Pakistan foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi's remarks against the Organisation of Islamic Conference led by Saudi Arabia for its inaction on the Kashmir issue has strained the relations between the two countries.

Qureshi postponed his press conference on Tuesday for the second time as Saudi has reacted strongly against his statements. Pakistan's foreign minister is said to have called the press conference to explain his statements to defuse tensions between the country. However, it seems like Pakistan plans to do more than just a press conference.

Last week, Qureshi, during a meeting of its Council of Foreign Ministers, asked OIC to stop “stop dilly-dallying” on the matter of Kashmir.
“I am once again respectfully telling OIC that a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers is our expectation. If you cannot convene it, then I’ll be compelled to ask Prime Minister Imran Khan to call a meeting of the Islamic countries that are ready to stand with us on the issue of Kashmir and support the oppressed Kashmiris,” he had told a TV channel.

According to Pakistan's Foreign Office, Qureshi's remarks were well under the diplomatic norms.

Pakistan has urged foreign ministers for convening the meeting of the 57-member bloc of Muslim countries, the second largest intergovernmental body after the UN since India scrapped Jammu and Kashmir’s special status last August.

Last year, Pakistan skipped the Kuala Lampur summit on a request of Saudi Arabia and Qureshi has urged Riyadh to “show leadership on the issue”.

“We have our own sensitivities. You have to realise this. Gulf countries should understand this,” the foreign minister said.

Qureshi cleared that his statements were not given emotionally and fully understood the implications of his statement. “It’s right, I’m taking a position despite our good ties with Saudi Arabia.”

Even as Pakistan this week drew international attention to the plight of Muslims in Indian Kashmir, Islamabad stayed conspicuously silent about another embattled Muslim community -- China's Uighur population.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has presented himself as a defender of Muslims worldwide and routinely speaks out on the disputed Kashmir region, even comparing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Adolf Hitler and accusing him of overseeing a genocide.

"We will never accept, and neither will the Kashmiris, the illegal Indian actions and oppression of the Kashmiri people," Khan said Wednesday as Pakistan marked the one-year anniversary of India stripping the Muslim-majority region of its semi-autonomous status.

This week he led a march through Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, as thousands took to the streets across the country.

But even amid mounting evidence of a harsh crackdown on the Uighur population in neighbouring China's Xinjiang region, Khan has refused to be drawn into the domestic affairs of Pakistan's long-time ally.

'Grateful to China'
Pakistan and India have clashed over Kashmir since independence from Britain in 1947, with both countries claiming the territory that has sparked two full-blown wars between the foes.

China meanwhile has steadily poured cash into Pakistan, investing more than $50 billion as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) that has upgraded infrastructure, power and transport links connecting Xinjiang to Pakistan's newly refurbished Gwadar port.

China has also offered steadfast diplomatic support to Pakistan during its frequent bouts of unrest with India.

"Pakistan sees China as its principal supporter against India and is unwilling to say or do anything that disrupts ties with Beijing," Husain Haqqani -- Pakistan's former ambassador to the US who is now a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute -- told AFP.

When asked about the Uighurs, Khan has wafted between citing unfamiliarity with the issue and defending Pakistan's vital relationship China.

"China has helped us when we were at rock bottom. We are really grateful to the Chinese government, so we have decided that any issues we have had with China we will handle privately," Khan said at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January.

Pakistan's silence on the Uighurs is not unique in the Islamic world.

Prince Mohammed bin Salman, heir to the throne of Saudi Arabia and the country's de facto leader, has also defended China, saying he respected Beijing's "anti-terrorism" efforts. Turkey has also toned down criticism on the issue.

Analysts say Khan and future Pakistani leaders are unlikely to change course.

"Because Pakistan's population doesn't know much about and doesn't feel strongly about the Uighur issue, the state insulates itself from charges of hypocrisy," said Madiha Afzal, a Brookings Institution fellow.

"On the other hand, Kashmir is an issue of visceral importance to many Pakistanis, and central to Pakistan's conflict with India -- as such, the Pakistani state is almost expected by its people to raise its voice."

"I discussed this idea with my father. We thought to incorporate scientifically proven nutrients that are immunomodulators and have anti-inflammatory properties," Asma said.

The family is happy after a food lab in Delhi showed positive results as they feared baking might reduce the immunity-boosting property of the bakery. "We sent two samples to a lab in Delhi. We have been working on this for two months," says Sofi Mohiddin, owner of Hilo Makhbaz Bakery, adding that vitamin C has been added in low quantity fearing the biscuits would taste sour.

There have been growing COVID-19 cases in the newly formed union territory which has raised concerns with Srinagar topping the charts among 20 districts of Jammu and Kashmir. The spread of Coronavirus has raised the demand for immunity boosters across the globe while scientists battle to produce vaccines. Taking a cue from the situation, a girl in Kashmir valley has started making immunity-boosting bakery at her father's shop in Srinagar. A Master of Science in food technology, Asma Mohidin, is hoping that her immunity-boosting bakery would be a star attraction on the coming holy Islamic festival of Eid. After completing her degree, she has been involved in innovating new bakery at her father's bakery shop. She says by adding spices and seeds that are easily available in the market in Kashmir, she made these immunity-boosting cookies and other items which include Vitamin A, Vitamin E, B 6, Omega 3, Omega 6. A fresh lockdown has been imposed in parts of Kashmir after a spike in the number of coronavirus positive cases, which prompted authorities to reimpose restriction in Containment and Red Zones of the valley.

After the lockdown was lifted, people breathed a sigh of relief but locals were not following social distancing norms and other SOPs laid by the government with experts calling for an immediate lockdown to control the spread of this deadly virus.

Shops, business establishments, and offices remained shut with containment areas sealed with fences and barricades by the authorities to curb the movement of people. The decision to impose restrictions has been taken after the recommendations of experts, officials say.

"District Magistrate Srinagar Shahid Iqbal Choudhary issuing orders in this regard has directed for sealing off all these 88 red zones with strict enforcement of restrictions on public movement and activities of all sorts," a press release by the government said.

On Sunday, strict restrictions were ordered in 88 containment zones of Srinagar to deal with the growing cases in the city. The total number of positive cases in Srinagar has reached 1,708, out of which 1145 are active according to the latest data provided by the administration. The summer capital of the union territory Srinagar has 1,704 cases, the highest among 20 districts of J&K with 44 deaths so far.

A total of 10,513 people have been tested COVID positive since the outbreak which has worried the health experts with currently 4355 cases active positive in different hospitals. Apart from Srinagar, districts including Baramulla, Anantnag, and Kupwara have imposed a similar strategy to combat the deadly virus.

STRUGGLING ECONOMY

What's more worrying is that the economy of the erstwhile state has been badly hit post the abrogation of J&K special status which witnessed many days of curfew and restrictions. The business sector of the valley had pinned their hopes to this summer but the spread of coronavirus has brought down curtains on their hopes.

Parks and Gardens have been thrown open for public after remaining closed for almost four months in Jammu and Kashmir amid COVID-19. All this has come with a strict protocol including wearing face masks, using sanitizers, and maintain social distancing norms.

On Wednesday, people from different parts of Kashmir valley were seen entering these famous Mughal gardens in Srinagar with strict thermal screening. The move is being seen as an attempt to revive the tourism sector which has been hit badly during the last 10 months.

The administration is also looking to reopen the valley for tourists due to heavy losses to this sector. The reopening of gardens has brought joy on the faces of gardeners who despite hard times have been working to make them look beautiful.

"Floriculture activities happen round the year, so we work throughout. In fact, we prepare flowers for the display and luckily, we got a chance to open them for the public. Gardners and laborers who have worked hard are happy," Asif Ahmad, Assistant Floriculture officer told WION.

Located on the foothills of the Himalayan mountain range, the Nishat garden built by Mughals near the Dal lake also witnessed buzz after a long silence. Historians say after its completion in 1633, Mughal emperor Shah Jahan on seeing the garden expressed appreciation of its grandeur and beauty to his father-in-law Asif Khan, in the hope that he would gift it to him.

People have expressed happiness over the reopening of these places but have asked visitors to follow guidelines to stop the spread of coronavirus.

"The garden has opened after 4 months, so we are happy. Tourists haven't been coming as they were afraid due to COVID. The reopening will send a positive message," said Zaid, a local, who visited the garden.

Sajid Yusuf was 8-year-old when an incident changed his life forever and stole his childhood. Hailing from north Kashmir's Kupwara district, he says he saw his mother's blood on the walls after she was shot in the eye by terrorists just when his uncle was killed outside his house.

Sajid still remembers putting soil on his mother's grave when he was too young to understand pain. A 17-year-old event still sends shivers down his spine but now he shares grief with many like him who lost their loved ones to terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

Tanveer Ahmad Bhat's father was working with the special operations group, a strong anti-terror group formed in Jammu and Kashmir during the peak of terrorism in the valley in 1994. The aim of the group was to uproot terrorism from the erstwhile state.

In 1998, Tanveer says he was en route to his work when terrorists from the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen terror group attacked his vehicle and killed him. "22-years have passed no one came for our help. I ran from pillar to post to get some kind of help for my family but no one helped us," says the visibly angry son.

He complains why no relief was provided to the family.

Ali is old now and still struggles to narrate the horror that his family has been witness to. He says he has been finding it hard to manage his house due to poor earnings, adding that his son's killing made life miserable, as his eyes turn moist.

"My son would earn and we would eat. I have other kids too but it's very hard to earn a living in lockdown, no one came for our help. One of the killers of my son was later arrested and is behind bars," Ali says.

Yusuf's son, Sameer, managed a shop, which was the only means of earning for the family, near the deputy commissioner's office in Baramulla. One evening, a phone call asked him to come out only to get killed. His sick father says Sameer was shot with two bullets for no reason by terrorists.
