Biden's West Asia visit: US President to meet Lapid, Bennett and Netanyahu in Israel

US President Joe Biden arrives in Israel to kick off a high-stakes trip to the Middle East dominated by efforts to persuade Gulf allies to pump more oil and bring Israel and Saudi Arabia closer together.

The Full Context: Decoding President Joe Biden's West Asia trip

US President Joe Biden landed in the Gulf region on Wednesday to kick start his first trip there since taking office.

The president’s first is Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where Biden is expected to meet Mohammed bin Salman on Friday. The meeting is significant considering that the relations between US and Saudi nosedived following the revelations that dissident journalist and US resident Jamal Khashoggi was killed at the best of the prince in 2018.

Sticking points between US and Saudi

Biden's trip to Saudi Arabia is being perceived as part of efforts to stabilise oil markets which have been rattled by the war in Ukraine, by re-engaging with a country that has been a key strategic ally of the United States for decades and a major supplier of oil.

The treatment of journalists will also be a focal point when Biden visits Saudi Arabia. US intelligence believes that the kingdom's crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, likely approved the killing of Jamal Khashoggi.

Dozens of activists, writers, moderate clerics and economists remain imprisoned for their criticism of Mohammed bin Salman.

Apart from that, oil and energy discussions will likely rule the roost as prices skyrocket due to the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

Energy analysts say drivers shouldn't get their hopes up. If the public is looking for lower gasoline prices after this trip, I think they're bound to be disappointed, said Samantha Gross, director of the energy security and climate initiative at the Brookings Institution.

Israel-Palestine conflict

Biden will then visit Israeli in a bid to broaden the cooperation against Iran.

Israel's caretaker Prime Minister Yair Lapid, who took office less than two weeks ago, has said talks "will focus first and foremost on the issue of Iran."

Israel expanded its regional reach with US backing in 2020, when it formalised ties with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco -- breakthroughs that came after its peace accord with Jordan, in 1994, and Egypt in 1979.

Biden is expected to visit one of Israel's missile defence installations as he tries to reassure Israelis that the US is committed to the country's protection.

India angle

Even though Biden’s focus will be to strategically realign US interests in West Asia, he will be convening a virtual summit with the leaders of Israel, India and the United Arab Emirates under a new moniker the I2U2.

It might seem like an unlikely collection of countries, but there are hopes for productive collaboration.

Navdeep Suri, a former Indian ambassador to the UAE, told AP news agency that the initiative is intended to bring together Israeli technology, UAE capital and Indian skills.

"We are seeing a churn in the region and for India, it is better to be on the table rather than off the table, he added.

Ned Price, a spokesman for the US State Department, said there's a lot of opportunity for deepening relationships.

Joe Biden lands in West Asia as US looks for strategic realignment

In the wake of the Supreme Court ruling that invalidated the legal right to abortion, the US Justice Department on Tuesday (July 12) announced the formation of a task force to find methods to protect reproductive rights. This Reproductive Rights Task Force, which will be led by Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta, will “monitor and evaluate” state and local laws that might restrict access to reproductive healthcare, outlaw drugs that cause abortions or penalise federal employees who provide reproductive health services permitted by the federal law, CNN reported.

Gupta in a statement said, “The Court abandoned 50 years of precedent and took away the constitutional right to abortion, preventing women all over the country from being able to make critical decisions about our bodies, our health, and our futures. The Justice Department is committed to protecting access to reproductive services.”

This announcement comes after the US president signed an executive order on Friday defending abortion rights and urged the Justice Department to “much like they did in the civil rights era, to do something, to do everything in their power to protect these women seeking to invoke their rights." The Biden administration has been working across federal agencies to reverse Roe v. Nevertheless, in light of the court’s decision, the President is unable to take any steps to reinstate the country’s right to an abortion, and the president has openly admitted hate he has few alternatives for increasing access to the procedures. The Democrats and advocates are pressurising the White House to take a stronger stance to codify abortion access.

The Biden Administration declared on Monday (July 11) that healthcare providers must provide abortion services if a mother’s life is in danger irrespective of any state laws in such cases. This advice came after a few days when President Joe Biden issued an executive order to make it easier to get abortion services in the wake of the Supreme Court’s reversing of Roe v. Wade judgement last month. Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, on Monday declared a public health emergency would not necessarily free up resources, citing the government’s costly responses to COVID-19 and monkeypox, Reuters reported.

The Emergency Medical Treatment Active Labor Act (EMTALA) defines a medical emergency that requires immediate medical attention. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, abortion is a “stabilising treatment,” that doctors are required to offer that treatment. In addition to this protecting medical staff while providing legally required abortion services in such circumstances, EMTALA mandates that medical facilities identify whether a patient seeking treatment may be in labor or in a situation of a medical emergency.

Roe vs Wade: Biden administration says doctors must provide abortion services if mother’s life is in danger

Is Joe Biden too old to be president?

It's a question that has provided ample fodder for Republicans and right-wing outlets, while Democrats and most of the American media have been reluctant to broach it.

But as the oldest person ever elected to the top US office prepares for a grueling Middle East tour, debate is mounting over his apparent desire to run again in 2024.

The issue puts Democrats in a difficult position as there is no clear alternative to Biden -- who turns 80 on November 20.

"He's fit to be president right now. But he's too old for the next election," The Atlantic concluded in recent article, while sharply criticizing right-wing claims that Biden is suffering from dementia.

Disenchantment with Biden runs deep inside his own camp, with a New York Times poll released Monday showing that 64 per cent of Democratic voters would prefer another candidate in 2024. His age was cited as the main reason for those who want a change.

The president would be 82 at the beginning of a second term, and 86 at its conclusion. By comparison, Ronald Reagan was 77 when he left office in 1989.

Biden's "age has become an uncomfortable issue for him and his party," The New York Times wrote on Saturday, describing a White House that has become protective, even anxious.

Like his predecessors, Biden has exhausting responsibilities, from the war in Ukraine and runaway inflation to gun violence plaguing the country and a fiercely conservative Supreme Court.

Quiet weekends

There are certainly many Americans who envy his health, with a checkup last November concluding that he is a "vigorous" man suffering from mild problems with acid reflux and arthritis.

But his appearance betrays the heavy toll taken by the office: his white hair is increasingly thin, his gait cautious.

The White House has several times had to walk back inopportune remarks by the president on sensitive diplomatic issues.

Biden gives fewer news conferences and interviews than his predecessors, preferring to publish op-eds in newspapers, the content of which can be carefully controlled.

On the weekends, he often disappears to one of his two homes in Delaware for two or three days. White House correspondents only see him once, at a distance, when he goes to mass.

The president is far from the exception in American politics, where many key players are over 70, including his predecessor Donald Trump, who is currently 76.

"There are many people in their 80s, and even 90s, that are as good and sharp as ever. Biden is not one of them, but it has little to do with his age. In actuality, life begins at 80!" Trump wrote on his social media platform.

Beyond health issues, there is also the political question of how a president born during World War II can remain in touch with younger Americans.

Hundreds of abortion rights protesters waved banners and chanted Saturday outside the White House to demand the president take stronger action to protect access to the procedure recently revoked by the Supreme Court.

The estimated 1,000-strong crowd of mainly women shouted slogans like "My body, my choice" and some sat down on the sidewalk in pouring rain, with police standing by.

With President Joe Biden spending the weekend at his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware a few hours away, demonstrators called on him to do more to combat the June 24 Supreme Court ruling overturning the Roe v Wade decision of 1973, which enshrined the right to abortion in the United States.

"Stand up, Joe Biden," said Becca, 37, who traveled more than two hours to Washington from Virginia. She carried a banner reading, "Abortion on demand without apology."

She said an executive order Biden signed on Friday aiming to help women access abortion pills and travel to states where they can still get an abortion was insufficient.

"Fix this! This executive order that he put out wasn't enough," said Becca, who declined to give her last name.

"I want a world that wasn't the world that my grandmother had to live in. My mom already fought for this in the streets. We shouldn't have to be here," she added.

Another woman, Christine, came to the rally with her three daughters, one in her 20s and the other two in their teens.

"We really feel that he needs to explore the fullest extent of his power of the executive branch to ensure that women retain their rights, their reproductive rights," Christine, 50, said.

"And I am here to ensure that my daughters don't have to go back 50 years in time to the days where abortions were happening in back alleys," added Christine, who also declined to give her last name.

Biden, whose room for maneuver on the issue is limited, has come under fire for perceived inaction since the court ruling.

As he signed the executive order Friday, he called on Americans to vote en masse and elect pro-choice lawmakers in November and give him firm control of Congress, so he can codify abortion rights into federal law and bypass the Supreme Court ruling.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has refuted claims that Russia's airstrikes on his country had been "paused". The war-torn country's President in his nightly address on Sunday said that there was no let-up in air strikes from the aggressor Russia, on Ukraine. His statement comes after officials in Ukraine's Donetsk region, said that at least fifteen people have been killed and an additional two dozen were feared to be trapped under the rubble after Russian Uragan rockets hit a five-storey apartment block. As per Zelensky the death toll from the attack in the Donetsk town of Chasiv Yar was likely to rise.

The baby formula scarcity the US state of Michigan may ease up with the resumption of operations at a crucial baby formula plant that was shut down by torrential rains last month. The largest manufacturer of baby formula in the US, Abbott Laboratories, stopped its production at its main facility in Sturgis, Michigan, on June 16 due to storms that caused severe flooding. This happened just two weeks after it started its production after being shut down in February as a result of an examination that discovered contamination at the facility, reported by the Guardian.

John Koval, Abbott spokesperson, said that production has resumed for EleCare, a specialised formula for infants with digestive or food allergies, on July 1. He further added that the production of "Similac," a leading product, will be resumed soon.

US baby formula shortage: Abbott’s Michigan plant to resume production after halt due to flooding

US President Joe Biden will next week embark on a controversial visit to Saudi Arabia. On Saturday the leader said that during the visit he aims to "strengthen a strategic partnership" with Saudi Arabia. However, he assured that he plans to hold true to "fundamental American values". During his four-day-long trip (from July 13 to July 16) to West Asia, Biden will also pay a visit to Israel and the West Bank, which, in his words, will "start a new and more promising chapter of America's engagement" in the Middle East. While in Saudi Arabia Biden is likely to push for more Saudi oil output in the hope of curbing skyrocketing fuel costs and inflation at home.

"I know that there are many who disagree with my decision to travel to Saudi Arabia. My views on human rights are clear and long-standing, and fundamental freedoms are always on the agenda when I travel abroad, as they will be during this trip," Biden wrote said an opinion piece that appeared in the Washington Post on Saturday.

His visit also signals a significant shift in the United States' outlook towards the Kingdom and apparent abandonment of efforts to isolate the kingdom's de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, over the horrifying murder of a dissident, Jamal Khashoggi.

As a presidential candidate, Biden in 2018 had claimed that the murder and dismemberment of Khashoggi has turned Saudi Arabia into a "pariah."

Last month, Biden had sought to distance himself from mentions of the Saudi crown prince and had emphasised to reporters that his trip includes meeting with King Salman and his entourage.

But this week, the White House announced that he will visit MBS as a member of that larger delegation while on the trip.

The US president wrote in his op-ed, "As president, it is my job to keep our country strong and secure."

"We have to counter Russia’s aggression, put ourselves in the best possible position to outcompete China, and work for greater stability in a consequential region of the world," he continued.

"To do these things, we have to engage directly with countries that can impact those outcomes. Saudi Arabia is one of them, and when I meet with Saudi leaders on Friday."

As a presidential candidate, Biden in 2018 had claimed that the murder and dismemberment of Khashoggi has turned Saudi Arabia into a "pariah." On Thursday (July 7th), United Kingdom premier Boris Johnson stepped down from his position as the leader of the Conservative Party. His resignation has paved the way for new leadership. The embattled PM will stay on till a successor is chosen. Johnson, who resigned as Tory leader after a string of scandals and the exodus of his supporters, sparked strong reactions from many nations and world leaders and caused a division of opinion on the international scene. While some expressed their "sadness", others seemed to look forward to Johnson's absence.

Let's take a look at some of the key reactions:

United States

The US President said that his country and the United Kingdom are the "closest of allies" and that the relationship between the two nations and their people "remains strong and enduring".

Making no mention of the outgoing Johnson, Biden said "I look forward to continuing our close cooperation with the government of the United Kingdom."

He made mentioned the Russia-Ukraine war and the two nations "maintaining a strong and united approach to supporting the people of Ukraine as they defend themselves against Putin's brutal war on their democracy, and holding Russia accountable for its actions."

European Union

The United Kingdom and European Union have had tense relations for quite some time now, all thanks to Johnson's steady championing of Brexit. Following the UK PM's resignation appointment former top EU negotiator for Brexit Michel Barnier tweeted "The departure of Boris Johnson opens a new page in relations with Britain."

"May it be more constructive, more respectful of commitments made, in particular regarding peace and stability in Northern Ireland, and more friendly with partners in the EU. Because there's so much more to be done together."

However, the European Commission dogged publically commenting on the political upheaval in the UK.

Ukraine

In the past five months as Ukraine battles Russian aggression, UK's Boris Johnson had emerged as one of the most vocal and fervent supporters of Kyiv, even visiting the embattled nation and its top leadership in a show of support.

Paying homage to this support, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky talked to Johnson over a call, expressing his "sadness".

"We all welcome this news with sadness. Not only me, but also all of Ukrainian society which sympathises with you a lot."

Russia

Ukraine's aggressor welcomed the imminent change in leadership. Kremlin said it hopes for "more proffesional people" in Johnson's stead.

"We would like to hope that some day in Great Britain more professional people who can make decisions through dialogue will come to power," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, adding "But at the moment there is little hope for that."

Ireland

A neighbour with which the UK shares an open border sees Johnson's resignation as an "opportunity" to reset fraught relations.

Irish premier Micheal Martin pointed out that relations between the two countries have been strained and challenging in recent times, in part due to conflicts over special trade agreements after Brexit in British-run Northern Ireland.

In a statement, Martin referred to the 1998 peace agreement that put an end to decades of bloodshed over British rule in Northern Ireland but has come under increasing strain due to Brexit, saying, "We have now an opportunity to return to the true spirit of partnership and mutual respect that is needed to underpin the gains of the Good Friday Agreement."

From 'sadness' to hoping for 'more professional people', here's how the world reacted to Boris Johnson's exit

United States President Joe Biden said that he is looking forward to continuing “close cooperation” with the United Kingdom after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson decided to step down from his position. While the official statement from the White House had no mention of Johnson, Biden said that he hopes that the “special relationship” between the people of America and Britain “remains strong and enduring” and they need to work together on issues like the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

“When the dust settles in London, Johnson’s resignation will do better than harm to the US-UK relationship,” said Charles Kupchan, who served as President Barack Obama’s Europe adviser in the White House according to The Guardian.

“That’s mainly because Washington needs a very steady hand on the steering wheel and Johnson has lurched from one crisis to the next. He hasn’t been able to provide the kind of continuity and the political strings that the US and the world desperately need right now.”

The relationship between Biden and Johnson has not been a smooth one. Biden once called Johnson a “physical and emotional clone” of Donald Trump, the then president and was not convinced by the prospect of Brexit and the resultant threat on the Good Friday agreement in Northern Ireland.

However, there was a unity in the approach taken by both nations when it comes to the Ukraine conflict, and both were heavy in their criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both UK and US supplied a huge number of weapons to Ukraine and the coming days will be crucial in understand what lies ahead for the alliance.

Joe Biden says US-UK relations to remain strong after Boris Johnson resignation

Even as the Russian aggression on Ukraine, which has resulted in hundreds of deaths, millions of displaced people, and ruined cities and houses continues after five months, Moscow's former president commented that sanctions, and attempts made by the West to punish a nuclear power like Russia, could endanger humanity. Taking to Telegram, on Wednesday, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, said "The idea of punishing a country that has one of the largest nuclear potentials is absurd. And potentially poses a threat to the existence of humanity."

The February 24th invasion of Ukraine has triggered some serious sanctions against Russia. The event has also led to the souring of relations between Moscow and the West. Joe Biden vows to keep fighting 'epidemic' of gun violence after Highland Park shooting

U.S. WNBA basketball star Brittney Griner has made a direct plea to President Joe Biden to stand up for her in an emotional letter sent to the White House on Monday as she remains detained in Russia on drug charges.

Griner, who was held at a Moscow airport on Feb. 17 when a search of her luggage allegedly revealed multiple cannabis oil vape cartridges, went on trial on Friday and could face up to 10 years in a Russian jail. The case takes place against a backdrop of high tension between Moscow and Washington over the conflict in Ukraine. U.S. officials say Griner has been detained wrongfully.

"As I sit here in a Russian prison, alone with my thoughts and without the protection of my wife, family, friends, Olympic jersey, or any accomplishments, I`m terrified I might be here forever," she wrote in a letter, excerpts of which have been shared by her representatives. "On the 4th of July, our family normally honors the service of those who fought for our freedom, including my father who is a Vietnam War Veteran.
"It hurts thinking about how I usually celebrate this day because freedom means something completely different to me this year."

"I voted for the first time in 2020 and I voted for you. I believe in you. I still have so much good to do with my freedom that you can help restore. "I miss my wife! I miss my family! I miss my teammates! It kills me to know they are suffering so much right now. I am grateful for whatever you can do at this moment to get me home."

World third-richest person Jeff Bezos slammed United States President Joe Biden for calling on companies running gasoline stations to lower their prices. Bezos' latest remarks have, in a way, renewed his spat with the White House. Taking to his official Twitter handle, the Amazon founder wrote: "Ouch. Inflation is far too important a problem for the White House to keep making statements like this." "It’s either straight ahead misdirection or a deep misunderstanding of basic market dynamics," he added. Ouch. Inflation is far too important a problem for the White House to keep making statements like this. It’s either straight ahead misdirection or a deep misunderstanding of basic market dynamics. https://t.co/XgKfEICZpk — Jeff Bezos (@JeffBezos) July 3, 2022 × What did Biden say? On Saturday, Biden tweeted: "My message to the companies running gas stations and setting prices at the pump is simple: this is a time of war and global peril." Biden added, "Bring down the price you are charging at the pump to reflect the cost you're paying for the product. And do it now." In response to Bezos' comments, the White House came to the US leader's defence on Sunday. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Twitter that oil prices have dropped about $15 a barrel over the past month. "But prices at the pump have barely come down. That's not 'basic market dynamics.' It's a market that is failing the American consumer," she wrote. White House spokesman on national security issues, John Kirby, also defended the president. In an appearance on Fox News, he said, "The president is working very, very hard across many fronts... to try to bring that price down. Citing Biden's proposal to suspend the federal gas tax this summer and his decision to tap the US strategic oil reserves to put more product on the market, Kirby said, "He knows that it is not going to solve all the problems, but it will help if everybody cooperates on this. We could bring the price down at least by about one dollar a gallon. Gasoline prices in US Gasoline prices have been above $5 a gallon since early June. Notably, the prices have fallen slightly since, but remain far from the $3 a gallon level of a year ago. Biden has regularly attacked oil companies for the high prices as he says that these companies care only about profits. On the other hand, the companies say in turn they have increased production in order to reduce prices. But they also say that the prices are set on the world market.
