Speaking to India Today, Ramakrishna opened up on the entire matter and said, “What's the point of getting two medals in a single Olympics if you have to beg for awards?” “One government official is deciding, and committee members are silent, not giving their opinion. I don't understand. Is this the way you are encouraging athletes?,” he asked.
"We applied for the award but have heard nothing from the committee. Why are parents encouraging their kids to play; they should push them to become IRS officers in government," he further added.

It was rechristened from Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratn an award last year.

"It is a fantastic moment. Not just for me but for the whole Table Tennis fraternity because of the kind of performances that I have had over the last three-four years. I am slowly starting to peak now in my career and the way I played the 2022 Birmingham Games. I got these three medals. Three gold and one silver. I can't ask for more, 2022 has been fantastic and this is the best way to finish 2022 with the Khel Ratna award. The government gave me this recognition. I am really happy that it has finally come now after 30 years of being in sports I have come to the stature and the best sportsperson in the country. Initially, I was the best sportsperson in Table Tennis. Slowly over the years, I have scaled up to the height where I am the best spokesperson in the country. Kamal becomes the second TT player after Manika Batra to receive the honour, as per Olympics.com. The 40-year-old has had a great 2022, in which he won three gold medals and a silver at Commonwealth Games in Birmingham earlier this year in August. 
 
"Getting an award in front of family. My wife is here and a few other friends are here so really excited to go in the evening and be there. Part of the ceremony and share the moment with friends and family," said the CWG champion. He is the only player nominated for the award this year by India`s national sports awards selection committee, which recommended 11 players last year and five in 2020. Speaking about the time he claimed a place in the top 50 rankings in the world and won Commonwealth Games gold Kamal said he has a fantastic career and he has come so far in it. 
 
"I just played the sport because I liked it. I liked playing the sport. I liked going to the club and being around the kids but I think when I wanted to take the sport professionally up at the age of 15-16 at that point in time I wanted to be the best player from India to have played the sport. So, at that point in time it was like breaking into the top 50 in the world or getting a commonwealth gold but with such a long career a fantastic one I have been able to win 7 gold medals. I am really happy that I have come this far," he added.

The Southpaw's cumulative award points over a period of four years make him a strong contender for the prestigious award but a doping ban in 2012 make things look grim. In an exclusive interview with WION's Subhayan Chakraborty, Amit Panghal talked about Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award nomination, eligibility issue, training in lockdown, fitness, Olympic gold dream and more.&nbsp;

Subhayan Chakraborty: Amit, congratulations on the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna nomination. Big moment?

Amit Panghal:&nbsp;Definitely! It feels great and I am deeply honoured. I have been trying and fighting for Arjuna Award since the last couple of years and to now get nominated for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna is a huge honour. And if I win it then it will be really special. It will be a massive confidence booster for me and my game.

SC: You have had a highly impactful career so far, which is the standout moment for you?

AP: Asian Games 2018 where I won the gold. Aankhein bilkul namm thi...(I was teary-eyed). And that was even more special because my basic coach Anil Dhankar was fasting that day for me. He had said 'I won't eat if Amit doesn't win the gold'. That gold-winning moment and to recall everything on the podium was special.&nbsp;

SC:&nbsp;How much hit has your game taken due to lockdown?

AP:&nbsp;I have maintained my fitness but my game has definitely taken a hit. I haven't been able to do skill-based training, which I am looking forward to resuming as lockdown continues to ease out. Hopefully, the situation will improve soon and we will be able to resume proper training. I would require around 1 month to get back to my peak fitness. Hopefully, I will be able to give my country what no other boxer has given, a gold medal.&nbsp;

SC: What&nbsp;is the next target for you?

AP: I have been winning gold and silvers on a regular basis now and I want to continue it. I want to see our national flag fly as high as possible. Olympic&nbsp;gold is something I have dreamed of and I want to achieve it for my country. I have worked hard on my game and now, as we have some more time, I will try and be the best version of myself in the Tokyo Games. Now with things opening up a bit, I will try and get back to my regular training and get back my peak fitness and rhythm.&nbsp;

The Boxing Federation of India on Monday nominated world silver-medallist Amit Panghal and the seasoned Vikas Krishan for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, picking only Olympic-bound names as its nominees for the annual honours.

Panghal (52kg), also an Asian Games champion, has not won any national sports award. He is being nominated for the Arjuna award for the past three years but has not been considered by the selection committee because of a 2012 "inadvertent" dope offence.

Commonwealth and Asian Games gold-medallist Krishan (69kg) won the Arjuna award in 2012.

The BFI has nominated world bronze-winning trio of Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) and Simranjit Kaur (64kg) and Manish Kaushik (63kg) for the Arjuna awards.

In its nominations for the Dronacharya awards, the BFI has finalised the names of national women's coach Mohammed Ali Qamar and assistant coach Chhote Lal Yadav.

Yadav is also closely associated with six-time world champion M C Mary Kom.

India's prolific limited overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma was on Saturday nominated for the prestigious 'Khel Ratna' award by the BCCI for his stupendous performance in 2019 when he dazzled with five hundreds in the 50-over World Cup.

Rohit's opening partner Shikhar Dhawan and Ishant Sharma, the most-capped Test cricketer in the current set-up, have been nominated for the Arjuna Award.

In the women's section, Deepti Sharma got BCCI nomination for her consistent show across formats in the last three years.

The PTI on May 13 had reported about Dhawan and Deepti's likely nominations for the Arjuna award.

Dhawan was in fact nominated in 2018 alongside Smriti Mandhana but missed out on the award.

As skipper Virat Kohli has got the highest sporting honour, Rohit with his magnificent white-ball record over the years was an automatic choice. Having scored 9115 runs in 224 ODIs with 29 hundreds and 43 fifties.

He also has 2141 runs in 32 Tests with six hundreds and 10 fifties. In 108 T20 Internationals, the 33-year-old has scored 2773 runs with four fifties apart from being ICC's 'Cricketer of the Year'.

"We went through a lot of data and considered various parameters before shortlisting the nominees. Rohit Sharma has set new benchmarks as a batsman and achieved scores people thought were not possible in the shorter formats of the game," BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said, referring to his three double hundreds in 50-over cricket.

"We feel he is worthy of getting the prestigious Khel Ratna award for his commitment, conduct, consistency and his leadership skills," Ganguly added.

Secretary Jay Shah termed Rohit as perfect "teamman" who led well in absence of regular skipper Virat Kohli. 
"In the last five years, Rohit Sharma has not only raised the bar with his individual performances but has also led the Indian team with distinction in Virat Kohli's absence," Shah was quoted as saying in a BCCI press release.

For 31-year-old Ishant, it was a long wait to earn the nomination as he is the senior-most member in the current Test set-up with 97 Tests under his belt apart from 80 ODIs and 14 T20Is.

Ishant has 297 Test wickets under his belt and by the end of the year is expected to be second pacer in the country after Kapil Dev to complet 100 Test matches.

"Fast bowlers are prone to injuries and Ishant has had a fair share of them but he has fought hard to be back on the park every time," Ganguly commented on his nomination.

The 34-year-old Dhawan holds the record for the fastest Test century on debut and is the only batsman in the world to have won two consecutive golden bats (for most runs) in the ICC Champions Trophy.

He is also the quickest Indian batsman to reach 2000 and 3000 runs in ODIs and second-fastest Indian to score 4000 and 5000 runs in ODIs.

In 136 ODIs, he has scored 5688 runs with 17 hundreds apart from 2315 runs in 34 Tests (7 hundreds) and 1588 runs in 61 T20 Internationals.

The 24-year-old Deepti has already played 54 ODIs and 48 T20 Internationals for the country. She also holds the record of highest individual score by an Indian woman in ODIs - 188. She has so far scored 1840 international runs and taken 117 wickets across two formats.
