Ahead of the United States&nbsp;presidential election, American authorities are investigating some US citizens who had worked with or contributed to Russian state media, amid fears that Moscow's intelligence agencies are trying to muddy the waters of American politics through propaganda campaigns.

Citing official sources, the New York Times reported on Wednesday (Aug 22) that the FBI had raided the homes of two commentators who appear on Russian channels like RT, which broadcasts in English. One of them was a former advisor to ex-president Donald Trump.

The broad criminal investigation will look into whether several laws were violated, including one sanctioning Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, and another on lobbying for foreign countries and entities.

More than a month after narrowly surviving an assassination attempt, former US president, Donald Trump, on Wednesday (Aug 21) held his first outdoor campaign event, albeit with a little difference. Trump spoke from behind bulletproof glass at a rally in the swing state of North Carolina - suggesting that the Secret Service was not taking any half-measure in his security.&nbsp;

During the address, Trump, 78, called Harris the "most radical left person" to ever run for the White House.&nbsp;

"All over the world, our adversaries knew that America was not to be trifled with when I was your commander in chief," Trump said. "If comrade Kamala wins this November, World War III is virtually guaranteed to happen."

On Wednesday, Trump left the bulletproof stage and entered the crowd to check on an attendee who was suffering a medical issue. Experts believe that Trump, who relies heavily on the crowd for his rallies and their tempo, may not like the barrier between him and his supporters but the Secret Service would have forced him to go through it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Last month, the Secret Service admitted that it had denied&nbsp;requests for additional resources and manpower to protect Trump.&nbsp;The ex-president's team had requested more agents and magnetometers at large public events he attended, as well as extra snipers for outdoor venues.

DNC Day 2: 'Kamala Harris is more than ready for this moment', says Barack Obama

On Day 2 of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, former US President&nbsp;Barack Obama took the stage to support party nominee Kamala Harris.&nbsp;

Barack Obama maintained the momentum as he began his speech with a remark saying, “I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling fired up!”

“Even if I’m the only person stupid enough to speak after Michelle Obama,” the ex-president said while addressing the DNC on the second day of the event.

"My first major decision as a nominee turned out to be one of my best, choosing Joe Biden to serve as my vice president," Obama said.&nbsp;

“US will remember him as an outstanding president who defended democracy at a moment of great danger,” he said of Joe Biden, noting that in addition to calling him president, he was “even prouder to call him my friend.”

<h2>America is ready for a new chapter</h2>

“America’s ready for a better story. We are ready for a President Kamala Harris," said Obama while endorsing her at the DNC.

“Kamala Harris is ready for the job. This is someone who has dedicated her life to advocating for those who need a voice and a champion. As Michelle mentioned, Kamala wasn’t born into privilege," Obama added.

“She had to work for what she’s got, and she actually cares about what other people are going through. She’s not the neighbour running the leaf blower – she’s the neighbour rushing over to help when you need a hand,” further said the former president.

Obama also offered his assessment of Tim Walz, the Minnesota governor who is running alongside Kamala Harris.

“I really admire Tim. He’s exactly the kind of person who belongs in politics—someone who grew up in a small town, served his country, taught kids, coached football, and looked after his neighbors,” Obama said.

<h2>Obama criticises Trump for his 'strange obsession with crowd sizes'</h2>

After praising his friend Biden, Barack Obama turned to Donald Trump.

"Here’s a 78-year-old billionaire who has been incessantly complaining about his problems since he descended his golden escalator nine years ago. It’s been a continuous stream of grievances that has only worsened as he fears losing to Kamala," the former president said.

The Kamala Harris-Tim Walz campaign said on Saturday (Aug 17) that it planned to spend at least $370 million on digital and television ads between Labor Day and November 5 (the day of the US presidential election).

The Kamala Harris-Tim Walz campaign said on Saturday (Aug 17) that it planned to spend at least $370 million on digital and television ads between Labor Day and November 5 (the day of the US presidential election). In a memo, Deputy Campaign Managers Quentin Fulks and Rob Flaherty said that the campaign this weekend placed $170 million in TV reservations, which came on top of $200 million in digital reservations. What do the reservations include? Citing the campaign, a report by Bloomberg said that the reservations included time during major sporting events and “high-viewership moments” like the season premieres of Grey’s Anatomy and the Golden Bachelorette and were intended to introduce Harris to voters and not let Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump define her. Also read | Kamala Harris pledges to tackle costs, build houses, lower taxes in economy speech The report said that the Harris-Walz campaign placed more than $200 million in digital reservations on platforms like Hulu, Roku, Youtube, Spotify and Pandora. For August, Trump and his allied super-PACs booked about 60 per cent of the ad time, reversing the advertising advantage Democrats have had for most of the campaign. Trump-aligned Preserve America PAC launched its first round of advertising during the Olympics in July and plans to spend about $60 million through Labor Day, Bloomberg reported citing a source. Both campaigns injected millions of dollars Both campaigns have injected millions of dollars worth of television ads since Harris entered the presidential race. As of August 14, the presidential campaigns and their allies have already bought or reserved $247 million in ad spending to run this month, 19 per cent more than they did in all of August 2020 Harris surges ahead of Trump in new poll A recent poll suggested that Kamala Harris was starting to grow on North Carolina voters and they were more than willing to vote for her. This analysis came as Harris is touted to beat Trump in the region. This poll came right after Trump visited North Carolina's Ashville on Wednesday. Speaking to supporters in Asheville, Trump steered clear of broadsides challenging Harris' racial identity and spoke about policy in more detail than he has at other recent events. But he continued to throw personal insults at her, at one point calling her "stupid" and denigrating her laugh as a cackle. (With inputs from agencies)

Former president and Republican nominee Donald Trump has once again stirred up a controversy with personal attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris.

Trump commented on Vice President Kamala Harris’ appearance, despite pressure from GOP allies to concentrate on policy issues instead of personal attacks.

During a rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on Saturday (August 17), Trump deviated from his prepared speech to draw a comparison between his appearance and that of the Democratic presidential nominee.

"I say that I am much better looking. I'm a better-looking person than Kamala," said Trump.

Trump was apparently reacting to a Wall Street Journal column that mentioned Harris’s appearance as a political strength. He also claimed he mistook a Time Magazine cover illustration of Harris for actresses Sophia Loren or Elizabeth Taylor.

“You’re not allowed to say this anymore. You know, David, don’t ever get caught in this trap,” Trump advised Republican Senate candidate David McCormick, who was in the audience. “David, please don’t ever call a woman beautiful, because that will be the end of your political career.”

Social media users mocked Trump for focusing on personal insults. This is not the first time the Republican nominee has directed personal attacks at Harris.&nbsp;

Trump has often referred to Harris as a "radical liberal" and called her by multiple names, including "Kamabla," "Lyin' Kamala," and "Laffin Kamala."

At a news conference held at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club, Trump defended his decision to criticise Harris on a personal level.

"I think I am entitled to personal attacks. I don't have a lot of respect for [Harris]. I don't have a lot of respect for her intelligence, and I think she'll be a terrible president," Trump said.&nbsp;

Trump tried to justify his stance by accusing Harris of using the justice system against him and others. He also claimed that Harris had called him "weird." However, it was actually her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who initially described Republican policies as "weird" in late July.

Kamala Harris’ pivotal moment in US politics: What you need to know about the 2024 Democratic Convention

Former United States President Donald Trump has come under fire for claiming that the Presidential Medal of Freedom is "much better" than the highest US military decoration Medal of Honor.

Former United States President Donald Trump has come under fire for claiming that the Presidential Medal of Freedom is "much better" than the highest US military decoration Medal of Honor. Al Lipphardt, commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), slammed former president Trump for "asinine" comments regarding the Medal of Honor award. What did Donald Trump say? At a New Jersey campaign event on Thursday (Aug 15), Trump ignited controversy by claiming the Presidential Medal of Freedom is a "better" award than the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in the US Armed Forces. The Medal of Honor is given to service members who show "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty." In contrast, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is given to civilians for "exceptional contributions to the security or national interests of America, to world peace, or cultural or other significant public or private endeavours." Trump compared the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the Medal of Honor, stating, "It's the equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor. But the civilian version, it's actually much better because everyone that gets the Congressional Medal of Honor, they're soldiers." VFW, Kamala Harris' campaign hit at Trump VFW National Commander Al Lipphardt condemned Trump's remarks on Friday (Aug 16), which compared the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the Medal of Honor, according to The Hill. Lipphardt called the former president's comments as "asinine," stating that they "not only diminish the significance of our nation's highest award for valour but also crassly characterised the sacrifices of those who have risked their lives above and beyond the call of duty." Spokesperson Sarafina Chitika remarked that voters "owe it to our service members" not to choose Trump. She added, "Donald Trump knows nothing about service to anyone or anything but himself." “For him to insult Medal of Honor recipients, just as he has previously attacked Gold Star families, mocked prisoners of war, and referred to those who lost their lives in service to our country as ‘suckers’ and ‘losers,’ should remind all Americans that we owe it to our service members, our country, and our future to make sure Donald Trump is never our nation’s commander in chief again,” she added. Former US President Donald Trump has brought in an unexpected ally — former Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard — in preparation for an upcoming debate against Vice President Kamala Harris. According to sources familiar with Trump's schedule cited by the New York Times, Gabbard recently participated in a practice session at Trump’s private club and residence, Mar-a-Lago.

Gabbard, who left the Democratic Party after her 2020 presidential bid and has since become a popular figure among Trump’s supporters, has maintained a cordial relationship with the former president. At one point, she was even considered as a potential running mate for Trump.&nbsp;

Donald Trump brings in Tulsi Gabbard for debate preparation with Kamala Harris

Kamala&nbsp;Harris&nbsp;outlined proposals to cut taxes for most Americans, ban "price gouging" by grocers and build more affordable housing on Friday as part of the "opportunity economy" she plans to pursue if she wins the White House.

In her first major economy-focused speech as the Democratic presidential nominee,&nbsp;Harris&nbsp;pledged to introduce a new child tax credit of as much as $6,000 for families with infants, cut taxes for families with kids and lower prescription drug costs.

The vice president also called for the construction of 3 million new housing units over four years and a tax incentive for home builders who build homes for first-time buyers.

Harris&nbsp;told supporters at a rally in North Carolina, a state she hopes to win in the November&nbsp;5 election, that the US&nbsp;economy was strong but prices were still too high. She said she would be laser-focused on the middle class as president.

"Together we will build what I call an opportunity economy," she said. "Building up the middle class will be a defining goal of my presidency because I strongly believe when the middle class is strong, America is strong."

Her agenda may run into resistance from both corporations and Congress, which rejected similar proposals when they came from President Joe Biden.

Harris, who said she would reveal more details of her economic plans in the weeks to come, is aiming to draw a contrast with her opponent, Republican Donald Trump, on broad economic values, and specifically on tariffs and taxes.

The former president has proposed new across-the-board tariffs on imports, an idea&nbsp;Harris&nbsp;rejects.

"He wants to impose what is in effect a national sales tax on everyday products and basic necessities that we import from other countries,"&nbsp;Harris&nbsp;said. "That will devastate Americans."

"It will mean higher prices on just about every one of your daily needs: A Trump tax on gas. A Trump tax on food. A Trump tax on clothing. A Trump tax on over-the-counter medication."

In a call with reporters on Friday, Trump economic advisers Kevin Hassett and Stephen Moore argued that&nbsp;Harris' proposals would boost inflation and damage the economy. A proposal to offer as much as $25,000 to first-time homeowners would do little more than jack up home prices, they said.

Republicans fault Biden and&nbsp;Harris&nbsp;for presiding over an economy in which prices have risen and blame their policies for driving inflation.

Harris' plans are meant to address that by appealing to a broad segment of the working public who often see Republicans as better economic stewards and are anxious over both higher costs and their economic prospects.

Some of her policies, including ones on housing and groceries, have come under attack as ill-considered and overly liberal populism by Republicans and some industry groups.

The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimated that&nbsp;Harris' economic plan would increase deficits by a net $1.7 trillion over a decade, a number that could grow to $2 trillion if temporary housing policies were made permanent.

<h2>Food and housing</h2>

Harris' plan includes a federal ban on price gouging on food and groceries, which her campaign says aims to stop big corporations from unfairly exploiting consumers while generating excessive corporate profits.

As president, she would direct the Federal Trade Commission to impose "harsh penalties" on companies that break new limits on price gouging, campaign officials said.

"I know most businesses are creating jobs, contributing to our economy and playing by the rules,"&nbsp;Harris&nbsp;said. "But some are not, and that's just not right. And we need to take action when that is the case."

Progressive economic ideas poll well with voters, but they have proven tough to pass into law. Most of&nbsp;Harris' and Trump's economic priorities need to secure majority support in Congress. A child tax credit bill passed the House of Representatives but stalled in the Senate this year.

Her plan calls for a series of tax incentives and other measures to encourage building homes for first-time homebuyers and the $25,000 credit for such buyers.&nbsp;Harris&nbsp;also aims to expand rental assistance, ban rental price-fixing and stop Wall Street firms from buying homes in bulk.

Harris&nbsp;also is pushing to lower healthcare costs, cancel medical debt and highlight how the Biden administration negotiated down the prices of 10 top-selling prescription drugs used by Medicare by as much as 79 per cent.&nbsp;

Kamala Harris outlined proposals to cut taxes for most Americans, ban "price gouging" by grocers and build more affordable housing on Friday as part of the "opportunity economy" she plans to pursue if she wins the White House. In her first major economy-focused speech as the Democratic presidential nominee, Harris pledged to introduce a new child tax credit of as much as $6,000 for families with infants, cut taxes for families with kids and lower prescription drug costs. The vice president also called for the construction of 3 million new housing units over four years and a tax incentive for home builders who build homes for first-time buyers. Harris told supporters at a rally in North Carolina, a state she hopes to win in the November 5 election, that the US economy was strong but prices were still too high. She said she would be laser-focused on the middle class as president. "Together we will build what I call an opportunity economy," she said. "Building up the middle class will be a defining goal of my presidency because I strongly believe when the middle class is strong, America is strong." Her agenda may run into resistance from both corporations and Congress, which rejected similar proposals when they came from President Joe Biden. Harris, who said she would reveal more details of her economic plans in the weeks to come, is aiming to draw a contrast with her opponent, Republican Donald Trump, on broad economic values, and specifically on tariffs and taxes. The former president has proposed new across-the-board tariffs on imports, an idea Harris rejects. "He wants to impose what is in effect a national sales tax on everyday products and basic necessities that we import from other countries," Harris said. "That will devastate Americans." "It will mean higher prices on just about every one of your daily needs: A Trump tax on gas. A Trump tax on food. A Trump tax on clothing. A Trump tax on over-the-counter medication." In a call with reporters on Friday, Trump economic advisers Kevin Hassett and Stephen Moore argued that Harris' proposals would boost inflation and damage the economy. A proposal to offer as much as $25,000 to first-time homeowners would do little more than jack up home prices, they said. Republicans fault Biden and Harris for presiding over an economy in which prices have risen and blame their policies for driving inflation. The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimated that Harris' economic plan would increase deficits by a net $1.7 trillion over a decade, a number that could grow to $2 trillion if temporary housing policies were made permanent. Food and housing Harris' plan includes a federal ban on price gouging on food and groceries, which her campaign says aims to stop big corporations from unfairly exploiting consumers while generating excessive corporate profits. As president, she would direct the Federal Trade Commission to impose "harsh penalties" on companies that break new limits on price gouging, campaign officials said. "I know most businesses are creating jobs, contributing to our economy and playing by the rules," Harris said. "But some are not, and that's just not right. And we need to take action when that is the case." Progressive economic ideas poll well with voters, but they have proven tough to pass into law. Most of Harris' and Trump's economic priorities need to secure majority support in Congress. A child tax credit bill passed the House of Representatives but stalled in the Senate this year. Her plan calls for a series of tax incentives and other measures to encourage building homes for first-time homebuyers and the $25,000 credit for such buyers. Harris also aims to expand rental assistance, ban rental price-fixing and stop Wall Street firms from buying homes in bulk. Harris also is pushing to lower healthcare costs, cancel medical debt and highlight how the Biden administration negotiated down the prices of 10 top-selling prescription drugs used by Medicare by as much as 79 per cent. Harris is maintaining Biden's promise not to raise taxes on people who make $400,000 or less a year, and her campaign aims to draw a contrast on taxes with Trump, who slashed the corporate tax rate to 21 per cent from 35 per cent and implemented other tax breaks that are set to expire next year. Trump has promised to make the tax cuts permanent. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide.
