I don't have a lot of respect for her intelligence, and I think she'll be a terrible president," he said further, attacking Harris in a fresh set of remarks.

The Biden administration this week has negotiated deals with major pharmaceutical companies to lower the prices of 10 of Medicare’s most widely used and expensive drugs. While federal officials have yet to disclose the exact new prices, the administration projections cited by the Associated Press claim that US taxpayers will save approximately $6 billion annually.

These estimates, however, are based on earlier projections.

What does it mean?

Despite the lack of immediate transparency, the expected price reductions are likely to benefit millions of older Americans who rely on these drugs for managing conditions such as diabetes, blood cancer, heart failure, and blood clots.

This deal marks a crucial milestone for the Medicare programme, which serves over 67 million older and disabled Americans. For decades, the federal government was prohibited from negotiating drug prices with pharmaceutical companies, a common practice among private insurers.

White House adviser Neera Tanden said: "This meant that drug companies could basically charge whatever they want for life-saving treatments people rely on, and all Americans paid the price."

Which drug prices will be lowered?

Among the drugs included in the negotiations are the blood thinners Xarelto and Eliquis and the diabetes medications Jardiance and Januvia. In 2023, Medicare spent $50 billion on these medications alone.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who cast the tie-breaking vote to pass the law enabling these negotiations, will play a key role in promoting the deal as part of her presidential campaign. She and President Joe Biden are scheduled to announce the new drug prices together on Thursday (August 15).

But there is a catch

While some pharmaceutical executives have suggested that the negotiations may not significantly impact their profits, the final drug prices are set to be released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services later on Thursday. However, these new prices will not take effect until 2026.

US Election 2024: Donald Trump slams Kamala Harris over economic policy, inflation

As US vice President Kamala Harris's popularity ratings show signs of picking up, her newly minted running mate Tim Walz is out on a campaign trip he had stormed through five Battleground states with Harris last week to introduce himself to the voters and this time he's out solo. Watch in for more details!

US Election 2024: Tim Walz to hold fundraisers in 5 states in whirlwind tour

Less than a month after stepping up as the Democratic presidential candidate, US Vice President Kamala Harris is gaining momentum in the race, moving ahead in polls and attracting large crowds at rallies across the United States. This week, the presumptive presidential candidate for the Democratic Party also landed on the cover of Time Magazine.

Kamala Harris' TIME cover has earned itself an unlikely admirer: Donald Trump, her political rival.

In his recent August 12 interview with Elon Musk on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Trump described Harris as a "beautiful woman".

So far, so good, right? What can be construed as problematic is that Trump did not stop there. The Republican widely known for his anti-immigrant and at times blatantly racist comments went on to compare Harris' beauty with his wife Melania Trump.

Was Trump whitewashing Kamala Harris?

Just a few days back, Donald Trump questioned Kamala Harris's racial identity as a Black woman.

In a controversial interaction with African American journalists in Chicago on Jul 31, former President Trump suggested that Kamala Harris had "turned Black" for political purposes.

He falsely claimed Kamala had initially identified as Indian, but "all of a sudden, she made a turn, and she became a Black person."

Now, speaking to Musk, he praised Harris' beauty, comparing her to his wife, former First Lady Melania Trump.

"She looks like the most beautiful actress ever to live," Trump remarked, seemingly downplaying her racial identity by comparing her to a different standard of beauty.

"It was a drawing, and actually, she looked very much like a great first lady, Melania," he said.

His comment can be seen merely as superficial praise. However, Trump also said that, "She didn't look like Kamala," which can also be seen as an attempt to whitewash Kamala Harris' identity as a person of colour and a try to box her into the traditional, Eurocentric standards of beauty.

"But of course, she's a beautiful woman, so we'll leave it at that," added Trump.

Despite this compliment, Trump as usual didn't hold back on criticising Harris and her campaign.

He accused the media of giving Harris a "free ride" and not scrutinising her views adequately since she became the Democratic candidate. He also took a jab at Harris for avoiding interviews, a move that has been seized upon by Republicans as a sign of reluctance to engage with the media.

Trump's criticisms extended beyond Harris' media appearances. In the same conversation with Musk, he accused Harris of attempting to mimic his policies, specifically citing her recent pledge to eliminate tax on tips—a policy Trump had previously proposed. He further claimed that Harris was trying to position herself as "more Trump than Trump," a tactic he dismissed as insincere.

The interview, which was delayed due to a reported cyberattack on X, also saw Trump veer into discussions on global warming, nuclear proliferation, and even the idea of moving to Venezuela if he loses the upcoming election.

The agents taped over the security camera at the back porch and helped themselves in after breaking in through the door. They used the restroom ate the mints on the counter and left the place without cleaning or locking the door.

Joe Biden warns of ‘bloodbath’, calls Donald Trump a ‘genuine danger’ to democracy: ‘Mark my words...’

Republican presidential candidate and ex-US president Donald Trump in a press conference recounted his scary experience of nearly dying in an alleged helicopter crash, where he claimed he was travelling with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. Trump made these claims in response to a question about the relations between Brown and Democratic presidential hopeful and Vice President Kamala Harris.

“I know Willie Brown very well. In fact, I went down in a helicopter with him. We thought maybe this is the end. We were in a helicopter going to a certain location together, and there was an emergency landing,” Trump told reporters gathered at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

“This was not a pleasant landing, and Willie was, he was a little concerned. So I know him, I know him pretty well. I mean, I haven’t seen him in years,” Trump went on. "I went down in a helicopter with him. We thought maybe this is the end,” the ex-president claimed.

‘My helicopter went down,’ Trump recounts scary crash that ‘never happened’

With less than three months to go for the United States presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris is ahead of former US President Donald Trump by four points in three key states, according to recent polling by The New York Times/Siena College.

According to the poll, which was released early on Saturday (Aug 10), Harris is now ahead of the former president in the US states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. In the hypothetical contest, Harris received 50 per cent of the vote against 46 per cent for Trump. among likely voters in all three states.

In the same swing states, Harris' numbers show a notable improvement over those of President Joe Biden.

Earlier this year, in two different NYT/Siena surveys conducted in Pennsylvania, Biden received 45 per cent of the vote compared to 48 per cent for Trump.

In April and early May polls, however, the incumbent president was ahead of his Republican opponent in Michigan (47 per cent to 46 per cent) but behind Trump in Wisconsin (46 per cent to 47 per cent).

Democrats have been very welcoming and supportive of Harris since she launched her presidential campaign last month after Biden dropped out from the 2024 presidential race. Earlier this week, she picked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) as her running mate.

According to her team, 14,000 people showed up for her Tuesday (Aug 6) event in Philadelphia and another 15,000 showed up for her Wednesday (Aug 7) night rally in Detroit.

When asked if they were pleased with their party's nominee, the majority of poll participants responded positively.

When it came to party satisfaction, Democrats were more inclined than Republicans to indicate they were happy with their nominee (87 per cent to 79 per cent). According to the survey, just 12 per cent of Democrats and 19 per cent of Republicans expressed dissatisfaction.

According to the study, almost 60 per cent of independent voters voiced satisfaction, while only 37 per cent disagreed.

It is worth mentioning here, according to an Ipsos poll published on Thursday found Harris has widened her lead over Trump since late July. The US VP leads Trump 42% to 37%, compared with a July 22-23 Reuters/Ipsos survey that showed her up 37% to 34% over Trump.

The Palm Beach news conference by Trump on Thursday was his first public appearance since Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate on Tuesday.

Trump and Harris to debate on Sep 10; Trump calls for two additional debates

A group of some 1,200 technology workers vowed to support Kamala Harris's presidential bid, part of an effort to demonstrate wide industry support in Silicon Valley for Democrats outside its most vocal investor class.

Tech4Kamala plans to release the signatories of its letter in support of Harris later Thursday night, according to Bloomberg. A letter labelled her an "archetypical innovator," a "champion of technology" who "worked to expand access to STEM education, promote entrepreneurship and close the digital equity gap."

Although those who signed on did so in their personal capacity, not as representatives of their employers, they work for a number of large tech companies, including Apple, Meta Platforms, and Salesforce Inc. Freelancers, founders, VCs, and people NFT working in technology-adjacent fields like law and real estate appear on the list of names.

"We have an incredible opportunity to mobilise our community of over 7 million tech workers to show that our industry is not just about a handful of billionaires, but about the collective power of tech professionals," said Shannon Nash, one of the organisers of the letter.

Nash is a chief financial officer at a drone company. Other organisers include communications executive Edda Collins Coleman, entrepreneur Julia Collins and human relations executive Felicia Mayo.

The letter comes as a group of more than 700 venture capitalists and investors announced their own letter in support of Harris, while another set of VCs threw their weight behind former President Donald Trump. Although the industry has traditionally tilted left, a vocal set of conservatives this election cycle in Silicon Valley — including Elon Musk, investor David Sacks, and Sequoia Partner Shaun Maguire — have cut checks on Harris's opponent.

The groups Tech4Kamala and VCs for Kamala will join forces to hold a mixer for Harris in Chicago on Aug. 21, organisers said.

The United Auto Workers (UAW) president, Shawn Fain, has levelled a scathing attack on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's close ties with billionaire Elon Musk while actively campaigning for Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.

Fain's criticisms come at a time of heightened political tensions, with the upcoming November election looming large. The UAW leader's strategic decision to align with Harris and denounce Trump's association with Musk is a clear indication of the union's priorities and the importance it places on maintaining a strong relationship with the Democratic party.

During his campaign appearances, Fain did not mince his words when addressing Trump's relationship with Musk. "For months, Donald Trump has gone around trashing our state, trashing our industry, trashing the American autoworker, saying he was against electric vehicles. And then something happened," Fain said, citing reports that Musk had planned to commit around $45 million a month to a new pro-Trump super political-action committee.

Fain's remarks were a direct reference to the Wall Street Journal's report, which suggested that Musk was poised to provide substantial financial support to Trump's political endeavours. However, both Musk and Trump later refuted the claims, stating that the Tesla CEO had never pledged any such donation.

Nonetheless, Fain seized the opportunity to attack Trump, labelling him a "sellout" and accusing the former president of changing his tune on electric vehicles after Musk's alleged endorsement. "And all of a sudden, guess what, Trump changed his tune," Fain said, highlighting the perceived hypocrisy in Trump's stance on the electric vehicle industry.

Trump's history of opposition to electric car mandates and criticism of EV policies under the Biden administration has been well-documented. However, in a recent rally, the former president claimed to be "for electric cars," attributing his newfound support to Musk's endorsement. "I'm for electric cars. I have to be, because Elon endorsed me very strongly. So I have no choice," Trump stated, though he added that he still supports other types of vehicles, including gas-powered and hybrid cars.

Fain's scathing critique of Trump's relationship with Musk is a strategic move by the UAW to align itself with the Democratic party and, more specifically, Harris, who recently became the Democratic presidential candidate after Biden stepped aside. The union's endorsement of Harris is a clear indication of its desire to maintain a strong partnership with the Democratic administration, which it believes will be more favourable to the interests of autoworkers.
