<p>So, <em>A Haunting In Venice</em> is a followup to 2017's M<em>urder on the Orient Express </em>and 2022's <em>Death on the Nile </em>and finds Poirot in Venice. Now retired, he has had enough of murderous criminals and does not want to involve himself in any more murder mysteries. He is brought out of retirement by Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey), a successful writer of murder mysteries and a friend. She claims to have attended a seance where things actually happened. Even though she is not a believer in the supernatural, she was struck by what she saw and felt. Initially reluctant, she convinces him to attend another one scheduled on All Hallows' Eve, better known as Halloween.</p>

<p>The location is an old palazzo owned by one Rowena Drake (Kelly Reilly), a formerly well-known opera performer, whose young daughter Alicia Drake (Rowan Robinson) died after falling from her balcony into the water below before the story starts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The seances, Rowena claims, are for her to talk to her dear daughter again. They are performed by a woman called Joyce Reynolds, played by Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh of all people. There are also her assistants Nicholas and Desdemona Holland (Ali Khan and Emma Laird, respectively) the anxiety-ridden family doctor Leslie Ferrier (Jamie Dornan), his son Leopold Ferrier (Jude Hill), the dead girl's ex-fiancé Maxime Gerard (Kyle Allen), the house help Olga Seminoff (Camille Cottin), and an ex-cop Vitale Portfoglio (Riccardo Scamarcio).</p>

<p>Oh, and it is a stormy night. The stage is set for your typical Christie mystery. But where is the murder? Well, it happens soon enough.</p>

<p>I loved <em>A Haunting In Venice</em>. I will wait for the dust to settle to say for certain, but I believe this is my favourite&nbsp;Branagh-directed Christie movie. It is most well-directed, and written, and I wager though it deviates quite radically from its source material, most fans of the Dame would not mind it. It is true in the spirit of the text if not in literal terms. It is also extremely taut, and at a little over 100 minutes, it feels both substantial and does not overstay its welcome.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The film is also extremely well-shot. We do not see a lot of Venice, but the palazzo (which I believe is a set custom-built for the film). The setting of the film goes a long way in creating a sense of mystery and intrigue within the confines. In this opulent yet foreboding setting, the dark, ornate interiors and labyrinthine hallways provide a rich and atmospheric backdrop to the unfolding mystery, casting an eerie spell over the proceedings. The film's attention to detail in its setting and production design is simply outstanding, something I did not expect.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As he investigates the crime and questions the colourful cast of characters, Poirot is haunted by an eerie voice, as though of a child. He even gets visions of a girl, her clothes dripping, her skin pale like that of a cadaver. Now, Poirot has always been a man of science so he struggles to come to terms with what his eyes appear to be seeing and ears appear to be listening. The visions and sounds challenge Poirot's rationality, inviting both him and the audience to question the boundaries between the natural and the supernatural.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Using a stunning yet sparing score by Hildur Guðnadóttir (who won an Oscar for 2019's Joker) and sound effects, Branagh weaves eerie whispers and ghostly apparitions without explicitly making the film a horror film. I say that not because it does not have the potential to be scary, but because it is not very interested in answering the question as to whether ghosts exist than it is in what humans really are capable of, particularly if they believe they can get away with it. It is a recurring theme in Christie's works like And Then There Were None that Branagh absolutely nails here.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As the storm rages outside, the tension inside the palazzo tightens like a noose. Branagh skillfully choreographs a dance of secrets, motives, and hidden agendas, leaving the audience mostly in suspense until the final revelation, though I think those well-versed in mystery fiction might guess the culprit before Poirot announces the name. It is still worth it.</p>

<p><em>A Haunting in Venice</em> works as both a compelling, if a little predictable, mystery, and also as a pretty good horror film.</p>

British actor-filmmaker Kenneth Branagh is back with his third in Hercule Poirot movies based on Dame Agatha Christie's works. This one, titled A Haunting in Venice, brings back him as iconic fictional Belgian sleuth Poirot but the story, based on Christie's Hallowe'en Party, is a prequel to both Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile.

<p>Renowned filmmaker and actor Kenneth Branagh's third effort in the Hercule Poirot films, which is based on Agatha Christie novels,&nbsp;'A Haunting in Venice' is set to have an ensemble cast.&nbsp;20th Century Studios recently announced the names of the actors who have been cast for the much-awaited film. And, it includes&nbsp;Tina Fey, Jamie Dornan, Michelle Yeoh, Kyle Allen, Camille Cottin, Jude Hill, Ali Khan, Emma Laird, Kelly Reilly and Riccardo Scamarico.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The supernatural thriller film is being headlined by Branagh, who is supposed to&nbsp;reprise his role as Poirot. More details about the film are yet to be revealed. For now, we just know that the film is set in post-WWII Venice and it follows another mystery featuring the celebrated sleuth Poirot.</p>

<p>The film's production will begin in November this year. It's supposed to be shot at&nbsp;Pinewood Studios in London and in Venice.</p>

<p>Growing up in Belfast at the peak of&nbsp;the Catholic-Protestant conflict&nbsp;in 1969 was not all a bed of thorns for writer-director Kenneth Branagh. To be honest, I saw Branagh looking at his childhood in Belfast with rose-tinted glasses. And the more he relies on Haris Zambarloukos’ reflective black-and-white photography to give his nostalgic urges a wide berth, the more euphoric the broken world of warfare and strife appears to be.</p>

<p>Not that there is&nbsp;anything wrong with a happy interpretation of an inherently bleak past. We all tend to shut out the ugly dark passages in our memory bank. This doesn’t necessarily make the memory bank any less bankable.</p>

<p>In spite of that dizzying glow of warm recollection that bathes Belfast in a blaze of colours and emotions, it seems to be an&nbsp;unimpeachably scrupulous representation of the past, down to the street where our little 9-year old hero Buddy (newcomer &nbsp;Jude Hill, doing that Shirley Temple acting template, whether by design or willi-nilly, I can’t say) lives with his harried mother(Caitríona Balfe, dazzling in her working-class sexiness) and grandparents(played by &nbsp;Ciarán Hinds and an almost comically revamped Judi Dench).</p>

<p>Absentee father (Jamie Dornan) keeps making weekend appearances to&nbsp;argue with his mother on whether they should all move to England. Or else the family is at the movies singing along in Chitty Chiity Bang Bang or ogling at Raquel Welch in One million Years BC.</p>

The emotional scenes are sniffles in sly motions of cryptic emotions. Every actor catches on to Kenneth Branagh’s charming memory waltz, hopping and skipping as he does from a &nbsp;drama of despair to a comedy of manners like Jane Austen on a Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote-trip.</p>

<p>The mood of the presentation, though deceptively upbeat, secretes a deep sense of loss and when little &nbsp;Buddy finally leaves his &nbsp;troubled neighbourhood in Ireland with his family, we get a heartbreaking closeup of grandma Judi Dench &nbsp;whispering, ‘Go, go, and don’t look back.’</p>

To be honest, I saw Branagh looking at his childhood in Belfast with rose-tinted glasses. And the more he relies on Haris Zambarloukos’ reflective black-and-white photography to give his nostalgic urges a wide berth, the more euphoric the broken world of warfare and strife appears to be. Not that there is anything wrong with a happy interpretation of an inherently bleak past. We all tend to shut out the ugly dark passages in our memory bank. Can watch In spite of that dizzying glow of warm recollection that bathes Belfast in a blaze of colours and emotions, it seems to be an unimpeachably scrupulous representation of the past, down to the street where our little 9-year old hero Buddy (newcomer Jude Hill, doing that Shirley Temple acting template, whether by design or willi-nilly, I can’t say) lives with his harried mother(Caitríona Balfe, dazzling in her working-class sexiness) and grandparents(played by Ciarán Hinds and an almost comically revamped Judi Dench). Absentee father (Jamie Dornan) keeps making weekend appearances to argue with his mother on whether they should all move to England. Or else the family is at the movies singing along in Chitty Chiity Bang Bang or ogling at Raquel Welch in One million Years BC. 'Belfast' is a beguiling blend of realism and style. It is smokily shot to convey a sense of ongoing seductiveness as Ireland burns with religious strife. The emotional scenes are sniffles in sly motions of cryptic emotions. Every actor catches on to Kenneth Branagh’s charming memory waltz, hopping and skipping as he does from a drama of despair to a comedy of manners like Jane Austen on a Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote-trip. The mood of the presentation, though deceptively upbeat, secretes a deep sense of loss and when little Buddy finally leaves his troubled neighbourhood in Ireland with his family, we get a heartbreaking closeup of grandma Judi Dench whispering, ‘Go, go, and don’t look back.’ If only life’s choices were that simple.

"It`s a story that happened to me really when I was about nine years old and it changed my life forever when a moment of violent change affected my identity and my home and my family and this is the story of that change," Branagh told Reuters on the red carpet, adding that reliving the memories while making and promoting the movie "was and is very emotional".<br />

Belfast is all Buddy knows and to his horror, his parents, played by Jamie Dornan and Caitriona Balfe, begin to contemplate a fresh start abroad. As his life is turned upside down, his grandparents, portrayed by Judi Dench and Ciaran Hinds, help maintain a sense of normalcy with their warmth and wit.<br />
<br />
"I know what that means, to put family first. My whole ethos and my whole life I`ve put my family first," said Dornan, who grew up in the outskirts of Belfast.<br />

Since winning the People`s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, 'Belfast'&nbsp;has become an early Oscar frontrunner.<br />

"At the moment, we are so happy that the film looks like it might reach an audience, that it`s punching above its weight," said Branagh, 60, when asked about the Oscar buzz.<br />

<p>The Tenet actor will play U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 'This Sceptred Isle', a new limited series for British broadcaster Sky focusing on the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. The five-part drama series will follow Johnson and his administration as well as scientists and health care workers as they struggle to respond to the unprecedented crisis.</p>

<p>Michael Winterbottom (The Trip, 24 Hour Party People) will direct the series, and co-wrote it with Kieron Quirke (Defending the Guilty). Winterbottom will also executive produce alongside True Detective EP Richard Brown.&nbsp;According to Variety, the drama will trace the impact COVID-19 crisis on the country, and the response of scientists, nurses, and doctors as they worked round the clock to try and contain the virus.</p>

<p>"The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic will be remembered forever," Winterbottom said in a statement. "A time when the country came together to battle an invisible enemy. A time when people were more aware than ever of the importance of community. Our series weaves together countless true stories — from Boris Johnson in Number 10 [Downing Street] to front line workers around the country — chronicling the efforts of scientists, doctors, care home workers and policymakers to protect us from the virus."</p>

<p>Added Brown, "Michael is a master of weaving compelling drama from factual stories and he has an undeniable, distinct vision for this project. He and Kieron have written remarkable and meticulously researched scripts which powerfully dramatize these extraordinary events that continue to affect us all."</p>

<p>Shooting for the series will start soon and the drama is expected to premiere on Sky Atlantic late next year.</p>

The International Television Academy of Arts & Sciences handed out awards in 11 categories such as Arts Programming, Best Actor, Best Actress, Comedy, Documentary, Drama, Non-US Primetime, Non-Scripted, Short-Form, Telenovela and TV Movie. This year’s nominees represented 18 countries ranging from Australia to Turkey to the Philippines. Norway's “Mammon II” grabbed the highest award with Best Drama series in its kitty. In individual races, Kenneth Branagh won the Best Actor award while the Best Actress award went to Anna Friel in Marcella. Steve Coogan picked up the trophy for comedy series for his Sky Atlantic series “Alan Partridge’s Scissored Isle.” Turkey’s “Kara Sevda” (Endless Love) won for telenovela.
