder case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sought permission from a Kolkata Court on Tuesday to conduct a polygraph test on Anup Dutta, the Kolkata Police Assistant sub-inspector (ASI).&nbsp; The CBI was conducting the polygraph test on Wednesday at the time&nbsp;of filing of this story. While working on the case, CBI has already conducted lie-detector test on seven people, including the primary accused Sanjay Roy, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, and five more people.&nbsp;

The CBI&nbsp;had taken permission from a Kolkata court to conduct the polygraph test on Assistant Sub-Inspector Dutta, who was earlier questioned by the agency in the case, said a report in The Telegraph.&nbsp;

Officials said that though the information revealed in&nbsp;polygraph test may not be used as evidence during trial but CBI may gather corroborative evidence which could be used in court.

Investigators monitor the&nbsp;psychological responses, heart rate, breathing pattern, sweating and blood pressure of suspects and witnesses during&nbsp;polygraph test to assess inaccuracies in their statements and determine if there are discrepancies in their responses.

The CBI is investigating whether Anup Dutta helped the main suspect, Sanjay Roy, in covering up the rape and murder of the 31-year-old female postgraduate trainee doctor. This horrific incident occurred on August 9&nbsp;in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.&nbsp;

<h2>Who is Anup Dutta</h2>

As per PTI, Anup Dutta has close ties with the primary accused, Sanjay Roy, who was a police volunteer at a police post near the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This test will aid the CBI in finding whether Anup Dutta helped Roy or not. The ASI, Anup Dutta, is facing allegations that he helped the primary accused, Sanjay Roy, gain access to police headquarters and motorcycle, as he is not entitled to any of these services as a police volunteer.&nbsp;

Officials told PTI on Tuesday that Dutta was allegedly helping Roy, and the central agency is trying to find out whether Roy told Dutta about the crime and received any favours from him. In a significant development regarding the Kolkata doctor rape and murder case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sought permission from a Kolkata Court on Tuesday to conduct a polygraph test on Anup Dutta, the Kolkata Police Assistant sub-inspector (ASI). The CBI was conducting the polygraph test on Wednesday at the time of filing of this story. While working on the case, CBI has already conducted lie-detector test on seven people, including the primary accused Sanjay Roy, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, and five more people. The CBI had taken permission from a Kolkata court to conduct the polygraph test on Assistant Sub-Inspector Dutta, who was earlier questioned by the agency in the case, said a report in The Telegraph. Officials said that though the information revealed in polygraph test may not be used as evidence during trial but CBI may gather corroborative evidence which could be used in court. Investigators monitor the psychological responses, heart rate, breathing pattern, sweating and blood pressure of suspects and witnesses during polygraph test to assess inaccuracies in their statements and determine if there are discrepancies in their responses. The CBI is investigating whether Anup Dutta helped the main suspect, Sanjay Roy, in covering up the rape and murder of the 31-year-old female postgraduate trainee doctor. This horrific incident occurred on August 9 in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Massive police deployed ahead of students ‘Nabanna’ protest march in Kolkata

Sanjay Roy, the prime suspect in the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, has a disturbing personal history. Roy, who worked as a civic volunteer, had been married four times, with three of his former wives reportedly leaving him due to his abusive behaviour. His fourth wife tragically passed away from cancer last year, as per an India Today report.

<h2>Shocking confessions and criminal behaviour</h2>

During the ongoing investigation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) uncovered shocking details. During a polygraph test, Roy admitted to visiting a red-light district with a friend just hours before the crime. Although he claimed not to have engaged in sexual activities, he did confess to molesting another woman later that night.

Adding to the disturbing revelations, it was reported that Roy video-called his girlfriend around the same time, asking for nude photographs.

<h2>CBI examines financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College</h2>

In a parallel development, the CBI has also opened an investigation into alleged financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College, the institution where the tragic incident occurred on August 9. The case&nbsp;initially handled by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the West Bengal government,&nbsp;was later transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court, adding another layer of complexity to this already deeply troubling case.

<h2>Night of the crime</h2>

On the night of the incident, Sanjay Roy had drinks with a friend before visiting a red-light area and then Chetla, another such area in South Kolkata. On their way, they allegedly molested a girl. They later returned to the hospital, where Roy was seen in the corridor near the seminar hall at 4:03 am.

Kolkata doctor rape-murder: Accused Sanjay Roy married four times, molested another woman before crime

In a major revelation in the Kolkata rape and murder case, main accused Sanjay Roy told West Bengal police that he stalked the victim at the chest medicine ward a day before he committed the gruesome crime. The CCTV footage from August 8 shows Roy staring at the 33-year-old victim and four other junior doctors at the chest ward.

As per reports, the doctor went to the seminal hall at 1:00 am (local time) on August 9 to sleep between her 36-hour-long shift. Roy was seen entering the premises at 4:00 am (local time).

The doctor was later found dead in the morning, raped and murdered.

<h2>CBI investigating broken door bolt</h2>

News agency PTI reported that CBI was investigating the “broken bolt” on the seminar hall’s door. CBI is trying to find the answer to the question of&nbsp;how the offence was carried out without getting noticed by anybody.

CBI is also pursuing the angle that Roy may have sought a third person’s assistance to stand guard at the door.

“Interviews with doctors, interns, and junior doctors revealed that the door’s malfunction had been a known issue, which prevented the victim from locking the door that night,” one official was quoted as saying by the news agency.

“The tower bolt was broken, which caused the door to malfunction. We are probing whether anyone was stationed outside to act as a guard while the crime was committed,” the official said.

Kolkata horror: Accused Sanjay Roy stalked victim earlier; CBI investigating broken door bolt of seminar hall

The CBI, investigating the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, informed the Supreme Court on Thursday that their investigation was hindered by the altered crime scene.

The probe into the August 9 incident, which sparked protests by doctors in several parts of the country, was transferred from Kolkata Police to the CBI on August 13 by the Calcutta High Court.

A day later, a mob targeted doctors holding a protest at night and vandalised sections of the hospital.

The Supreme Court, having taken suo motu cognizance of the incident, resumed proceedings on Thursday and once again questioned the delay in filing an FIR by the Kolkata Police in the case of the junior doctor's rape and murder.

The top court also questioned the move of the state government in appointing the then principal, Sandip Kumar Ghosh, to another hospital immediately after his resignation from the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

After Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the West Bengal government and Kolkata Police, argued that the police had adhered to all case registration guidelines, the Chief Justice of India, D Y Chandrachud, presiding over a bench that also included Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, stated that this still did not explain the delayed filing of the FIR.

Referring the status report of the CBI, the CJI said “this doesn’t justify registration of your FIR at 11:45 at night, when the body was recovered soon after 9-9.30 am”.

The CJI further said, “What was the principal's role? The college principal should have immediately arrived on campus and ordered the filing of the FIR. Who was he in contact with? What were his connections? Why was he appointed as the principal of another college as soon as he resigned? What was the purpose? He is still under investigation."

Appearing for the CBI, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said “our investigation itself is a challenge by itself because the scene of offence is altered”.

Sibal disagreed and said “nothing is altered, everything is videographed”.

Mehta replied and said, “Most shocking fact. The FIR is lodged after cremation, at 11.45 in the night. First, the parents are informed by the Deputy Superintendent that their daughter is not well. When they reach, they say she has committed suicide. Fortunately, the young doctors, the colleagues of the deceased, insisted that there should be videography. This is suggestive that even they were suspecting some cover-up.”

Sibal said, “This is entirely accusatory. I do not want to contradict my friend but the record will show what happened.”

The CJI too pointed out that only the postmortem was videographed.

The bench also inquired about the time at which the case of unnatural death was registered by the police. At one point, Justice Pardiwala said, “The entire procedure which your police have followed, it is something at least I have not come across in my 30 years…”.

Sibal asserted that the case of unnatural death was registered significantly earlier, on August 9 and that the confusion arose due to the terminology used by the police in the case diary.

He said all investigation was done in accordance with law” and there was “no delay in investigation”.

The CBI, investigating the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, informed the Supreme Court on Thursday that their investigation was hindered by the altered crime scene.

Also read: Kolkata doctor rape-murder case: Court orders WB govt to not take action against 'peaceful' protesters The top court also questioned the move of the state government in appointing the then principal, Sandip Kumar Ghosh, to another hospital immediately after his resignation from the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. He is still under investigation." Appearing for the CBI, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said “our investigation itself is a challenge by itself because the scene of offence is altered”. Sibal disagreed and said “nothing is altered, everything is videographed”. Also read: Kolkata horror: After staging rally, CM Mamata Banerjee writes to PM seeking stricter anti-rape law Mehta replied and said, “Most shocking fact. This is suggestive that even they were suspecting some cover-up.” Sibal said, “This is entirely accusatory. I do not want to contradict my friend but the record will show what happened.” The CJI too pointed out that only the postmortem was videographed. Kolkata rape-murder: CBI tells Supreme Court altered crime scene is a challenge

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal state, where a junior doctor was raped and murdered earlier this month, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (Aug 22), urging him to enact stricter laws on sexual assault. The CM's letter comes amidst massive outrage against the Mamata Banerjee&nbsp;government over the death of the doctor in a state-run Kolkata hospital and subsequent vandalism at RG Kar Hospital.

Even the Supreme Court of India pulled up the Mamata government, saying it was "unable to comprehend" how the state government was not able to "handle the issue of vandalism" at the hospital. Mamata had earlier blamed PM Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for vandalism at the hospital and even accused them of trying to destroy the evidence.&nbsp;

The case is now being investigated by India’s premier agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), following an order by the Calcutta High Court. The court observed "serious lapses" by the hospital administration and said on August 13 that even after five days, there had been no significant progress in the investigation by the state police.

Despite this, the identity of the Kolkata rape-murder victim was shared widely. On Tuesday (August 20), during a hearing of the Supreme Court's suo moto action into the rape case probe, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud flagged that the RG Kar hospital victim's identity was shared rampantly across India.

"The pictures and video clips of the body of the deceased have&nbsp;been circulating on social media," noted the CJI.

"This is extremely concerning. We are first to recognise free speech but there are well-settled parameters. There are judgments of the court like in Nipun Saxena (case) that names of survivors of sexual assault will not be published," said the&nbsp;top&nbsp;court.

CJI slams media for sharing the victim's identity According to Section 72 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, anyone who prints or publishes the name or any information that could reveal the identity of a victim of offences like rape or sexual assault, could be punished with imprisonment for up to two years. "The pictures and video clips of the body of the deceased have been circulating on social media," noted the CJI. "This is extremely concerning. We are first to recognise free speech but there are well-settled parameters. There are judgments of the court like in Nipun Saxena (case) that names of survivors of sexual assault will not be published," said the top court. (With inputs from agencies)

Kolkata rape-murder: Victim's autopsy report reveals evidence of strangulation and forceful penetration

While hearing the tragic Kolkata doctor rape-murder case, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, on Tuesday, referred to the Aruna Shanbaug incident. On the night of November 27, 1973, she was brutally attacked by a ward attendant at the hospital. The rapist, identified as Sohanlal Bharta Walmiki, sexually assaulted her before strangling her using a dog chain.&nbsp;

The brutal attack left Shanbaug with severe brain damage and she fell into a persistent vegetative state (PVS).&nbsp;

Reportedly, the ward boy attacked her because Aruna accused him of stealing food meant for medical experiments at the hospital and threatened to report the theft to hospital authorities.

She remained in PVS, unable to speak and reliant on others, until she died in 2015. Till her death, she was kept alive through forced feeding.

That year, a journalist Pinki Virani — the writer of a book on Aruna titled 'Aruna's Story' — filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking permission for euthanasia. On March 7, 2011, the Supreme Court rejected the petition for active euthanasia. The court said that Aruna was not brain-dead and responded to certain stimuli.&nbsp;

After years in a persistent vegetative state, Aruna contracted pneumonia and died of it on May 18, 2015. Her attacker, Sohanlal Bharta Walmiki, escaped sexual assault charges as "sodomy" was not classified as rape under Indian law back then. Instead, he was charged with robbery and attempted murder and only served a seven-year sentence. He was released in 1980.&nbsp;

The rapist, identified as Sohanlal Bharta Walmiki, sexually assaulted her before strangling her using a dog chain. The brutal attack left Shanbaug with severe brain damage and she fell into a persistent vegetative state (PVS). Euthanasia debate Given Aruna Shanbaug's quality of life, or the lack of it, she even became the centre of a national debate over euthanasia in 2011. On March 7, 2011, the Supreme Court rejected the petition for active euthanasia. The court said that Aruna was not brain-dead and responded to certain stimuli. After years in a persistent vegetative state, Aruna contracted pneumonia and died of it on May 18, 2015. Her attacker, Sohanlal Bharta Walmiki, escaped sexual assault charges as "sodomy" was not classified as rape under Indian law back then. Instead, he was charged with robbery and attempted murder and only served a seven-year sentence. He was released in 1980. (With inputs from agencies)

CBI gets court nod to conduct lie detector test of main accused Sanjay Roy in Kolkata rape-murder case

The father of the trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital&nbsp;alleged that his daughter's body was cremated hurriedly, even though there were already three other bodies at the crematorium.

"The crematorium had three other bodies, but our daughter's was burned first," he told ANI.

"The Chief Minister is talking about providing justice, but attempts are being made to put the common people demanding justice in jail. We are not satisfied with Mamata Banerjee and have refused to take any compensation," he said.

"The Chief Minister makes public statements demanding justice for my daughter but at the same time appears to suppress public outrage. Why this inconsistency? Is she afraid of public opinion? We need clear answers," the victim's father said, speaking to reporters in Kolkata on Sunday (August 18).

He also claimed that the West Bengal government is obstructing statewide protests over his daughter's death. "Protesters are being silenced by the Chief Minister. She protests publicly herself, yet is working to prevent others from doing the same," he added.

The victim's mother has appealed to West Bengal residents, particularly those benefitting from government schemes like Kanyashree and Lakshmi Bhandar.

"She (Mamata Banerjee) promised that the perpetrator would be swiftly arrested, but only one person has been detained so far. I believe there are many more involved and that the entire department is at fault. The police response was inadequate. It seems the Chief Minister is trying to curb the protests—today she imposed Section 144 to prevent public demonstrations," she said.

These comments came shortly after Kolkata Police imposed prohibitory orders around RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, banning gatherings of more than five people.

The area has been a focal point of protests following the tragic incident, with police enforcing Section 163 (2) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita around the hospital and extending the restrictions up to the Shyambazar five-point crossing.

In India's Uttarakhand, the 'Land of Gods', a teenage girl has been ‘gangraped’ by five men on a State Roadways Bus while travelling from the national capital Delhi. The heinous incident, a stark echo of the 2012 Nirbhaya case, took place on the intervening night of August 12 and 13 at the interstate bus terminus (ISBT) in Dehradun. As per reports, the gangrape survivor is a minor, a 15-year-old possibly "mentally disturbed" girl hailing from Uttar Pradesh's Moradabad. The disturbing crime comes just days after the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in West Bengal's Kolkata shocked India and as protests continue to rock the nation. Five men arrested Reports suggest that five men, including two bus drivers, were arrested on Sunday (August 18) for gang-raping the minor girl. After 2-3 days of counselling, the victim informed the police that she was sexually assaulted by five men, identified as Dharmendra Kumar (32), Devendra (52), Ravi Kumar (34), Rajpal (57) and Rajesh Kumar Sonkar (38). A case has been registered under sections 70(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and 5G/6 of the POCSO Act. "A bus driver from Bhagwanpur is the main accused in this incident, and a case has been registered against him," said Singh. "Another driver, a cleaner, a sweeper, and a cashier were involved. All five have been identified and arrested. All the accused are residents of Majra, Buggawala and Bhagwanpur," he said, adding, "The main accused said that he saw the girl roaming at Kashmere Gate in Delhi and told her to sit on the bus."
