Donald Trump's latest gaffe: Calls Kamala Harris 'the president' at Michigan rally

Former US president Donald Trump was mocked on social media after he had a slip of the tongue during a rally in Michigan on Tuesday (Aug 20) where he referred to Kamala Harris as the 'president'.

Addressing a crowd of raucous Republican supporters, Trump flubbed his lines which his detractors quickly caught.

“And she's the president, and wants to be the President of the United States,” Trump said, before correcting himself andadding, “She's Vice President, she could do it.”

The Democrat supporters who usually had to contend with President Joe Biden making such gaffes, lapped up the opportunity to return the favour to Trump.

"That’s the sound of Trump’s defeat creeping in. He’s seen the data, and spoiler alert: it’s not looking good. He knows it, we know it—just waiting for him to admit it which will never happen," said one netizen, while another added: "Donald Trump is too old to run. He needs to step aside."

A third commented: "My guy is running on FUMES. Low energy. Take a nap, grandpa."

Trump mistakenly referring to his opponent as the president comes a couple of days after the Republican leader said he was much better looking than Harris.

"I'm much better looking than her," Trump said while criticising Time Magazine's illustrator for being "too generous" with a portrait ofHarris.

“Time Magazine doesn’t have a picture of her. They have this unbelievable artist drawing her,” he said. “They took a lot of pictures that didn’t work out so they hired a sketch artist.”

Previously, Trump said he was "entitled" to personallyattack Harris because he did not have a "lot of respect for her".

Former aide criticises Trump

Stephanie Grisham, ex-Trump press secretary, making an appearance on the second day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago claimed that the former president mocked his supporters.

“I wasn’t just a Trump supporter, I was a true believer. I was one of his closest advisers. Behind closed doors, Trump mocks his supporters. He calls them ‘basement dwellers," saidGrisham.

“He has no empathy, no morals and no fidelity to the truth,” Grisham added.

Having served Trump, Grisham also worked for Melania Trump as the press secretary before resigning in the wake of the January 6 insurrection attempt.
