After the United States Supreme Court on Wednesday (August 28) declined to reinstate US President Joe Biden administration's recent effort to cancel loans for millions of borrowers, Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris said that she will continue to fight for student debt forgiveness.

Why are Republican-led states opposing the SAVE plan?

Over a dozen Republican-led states together had taken legal action against the federal government over the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan, claiming it could cost at least $475 billion over a decade. Meanwhile, the Congressional Budget Office has estimated the cost of the loan forgiveness plan to be $276 billion.

Recently, the Supreme Court refused a Justice Department request to overturn a ruling from the 8th US Circuit Court of Appeals, which had blocked Biden's loan forgiveness plan. This plan was introduced by the White House last year, after another student loan relief proposal from the incumbent president, which aimed to forgive up to $20,000 in debt for millions of Americans, was struck down by the Supreme Court.

In an unsigned order, the Supreme Court asked for a comprehensive ruling on the SAVE plan by the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals "with appropriate dispatch." Student loan forgiveness was a significant point during Biden's 2020 campaign, and Harris said that if she is elected in November, she would continue with the current president's strategy for debt relief.

"@POTUS and I have canceled nearly $170 billion in student debt for almost 5 million Americans. We are also fighting to defend our SAVE Plan, which has lowered payments for millions of Americans. We won't stop fighting to build an economy that works for every American," Harris wrote on X, previously known as Twitter.

Key features of the SAVE plan for student debt relief

The SAVE plan is designed to provide relief to borrowers by reducing the required monthly payments on federal loans from 10 per cent to 5 per cent of their discretionary income. Those earning less than 225 per cent of the federal poverty line, or $32,800 annually, would not be required to make payments on their loans.

Additionally, the plan would allow for loan balances of $12,000 or less to be forgiven after 10 years of timely payments. In April, the Biden administration announced that nearly eight million people had signed up for the SAVE plan, with 4.5 million borrowers having monthly payments reduced to $0.

Former United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday (Aug 27) blamed Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden for the 13 July assassination attempt. Trump said the duo made it difficult for the Secret Service to protect him. The Republican presidential candidate made this claim on a television show, hosted by Phil McGraw. Georgia Democrats have filed a lawsuit against that state's election board over a new election certification process. Democrats want to block the new rules, which may give local officials the power to delay the certification of election results.

As the 2024 United States presidential election is getting closer, the focus is on a select group of so-called 'swing states' that will likely determine the outcome of the race. Approximately 240 million Americans are eligible to vote in the presidential elections and these battleground states — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — will be crucial in deciding who will become the next president.

What are swing states?

Generally speaking, swing states or battleground states are famous for their lack of predictable voting patterns, making them highly contested by both Democrats and Republicans. In the final months leading up to the election, both campaigns concentrate their efforts on these regions, where a relatively small number of undecided voters can swing the result in favour of either candidate, in this year's case Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

These battlegrounds are shaping up to be focal points due to their unique political and social dynamics. For instance, issues such as immigration, abortion, and economic performance particularly resonate in these states.

Why are they called swing states? It is because of their voting pattern in most of the past elections. These states don’t vote for the party, they vote for the policies, which is not the case with non-swing states.

In Arizona, for example, the debate over immigration policy and recent controversies surrounding abortion access are likely to play a very important role.

These issues have become rallying points for both candidates, with Trump criticising Vice President Kamala Harris' record on immigration and promising significant policy changes if re-elected.

Similarly, Georgia’s significance is amplified by its historical context and demographic composition. The state has witnessed intense scrutiny over election integrity in the last election and has a substantial African-American population that played a crucial role in incumbent Joe Biden’s 2020 victory.

Economic issues are also prominent in these key states because most of them are struggling post-Covid pandemic.

Several of these states have high unemployment rates, which presents a significant challenge for Democrats, currently in power. Trump’s promises of lower taxes and reduced regulations resonate with voters concerned about economic stagnation.

Pennsylvania, too, is grappling with inflation and rising living costs, which could sway voter sentiment as both candidates focus on economic relief measures.

In Michigan, the focus has shifted to foreign policy and its impact on local voters.

Biden's support for Israel, amidst its ongoing conflict with Hamas and the rest of the West Asian region, has created a backlash, particularly among the state's Arab-American community. This sentiment is being leveraged by Trump, who continues to criticise Biden’s handling of international affairs.

North Carolina and Wisconsin also remain in focus, with their tight polling results and historical trends making them unpredictable. North Carolina’s recent polling suggests a highly competitive race, and Trump’s choice to hold a significant rally there underscores its importance.

Wisconsin, with its narrow margins of victory in past elections, remains a critical battleground where every vote matters.

So when we look at it overall, the outcome of the 2024 US election will depend on these swing states. Their diverse issues and competitive nature make them the epicentres of political strategy and voter engagement.

US elections: What are swing states? Will they decide fate of 2024 presidential contenders Harris and Trump?

Tulsi Gabbard, who ran for president as a Democrat just four years ago, endorsed former US President Donald Trump’s bid for the White House on Monday against Kamala Harris.

With just 70 days to go for presidential elections the swing state is back in the news and this time for its own election rule. Georgia state election board has adopted a new rule that allows officials to refuse to clarify and certify an election, what this means is that some local election boards can choose to refuse to certify the results and the immediate after effect would be a delay in finalizing poll results.

US Elections 2024: Former US President Donald Trump hints at reconsidering debate

As the Biden-Harris administration prepares to unveil its final implementation plans for substantial tariff increases on certain Chinese imports, U.S. industries are actively lobbying for modifications to the proposed measures. The administration faces a delicate balancing act between maintaining a strong stance on China trade and addressing domestic concerns about potential economic impacts.

President Biden initially announced in May a series of tariff hikes, including a quadrupling of duties on Chinese electric vehicles to 100%, doubling tariffs on semiconductors and solar cells to 50%, and introducing new 25% tariffs on lithium-ion batteries and other strategic goods. These measures were aimed at protecting U.S. firms from what the administration perceives as Chinese excess production.

Originally slated for implementation on August 1, the tariffs were delayed until September to allow the U.S. Trade Representative's office to review over 1,100 public comments. The final determination is expected by the end of August, marking a crucial decision point for the administration.

The timing of this decision is particularly sensitive, coming after Vice President Kamala Harris emerged as the Democratic Party's presidential nominee following Biden's decision to step aside in late July. The administration must navigate the political implications carefully, as any perceived softening on China trade could invite criticism from Republicans, while proceeding with the original hikes might draw complaints about increased costs from various sectors, including some Democrats in Congress.

Several industries have voiced concerns and requested modifications to the proposed tariffs. The Port of New York and New Jersey highlighted the potential impact of a 25% levy on Chinese-made ship-to-shore cranes, noting that it would significantly increase costs for already ordered equipment. Democratic senators from Virginia and Georgia have echoed these concerns, calling for exemptions on existing crane orders.

The automotive sector has also weighed in, with Ford Motor requesting a reduction in proposed tariffs on artificial graphite, a crucial component in electric vehicle battery production. Autos Drive America, representing foreign-brand automakers, advocated for stable tariff rates on batteries, modules, cells, and critical minerals through at least 2027 to support ongoing investments in U.S. production and foster consumer adoption of electric vehicles.

In the medical field, concerns have been raised about the planned 50% tariff on syringes, with senators warning about potential disruptions to supplies for infant feeding.

However, not all industries are seeking reductions. Some, like Finnish stainless steelmaker Outokumpu, which operates a mill in Alabama, have expressed support for increased tariffs on Chinese-made steel. The company even suggested extending higher duties to all steel products melted and poured in China but processed in other countries to prevent tariff circumvention.

The administration's decision comes at a time of ongoing diplomatic efforts to manage U.S.-China relations. U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is set to meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in the same week, aiming to keep tensions in check as the November U.S. election approaches.

China has already vowed retaliation against what it terms "bullying" tariff hikes, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi suggesting that some in the U.S. may be "losing their minds" over the trade measures.

Kamala Harris' historic haul: Democratic Party nominee raises over $540 million, mostly from first-time donors

Donald Trump's campaign for the November elections might be on shaky ground after the culmination of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, his pollsters have warned.

According to the latest CNN report, Tony Fabrizio and Travis Tunis - two of Trump's pollsters, wrote a concerning memo, saying that they foresaw an extended honeymoon period for Vice President Kamala Harris who replaced Joe Biden in the presidential race last month.

“Post-DNC we will likely see another small (albeit temporary) bounce for Harris in the public polls. Post-Convention bounces are a phenomenon that happens after most party conventions,” the memo says.

“So don’t be surprised to see Harris get a temporary 2 to 3 point bump,” it added.

The pollsters urged the Trump supporters to keep their 'eye on the ball', referring to the states where the Republican leader had a greater chance of winning.

“The other thing to keep in mind is that while the media is going to focus on the national polls, we need to keep our eye on the ball – that is the polling in our target states. Our goal is to get to 270 (Electoral College votes) and winning these states is how we do it.”

Trump campaign worried about Kamala Harris' 'extended honeymoon period' in prez race

In a critical campaign stop in Las Vegas, Republican nominee Donald Trump laid out his economic agenda, focusing on renewing the expiring tax cuts from his 2017 tax law. These cuts, set to expire next year, are estimated to cost 4.6 Trillion Dollars if extended. This could pose a significant challenge to the federal deficit.

Former United States President Donald Trump, in his latest Truth Social post, raised doubts about Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris' eligibility to run for the presidency. He said that Harris securing the Democratic Party's nomination without winning the primary poses a "threat to democracy."

Trump posted these comments on his Truth Social platform, where he referred to Harris as the "Weakest Presidential Candidate in History on Crime."

'Threat to Democracy'

In his post, Trump stated, "Kamala Harris is the Weakest Presidential Candidate in History on Crime. She's allowed millions of people to pour through our Borders, many from prisons, mental institutions and, indeed, terrorists, coming in at levels never seen before.

"What gives her the right to run for President? She got no votes to Biden's 14 Million. She failed in her previous attempt, was the first one out of 22 people to quit, never made it to Iowa, and now she's a Presidential Candidate? This is a Threat to Democracy!"

The incumbent vice president became the leading Democratic candidate ahead of the presidential election after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race on July 21 and endorsed her. Although Biden had won the Democratic primary, he exited the race following significant pressure from his party, with growing concerns over his age and mental fitness at 81.

Joe Biden was taken out by coup

Earlier this week, during a news conference at the US-Mexico border in Arizona, Trump referred to Harris replacing Biden as the presumptive Democratic candidate as a "coup."

He commented, "It's a very sad time for this country in many ways. We had a candidate—I was no fan of Joe Biden—but the way he was taken out was a coup."

Kamala Harris leading against Trump by 3.7 points

According to a recent analysis by the election website FiveThirtyEight, published on Friday (Aug 23), Harris holds a 3.7-point lead over Trump.

The polling data shows Harris with 47.3 per cent of the vote, compared to 43.6 per cent for Trump, with independent candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr trailing at 4.7 per cent.

Independent presidential candidate, RFK Jr, on Friday said that he would suspend his campaign, and endorsed the former president.

Former United States President Donald Trump, in his latest Truth Social post, raised doubts about Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris' eligibility to run for the presidency. He said that Harris securing the Democratic Party's nomination without winning the primary poses a "threat to democracy." Trump posted these comments on his Truth Social platform, where he referred to Harris as the "Weakest Presidential Candidate in History on Crime." 'Threat to Democracy' In his post, Trump stated, "Kamala Harris is the Weakest Presidential Candidate in History on Crime. This is a Threat to Democracy!" Also read: Knife attack in Germany: 'Perpetrator aimed specifically for people's throats' The incumbent vice president became the leading Democratic candidate ahead of the presidential election after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race on July 21 and endorsed her. Although Biden had won the Democratic primary, he exited the race following significant pressure from his party, with growing concerns over his age and mental fitness at 81. Joe Biden was taken out by coup Earlier this week, during a news conference at the US-Mexico border in Arizona, Trump referred to Harris replacing Biden as the presumptive Democratic candidate as a "coup." He commented, "It's a very sad time for this country in many ways. We had a candidate—I was no fan of Joe Biden—but the way he was taken out was a coup." Kamala Harris leading against Trump by 3.7 points According to a recent analysis by the election website FiveThirtyEight, published on Friday (Aug 23), Harris holds a 3.7-point lead over Trump. (With inputs from agencies)
